    Technically, it's a self-launching sailplane. For all the naysayers, there is nothing in the world like soaring. Catch a thermal at 800' AGL and ride it to 14,000 feet, then glide at 120 kts at 40:1 until you find the next one. Or run a ridge in Tennessee and fly 200 ft off the trees for 20 miles. I used to fly a Nimbus (unlimited class) in Florida and once had to dead stick from 5000 ft. 35 miles to my home airport. I got there with 900 ft altitude. Almost nothing in life is more exhilarating than soaring.

      Over here in Germany, where it was invented (by Lilienthal, if one wants, before the Wrights) and where it grew to a grass roots sport between the wars on the Wasserkuppe (we simply weren't allowed to build powered aircrafts), we have a huge club scene, which makes it affordable to everyone, even kids. Almost every city has its own gliding club and most of the gliders in the world are still developed and built here, despite high labour expenses.
      I loved the sport, but Germans are Germans and they are bureaucrats and nitpickers. Clublife also isn't easy, because there are always one or two oldies in every club, who ruin everybodies' day. This makes the greatest experience of freedom (gliding) to a hell of a prison on the ground, because there is not just the Luftamt but a lot of paperwork and also the club work. Therefor I gave up.
      But noone, who does not share the experience of fighting with a thermal and hearing the vario twitter, might understand the magic and fascination. There is no Lycoming and propeller noise and even the raptors have accepted us as their buddies, flying close to us. Over here they show thermals to us and vice versa. They have adapted, because there are so many gliders over here.
      To this day I repent having quit.

    I was a member of ASC back when I was in High School in the late '70's. The Late Great Al Santilli was one of my instructors. My whole family was soaring for a couple of years, 2-33, Twin Grob, 1-26 & 1-34, almost completed my Silver C, landed out on my cross country attempt then summer was over and I was off to college... I too remember the thrill of flying into 1000+ lift at pattern entry altitude and thermaling up to 14,000' cloud base... I really loved the squeal of the audio varios...

      Very cool! Al Santilli was my examiner for my glider rating, he showed me his sign off by one of the Wright brothers :)

    I've flown into that airport. I bought a 182 in Phoenix. After I dropped off a friend in Albuquerque, I headed east. The weather got bad at Cline's Corner and I started picking up ice. I went back to Moriarty and waited. Later that day, I took another shot but again started picking up ice. Back to Moriarty. The next day the weather was better and I headed out on my way.

    1970 the first Glider with Jet , came to Chile, where we fly from Santiago to Arica, in search of a Glinding Path in Los Andes, Glider Caproni developed class A-21 sailplane, which featured a relatively large side-by-side cockpit, and also a self-launch model, the A-21J, with a small jet engine for launch and cruise.s,

    One time on my birthday I went out to Lake Pleasant with a friend of mine. I was recovering from a gnarly pre-birthday hangover. We decided to go for glider rides as a spur of the moment fun thing to do. It was really fun until he started doing the spins and the loops and the high G turns. We landed and I had never puked so hard in my life. It took me hours to feel normal just so I could drive home. So word of advice, don't get in a glider with a bad hangover......

    Because this plane is a turbojet powered wouldnt you technically need a type raiting to fly it?

      This glider is experimental, so doesn't have a type certificate. Therefore a type rating isn't possible. The FAA did require an 'authorization in lieu of type rating'. However, after years of fighting the FAA, they relented and now most turbine powered motorgliders no longer need any special authorization. Also, pending regulations will allow turbine engines in light sport aircraft.

    A small jet engine makes a lot of sense for a motorglider, where weight and engine volume are at a premium and the relative inefficiency of a jet engine is much less important than a simple lightweight and low volume engine to loft a glider into the air. It'd be great if a jet engine could be integrated into the glider's tail with the intake in the nose, so it doesn't create drag. It'd also be great to have the ability to use the jet later in flight if needed.

      But the drag is only at "take off", so while gliding - no extra drag.

