NEW POND SYNDROME - Algae Bloom Solutions are easy when you understand biology and competitive exclusion.
Join us for a few minutes as we give you tips, do's and don'ts..
Here is a link to the products we used in the video :).....
    Beneficial Bacteria amzn.to/47LoaEp
    Diatom Treatment amzn.to/4bkAL4z
    Here's instructions for use.....
For a full sun exposure such as this pond has, you want to use a photosynthetic bacteria, which is why I recommend this Beneficial bacteria. amzn.to/42descD
The more sun, the better it works. It especially works well on ponds that have a lot of surface area like an ecosystem pond - as well as concrete ponds. A little bit goes a very long way!
Dose your pond 3x the recommended dose every 3 days until water starts to clear, then maintain dosage a normal rates weekly throughout the pond season where your pond water temperature is above 58 degrees.
During the winter months, switch to a winter blend of your choice and as the spring comes, begin to treat again with this formula. amzn.to/47KnD5p
All the best to you and your pond!
Again, I'm easily reached at the toll free number during regular business hours in California.

I would say when we get the green tint in the water (like small green particles) and the occasional blue heron :(
Last season I added aeration along with the filters and water fall but didn't go as heavy with the water hyacinths.
As your video points out about the dirt in the planters , my wife would set hanging baskets in the ponds to make up for not watering them occasionally :/

I like to add a couple of litres of sediment from the shallows of a healthy aquatic ecosystem to seed new ponds with a diverse food web of invertebrates which will soon feed on and clear up the algae, and give your fish, frogs or dragonflies plenty to feast on.

Hi, Carl, I know you haven't commented in a while, but I wanted to know more about particular aquatic plants we should avoid, as in those that will support algae versus helping to reduce it. You mention in the video that you removed less-desirable plants from this pond. I'm struggling with planktonic algae in an 800 gallon 3' deep pond with excellent aeration, deep shade from noon onward, and 3 5" koi. Pond is steady at 66F degrees. Following your recommendation of dosing with bacteria and using your recommended products, the water cleared greatly within two weeks, and the pond eventually cycled to where my ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels are good and processing within 24 hours. Now a week later, the water is greening up again to where I can still see a white object 2' down, but it's getting murkier by the day. I have creeping Jenny, sweet flag, water iris, cardinal flower, water lily, and pickerelweed planted in plain clay soil on a shelf in the water. The only change in variables I've seen in the last week is that I have been feeding the koi a little more as they grow (they eat all the food within an hour) and we got heavy rain that added about 1/2" of water to the pond. Thanks for any feedback you can provide.

    • @ColumbiaWaterGardens
      @ColumbiaWaterGardens  3 роки тому +3

      My dearest Scott..... 😜
You are overfeeding your fish, and the recent rain also fed your pond. Remember, what you feed your fish, you feed your pond.
Bacteria is a weekly maintenance thing and fish should only be fed enough to consume it all within 3 to 5 minutes - removing the uneaten portion for disposal.
The cloudy water will clear up following this recommendation.
Here is a link to the video you are asking for.

@@ColumbiaWaterGardens Thanks so much for your quick response and advice; I know it takes time and energy on top of your other interests/life. I'll dial way back on the food to 5 minutes (I've been getting overzealous wanting the little fish to grow) and will continue dosing weekly with bacteria. My local nurseries have cleared their aquatic plants, so I'll likely have difficulty finding taro, but it's now on my list after watching the video you provided. I recall seeing some in one of the big box stores a couple months ago, so I'll go out tomorrow and see if I can't find some. This is all a great learning experience since we are planning on building another much larger 2,500 gallon pond next year but wanted to start out smaller to learn the ropes some. Your videos and comments are a wealth of knowledge and ideas, so thanks again.

Yes, replant in plain soil that has no fertilizer. Then use aquatic fertilizing tabs pushed into the soil to feed the lilies.
Sand and kitty litter is a great option too, but nothing works like plain soil. To get the best soil, dig a hole a foot deep, and scoop from the bottom of that hole.
      Good luck:)

Green water can be your best friend. You as pond owner hate it but the fish love it (as long as it not too thick and taking away the oxygen). Green water indicates too many fish, overfeeding, insufficient filtration, and/or some other intervention such as over cleaning, medication treatment, etc. Taking away your obvious indicator can lead to more severe problems. I would limit food for a few days, add nitrifying bacteria, and add a dozen or so food supplement tablets of Folic Acid, 800 mg each tablet, every day until green water clears up. Faster bacteria growth, healthier bacteria, and longer lasting into the cold months, and faster bacteria growth coming out of winter. Just my humble opinion and 25 year experience.

