    This is the best review of the combo unit I've seen. I've owned one for a couple of months and have encountered many of the issues you highlighted. I also noticed it often gets stuck on load sensing, and I didn't understand the reason until seeing your video. Additionally, I've observed that pausing the cycle can sometimes cause the machine to enter a weird state, where the door remains locked due to the washer thinking there's a fault with the door latch, and have also encountered other strange behaviors after pausing a cycle. The only solution to unlock it is to completely reboot the machine by unplugging it. I'm hopeful for another firmware update, as it seems most issues with this combo unit could be resolved through a software update. I'm not sure if you're aware, but the service menu can be accessed by holding down the Pause/Start, Smart Dispense Detergent, and Timed Dry buttons simultaneously while the machine is turned off. This menu contains tons of diagnostic and test functions that are quite interesting. I'd love to see a video of you going into a deep dive of this menu!

      Hello and thank you for the information. I did not see any issues with the door latch on mine. As for the service menu I went back and forth on its inclusion in this video and decided against it because the video was already getting long and secondly because I was trying to keep it at the general consumer level. Ill agree that it is definitely worthy of its own video in the near future.

    Update on 2 GE Profile Combo Units... as of today, approximately 50 to 60 loads have been run in each unit with 0 buildup of "anything" on the Coil / Condenser!
    The modified filters have 0 issues.
    I vacuum the filters minimum once a week or when the machine notifies to do it. Once a week for me is laundry for 5 people across both machines.
    I continue to post videos of the modified filters during the cleaning process and inspect the modifications, and they are holding up Excellent.
    I will be putting together kits to be sold for the people that do not want to source the items and make everything fit on their own. I will prepare pre-done Kits of everything that is needed with simple instructions to follow that will take no more than 5 to 10 Minutes to complete.
    Kits are available . Includes pre-cut weather stripping for Top and Bottom, Weather stripping for the Rear, and a choice of upgraded Filter Pad. Electrostatic style or Merv 8 Style Media is white color on entry side, and (tacky) surface on exit side. The tacky surface stops the finer particles from passing through the filter. The pads are washable, however as of 2 months on them, vacuuming is working just fine.
    For the best protection, you can just replace them every 4 to 6 months also. The tacky surface will collect the finest of lint and keep it out of the coil without causing restriction of airflow. The primary screen is the biggest area that needs to be kept clean.
    Latest addition to the Filter also includes Plastic hold down washers to keep the pad centered and locked in place so no gaps can occur in the housing.
    I spent a lot of time and money to make this bullet proof, and it keeps my OCD in check.
    Contrary to what end users believe, if you do not modify the filter, cleaning it after every load will actually cause more problems. The reason for this is lint is getting on or past the upper and lower rail assembly and working its way past the filter. Every time you pull out the filter, clumps of lint will get by or shoved to the rear of the assembly which cannot easily be seen or cleaned.

    When adjusting/leveling the legs of the unit to raise it a bit, did you only need to turn the bolt clockwise and the unit raised or after raising it, did you need to turn the bolt to lock it in place? I looked at the GE leveling video and it was kinda confusing.

      @mconwell 9 місяців тому

      @@tk8665 I've had mine for 2 months and have had no lint issues. I do clean the lint filter after every wash and there is a surprising amount on the filter. And although it does look like there are airflow patterns (the lint is heavier at certain areas on the filter), I do not see any blow-by. I also use their brush kit accessory after cleaning the filter everytime and it has on occasion brought back a little bit of hair and lint. I see no lint or hair on my fins at all at this point. One thing that I think GE made a mistake on is saying you only need to clean the lint filter every 5 loads. I find that mine needs cleaning after every load.

    Great video! One point that I wish for more info on is the dryer temperatures of each cycle. There seems to be a lot of confusion online with very little actual information on the drying temperature. I also purchased this machine and was disappointed to find I could not limit the max drying temperature for certain loads. I washed & dried a favorite sweatshirt on delicate thinking it would be safe (tag says tumble dry low, like every single shirt I own except one) but it shrank. Copilot says the Normal cycle drying average temperature is 150 F, a full 10 degrees higher than the standard for a 'High' setting. I am relying on Copilot here because I haven't found any real data. Do you have any actual data on the drying temperatures?

    • @retrotechandelectronics
      @retrotechandelectronics  10 місяців тому

      Aside from the data I collected for temperature during the drying and posted there are no settings I know of that limit or adjust the actual temperature. Only auto sense,extra dry or de-wrinkle.

    Awesome walkthrough of the setup! Mine is being delivered today 😊 I think most of the drying issues people are having are because it requires a different way to do laundry, like you said most people are capable of shaking things out but just don't want to. Same with the lint maintenance that is required - have you seen the videos from Bens Appliances and Junk about how to easily modify the lint trap to greatly reduce lint escaping past to the condenser coils?

    • @retrotechandelectronics

    Just a quick note on your humidity measurements. The increase in humidity you observed as the load came back to room temp is measured as 'Relative' humidity and is expected. Relative humidity is directly correlated to temperature. As temperature decreases, relative humidity will increase with no increase in the air moisture content. It is a measurement of how saturated the air is at any given temperature. Measuring actual moisture content of the drum in gr/lb would be more helpful in this application.