    Would it be some benefit of saving starting fuel to have a ground tow truck (with good brakes for the end of the runway), to start the jet glider, like a sling shot, getting it airborne to say 100 mph, saving some initial fuel burn.

      @@trueairspeed130 I had a client that took me up in an S10, what a great plane to fly, very intuitive for a complete and utter newbie on the controls for 10min 2nd ever time with hands on controls of a plane. He had done a cost country flight in less time and fuel cost than a small car.

      typically don't land with engines on. They are typically retracted by then, and you land as a normal glider.

    We all wondered about the intriguing twin-jet glider design on the vid cover graphic only to find that only more conventional designs were included. All interesting footage here; but you need to have the cover graphic somewhat match the content even though the current one mey be more compelling in nature. Back to another edit. Thats sort of the way this all works. 😊

    That. Is an Asw 27 which has been flying in the US for years. Those better informed will know that Jonker Sailplanes have jets for many years.

      Nope, not the jet ASW-27 with that fuselage and canopy. That is a DG, I think a DG-800 (N number is 800UM...).

      The jets are not "engines" for a glider, they are an optional launch assistance appliance, they could just as well aerotow or auto/winch launch to get into the air...

    Trainer is Great Lakes 2T? It was only a matter of time for jets to catch up with gliders. Wonder if they leave any fuel in reserve before landing just in case.

    Gliders? How quaint; I believe the rest of the world calls them sailplanes. Gliders are WWII death traps that can only go from high altitude to low, while sailplanes can go from a low altitude to incredibly high altitudes.

      Sailplane, how quaint. I've flown around a dozen different types and have owned two (Mosquito and Ventus). None have had sails. On the other hand, my pilot's license says "Glider".

      "Soaring" is a much more encompasing description than "gliding". The term "glider" is perceived by the public with an image of a paper airplane in their minds. Throw it into the air and as it glides, down it comes. People have no idea that these aircraft can stay aloft for hours and travel hundreds of miles. The term "sailplane" is much more appropriate in my opinion. Like a sailboat that takes advantage of the winds to allow hours of fun on the lake without a motor, a sailplane soars on atmospheric currents to allow hours of fun in the sky without a motor.

      The problem with batteries is they are too heavy. You would have to design an entire new sailplane from scratch to keep the batteries at the correct CG. To go faster, sailplanes carry water in bladders in the leading edge of the wings, but dump it before landing.. If you put the batteries in the wings, It would take 4 people to put the wings on, and the landing speeds would be excessive.

      Flying a Calif is really an expierience ! Doesn´t feels like a glider with the big Helicopter stick, and bumpy thermals ? Not existing in this one, too heavy ! Landing configuration set, nose down in an breathtaking angel with stable 100Km/h , save and smooth landing on the double wheels, and than look in the face of your passenger! Hilarius !!! I am still smiling ...

    Gliders with aux jets to launch with are nothing new. Uncommon, it's more common to use a piston engine, but not RARE.

    In my country, well actually basically on my home airport, we had better one :D PBS (a company based near my home airport) made new small jet engine (TJ100) and they needed to test it, so they modified glider L-13 Blanik to acomodate this engine, hard mounted to the fuselage, and this plane became known as L-13TJ and it was a beast :D that engine is powerfull and it gives the plane about 1:3 TWR in normal operating weights and it goes. Take-off in about 100 meters, and it can basicalli go straight up like on the winch launch :D there is a video :D ua-cam.com/video/CsENCX6HKPI/v-deo.html

    why no one does a 1 to 1 power to weight on a glider? it is law limitations or what? its not that dificult to do that, just expensive... 500kg glider, 70kg pilot, 150kg engine, 200kg glider, and 80kg fuel... 20 min of pure fun hhaahaha i dont know the size of a engine to have 5.000kn, but even 2 for 1 in power to weight would be insane in a glider... this glider on the video maybe have 400kg and 50kg of thrust and can go 200kmh
