    As a Type 1 diabetic who had WLS 19 years ago who follows a keto diet I can say that I'm amazed at how much better my blood sugars are and how angry I am for my endo's for never suggesting it. After 37 years I feel very lucky to have few complications from eating the standard American diet and just blousing for it. I appreciate your videos so much and just want to say thank you!

    Thanks Doc…had a vasectomy when I was in my 30’s and shortly afterwards became Type 1. Really good life saving information!

    Found you today and am so grateful. I’m definitely type 1 on insulin pump since 1992. Haven’t had endocrinologist since 1998. I’d have to drive to San Francisco which is about 6 hr drive so my FP doc cares for me. I’m a retired ICU RN. So glad to meet you. I will marathon you videos over next several days.

    OMG you are the best! You explain things so clearly to help all the Type 1 and 2 diabetics. To bad you can't teach all the endocrinologists to get on board and help their patients! I only wish you lived here in California!!! But I enjoy learning and implementing everything you are teaching me. I totally admire you and your teaching! All the best. . . . .

    I am a Type 1 on near-zero to zero carbohydrates in my diet. I found that I had to TRIPLE my basal rates of insulin to compensate for the increase in blood sugar levels... on nearly zero carbohydrates. I attributed this to gluconeogenesis but with the near elimination of insulin boluses for dietary consumption of carbohydrates, I have decreased my total daily insulin consumption by nearly 50% compared to when I was on the super effective American Diabetes Association's "Diabetic Plate Plan". Unfortunately my A1C is still high so I need to continue to raise my basal rate to reduce my mild hyperglycemia but my endocrinologist is obviously frightened by my large basal rates. He is deathly afraid of me having severe hypoglycemic events but my average monthly hypo events is 0; he just doesn't understand a zero carb diet for his T1D's. The hardest part of a Type 1 going low/zero carb is defending your health decisions in your doctor's office.

      @@miraposa99 I spoke to a geneticist friend who did a study on blood sugar in his masters program. He suggested I see what removing all artificial sweeteners from my diet does to my blood sugar. I admittedly have been consuming too much artificial sweeteners in drinks. I'm hoping this is what does the trick.

      @@johncharles236 I've heard that certain artificial sweeteners will do that. I don't use any except for monk fruit, I think there's a connection to adrenaline and cortisol. If the body thinks it's stressed, it will make more endogenous glucose.

    Developed T1D in my 50's. Have done strict Keto for several months and have seen my blood sugars elevate when I started using a lot less insulin. Did discover that had to take insulin just to keep the muscles working and stop from having a ketoacidosis event. The Endo was appalled I wasn't eating the prescribed diet and has written me off. Still overweight despite fighting this battle for several years. Actually, the biggest issue I face is keeping BS levels down during competitive tennis matches. Even when I'm super clean (zero carb) for days before, they inevitably go up. Some days are better than others. The other side is the BS drops after night matches. Going to go more Carnivore-ish to see if that will help me mitigate. Not planning on living forever but doing the few things I enjoy make dealing with the health issues I caused myself a little easier. If you have any insight on stopping spikes due to adrenalin and cortisol from being competitive, I'm all ears. (I did start breathing exercises pre and during that has helped and added Creatine to my daily regime which also has helped in general energy level during matches) I learned most of what your video spoke to through trial and error as my Endo offered nothing but pharmaceuticals which I rejected.

    Hi doctor, it will be better if you tell us about diet for T1D kids. How to avoid carbs, how to calculate amount of fat and protein, for becoming insulin sensitive, totally I agree with you, because my 4 year old son has been diagnosed T1D. And it's very difficult to keep his BG strongly in TIR. He has usually low BG early in the morning nearly 90-100, but once he woke up BG goes down slowly. And after breakfast he has, BG rises above 200. It happens slowly after consuming requires amount of carbs or rises after 2 hour later. What kids could actually consume for BG spikes avoiding?

