    I have lived in Philadelphia, New Jersey and Chicago. I now live a mile from Detroit and work in the city of Detroit. I love it here! Detroit has everything other big cities have…entertainment, professional sports, water sports, restaurants and a beautiful river front…facing Canada. Again me and my family love it here. Detroit is in fact a hidden jewel.

      Lol, You didn't say you live IN Detroit. That says everything. Detroit neighborhoods are war torn POS. You wouldn't want to buy a home in a neighborhood in Detroit, raise a family there and have them attend Detroit Public Schools. Neighborhoods are just as important as Downtown areas in any major city.
      Only people who have money will be able to afford Downtown life and enjoy what this guy talks about. If you aren't living in the City of Detroit with your family, why not? You appear to love it so much.

    I live here. I really enjoy living here, but I believe you should give prospective Detroit residents some honest truth:
    5 years ago 2 of my childhood friends- my next door neighbors, and 2 others were murdered on my block in the month of February alone. 3 others were murdered within 4 blocks within four months. You should tell people before they move here, that we still have a very REAL problem with our 911 response, and violent crime. That is if 911 answers our calls. DPD is notoriously slow, and prefers to catch criminal after-the-fact, relying on cameras instead of having enough officers to patrol our streets. They made my friends' murders a cold case in 10 days.
    Just last week a Free Press writer wrote how he had to wait more than 25 minutes for an ambulance while he was having a stroke right downtown. My personal experience was the ambulance never arrived while I was seizing, and when my fiancé went to see if it might arrive, she scared off the thugs who were breaking into her car. I love my neighborhood. My family and I have owned this home for 50 years, and we've lived in the city for 4 plus generations. Unfortunately our council and our mayor- this administration, and the previous ones, give our tax dollars to the Illitches, Dan Gilbert, and other millionaire, who could afford their own projects, rather than hiring more 911 operators, more police, and more fire fighters. ☹

    • @EdButlerDetroit
      @EdButlerDetroit  Рік тому +8

      Sorry to hear about all of your trauma, but there is a lot more to this story than you have put forth here. Let's not make it seem like that is anything but uncommon. You stated yourself your family has lived in the house for 4 generations, but didn't say anything like that has happened to your family. City services are very poor, and I never claim them to be anything but... The city is constantly hiring more of these professionals, but there just aren't enough people willing to take the jobs. Detroit is no where near perfect, but definitely note as bad as some Detroiters try to make it....

      @@EdButlerDetroit My mother was robbed and beaten several times. While delivering newspapers I was nearly stabbed with a knife. While playing baseball with the very same kids (adults who were murdered) 3 gang embers kicked my face in. My garage door was kicked in and DPD tool >5 hours to arrive- and took 4 months to give me a police report that was way too late to take to local pawn shops. When I was 13 one of my neighbors was murdered 7 houses North of me.

      It still is a massive city. The metro area is absolutely fucking massive and spans across such a massive area and there's 5 million people who live across it. The actual part of Detroit is the one that's been experiencing these problems. However it definitely is changing a lot, and I hope it can recover and become a major city in the way it used to be, maybe one day.

    What up doe! Detroit is crazy, yet beautiful. I competed with a California family for my EEV home. Thankfully I won! I appreciate the infrastructure and beautification projects that are taking place in my District. Surprisingly certain city services are saving me money and preserving my almost 100 year old home. Most Detroiters are not taking advantage of living in the city. For Detroiters only, there is FREE or low cost tuition to most tech bootcamps which are a direct pipeline to major companies in the city such as, Rocket Mortgage, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon. Michigan State University partners with Apple on a Developer Academy. You can land a 6-figure career in Detroit! I could go on and on about other opportunities in the city. I'll leave that to Ed! :-)

As a person who is from that area has lived out west for most of my life, it's hard because the cost of living here is SO much higher and we also don't have great city services yet we pay so so much in taxes. Property tax here is insane expensive, too.

    My only question about moving to Detroit is when so much of home value is tied to how good a school district is, what is the state of the DPS and is it improving?

