@@SmeagolTheGreat Rammstein is unquestionably unique. They strike me as being relentlessly devoted to maximizing their audience’s entertainment experience. Their video productions are some of the most evocative I have ever seen. Considering their Berlin historicity, I am not surprised that they routinely utilize elements of the German Expressionist era as is readily apparent in many of their music videos.
I appreciate that they do not feel a need to resort to incessant displays of nauseating bombastic musical virtuosity. I also appreciate the fact that they have eschewed any attempt at producing music in English to satisfy mundane mainstream commercial (American) market appeal. I wish them much continued success.

    Hi!
Till's makeup is from the cabarets of the Berlin of the roaring 20's. If you know the movie "Cabaret" then you know where his makeup is coming from (especially in the scene with the song "Welcome").
The roaring 20's had the reputation to be especially kinky and decadent with a lot of orgies, crossdressers and homosexual activities. Especially in Berlin.
The rest is a mixture of Third Reich and GDR (DDR), because both dictatorships restricted the receiving of radio waves from foreign countries with foreign ideas and foreign music.
If you were caught listening to foreign (enemy) radio stations in the Third Reich this could be your end. In the DDR you were thrown in prison and / or your life was ruined by the secret service (Stasi).
In both states the radio was the life line of the people for listening to modern western music that was forbidden in both dictatorships.
Despite of those threats the most people in the GDR watched west-TV and listened to west-radio. There was an area in the east, where no western TV and radio waves were getting to. That area was called "Tal der Ahnungslosen" (valley of the clueless) by the east Germans.
The women protesting and going over the top with bare breasts and the women turning over the car were part of the women's rights movements. Then they had written on posters and their body in the 1960's & 1970's the slogan "My body belongs to me" (part of the pro abortion movement inside the womens rights movement of the 1960's and 70's).
In the video they had written on posters and bodies "My Radio belongs to me".
In the same women's rights direction goes the scene with the complaining man (about the food) and the woman throws him to the ground.
But to be honest: I don't know, why they brought up that women's rights stuff in the context with their song about the radio. Maybe the radio helped spreading those political ideas back then, too.
The music was in big parts a homage to the sound of the band "Kraftwerk" and their songs about radio waves and the radio itself (partly integrated into songs like "Autobahn").
    My recommendation:
The band "Kraftwerk" and their song "Autobahn". If possible, take one of the latest versions. If possible from one of their latest life events with the 3D animation of the German highway in the background.
    Greetings
    Mega 👋😇👋
    PS:
"fernes Weh" means literally translated "distant pain", right. But in this case it is an unusual, artistic version of the German word "Fernweh" (Wanderlust, travel nerves, travel bug, to have itchy feet).
All those English expressions and words for Fernweh (even the imported German word Wanderlust) aren't catching the real meaning of "Fernweh". It isn't just the wish to travel somewhere. It's like a sweet (at the same time wistful) yearning and thinking about distant places.

A good explanation about some details of the song I met on the channel "deutsch und deutschland", which is in Brazilian Portuguese. And the issue of women's representation would be linked to the demonstration against repression in general, but taking concrete cases and direct references, such as the repression against Russian women who demonstrated naked with the body written "my body belongs to me", where in the clip the phrase is "my radio belongs to me". The woman breastfeeding the radio would be a reference to the case of the broadcaster RIAS (I think it is better to just leave the reference and not try to explain the case). This is a bad reproduction of the fabulous video "Radio de Rammstein: Posso falar ou vão me prender?", which even without understanding the language, I suggest that it be seen to have the reference images of what I am talking about and make it easier to search.
And here is an opinion of mine: the scene where the woman rises beyond a reference to the demonstrations for freedom that existed in russia, would be a direct reference to the work La Liberté guidant le peuple, which would fit everything in one very clear sense and even explicit "freedom guiding the people".

You're clearly indoctrinated with propaganda from German liberals. The idea it would be ''your end'' in Nazi Germany if listening to foreign radio is plainly laughable. American music in particular was discouraged/blocked but people still played it without being ''ended''. It wasn't a random restriction of 'foreign ideas' that the Nazis were concerned with. In terms of music, it was specifically the American jazz/blues influenced music which contained a large black and ''chosen people'' component and for the time was also the most wild/hedonistic, the equivalent of current rap/hip-hop etc. in terms of moral influence on the population. This was before jazz was transformed into an elitist genre. So all the people now complaining about what's happening with music industry vice etc. and the influence on the youth aren't very far from the Nazi position in terms of cultural concerns.

