Moral of story: stop signing contracts thinking ppl have your best interest at heart, they don't. They're all for self!
It’s crazy that decades later artist are still getting finessed in these contracts. Glorilla, for a recent example, didn’t make a dime off her breakout hit and clearly didn’t read her contract going into it.
@@anthonyt425 bruh she didn’t take at least a second when looking at be contract just saw the money and chain then signed smh

More like learn how to read and use your brain instead of following your heart. I can guess how many childhood dreams were crushed when they found out how little they were getting after their first hit/album.
So literally all jobs or contract work? It's always at the interest of the employer
When Chili said that on the biggest stage, the Grammys, after they had just won that night, it's truly one of the most saddening and eye-opening moments in music history. Record labels are vultures who look to capitalize on any artist at any time, especially ones who probably aren't as knowledgeable about the music industry as others.
Arnt most people at the top like this? It's safe to assume that since this industry has been ran the same bogus way for years.
Yep and ya gotta remember artist still ain’t making that much of Spotify till this day. Music business is really rough
The thing is they were not signed to a record label, but a production company called Pebbletone.
There whole business plan is to sign artist to bad deals so the can take as much money as possible before it stops. If labels stopped bleeding artist dry they probably wouldn't be nowhere near as big and powerful and they know that
@@CleanMusicLover229 they were definitely signed to a label. Laface & Arista which is a subsidiarity of Sony music entertainment. Pebbitone was the management company. So, their money was split between 3 labels & the percentage from the management company before they saw a dime. Horrible contract, horrible percentages.
For perspective, Destiny’s Child still hasn’t sold as many records as TLC. The only girl group in history to sell more than TLC is the Spice Girls.
Yeah but DC are still getting money from their songs while TLC are still broke
Worldwide, TLC sold 55 million while Destiny's Child sold over 60 million. The Spice Girls are at 75 million.
@@KRSonbe the point still remains, they were massive and had no business ever going broke
Thought it was En Vogue.
What about Blackpink?
Black pig in your area
The fact that they used the same lawyer that represented the Label tells you everything you need to know
and they probably thought they were given a favor...
The blame game stops at the girls. They obviously didnt read the contract or they did and were too dumb to realise and signed anyway.
@@philxdev They were dumb for signing that contract lolz
That's pretty ignorant on their behalf... Jeez, did they not use their minds?
@@desd1932I mean they all were 19-20 and this was they first exposure to dealing with that type of money
Thanks for covering this! A LOT of people still don’t know about this situation and will sign these crazy, exploitative deals. Get your own lawyer, do NOT use the lawyer the record company recommends you (they’re working for them), and read over those papers thoroughly. I know most of these rappers come from nothing and take ANYTHING thrown at them when they finally start getting recognition, but like they say: Everything that glitters, ain’t gold. Rest easy, Left-Eye. 😢
WELL SAID! about the bag at the end of the day thats how most jobs are! work work work and no pay!
This is the case with any sales job where you need to hit forecasts a lot of commission workers these days make less than drive thru employees because they don’t hit sales goals which is in the contract they signed to.

I think TLC was one of the most talented and gifted groups of the time. They deserved better than how they were treated.
One thing I adore about TLC was they were able to be open about being broke. A lot of ppl stunt so much as if they're big, but they're not. TLC kept it HELLA Real and was still able to say this. This is why so many artists nowadays are independent. The labels been rapping the industry and running talented artists lives for too long.
There isnt that many independent artists. And some people dont wanna put in the hard work.
@@desd1932 Some people who work hard for their stuff get it taken from them and that is what happened to TLC.
This is why websites like Soundcloud and Bandcamp blew up in the 2000s. It basically cut out the record companies who were the middlemen.
I think for any struggling musical artist, their best bet is to go that route unless they have a lawyer in their best interest
Any lawyer you are paying should be in your best interest it is their legal duty
Soundcloud was never monetized though They didn't pay anyone to have their music there.
The best bet is to put a song on soundcloud and once it blows up put the audio on UA-cam for monetisation. Or just do both at the same times
it also killed quality control :D

