@Tgon Mwort Chicago level of crimes is not different from any other big city, tbh. The media blows it up. If you look it up, Chicago isn’t even in America’s top 10 as far as dangerous cities. They’re all down south.
I was recently back in Detroit about a month ago. I moved there from Toronto and hadn't been back in 30 years!!! I was extremely impressed with how Downtown Detroit has been built up! Very, very nice. The inner city part of the city is still a dump though.
Most of the Mediterranean restaurants are actually Middle Eastern restaurants owned by Middle Eastern people such as Lebanese Arabs, Iraqi Chaldeans, Turks, and other Northern Middle Eastern people. FYI, Mediterranean also means Middle Eastern people since Middle East(Western Asia) borders the Mediterranean sea as well.
@Jasmine Hite Yes!!! That's why as a Northern Middle Eastern woman, I have a hard time moving to other states. The food is amazing. Especially the Middle Eastern food that's made here is so yummy. You can't find that in other places in America.

I just flew back from Detroit. Coming from Florida, where most people are nice to just get an in and ask for stuff..in Detroit the people are so friendly. The 1st 2 or e times I was expecting the bs to follow a friendly encounter..it never happened..also no McDonald's, burger King, etc downtown..that I saw. I could easily live downtown..walk to sports events, restaurants, etc..my wife and I have wanted to dump south Florida for the D.
On the upside, I LOVE Downtown Detroit! So many new bistros, restaurants etc. I wish they would bring back the ethnic festivals at Hart Plaza! I really enjoyed those, and the FOOD!

I found your video incredibly helpful and honest! I currently live in California and I’m in the process of looking for homes in Michigan, it’s exciting but a little nerve wracking at the same time!
I wish Detroit would utilize Belle Isle more. Put some restaurants, some bars, a nice river front walk or even some high rise apartments and bring back the zoo . I wish they would also bring back boblo island where they would have the carnival/ festival. I believe I was born the year they closed it. 1991 right?
I agree to a person from out of town Belle Isle looks forgotten. It just needs a refresh with some restaurants. I’d skip the bars or violence will follow.
Another excellent and thorough video! I can relate very well. I was born and raised in Detroit, went to another state for college, lived in NYC most of my adult life and moved back to Michigan six years ago. In MI, I’ve only lived in and around Detroit. Ditto to everything you pointed out re: the joys and pains of residing here. Having spent significant amounts of time elsewhere, I think Metro Detroit is great place to call home. The cost of living, for example, is excellent here vs. other areas, particularly in and near major California cities in the NYC area. For that reason, I’m planning to buy a home near Detroit and just enjoy traveling to other places. Thanks so much for putting a well-versed and fair spotlight on Motown!
I moved to Sherwood Forest in 1969. I am raising my kids here now. I have never seen the neighborhood in such fine condition. Owners are renovating, the LGBTQ neighbors are fine custodians, they really become active in the social functions, and beautify their properties. The homes are now selling at $450-500k, and are built with high quality 1920's materials. Vintage oak floors, no drywall, only plaster. Doors are solid wood, these homes were built by auto executives 100 years ago. To build the equivalent homes today would cost a fortune. The neighborhood has very low crime, with 24 hour security patrol. Families come from all over to celebrate Halloween here, after all, Sherwood Forest is haunted. We also have wild deer, wild turkeys, chipmunks, robins, blue jays, squirrels, opossums, woodchucks, racoons, and rabbits. There are no stray dogs, but many roaming housecats. The new restaurants on Livernois have caused mice proliferation, but the cats eat them up, or bring the dead mice home as a gift.
I'm a wealthy man, so I actually brought an old Crown Vic whenever I drive through the more seedy neighborhoods to visit my brother. He lives near the old Packard plant and when we were young we would explore it.
When I visited back home in the DTW, I had a LIST of restaurants I wanted to eat at. Only got to 3-4 of them, but there's always a list of places to eat in Detroit.
I visited Detroit in 2017 and stayed at the Westin Book Cadillac. I never understood having two hot dog locations side by side at Michigan & Griswold. (Lafayette Coney & American Coney). Regardless, enjoyed my guilty pleasures 3 times that week.

You’ve never been to Pittsburgh, PA then 😂. We have potholes everywhere! Entire busses have caved into the streets! It’s because of the snow and the way they treat the streets! Michigan and PA are cheap AF!