    • @EdButlerDetroit
      @EdButlerDetroit  3 місяці тому

      That’s is a good question, I’ll answer in two parts.
      Overall DPS is doing much better than it has in the past, and is on an upward trajectory.
      Secondarily schools are a factor in home values but not an absolute. As the majority of major inner cities have lower public school rankings than the surrounding suburbs. And Nationally major city values out pace the suburbs.

      Detroit has MANY programs for kids here, but there's a catch - your kids must be enrolled in the Detroit Public system (not necessarily charter) - in which, isn't the best one at all. We have very bright, creative and intuitive kids here but it takes a parent (s) to stay on the teachers, ask questions, always. Keep that communication open. Nothing to debate when it comes to Detroit, proper. Wherever you move to, research thoroughly. Know yourself and move accordingly. Don't try to force yourself into a culture idealizing what you think it could be, especially if you have children. You want your kids to be in school where at least 70-80% of the children know why they are there and are groomed with a plan for their future. Children shouldn't be martyred for adults with dreams.

    I’ve always been curious to go to Detroit and never been. Whenever I’m
    in Michigan, I visit the northern part in Traverse City. I would ask in small talk about Detroit that the locals referred to as “south state”, that very few even venture to. I hear similar answers referring to the auto manufacturers bust and the city is dilapidated and high crime. I notice that TC is predominantly Caucasian so I am skeptical of the views of the older generation. It sounds like the city has changed and a new Detroit post auto industry is emerging. I will add to my bucket list to visit 😊.

      Yea the older locals in the northern part of the state have no concept at all of what Detroit is now. Can’t be too hard on em because we have locals who live 20 minutes north of the city that have no idea either, because they never venture into the city limits.

      It sure has changed almost at almost a 360 degree clip. It has alway been a rift between the upper peninsula & the lower peninsula. TC is lower peninsula, but at the top by the UP. They claim Detroit/Metro Detroit gets all of the perks & tax breaks in the State. This is where the tax revenue comes from.

      The other irony of this is people up north and to the west of the state will also say to avoid the SE in general, but that's because like people out of state, they don't really know where Detroit and the suburbs even meet, so they use that lazy answer. SE Michigan in general has every lifestyle you can want, and different communities to offer whatever politics float your boat. This region was thrown in a tailspin in the 70's and 80's, but wer were doing particularly well in the 90's. The 90's were a low point for Detroit the city, but when things started to turn around. All this complication is why no one will say anything good about Detroit in other parts of Michigan. Here is good way to test them, and their patience, lol. Ask, if Detroit is so bad, how come that county and Oakland County to the north produce so much of the state's GDP. Then ask how they can say Oakland County, like 21st richest county in the country, could be a bad place to live. Their reaction to this will te you all you need to know.

    I don’t know if y’all are talking about “metro” Detroit, but nobody wants to live in DT Detroit. It is a shit show. Now Farmington, Farmington Hills, Rochester, etc.
    My guess is yes. I can get with some of this what this guy says if that is what he is talking about, but he should be more specific. If he is including DT Detroit, then he is delusional because Detroit has so many properties in the land bank that you can purchase for nothing it’s crazy. It has a LONG way to go before it becomes a city that people want to look at. LOTS of homelessness, high crime, and still lots of abandoned buildings (although they are slowly tearing some of them down). The waterfront and Ford Field area are some of the exceptions. Overall, metro Detroit yes, DT Detroit, hell no!

      I think you may need to spend more time in the city besides the occasional weekend trip to ford field. There WILL be a time when Detroit real estate will be an intelligent investment. That's when those who live in Detroit finally reach the point when they have learned from their mistakes and vote accordingly. Piling investment money into an area that still insists on treating crime and punishment as a social justice issue instead of as a cultural issue is NOT solving the underlying problem. Fix the underlying problems... lock up the criminals and throw away the key; clean up the local government corruption; stop unions from chasing away productive businesses and workers in favor of lazy leeches who don't want to work; then you won't need to BS people into buying.