Here in America, you rarely hear Rammstein, because they refused to 'play the game' all American musical acts do when it comes to paying third parties for air-time.
However, they totally sell out every concert tour! In fact, they hold the world's record for fastest sold-out tour, ever, at 37 minutes!! What's even more amazing is that Rammstein doesn't allow mass-ticket sales! Each ticket has the name of the person purchased it and they're a REAL person, not scalpers or resellers!

Exploring Rammstein will be a treat. I speak German a bit (pre-covid I travelled there about once a year or so for work), and find it useful to have the lyrics in both German and English up when I listen. Deutschland is a song that I find really lyrically powerful -- it does an amazing job conveying the "complicated" nature of German history and culture, and the mix of feelings many Germans have. For Radio, it is important to note that the members of the band all grew up in East Germany. The song conveys the importance radio had for so many Ossies --- "meine Ohren werden Augen" is a pretty autobiographical sentiment for them.

Rammstein is pure art, a modern kind of poetry. Simple metal riffs, deep and brutal lyrics. I have a deep bond to this band. Radio is part of their newest album. I can definitely recommend the song Deutschland, which reflects on the difficult relationship between us Germans and our past. Probably one of their most political songs (alongside "Links 2 3 4", "Amerika", "Ausländer" or maybe even "Mann gegen Mann").
Many songs are about the hidden, deep desires everyone has and raise the question about where to draw the line. So it is not surprising that some of their songs are actually deeply disturbing ("Mein Teil" for example, which tells the story of a popular case of cannibalism in Germany).
I could write all day, since Rammstein is probably the most complex band I know.

      @gi0nbecell 2 роки тому +5

True. Till is possibly the most gifted poet in contemorary music, maybe only bested by Alexander Frank Spreng ("Asp"). I would, along with many others, recommend "Deutschland", as it is a complex song, with even more complex visuals in the official video (including, but not limited to, the inclusion of Germania - a personification of Germany - as a black woman). But I would also appreciate a look at the "Schwarzer Schmetterling"-Zyklus (Black Butterfly cycle) by ASP. Asp's music is way more complex in terms of melody and tonality than Rammstein's, but serves more as a vehicle for the lyrics than the latter.
By the way, the band ASP ist written in all caps, whereas the singer/songwriter of said band is called Asp. Just mentioned it, as it can be confusing.
Fun fact: There is another difference, just from a writing perspective: while Asp is the main writer for ASP (and other bands have songs written by some of the members and then maybe arranged by the whole band), all Rammstein songs are put together by the lot. Whenever someone (even Till) comes up with a tune, a theme or a draft for lyrics, the whole band comes together. They won't produce any song that is not unanimously approved.

@@RogueReplicant "The proper term [for Rammstein] is "unlistenable crap" ☺️" - Unfortunately this is just an opinion, not a fact.
"Putting this crappy music on is bullshit. How can you fools bear to listen to this shit? 🤔" - It's pretty simple though, we've got two ears connected to a functioning brain.
"Getting this crap stuck in your head is like getting brain cancer, wtf 😬" - Still waiting for scientific proof to back up this thesis...
"I attempted to watch that crap, made it through a few minutes. Some people grow old but they never grow wise 👊 " - If to grow wise one needs to abandon his personal taste for the likes of others, I rather stay a fool for life.
"It's not about the video. It's the type of music, it's just boring af and sounds like a circus anthem." - To be fair, on a Rammstein song you will never find a bollocks-crazy guitar solo (even if Richard got one or two opportunities to shine), a drum solo (except for Weißes Fleisch in Madison Square Garden), or a bass solo at all. Flake will always play his synthesizer for synth sounds (oh wait, there are official piano versions of Rammstein songs! And what about Diamant?) and time signature is always standard 4/4 (except their track called "5/4", oh how foolishly simplistic and unoriginal...). But hey, this stomping, unrelenting simplicity is a huge part of their sound, and they have got beautiful ballads in their discography as well. And Lindemann's lyrics are always off the charts in their metaphorical grandeur, always fitting the either melancholy or sinister tone of the music. All of them do, what they do best, and that is "Tanzmetall", Industrial Metal or Neue Deutsche Härte. Perhaps it just ain't your genre?
"The only reason I'm even here is because I follow Doug's reactions. You fanboys really need to broaden your musical horizons." - Well, Doug is a great guy from what I can tell, but he did not seem to mind this track, did he? No, he went through the entire thing, smiling and open-minded, he pointed out the symmetrical tonal progression in the verses and he mentioned to reread some of the lyrics he didn't quite get on his first try. He even called it a "very enjoyable listen" in the video description and is willing to "give them another shot some time" (13:03), while you are not just here for Doug, but, judging by your seven replies in this and other comment threads, to "save" him and us from Rammstein, the "unlistenable crap". Maybe you should stop acting like a troll or an elitist and broaden your musical horizons yourself?
Oh and my taste stretches out from Ronnie Radke, LP and various metal branches including bands like Nightwish, Dream Theater, Tool, Haken, Architects and many more, over Steven Wilson and Poets Of The Fall, to old Progressive, to Rock and even Punk sometimes, to Rap and Pop at times (only if it's originally done though), to Folk and even to Funk. So that's that.
And even if Rammstein will never ever grow on you, they partly live of being mocked. Have a nice weekend, gentleman :)