I've never seen or heard of you before I tell you what you did a good story I like to hear you do some more I've been a lifelong resident and Detroit for over fifty years and I still love it it seems like it's getting I have good neighbors and I hope everything is going good for everybody and everybody try to make it to your next thing I'm all the time I miss all the Motown people they are always will be the rock stars of the city of Detroit take care hope to see you again dude what a good job you do thank you so much enjoyed it
I grew up on Seven Mile & Livernois Always lived on the Westside of the city! Yes, the public schools are bad and always been overcrowded as far as I remember, but a lot great people came out of Detroit, car insurance is outrageous, Summertime is my favorite time around city, Belle isle is nice, the museums are filled with such a rich history! The public transportation is one of the worst, had to ride a few times when I had to wait to buy new cars when I got rear ended, or someone stripped my car etc. I personally wouldn’t encourage people to move to Detroit as someone who lived here almost my whole life. You can get some nice homes here for a decent rate. I can tell you the good, the bad, and in between of Detroit. I personally like the North Rosedale Park area off of Grand River and Puritan areas by the Southfield Freeway. Sherwood Forest has your every huge house need, W Outer Drive has a lot of nice homes.
See that’s the thing man, man of us Detroiters can’t see the visions because we grew up here, and kind of feel like the D is always going to be the D. I’m here to tell you brotha, 10-20 years from now the city is going to be the place to be. And everyone who doesn’t buy now will be kicking themselves that they didn’t. The city is changing, just a matter of home many of “us” will be along for the ride.
somer nights are the best and spring days time, A con is low opportunity so and it's also a pro because open markes to start new business with low compation
One correction. Detroit gets around 200 sunny days / year, which is about the national average. Other days are cloudy or mixed. It never crossed my mind until I lived in Socal. More sun is nice, but at the same time I miss the diversity and different experiences you get with changing weather.
Not sure where you got your stats from. Detroit is tied for the fewest sunny days in America (120) with Rochester, Buffalo and Cleveland. Thanks to the Great Lakes! Summers and early Falls are pretty nice, but outside the Mother's Day to Columbus Day window, it is pretty unpleasant.
i was thinking the same thing- but i would really question 200 sunny days . I remember going back to visit my parents when they were alive- and the sky was nearly almost milky - the narrator just said -over 200 cloudy days /year- and i am more with his estimate - it can get depressing some times
Coney island is the best! Love the chilli cheese fries. Grew up in suburb of Detroit but my Dad loved Detroit (he grew up there) and always took me there. Feel in love with it. People are so friendly there. Though driving down there sucks due to the roads.
Ed, thank you so much for talking about the cultural diversity that you can find in the Metro Detroit area. I'm most likely moving there with my fiancee at some point, and as someone from LA, one of the most important things for me is being able to experience different cultures. Many real estate people focus on the amenities that you can get in places, but I value the ability to experience cultures more (esp when it's through food and markets). My fiancee is Syrian, so I love to experience the legacy of the Arab American population in Detroit, and it's nice to hear that there are many others! Cultural diversity is one of the strongest suits of any city in America, in my view!
At least he was being sincere 😂😂 California is too damn dangerous, all those gangstaers from Los Angeles and all that , ain't nobody say nothin about that so I can say Detroit is almost the same thing. We're in the same boat 😂
Weather was both a pro and con lol sooooo true. Interesting enough I often enjoy our winters too. We have those days and sometimes weeks that’s crazy but it’s nice. The city don’t mind throwing salt it’s the fixing the roads is the issue 🤷♀️
Hi great video great info about Detroit. I considering moving to Detroit and i want to ask how long the winter last specially when it gets really cold. Thank you for sharing.
Are you kidding me about Somers being pristine? The Summers were some of the most brutal humid nasty times that I spent there. The winters are even worse when it snows in feet and you can't get to the grocery store and the power's out as brutal dude.