Not arguing your point as it is valid... just adding to a possible omission on your part.
      Oxygen.
Algae produces oxygen in the daytime and consumes it out of the water at night due to photosynthesis.
If you want a green pond, go for it. Just supplement with plenty of oxygen.

Great question. For starters, any body of water can get clear under the right biology.
Biology is a process that sometimes quick. And although there is chemistry involved in biology, we do not expect immediate grand changes that occur under a chemical reaction using chemical additives.
This is why I shot this video. To give people hope.

Nice video but the fact is that bacteria from barley straw in whatever form is simply not enough for all ponds. The variables need to be factored in. Location: sunlight, rain runoffs, winds. Water quality: How often water changes, fish load ("Size " more important than number). Learning about the nitrogen cycle and so on. So after all that, you'll find that Uv light is the best solution. I went through it all .

@@ColumbiaWaterGardens Tough question. You know ponds are all unique. Enzymes are beneficial when there's a large amount of solids (muck) that should be removed with spring "waking" the pond. And the Uv has it's place with killing any parasites and free floating algae ( not on 24h a day, would kill off good bacteria). So it all depends on that ponds particular needs. I like simple, I do one test Ammonia level. There's my start. I haven't had the need for enzymes. But I'm not a professional pond guy with a hundred different ponds to diagnose.

@@rosepetaldrone3226 Thanks for your input. We have 300 stops per month on our maintenance and repair route. We service a great diversity of ponds and are having great success in adding jet pumps to our clients ponds. They are cleaner and healthier for sure.
One thing i have found regarding uvs is that if they are used to mask a problem they are detrimental. I dont mind adding them for sterilization purposes once the pond is balanced as an ecosystem.
With concrete ponds we adopt, we oversize everything. Uv, filter, and have great success.

I had put like 7 plants back in summer with potting soil that came with the plants... When the leaves were gone (there's a tree next to pond which in summer makes the pond be in shade) algae began multiplying, now it's all grassy, gotta drain the pond and remove it. I had like 6 in pots, 1 was in the actual water buried by rocks. Well, mistake made, never again, I hear people use cat litter for lilies and so forth, interesting.

Competitive exclusion. You have to remove the food supply of the algae and the algae dies.
There can be so many factors involved. Overfeeding, overfeeding food high in phosphates, lack of nitrogen absorbing plants, planting pits that are fertilized.....
There really can be anything that is feeding the algae, sludge buildup as well.

New to this video...having same issue outlined in this video. Using your method: a triple dose of Aquascape dry beneficial bacteria and a double dose of Aquascape SAB .
Repeat every 3 days until clear (currently on second application). QUESTION: should I be cleaning the biofilters at the same time ... or more importantly, how OFTEN should I be cleaning the biofall filters? thanks!

    • @ColumbiaWaterGardens
      @ColumbiaWaterGardens  2 роки тому

This is a great question. I actually have a video on my channel showing how to clean a biofalls filter - you may want to watch it. Directly answering your question for the time being... When you begin this process, you want to start off with a clean biofalls, because a dirty biofalls can be actually feeding the very food that your algae craves. So by removing the food source, the biofalls become more of a filter for now.
Once you acheive clarity, and you will, go ahead and clean the biofalls once more and fall into routine maintenance. You will know it is time to clean the biofalls when the sediment that is resting on top of the filter media is no longer reasonably containable and it begins to go downstream.
Another side mention...... DONT FEED YOUR FISH while this is going on. Their food may also be a source of the problem and the fish will chomp away at the string algae that is forming around the pond as well as insects and larvae.
I hope this helps you, and thanks for supporting my channel by subscribing and sharing helpful videos in your social media :)
      All the best,
      Carl

Thanks for your reply...yes I've watched the "how to video" I'm good at the how, it's the 'when' and 'how often".i read so many conflicting things on how often to clean these filters. So if I understand what you said: your recommendation is to clean the filters at the beginning of the "adding-beneficial bacteria & repeating every 3-days-til-clear-process", correct? that's what i've done, so I'm on the 3rd application (of the triple dose + double dose) tonight. So far, water hasn't cleared much but I'm gonna keep plugging along ... will keep you posted. APPRECIATE your response! People don't fully realize the impact that fertilizer has on algae. I don't think that the connection is made that algae is a photosynthetic plant, like a tomato bush. It needs sunlight, fertilizer, and boom! massive fast growth!
In a pond, algae exists because it gets fed. Want to get rid of it? Remove it's food.

This is an EXCELLENT tip!!! Water Lettuce and Water Hyacinth are some of the most efficient pond clarifying plants known to man.
What they are doing is eating Nitrate - which is THE primary food supply to algae. By removing a primary food suppply from the algae, the algae cannot thrive. It's still there, but it's under control.
It's a process that we call "competitive exclusion".
