  • An in-depth interview with director Peter Bogdanovich (She's Funny That Way, Last Picture Show, Paper Moon, What's Up Doc?).

Peter Bogdanovich is a legendary filmmaker whose career began in a similar fashion to our own project: interviewing filmmakers in a thorough yet conversational manner. His relationships with Ford and Welles, among others, have yielded indispensable books investigating these auteurs' films. His own filmography is just as expansive and intricate, including richly woven odes to classical filmmaking and quite a few films that experienced crippling studio interventions, resulting in films that reward close readings, revisiting (specifically the Director's Cut versions) and discussion.
Peter was in Toronto as part of Turner Classic Movies' Road to Hollywood tour, which presented classic films with special guests in ten cities leading up to the TCM Classic Film Festival and included The Last Picture Show.
The night before the screening, we were lucky enough to have Peter join us at UNIT BAR, where he shared charming, insightful and emotional stories on the topic of our favourite Bogdanovich films, specifically those that are criminally under-seen for various reasons: Saint Jack, The Thing Called Love, Texasville and Noises Off... He also mentions two new projects in development, including She's Funny That Way (aka Squirrel to the Nuts).
The Seventh Art is an independently produced video magazine about cinema featuring profiles on interesting aspects of the film industry, video essays and in-depth interviews with filmmakers.

He's always laid back, as far as I know. You can use his DVD commentary tracks as lullabies

For all his flaws, Peter was a brilliant man. He was a fascinating, captivating, interview subject. A library burned down when Peter departed. May he rest in precious, powerful peace.

Excellent--not so much an interview as an engaging, relaxed conversation. Bogdanovich is a treasure-trove of advice and anecdotes.

What a fantastic interview. Slow and thoughtful. Like a good conversation should be. Thanks for it.

Great interaction. Peter always delivers the goods with a knowledgeable interviewer. Charlie Rose was another good one with Peter.

Fantastic interview. They both seem to have no where to go, what a conversation.

Interesting about the ‘one foot in past, one foot in future’ as Orson Welles described himself in the same way (in video about filming The Trial) - that he is interested in the present and the past, but not in the future. Simpatico filmmakers, it seems!
Re the Commentary stuff - it’s great after you’ve seen a movie about 10 times - then watching w/commentary is a fun enhancement.

Peter carries the standard for ascots, God Bless Him.
The ascot industry had better prepare for his passing, to avert a crash.

For more on Polly Platt check out the podcast You Must Remember This by Karina Longworth. She delt with Polly's life and career in several episodes. Very interesting stories.

Polly Platt was an integral part of PB’s most successful films, a brilliant production designer, and went on to be an integral part of Gracie Films, co-producing Broadcast News and a lot more - she also helped put the team together who made The Simpsons. Not an appendage.

I like this intelligent interview, but the whole time I was saying to myself ," o.k. ,lets speed it up a little!" and "and guys ,lets try to be a little more animated for goodness sake".
I had no trouble to stop watching this and making sandwich and come back to finish the interview later with a caffeinated coffee....LOL.

I'm surprised the interviewer wasn't aware of Squirrel To The Nuts. Bogo has been trying to get that off the ground for a long time. It was originally going to star John Ritter i believe.
    Great interview nonetheless

The consensus is that Killer Joe is Friedkin's best film in decades. You didn't like it?
The changes to Nickelodeon were effective imo. It works far better in B+W than it did in colour.