Thank you very, very much. I am a huge Rammstein fan and never thought you would do this. Also a very perceptive choice on your part as this is one of their songs that is seldom reviewed. The most popular is "Deutschland -- Official Video" which currently has 175,084,170 views, but other reviewers have found use of it gets blocked almost every time. As a big fan and since you did not know they were that popular: they are primarily known as a LIVE band, especially after their now famous 2019 tour. So here are some key facts:
The Rammstein 2019 tour was the second highest grossing tour in the world of non-English language acts, behind only Korean “K-pop” band “BTS”. In Europe they were just behind Metallica and Ed Sheeran in total receipts: Sheeran; $147.63 million; Metallica $135.56 million; Rammstein; $131.26 million. Despite only playing 31 shows in Europe, for the 2019 world-wide all-languages category of “Rock Groups”, they were #3 behind only the Rolling Stones and Metallica, and in front of: Fleetwood Mac, KISS, Bon Jovi, U2, and the Eagles (in that order), and of all musical genres in all languages world wide, 4th in the world after only the above three “Rock” groups plus BTS, and world wide were ahead of:
    all country performers (#1 Garth Brooks $78.29 million; #2 Eric Church $70.67 million; #3 Florida Georgia Line $52.43 million, and #4 Carrie Underwood $51.86 million);
all “Pop” groups (#2 Arashi $115.35 million; #3 Jonas Brothers $109.87 million; #4 Backstreet Boys $101.36 million) and all “Hip Hop” groups: (#1; Eminem $42.82 million; #2 Drake $33.88 million, etc.).
Finally, the Rammstein Stadium Tour was shortlisted for the Total Productions International trade association group’s prestigious “Live Production of the Year 2020 Award”. Presented in London, England, February 24, 2020 (1,700 in attendance; Black Tie only), the annual awards event recognizes excellence in all facets of concert production, including stage design, stage lighting, sound quality, power tech, crowd security, transportation technology, as well as the managers and management companies of individual tours. The other nominees for Production of the Year were the Chemical Brothers, Marco Borsato, Muse, Stormzy, and Take That. The award was ultimately won by Stormzy, headlining “The Glastonbury Show”, June 28, 2019 (audience of approx. 135,000).
Here are some quick facts about Rammstein’s tour and stage (all statistics for figures above and below are from Touringdata.Wordpress.com; // Total Productions International: TPiMagazine, at “tpimagazine.com”, November 2019 “Production Profile: Rammstein” (12 pages); // and WIcreations MotionMag, Oct. 2019: “The Rammstein Case”, p. 25-29):
Total number of shows on tour: ……………………………………… 31
    Total Tour Attendance: ………………………………………. 1,293,176