    T1D for 18 years here.
    I am about 100lbs overweight after two pregnancies and started keto a few months ago. I've lost 20lbs but am now losing very slowly, I think because of the amount of insulin I need every day.
    I only eat 20-25 carbs a day but still take almost 100 units a day, I'm guessing because of the glucose my liver produces all day.
    I have a dexcom and do intermittent fasting until at least noon-2pm. But I find that even if I don't eat anything at all until 2pm my blood sugar spikes to 250+
    My insulin resistance has gotten extremely bad over the years. My carb ratio is 1 unit of insulin for ever 2g of carb.
    It used to be 1:8-10g.
    I've found that even on keto my sensitivity is not getting better and its going to be harder for me to lose weight(I'm only losing maybe 5lbs a month now)
    I'm just discouraged from all the 100lb in 1 year weight losses I see and the fact that I don't know if my insulin resistance will ever get better.
    Please tell me im wrong, I'm so discouraged and anxious about the future... 😭😭😭

      Melissa Burazin I’m not giving medical advice. Curious, have you tried moving your meals to breakfast and lunch? It is common that people are less sensitive to insulin in the evening. Also Dr Jason Fung recommends alternative daily fasting to cure insulin resistance. Is that something you’ve considered?

      @@mcoverview I've never heard the "less insulin sensitive in the evening" thing, but I'm definitely willing to try it!
      I've been intermittent fasting for about a month now, trying to get more fat adapted to make fasting easier before I try alternate day...otherwise I know ill fail. I've done 24 hour fasts a couple times and they were very tough, especially if my bloodsugar drops and I HAVE to eat so I don't die lol.
      But yes I do know the benefits of that and plan on trying it soon.

      Melissa Burazin Because of your insulin requirements, you’ll need to work with your medical team. As you become more insulin sensitive, you’ll need less insulin. Have you asked your doctor about timing of insulin doses? Dr Cywes has a video where he talks about dosing after eating and testing to see how high the BG is, not based on before eating and how much one is going to eat. Might be worthwhile to discuss with your medical team. Good luck!

      Maybe try carnivore for a period of time combined with fasting? Or without.. I lost 60lbs in 6 months, healed so many things in my body. I had had 4 kids so my hormones were all messed up, lack of vitamin D! My weight was very stubborn no matter how much I exercised or limited myself it wasn't until that. That it fell off! : )!

      Mel B I know this post is well over a year old and you may not see this but...I manage my Type I (of 35 years) husband's diet and work out his insulin requirements. If he were taking 100 units of insulin a day there is no way he would be eating any carbs and his protein would be no more than moderate. Please do not keep doing things the same way and expect different results. You did not get this way overnight and you will not get out of it overnight. If you can maintain 5 lbs a month loss...in 12 months you will be down another 60 lbs...+ the original 20 will be 80 lbs. Not too shabby. I hope you haven't bought in on the myth that you can eat as much protein and fat as you want. That simply is not true. And...walking 20 minutes after your 2 (I assume) meals a day will help that insulin resistance a lot. Find a good Type II or Insulin Resistance Group and get all the info you can. Good Luck

    Keto 8 months T1D here. Its awesome. Doing everything you said except 0 carb, im at 30 a day. Wondering, how do you get your nutrients on 0 carb??

      your question suggests that you can't receive/obtain/absorb some nutrients without carbs... am I right having this impression? 🤔
      if yes, why do you think one would need carbs? what nutrients might be lost/not delivered by not consuming/avoiding carbs? 🤔

    Went to my endo last week for the first time since I started no carbs. She is warning me sbout DKA. How do I do this and avoid that? My a2c went down to 6.1 and i have kost 40 pounds so far. Ive never felt better but now Im scared sbout what they're telling me which is that DKA is inevitablenas a tupe 1.

    I am mom of T1 boy. I am trying to feed him low carb since he was 3y old. He's now a teenager and I wish I knew how to teach him to be more responsible for his health. He has no discipline. I eat keto for 8 year now because of him to understand better whats happening with body. But after all years he would still eat carbs if he could :(

    Great video! I’m T1 38 yrs. Keto for over 3. Still feel like I’m struggling at times. Protein will raise my bs. What tops foods do you suggest for zero carb, mod protein, and high fat?