This is the reason I created a platform, imagine giving an independent artist a voice, a place where they can sell their albums and keep 90% of the profit. Giving an artist a way of helping other artists. This is for everyone who loves being a creator and loves having that creative spirit in them. This is why I built my own platform, this might sound inspiring but the only thing that's more inspiring than this is to see how hard a person works, and through their hardship never gives up. I really hope that 2023 will be the biggest change in everyone's lives.
You really cant trust any contracts without A. Reading it yourself (and ensuring you understand what has been written) or B. Bringing your own lawyer to highlight the traps setup
So why are singers like Rihanna, Beyonce, Mariah Carey etc not broke then? Im confused
@@eduardogavilanes4651 IN short, GOOD management. I am 99% sure that all 3 of those women had a couple bad contracts and left some money on the table in their career. Not to mention, A LOT (not all) of Rihanna's net worth is arguably more due to her line of cosmetics and not music, she hasn't came out w/ an album in years. Also, when Beyonce and Jay Z STARTED dating, she started her own management company, Parkwood Ent. & a joint venture w/ Jay Z's Roc Nation. There is no doubt Jay Z had his team looking over Beyonce's contracts and her numbers (she's also an actress w/ her own line of products), HE wasn't gonna let his girl lose any money so I'm sure she was taken care of. Mariah, I don't think she hit a threshold of A LOT of money to have people fighting over her earning, no disrespect, she was good, not great and she was more an icon outside music.
@@eduardogavilanes4651ALSO, all 3 of those women were cemented in music before streaming, playlists, and Spotify were a thing. So they only got more rich as the industries all evolved, that's for certain. Watch the Netflix series "The Playlist" which is a fictional but accurate representation of the inception of music streaming and how Spotify started. Not a true story, but illustrates the evolution of steaming, music apps, playlists, etc.

Seriously. How dumb do you have to be to not read a contract? Like go buy a car amd just sign without looking at the price and rates. They have nobody to blame but themselves.
I took TLC granted during my youth, i didn't appricate them enough. Because now well into my adulthood, i have a whole new appreciation for them.
Eh, I though their music was corny, like alot of that 2000s big baggy clothes era music.

Record deals full of vague promises like that are common. A lot of artists end up barely making a profit and in debt to record companies.
That’s why you stay independent and do distribution deals
but then how do explain eminem. dres. snoop. beyonces...?? i think some of these rec companies treat their clients better then others. but ya they should always read over their contracts. n not get caught up in the hype of finally being signed by some major label.
@ᔕᑭꏂΛՐ They sold their own souls, having to let close friends or family members get sacrificed for their wealth.
Their lives don't belong to them, it belongs to the whichever powers are holding them to their contracts.
You can have a successful band and tour the world and still be broke. This is why a lot of singers and bands end up selling their entire song catalogs just to get enough money to live on for the rest of their lives. All that hard work recording and touring rarely leads to the life you think it would.
"The good days of the ripoffs" - Record Labels
Ahhh yes
Record labels are money hungry scum
only in it for the devils fuel
I thank you for sharing their story. TLC and many other groups were sabotaged by the record company and their manager, when they should be billionaires today. Aspiring musicians must be careful and if you can go independent so that you own the rights and royalties to your music.
TLC and their music is the bomb in the 90s but never knew they had all these problems...I hope they are fully recovered from it.
Even after seeing this, you're still going to get artists who sign to record labels without knowing what they're getting into
Yea, & then again, you have people who are fully aware, but they want the fame that bad, that they will sign whatever to be famous.
@@hsojettedrub3821 if they're doing it purely to get famous, signing a deal is the way to go but you sacrifice financial stability. I just have a problem with talented artists signing a deal thinking labels have their best interest at heart

