  • In this video I am going to show you a mineral that can be added to your pond or filter. It can help maintain good water quality and can be recharged many times.
    It is useful in a variety of situations. Such as when you are establishing a new pond, where the filter hasn't had a chance to develop a healthy biomass. Or when adding new fish to an existing pond.

    Straight to the point.
    A. Grab zeolite
    -bag it up in mesh/netting bag
    -wash off excess dust
    - ready to use in pond/aquarium for several weeks
    B. Recharge zeolite
    -grab bucket
    -fill with water
    -add salt and dissolve in water
    -add used zeolite. Ammonia will leach into salt.
    -when finished give a good rinse and back into the pond.
    Done.

    Hi, many questions today :-) Your videos are really well-explained. I was wondering if there is another use for the brine. If you use 25 kilos of salt, that water will be incredibly salty and while it can be good against weeds, I am afraid it will have too much effect on the rest of the plants. Do you know an alternative use for it? Also: can I use the brine multiple times? Like, I clean the zeolite once, keep the brine, and clean the zeolite again in that same brine, or do I always have to use new salt and water?

    • @leecalladine
      @leecalladine  3 роки тому +2

      The salt water can only be used a few times before it needs to be replaced. Don't have many uses for it other than the weeds. Fortunately it is not so expensive if bought in bulk.

    Awesome drum filter configuration. Im wondering if you go from a 1.5 inch PVC inlet to 2 inch PVC outlet because it creates more suction or if 1.5 all the way works the same.

    I have a new pond and added this. My hanna ammonia tester showed 0.41 ammonia. I added the bag of zeolite and a week later my ammonia was 0.49 so from what I can see, it has had no effect. Wasn’t expecting a zero reading after a week but I have seen nothing so far.

    • @leecalladine
      @leecalladine  4 роки тому

      Zeolite is certainly capable of reducing Ammonia, however it is not necessarily going to eliminate it entirely, especially at a time when the ammonia levels are rising quickly. It is possible that without the zeolite your after reading may have been much higher.

    My understanding is that Zeolite is not to be used constantly. I read it was only to fix spikes or to level things out so you can find the issue creating the ammonia. You can't just keep using this product and keep ignoring the actual problem. It's a band-aid not a cure. Also, on a side note the zeolite can be baked to recharge it too. I think it was 350 degrees for 30 mins and no risk of salt being added to the tank. I was looking for something with a higher negative charge than clay when I stumbled across zeolite. Turns out it's the same stuff sold in pet stores as ammonia remover for hang on back and canister filters. Of course, they don't tell you it can be recharged because they want you to keep buying their products.

    • @leecalladine
      @leecalladine  Рік тому +2

      Definitely not a substitute for a proper working filtration.

    • @bguen1234
      @bguen1234 11 місяців тому +1

      You absolutely can run zeolite in a filter forever. The nitrifying bacteria will still grow in the tank and as the zeolite becomes saturated over time the nitrifying bacteria will reproduce to take up the load. "Nitrifying bacteria being fed a given amount of ammonia can survive for a month or more without that ammonia source and when reintroduced to the same amount they almost immediately are able to process the same amount"

      Absorption materials often soak up treatments. Rendering them less effective. You wouldn't use it with salt because it would cause it to expel any ammonia it had absorbed. Finrot is often brought on by bad water conditions. I would definitely try to improve the ammonia. Perhaps by adding additional biological filtration.

      The salt you use to refresh the zeolite is rinsed off the zeolite. For a pond or for the zeolite use cooking salt, table salt is far to expensive to be used for refreshing the zeolite or dosing a pond anyway. Small amounts of salt, traces of salt will have no effect in your pond.