      TheSunnyEdge no. I currently eat less than 20 a day (for the most part). Carbs from low carb veg, nuts, and avocado mainly. Some dark chocolate and occasionally keto treats.

      Leslie Dennehy I just watched a debate on “The Doctors” tv show about that a few days ago. It was interesting. The patients they interviewed bought grass fed beef from a farm. Coconut oil is high fat, zero carb. I personally like salmon, chicken. You’ll have to let me know how it goes!

    Hello, I had quick question as a diabetic.
    I was diagnosed as a diabetic when I was 18. It has been 7 year since I received the diagnosis, but for the past 3 years I have not taken a single dose of insulin... now am I still type 1 diabetic.
    Would love an explanation to this. At first they told me it was a honeymoon faze and now they have taken me off insulin for over 3 years.

      No its not type 1 , you had type 2 diabetes , having type 2 diabetes you can heal if you eat correctly. Type 1 our pancreas doesn't produce insulin at all even if we ate perfectly and on diets it doesn't go away at all . I've had type one diabetes for 28 years and I'm not obsessed and eat healthy but my pancreas doesn't produce any insulin at all. Only way to cure a type 1 is by replacing the pancreas.

    The issue of protein is so small as to be irrelevant for well controlled type1s. It is not essential for being well controlled. I am a well controlled type1 following the Bernstein protocol (mostly) using only multiple daily injections, a glucometer, a notepad and inexpensive insulin. My blood glucose averages 88 mg/dl (4.9 mmol/L) and my A1c is consistently under 5.0% (30 mmol/mol). My Standard Deviation (SD) for blood glucose stays well under 20. Would I like a CGM? You betcha! But they are not the magic bullet. The reading lags 20 minutes behind a finger poke and, as a practical matter, their accuracy and consistency can vary a lot.
    Protein should be a factor of ideal body weight, not a percentage of calories or a ratio to fat. It will vary with individual condition. Few type1s are "pure", most have multiple complications, some of those like malabsorbtion, IBS, EPI, and celiac. I have to fight to *not* waste away. I would rather have generous protein as I can competently deal with any excess with a very small bolus than to not have enough. I am not as adverse to fat as Dr. Bernstein is but fat is the result of the calculation, not an input to it. Carbs (fixed very low) +plus+ Protein (fixed by body weight) =equals= fat needed for satiety and energy. Protein consumed should not have a relationship to fat or carbs consumed and it is better from my perspective to err on the high side while still getting generous fat. I can manage generous protein without sacrificing any meaningful blood glucose control.

    Type 1 since 1970. I cannot recommend an endocrinologist to any type 1 diabetic. They worship carbohydrates.

    Great info. My maternal grandfather was type 1 for most of his later years in life. He lived to 102. Not overweight. I'm not sure how long he injected but it had to be at least 30 years. Don't think or remember when he was initially diagnosed as a Type 1.
    On a side note I am a T2D at just over 60. Part time CGM user for finer management. Keto/Carnivore Also a member of a Facebook group.....Abbott Freestyle Libre Users. Yesterday someone posted their numbers which were a little high after eating a carb meal. Someone else responded suggesting a diabetic should treat carbs as poison. Oh boy did it start. So many negative comments with a few low carb supporters chiming in. Plenty of T1s responded they eat carbs with no problems. Someone finally posted a link to this Playlist which I am now watching fully. An Admin finally turned off commenting on that topic. So many low carb deniers in that group. It's crazy how backwards so many Diabetics still remain and refuse to listen to evidence based suggestions. A couple of low carb supporters even suggested turning off notifications because it was useless in that group to try and convince anyone.

    There's good carbs and bad carbs . You need good carbohydrates, did you know that we need greens In your body even non diabetics . Those are good carbs !