    Olympiastadion, Munich, Germany).
Number of shows with more than 50,000 persons: ………. 9
The band released a time-lapse video of the 6-day construction event filmed when they set up for one of their first shows at the Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion, Dresden, Germany for June 12, 2019. This is at ua-cam.com/video/JgGuRKgvWQ4/v-deo.html. It has a respectable number of 10,063,739 views just on its own, as of today.
The best overall videos of the 2019 Stadium concert series are by UA-cam uploader “Rammstein Live by TheKeyboardfucker”. He has done fantastic work and all Rammstein followers should congratulate him and thank him for his efforts - its some of the best multicam by a fan that I have ever seen. Personally myself, I liked "Zeig Dicht" at ua-cam.com/video/bKTFBYC2XH0/v-deo.html; his multicam of "Deutschland" was blocked so he put it on Vimeo (UA-cam will block my comment if I include the URL). This one is very similar in style to the tracks on 'Sehnsucht', their second album - which the band described as 'tanz-metal'/dance metal. From that album, 'Engel', and 'Du Hast' are staple live tracks. Given your classical composition background, I'd suggest you give their album 'Mutter' a listen - it's arguably their magnum opus. From this, 'Mein Herz Brennt' and the title track both offer up a large, symphonic-leaning soundscape. (And 'Mein Herz Brennt' was used in a Mercedes advert.) You should also watch some live footage as their performances are renowned for the prolific use of pyros, given that lead singer Till is a qualified pyrotechnician (and as they say, most of their audiences do not speak German, so they decided to connect with the audience in another way, via awesome live presentations.) A very cool band!

Thanks for the great reaction. Keep in mind, that they're singing about their youth as they grew up in eastern Germany. Every time I see this video, I discover something new. There is just so much in it (for example a scene that refers to the famous painting "the liberty leads the people" by Delacroix which is originally about french revolution). In general, Rammstein make outstanding videos and the lyrics are imho the best contemporary german literature. Sadly, the music is often rather simple. If you know a lot about german history, have a look at "Deutschland" which deals critically and very in depth with its history. Another great one is "Pussy" which criticises sex tourism in europe in a very special way. I personally like "Haifisch" very much as it refers to "mack the knife" ore to be exact the opera "Dreigroschenoper" by Brecht (where mack the knife comes from).

About Rammstein's sense of humour: when the ladies storm the radio shop and grasp the receivers one can read their brand names - the first names of the band members ;-))
Marketing fun factor: When the video and song was released for the first time, the Rammstein crew used a huge video projector to beam it on a house facade at a busy inner-city crossroad in Berlin. That is, only the video without the sound. About 2500 people gathered there with their private radio receivers (e.g. mobile phones). The beaming started precisely when a local radio station played the song for the first time at 6:05 pm right after the news show. Was a wonderful atmosphere and evening.

Cool Ballades and Hard Industrial Sound is mixed. Wozld be cool to hear more of them. They also have a hughe Fanbase. Greetings from Switzerland!

If you loved this, you'll love their following songs: As many have mentioned "Deutschland" (from the same album) and "Mein Herz Brent" (Piano version it's an Operatic version of the same song)... The video for Deutschland is iconographic from the depiction of Germania (personified) and the Roterfaden (red thread that connects) does not pull any punches when recounting the history of Germany from the times of the germanic tribes vs the Romans to more infamous eras throughout the ages. Both videos are disturbingly beautiful

For a future potential Rammstein song, i highly recommend Mein Hertz Brent.. for an interesting comparison they did two versions. One the studio recording from the Mutter album, and years later a vocal and piano only version, which is very similar in style to Disturbed's cover of Sound of Silence.
It would be cool to see you react to both versions in the same video

"Wow!, I did not expect that", is a common reaction to Rammstein

As usual, more than a reaction video; educational & analytical. Cheers Doug.

Very nice. Rammstein are the Masters of simplicity. Typically, they sound heavier than this and their songs consist of basically a single riff. Doesn’t sound like a good idea, but it definitely works.
If you want a real audio-visual treat, check out „Deutschland“. But make sure to do it like here with pauses and rewinds, otherwise this stuff gets blocked easily.

"makes me feel like there's danger" he says - in the exact moment the lyrics talk about danger.

Wilkommen in the rabbithole of Rammstein ("tanz"-metal) - worlds best band in it's genre as far I'm concerned!

You opened a very deep can of worms with this one. The video for Deutschland, released around the same time as Radio, is even more powerful. It conveys the Germans' love/hate relationship with the history of their country.