Born & Raised in Southwest Detroit , really born on the East side my dad and mom and their parents from Black bottom neighborhood they lived on Congress 🇲🇽
When I was a kid in the 50’s I remember Great Lakes Barbeque…..think it was on Grand River…..best dry rub EVER…..!!…..remember when Belle Isle had a zoo…..my dads family lived in Windsor….take the bridge or the tunnel……
I live in the Woodbridge area, and I was born in Detroit...but Chicago still has Detroit on every area. They're trying to make Detroit a mini Chicago, but I don't know if that will ever happen. But yes we do have Belle Isle, while Chicago has the Lincoln Park Zoo....and so much more. Detroit has a lot of work to do.
if the people are so great, how come the crime rate is so high, and none of them take care of their houses or their neighborhoods. Detroit is the people, and problems that detroit has come from the people of detroit. the high crime rate and corruption are not foisted onto detroit from on high.
You've obviously never been to Detroit! The housing stock in the city is unrivaled. People (owner occupied) take care of their property. Sorry Trumpster, you're mistaken.
@@geoffreyselvage1673 I live in metro detroit. I have volunteered many a time cleaning up parks in detroit. I had a great aunt who lived her whole life in detroit because they refused to leave. The volunteering part was what finally turned me off to detroit. I would see tons of well intentioned metro detroiters come into detroit to clean up, and return a year later and it would be exactly what it was before. Nobody from detroit would ever help out, and would actually use the area and some of the lots next to the park to just dump their garbage. We even had to get rid of all the big rocks because kids take them and vandalize surrounding buildings with them. I am of course NOT talking about downton, midtown, corktown etc. etc. Mostly the west side.
My aunt, who was born in Detroit, always told me that who ever handles Detroit tourism department needs to say "You are getting 2 for 1". Visit Detroit and if you want a change of pace, you have Windsor next door.
Downtown Detroit is very nice, there is always great musicians there, the Fox Theater is beautiful. .like any big city you just don't go wondering around..
Lots of great areas around the area to move in. There’s bad areas too as with any major city. You just have to do your homework on the area that you’re interested in.

How are ubers and lifts in Detroit? Are they popular? Are they expensive? I’m moving to Detroit and don’t have a car so I’m curious!
They’re pretty readily available, not much surge pricing, so price generally usually depends on distance.
Welcome to the city!
@@EdButlerDetroit thank you for such a quick reply! Can’t wait to come explore 😋

Just GET ARMED & TRAIN OFTEN ! Like ANYWHERE, “SITUATIONAL AWARENESS”
is a MUST !
Good podcast cuz .fr cuz Arnold!!!
Thanks cuz!
Yes sir,the worst roads I've ever rode on. My entire car dropped in one on the freeway when I was there. Over all I love the D though.
Man! Those potholes are no joke, especially if you catch one on the freeway!
You’ve never been to Pittsburgh, PA then 😂. We have potholes everywhere! Entire busses have caved into the streets! It’s because of the snow and the way they treat the streets! Michigan and PA are cheap AF!
I've never seen or heard of you before I tell you what you did a good story I like to hear you do some more I've been a lifelong resident and Detroit for over fifty years and I still love it it seems like it's getting I have good neighbors and I hope everything is going good for everybody and everybody try to make it to your next thing I'm all the time I miss all the Motown people they are always will be the rock stars of the city of Detroit take care hope to see you again dude what a good job you do thank you so much enjoyed it
I really appreciate that! Thank you for watching and being a great Ambassador for Detroit!
I grew up on Seven Mile & Livernois
Always lived on the Westside of the city!
Yes, the public schools are bad and always been overcrowded as far as I remember, but a lot great people came out of Detroit, car insurance is outrageous,
Summertime is my favorite time around city, Belle isle is nice, the museums are filled with such a rich history!
Would definitely love to move there for the techno
The birthplace!
Cool, video.
Youre the only person to talk about the insurance costs when making these types of videos.
Had to let the people know, it’s definitely something that needs to be factored in. Thanks!
@@EdButlerDetroit no doubt.
I use to live on 7mile and alcoy I was cool everyone went to school at vonsteuben and Osborne high.
that early turn up was real wen we were kids going to Canada
It was like the minor leagues, got us ready for the big game at 21 haha
Those days were priceless!
Coney island is the best! Love the chilli cheese fries. Grew up in suburb of Detroit but my Dad loved Detroit (he grew up there) and always took me there. Feel in love with it. People are so friendly there. Though driving down there sucks due to the roads.
I think I may have a chili cheese fry today because of this conversation lol Thanks for watching!
Which suburb
That’s awesome Dan, thanks for sharing. It’s definitely an understated talking point about the Detroit Metro.