We've had this washer since January and love it, but I have had a few loads my kids have loaded that did not spin correctly.. @@retrotechandelectronics yes I really liked that video. I haven’t had the same lint issue as you. One thing I make sure of is to wipe the rubber gasket on the lint filter well before replacing it. The issues you have leads me to believe the tolerances to make the seal work correctly aren’t good. The membrane is the first wall and the gasket is the second wall to keep larger particles out (hair etc). The foam filter is for the finer particles that should be carried away of they get past by condensation. I do believe from the size of the heat pump and the warranty given they did design it to last.

  • @ChaJ67
    @ChaJ67 3 місяці тому

    I have to wonder if that 'damp' feel, at least on a brand new machine is an illusion just due to the temperature it comes out at. At least on my new unit, if the clothes just sit there and cools some, it feels 'dry'. Only get that 'damp' feel right after it completes. I don't shake it out. I just put the clothes away and by the time they are folded or hung, it is back to a dry feel. Anyways, a lot of regular gas dryers are not all that great and the clothes / towels / sheets can come out damp, especially if you do a mixed load. It is just with this machine, it is easier to justify splitting it up a little more as it is very efficient and it does both washing and drying in the same drum, saving you time. Just put some of that time savings into doing an additional load instead of a mixed load and you are doing better drying wise than a traditional separate washer / dryer setup.
    This machine definitely could have used some better engineering around air flow and filtration. To try to keep this machine from being a lint filled cleaning nightmare, you definitely got to take action as soon as you get the machine. I am surprised you haven't tried something like weatherization tape around the lint trap. I see someone linking to their modification products to the filter and while expensive, it is tempting seeing how badly GE did on this. I mean when you get into fancy ultra-efficient heat-pump washer / dryer deals that cost a good chunk of change, the last you want is a cheeped out filter that leaves the heat-pump clogged because too much blows around the filter and a machine like this is going to dump plenty on those coils if it is not properly filtered. I think a key problem here is the seals on two different axis. The outer seal lifts the filter off of the main rear seal and so it can't seal up. The secondary filter is also poorly done and there has got to be a lot that bypasses that poor design. But really what is going to kill this machine the fastest is the primary seal doesn't seal anything. My fix is a $5 roll of weatherization foam tape around the lint trap. I have only done a handful of loads with the weatherization tape as it is a brand new machine, but does seem to seal up a whole lot better than what I saw with the first load without it. This is as in I checked the coils, cleaned, and then did more loads with the tape. With the tape the coils have stayed clean through multiple loads. Without the tape, the deposits could be seen right away and I immediately cleaned the coils. The problem is with air conditioning coils is while most of the deposit is on the front surface, there is always more slipping deeper into the coils and then depositing. So if it is slipping past the lint trap and onto the coils, there is the stuff in the coils that will still build up because you can't reach it without dismantling the machine. Most people are not going to dismantle the machine like what you do in a later video. I think most people can do the weatherization tape deal around the lent trap as that is super quick and easy and just intuitively makes sense.
    As for the buildup you see as the air makes it to the top of the machine, I guess this is expected with that sharp change in direction of airflow. The crap in the air has momentum and so continues up and contacts the top, where it can stick and so builds up. If they just had a less sharp change in airflow, it probably wouldn't build up so much in that hidden spot.
    My plan is to keep this machine. I think I have fixed it enough through a simple $5 modification for it to do the job. If I see evidence through more loads that this is not enough, maybe I will bite the bullet and buy the more expensive 3rd party modifications to the filter as that is still way cheaper than ruining this machine just because a key component was cheeped out by GE. Anyways, where I am at now my options are a machine like this, which pickings are slim, or go down to the laundromat. Or maybe I move again, but I really don't want to if I don't have to. Every place has its pros and cons and this one has its pros if I can just get this machine to fix the main con, which it looks like it can do if handled right.

    You… sir… this combo washer will last a long time for you as long as you use the proper brush and vacuum. It seems you will be willing to do the proper care for this machine. I’m pretty sure the people that really are getting wet laundry either have a faulty unit or their belt is not spinning to it’s max rpm on the spin cycle due to their own fault for not balancing the unit or putting unbalance loads in the unit according to the manual (small with large clothes).
    This maintenance should be done on normal washers and dryers anyway but people don’t. Dryers can usually live longer without it, but clogs can happen in the hose or unit. The amount of time saved from not having to transfer any loads is a super time saver that more than makes up for the minute for maintenance every few loads. Yes it is unfortunate you need special tools, but at least you’re efficient with your placement and organization.

The major repairs have involved a motherboard replacement due to the machine going dead. Next, the entire heat pump assembly failed. The product is so new the technicians have never seen it or been trained on it. Keep in mind, the 10 year limited warranty only covers the motor. There is only a 1 year warranty on the rest of the parts such as the motherboard and heat pump. @geappliances
