  • I have TWO solutions for building DIY photography studio reflector holders for less than 10 bucks - for both! I will also show you a cool studio lighting tutorial and inexpensive way to create a broad light modifier for your speedlight or monolight for only a dollar!
    I have been getting lots of requests for more DIY portrait studio gear so as follow-up to the PVC portrait background stand, I want to show you a real easy way to create a set of reflector holders that are even easier to use than the expensive ones.
    The two holders support Gobos and flags. A Gobo goes between your light source and your subject and its used to alter or shape the light. A flag also goes between your light and your subject to block the light from reaching a part of your scene or it is used between your light and your camera to prevent light from reaching the camera lens and creating unwanted flare.

    thank you for the tips Joe. I have built both the backdrop stand and flag holder. The price of the flag holder is as you said they were in your video. The portable backdrop stand is a little more expensive but less than buying one. Again Brother thanks for what you do because I can't afford all the equipment it takes to do this photography thing I love and you are helping to make it so much easier. Keep the ideas coming and I am watching you everyday. Oh, I do shoot pictures everyday too.

    Just built this thing. It's perfect. And I'm NOT spray-painting it black...gonna leave it Home-Depot white, out of sheer DIY pride! Also, I did not put the female adapter on the mounting end, but just left the stub of the 1/2" PVC, which fits PERFECTLY over a light-stand spogot! And then I just put the thumb-screw into the 1/2" stub. So slick! Thanks!

    If you're into this kind of DIY work, look up Dean Collins and his PVC pipes diagrams. I believe it was called "Tinker Tubes" and Bogen was marketing it as Lightforms. It was huge in the '90 ;)

    That looks great! I'd advise caution when using the tablesaw though. The method in the video has finger literally about an inch from the blade. That is how fingers are lost. Since it's a "T" fitting, it'd be easy to insert a piece of PVC into the T and use that to push, enabling your fingers to stay far away from the blade..

    To make life easier when cutting the threads A) get a 1/4 20 by 3/4 inch self tapping screw and reuse it. For a better option get a 13/64 twist drill bit and a 1/4 20 starter tap from a hardware store. You may also want to get a 5/16 drill and 3/8 16 starter tap since these are common sizes used for photo gear.

    • @dominicwroblewski5832
      @dominicwroblewski5832 5 років тому +1

      Thanks for the likes. I would like to add that using a High Speed Steel tap on PVC is like a hot knife through butter. If you are going to use it on aluminum put some WD40 on the tap and in the pre-drilled hole. Turn the tap twice then back it off a 1/4 turn to break the chips made by the tap. If you are going to tap steel use 3 in 1 oil or thin motor oil. If you intent to tap through more than a 1/4 inch get some Tap Magic for the type and grade of material you will be using. The job will be better and the tap will last for a long time.