One of the most talented bands of the 90s. This is so tragic.
If all time
This is why I support independent artists! They get no help. They know it's live or die. They put so much more effort into their music. Ryan Upchurch, for example. He put a few now top country singers on. Then the dummies went off and signed with record labels. I'm proud of independent artists. Those are the artists we should be supporting.
Now I see why khia shamone making all her money she very independent
I don't blame you. But for my ears, there is nothing like group signing. People can actually sound good when they harmonize together when everyone hits the right notes. TLC was unique though in the sense that each girl got her own part in the songs, and each was unique in her own way.
TLC was the dopest in the 90's! Growing up as a kid in that era was amazing. The decade had its flaws no doubt, but the culture, music, television and style was epic! I wish I could go back for a visit so bad.
I’m so sad bc compared to Destiny’s Child or Spice Girls, those members are all wealthy and are able to live off the music they made in the 90s. TLC should be able too
Tboz and chilli both have millions now. This video is misleading. Tlc sued the label and then negotiated a contract and got a $20 million dollar deal and then released fanmail album with no scrubs. Went on tour and made millions, also just went on a big tour last year as well

Damn think about the time it is and the fact that those sells are actual CDs. The internet wasn’t accessible to everyone and bootleg CDs also costed money too. Record stores were in every single city and was a hangout spot even. That was when the record industry had it good. They probably knew that the internet would bring it to a end soon. The record labels were much more powerful and ruthless at that time. Going independent was not a thing. They’d take your money or kill you.
That’s what I’m thinking about these albums I STILL HAVE is damn I made my mom spend like $15 on each album myself and all they got out of it for them was 56cents 🤔

Every since the internet took off , record labels have been dying , this is a good thing
You don't think the labels control the internet? Look at the music that gets 100mill to 1B+ views. Even 10 mill+ is impossible because the algorithm controls who gets heard and who doesn't.

People trying to clown TLC, saying they were "scrubs the whole time."
"A Scrub is a guy who thinks he's fly but he's also known as a Busta, always talking 'bout what he wants but just sits on his broke ass"
They definitely never sat on their ass talking about what they want, they actually went out and hustled to make that money.
Record labels take advantage of the young and poor; who's gonna have the money for a lawyer when they are just getting started? The label will send their own lawyer who makes them think they're safe but is secretly playing them.
And even the biggest stars can't get fair record deals until they come up later in the industry. Ask Kanye, Lil Wayne, Taylor Swift, etc.

The best female group of all time ❤️
You can't deny the irony of "No Scrubs" being one of their greatest hits.
The music industry is nasty!!! It's so sad!!! Artists should come together to demand laws that could protect them as people, because when it comes to intellectual property rights companies got that covered and yet, most of the time, artists get zero money when those rights are infringed!!! Another nasty example of this industry is what Taylor Swift's manager did to her, when he disowned her from her own music just because he held the rights to her songs, that's just ridiculous!!! I understand that companies deal with the costs and bureaucracies so that artists won't have to worry about these things, and I also understand the risks involved especially for unknown artists, but once you got diamonds like TLC, Beyoncé, Taylor, etc... you need to make sure that the artist is being well treated... make sure that artist is being treated fairly!!! Because at the end of the day it should all be about FAIRNESS!!!!!

Yeah true that
Agriculture is the one profession that will never let you down.
The music industry is full of predators of all varieties. As soon as someone says "Don't worry about the details" that's when you need to worry even more. Using the same lawyer as the company is a dirty trick they use all the time to con people into accepting poor contracts. It should be a criminal offense in my opinion.
Clear conflict of interest, don't know why even bands starting out can't see this for themselves. Always seek independant legal advice. It's like going to HR in a Company with an issue and expecting them to be on your side. They aren't they primarily exist to cover so called 'Managements' arses
Fanmail was a much needed era seeing as they weren't compensated for their hard work on crazy sexy cool
The way that the music industry is set up is crazy. Imagine if you were an actor, and you were gonna be in a movie, and the company that's going to be profiting off the movie said "okay, were gonna loan you the money to make the movie and to live, but you have to pay us back before you see any money." Wed think it would be crazy, but somehow in the music industry, it's totally normal for the artist to pay for literally everything out of their pocket and then only make a tiny percentage of the money made off of THEIR creation. The music industry is a predatory industry, that thrives ONLY because they are artificial gatekeepers to other industries like radio and television.
