  • Catcher to pitcher communication is an integral part of today’s game, and especially with the Astro’s scandal a few years ago - a major emphasis has been put in place to attempt to disguise what pitch is coming in. Add in a pitching coach relaying signs to a catcher and there are several ways that the opposing team could pick up on the pitch that’s coming in. What is the best way for the coach to get signs in to his pitcher? Well we are going to dive into that today!

The flip side of hiding signs is picking up and relaying signs to the batter (within the rules). In the case of the runner on second, simple movements such as a jersey touch, hand sign or more innocuously, steps taken from a base, can be used to indicate pitch type from the runner to the batter. Solid video. Glad I found this channel.

Absolutely! Ive seen that done many ways... the game within the game is quite interesting to me.
      Thanks for the comment!

Great vid man, I always wondered what the mechanics were behind the catcher/pitcher sign system.
    If you are interested.
Mark Rober has a video on sign stealing. He developed an app that all you have to do is input the 3rd base coaches' signs and let the program know if the base runner stole or not. From there it can figure out what signs are to steal and what is noise. It's a pretty interesting video, definitely worth the watch.

Marc Rober is one of my favorite guys on UA-cam! Already seen that video (and use the advanced software for attempting to steal opposing teams sings).
      Thanks for the comment man!

I love this video man, MJH-Baseball also did a video on his sign system he uses for his little league teams. I always love the mental aspect of the game, even looking at the jomboy video its cool knowing that most likely the yankees knew about the sign stealing and came up with a adaptive way to counter act it.

Glad you enjoyed, I’ll have to check out that video by MJH-Baseball! Thanks for the comment.

Great video. As a coach it would be great to see how you make the randomizer to develop signs. I have been using the wrist band for a few years and think its a much better option as it eliminates the missed sign. The downside, like you mentioned, it takes time to change up the signs.

Great video and breakdown of the different signs. I remember the Nats did a whole thing during the 2019 World Series against the Astros because of fear of sign stealing which had outs plus one or inning plus one.
Do you think there is a way for the pitcher to know what pitch to throw without the catcher throwing down signs? It seems like with enough advanced computer programming any of the catcher signs can be hacked (as it really isn’t that complex, around 5 numbers).

You’re not wrong about signs always being pickable... some teams have gone to utilizing the randomized wristbands for both the pitcher and the catcher. May be a good solution! Thanks for the comment, Yitz!

Great video! As a college pitcher myself I have always enjoyed just the catcher calling his own game, but in the college world today pitchers have started wearing armbands as well. On my team, the pitcher and catcher wear the same armbands and both will receive the sign from the coach. I was just curious as to what you might think about this approach in baseball today?

I think it’s a very safe idea for keeping signs safe! I’ve seen many teams use it and it seems quick and easy. We actually just faced northwestern this past week and they used that same system.
If the pitchers are comfortable with it, then it’s all good for me. Thanks for the comment!

I had no idea that radios and ear pieces were legal. If the catcher can listen, can the pitcher too?

I don't understand the wristband? Is it numbered 1-10 and the coach holds up that number, catcher checks and gives call, the pitch is made...and the opponents would be like, "Oh, the coach signaled 7, the pitcher threw a change up, I guess 7 means change up. "
Or is it an explanation of signals, "2 wrist taps followed by a belt tug means curveball when someone's on second."
I am so lost. Wouldn't mind a more detailed explanation, just throwing it out there.

Good question - there are several ways to implement the wristband but the most common is with a string of numbers.
The coach May signal in “332”, which coordinates with a specific pitch on the catchers band which has been completely randomized. Here’s an example of one website that sells wristbands for a frame of reference: catchthesign.com/about/
If you make your own bands, or call the same number twice you may be giving away pitches - but the bands you purchase are randomized and you can swap the cards out whenever you’d like to keep your opponent off the trail.
Hopefully that helps, let me know if you have any other questions!
