Despite the limitations of the interviewer (and the unfriendly choice of a visually interesting but uncomfortably cold interior), these are 48 fascinating minutes of director/writer Xavier Dolan expanding in a stream of thought manner on his craft and his early films. He is open, generous and disarmingly modest. He is also willing to share that his craft is primarily visual in its presentation and continually evolving. In fact, for me, despite his cringing at what he sees in hindsight as “mistakes” made in his early films, the most interesting part of this interview was to observe Dolan’s own witnessing of his evolution as he both explores different material and experiments with different effects during filming. Above all, he loves what he is doing - seven films in seven years testifies to his devotion to filming - and even ending this exchange of cinema reflections was cause for a quick lament.
this interview felt like that bad tinder date where one party was treacherously deceived by the other person's profile pic.
looool