Not gonna get that much in the 👌
I live in Gwinnett Georgia
CLOSER TO L A DIVERSITY WISE
Check out Dearborn MI, right outside of Detroit for the Arab American experience here.
At least he was being sincere 😂😂 California is too damn dangerous, all those gangstaers from Los Angeles and all that , ain't nobody say nothin about that so I can say Detroit is almost the same thing. We're in the same boat 😂
detroits architecture (downtown buildings) are really impressive.
I appreciate that, the winter starts around December and usually wraps up around mid to early March
You’re a super like-able fella :)
Thanks Nicole! I really appreciate that. ☺️
Now I know the meaning of making a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
I have never heard that saying before until now! haha I appreciate it.
Every thing you said is the truth
Appreciate that! Just trying to be real.
@@EdButlerDetroit keep up the good work brother
Great video!! Appreciate you providing a realistic perspective on the city. East side Born and raised!
Yea I had to tell the real truth, but so much more to offer, than listed. East side baby! ✊🏾
Being a realtor in Detroit you may want to put away the Michigan shirt and buy a few from Wayne State and Detroit Mercy.😉
There is nothing like a Michigan summer. Best in the country
Your not wrong there!
Buddy’s Pizza on 6 mile and Conant, Mexican Village restaurant in Mexicantown. Roads are bad there. I grew up in Birmingham and Royal Oak.
Are you kidding me about Somers being pristine? The Summers were some of the most brutal humid nasty times that I spent there. The winters are even worse when it snows in feet and you can't get to the grocery store and the power's out as brutal dude.
So much going on and need a major change
Change is on the way!
100% with the Pro #1 ... Oh and we love your intro too!
Thanks! I’ve been thinking about updating it, so glad to hear it’s still solid! 👍🏾
Detroit is older than Chicago fam
We build 30 percent of America so please do not put us in Chi towns shadow
The Motor City is in its own league
@@andregreen6574 lol ok ...thanks
My grandma relative used live there they passed away
Sorry to hear that, yes the Detroit roots run deep for many!
How is the music scene in Detroit?
Some of the best music in the world of all types comes from and out of Detroit. Beginning with Motown music.
if the people are so great, how come the crime rate is so high, and none of them take care of their houses or their neighborhoods.
@@geoffreyselvage1673 unfortunately I have been to Detroit. THATS the problem.
@@alexanderryan1176 And where do you currently live? So I can have a point of reference.
@@alexanderryan1176 Thanks for your service, now please answer the question. Where do you live?? Please answer the question posed to you.
Coney island !! I move out of Detroit some years back. I can't get a good coney dog in PA.
They just aren't the same anywhere else! haha
My aunt, who was born in Detroit, always told me that who ever handles Detroit tourism department needs to say "You are getting 2 for 1". Visit Detroit and if you want a change of pace, you have Windsor next door.
100% she was correct!
Thinking on moving there soon. Glad for the tips. Might have to look you up if ever need a tour guide.
that's what's up bro,.
Detroit in the house great video ❤️❤️❤️
Great video
Thanks for watching!
Hi bro from cold Russia! Good chanel. I'm waiting for new videos about Detroit !
Dope vid bro never home but always repping. Man miss the Giant Slide day 😤✊
Appreciate that man, and yea RIP to the slide, but i don't miss the leg burns from it! lol
I'm from Detroit but left when I was 17 I'm now 70 but Detroit has fallen to a new low I don't think it will recover 🤔
Linda I think you may want to visit again soon, there are some amazing things happening, and the city is in a better place than it’s been in decades!
and that run was no joke to chene park
No lies detected there! Those stairs were crucial! lol
I used to load my big truck at Lawton and Buchanan.. and got robbed at Rosa Park/Michigan Ave at 1am..
Shit I’m over in Texas and I miss the food in Michigan. I think the cold weather makes people get creative with some comfort food
Downtown Detroit is very nice, there is always great musicians there, the Fox Theater is beautiful. .like any big city you just don't go wondering around..
You can wander around but just have common sense and awareness like anywhere else. Thanks for watching!
great job on my favorite city!
Thanks! Gotta love the D! 💪🏾

Dont do it.
Please make a video about immigrants living in Detroit! I'm thinking about moving in with my wife and we'd like to know how's life there!
Lots of great areas around the area to move in. There’s bad areas too as with any major city. You just have to do your homework on the area that you’re interested in.
