This is a great example of why Clapton has had such a long career... he knows that a good song is like a perfect Christmas tree... no matter how you dress it up everybody sees how great the song is and loves to gather around it that's what gives everybody the warmth and strength of the spirit of the music...without the song there's nothing to celebrate
The piano player is none other than the legendary Johnnie Johnson. He co-wrote with Chuck Berry on all of his hits in the early days of R&R. One of the greatest blues piano players ever!
What a lot of people don’t get is that being “the complete package” is what sets EC apart. The instrument AND the voice. It’s rare. Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, BB King, and Peter Green come to mind. I’ve missed some I’m sure, but the list is not a long one. I prefer this period of EC to 1960’s EC because he was at the top of his game with BOTH the instrument AND his voice. Awesome talent!
When the video started,I thought one musician looked like Robert Cray.Once the third guitarist broke into his lead,I recognized Buddy Guy,and hid signature style.
It makes a long time that Mr. Clapton has the key of the highway : the Highway of the Stars... Thanks for this performance and your kindness. We love you....
By EC's own account, it's a miracle he never kicked it 50years ago, but he played just as great even when he couldn't even stand up from drugs and alcohol, Patty Boyd was amazed over this fact (Just take a listen to Layla and other assorted lovesongs)
These were to me Clapton's,throw out a feeler for the at that time long awaited Blues tour..he did some shows with old blues masters...and honesty they were flat the chemistry wasnt right...he knew it and got it right...the blues album was a grand slam, the touring for 2 years was so utterly sensational I forgot the lacodaisic drunken 70's and early 80's..my hero decided to be a stellar blues guitarist again...many of the shows are on sugarmegs streaming
Fuck me I was there for that night, my first ever gig aged 12 and it blew my fucking mind! It was incredibly loud fwiw. Buddy Guy stole the show but Eric was pure class, his tone was majestic.
Super audio. Just heard Ben Howard at Royal Albert Hall and audio was awful. Where to begin with Clapton....I feel like like I've known him for 50 yrs. THE very best guitar player ever. He seems like the blues are attached to him like an arm or leg. He is the blues man. What an excellent concert!! And everyone playing in that band with him are excellent musicians as well. Thanks so much Eric for making this old woman happy today!❤ ❤👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
My uncle first played Eric Clapton to me when I was 18, he was teaching me guitar and his one wish, was one day he would open up the AA meeting hall and before anyone dropped in, Eric would walk in and say G'day, and they would jam. I;ll never forget that or him. Thankyou heaps Eric, for a life time of beautiful music and memories.
I was 19 when I first saw this version on TV in 1990 in my bedroom late at night (Channel 4 show called Rock Steady here in the UK) and it BLEW MY MIND. I'd never seen anything like it. They had quite a few songs from this show, some of which ended up on the 24 Nights release.
@@genethomas2000 That's ace! I actually did have my original VHS too until about six months ago when I skipped all of them (due to house move, not wanting to move clutter). Knowing I could get the footage anyway, one way or another 😃
In October 1990 it was moved over to the black body (which you see in the 1991 RAH footage). Many years ago I had some communication with Mike Stevens who made that neck. Really nice man.
According to Buddy Guy, this series of shows restarted his career, as someone at RAH from a record company approached him and asked him to record an album.

Great that buddy is featured in this in full... But I will never understand how the camera person didn't know how to spot the guy playing the solo. They got this all wrong on the original dvd too! Still such a treat to be able to experience the wider world of 24 nights after all these years. Gold.
I believe the line up for the 3 nights of blues in 1990 were Clapton,, Johnnie Johnson on keyboards, Richard Cousins on bass, and Jamie Oldaker on drums, plus special guests Buddy Guy and Robert Cray. Clapton's original plan was to release the original CD set based on 5 live recordings in Jan-Feb 1990. However Clapton was not happy with some of the performance and delayed release until after more performances in Feb - March 1991. This formed the original 15 song recording that was released. The 2023 set called "The Definitive 24 Nights. " looks like 3 CDs - 1 CD for rock, blues, and orchestral each.

I absolutely love this video. Three amazing guitarists accompanied by other superb musicians just jammed those nights out and unknowingly, produced these great performances. Salute!
My first concert i ever went too. I shot the sheriff loved that song. ♥️ Eric Clapton will forever be one of my favorites 💗💗💗 Love this video also Thanks for sharing ❤

Well said Brian. Spot on.
@BunyanaRed1958 thanks!
He plays little bits of a lot of other now-gone players in this tune...homage to the older timers.
't get.
❤swesome
RIP Jim. He could play. He's at peace now.
😢

very nice ! to see buddy and eric and robert cray is just heaven !
Eric plays only with the best. Number of legends that played with him over the years is just staggering.
@@IMajst3RIi guess he must have the récord of great jams and colaborations...and it will never be broken
Thank you, I couldn't remember his name. Had the last name but wrong first. I was thinking Lonnie, which is another musician.

That guitar, that sound, that vibe, that voice, just Eric.....
This was great. 3 tremendous blues players, EC, Robert Cray, and Buddy Guy. Been enjoying Claptons riffs for more than 50 years.
It was that good !
me too. since 1972

EC yesterday, today, and forever!
When Eric plays, the Angels gather around and take Note. The people gather around in Awe. The LORD closes his eyes in that's My Boy... 🙏
It makes a long time that Mr. Clapton has the key of the highway : the Highway of the Stars...
Thanks for this performance and your kindness.
We love you....
How can you not love the Blues......?
Clapton is the king of Blues.
A true gentleman, who opened space on his stage for others. Generosity not always meets gratitude, that too.
Thank you,Mister Clapton!😎
His playing is so commanding it's scary
They love the blues so much that you can see it in their playing. Strong and effective like always!
Thank you, heroes!💙
I was there on one of the bluesnights. Such a wonderful experience!
The remastering on this is brilliant. For me, this is from Eric's best years. Drink and drug free and playing superbly.

I’ve been with you Eric Clapton since 1972

Watching this on a Sunday evening, smoking a joint. 67 still loving Clapton. Awesome!!!!!!!
Barely 17 at the time and still a student... but had I been a Londoner God knows I would have found the way not to miss a single show!!
Ditto. It was my first gig attendance. Eric at the Albert Hall.
There's just something about the way Eric plays. Amazing!
Eric Clapton and Jamie Oldaker, both great!
Fabulous Presentation 👏👏
This song with B.B. King is one of my favourites!!! Not to take away from this performance by any means!
Love watching that finger work. Pure majic. Watch a pleasure to watch.
Eric needs to do a blues and R & R album with his legend friend Keith Richards. This song would be smoking with them two.
Its also so Wonderful to see the exquisite musicians that back Mr. Clapton, such as the Incomparable Mr. Robert Cray !!
And Albert Collins...
@@glauroo.junior83 Most Assuredly! Well Said, Friend!! Thank You...

I got the key to the highway
Billed out and bound to go
Gonna leave here running
Walking is much too slow
I'm going back to the border
Baby, where I'm better known
Because you haven't done nothing, baby
But drove a good man from home
When the moon peeks over the mountains
Lil girl, I'll be on my way
I'm gonna roam this highway
Until the break of day
So give me one more kiss, darling
Just before I go
'Cause when I leave this time, little girl
I won't be back no more, no more
I got the key (I got the key) to the highway (to the highway)
Billed out and bound to go (I gotta go, I gotta go)
I'm gonna leave here running (mhm)
Walking is much too slow
