I have searched for instructions for outdoor setups for interviews on a budget and most of the videos required expensive lighting equipment. I was a little discouraged because I already made an investment in a camera and several lenses. But I found your video and man, thank you! I wanted the best for less lighting setup to maximize my productivity and return on investment (ROI). Again, thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge! ✊🏾👊🏾✊🏾👊🏾
I cant get over these series of videos... He is the new Tom Antos... and WOWZA he may be the best teacher in the world... So blessed by these videos... can i invest in you? Your abilities and teaching style are going to transform the world of future creators. They already are doing it..
How is this quality education free?! Amazing work, Brady. Not only are you extremely talented, but completely willing to and enthused by sharing your skills and knowledge with the world. Hats off to you, my friend.
Just stumbled across your channel - amazing tips and lighting techniques. I’m an aspiring filmmaker and I’m really trying to hone my lighting skills. I would definitely be interested in a video on how to make a diy scrim. Keep up the great videos.
UA-cam recommended this to me and i thought why not leave a comment from my view as a Film Student. I like this kinda light setup because it is light and easy but i prefer to have more contrast in the face. Take the Bounce a few steps back and maybe a litte bit more from the side. Or try the opposite and take light away with the dark side of the bounce. A lot of this stuff isn't an exact science, do what looks good. I love the one Bounce setup for moving shots because you only need one person to hold this thing and run besides you. I think this kind of very flat and balanced light on the face would be great for talking head interviews or a very happy and positive movie. More contrast more drama. Lastly my thought on the harsh vs soft light on the face. Men tend to look better in harsher light and woman look better in softer light. This is what i was taught and what I also would agree with. If you really try to look for it most Movies and TV shows do exactly that. Men have harsher more defining light while women have a softer more flattering light even if they are standing in the exact same spot. Not always the case but I notice it sometimes.
Man, that was amazing. Thank you so much. I've just started filming myself for instagram reels, and I'm in Brazil, where things are really expensive... I like to film outdoors, in parks or close to forests, during the day, of course, I wanted to increase the lighting aspect of the video, but what light is cheap and can do the job? Against the sun? None. Your idea is way better than any light I could think of buying. I can't begin to tell you how much you've helped a brother out. I'm really grateful. Peace
looks nice! but depending on the projects, may I add to say that a negative fill would have helped out a little to get a less flat subject! but still nice tips! thank you!
who’s the hater that owns every light out there that disliked this video smh. great video brother, keep up the good work ,its incredible how good this looks with all natural lighting !
In the fashion world, the 'before' (perhaps with a pro mist added and exposed lower for the skin) is preferred. Backlight is the enemy of high fashion :) This is to say that each style and approach has its place.
I’ve been trying to find your channel forever! I’m learning cinematography and you’re channel helped me with my first short film. Thanks and happy to subscribe! 🍊
Love your channel. The way you bounced the light when the sun was behind the subject in lovingly referred to by some as the "sun sandwich". I personally like the look of it but some argue because the sun is coming from the opposite direction of the key light source, it can look unnatural. While it's more difficult to get right sometimes, if you try bouncing from the same direction of the sun you can make the sun look like it wrapping around the subject more (so if the sun is backlighting the subject on the right, you would bounce from the right as well instead of the left). That being said I still love your work and you inspire me to do better, just something to try. Keep it up!
@@BradyBessette I wish I could claim the info as my own lol. If you haven't found the wandering DP podcast already you might enjoy the breakdown episodes. He goes in-depth on big-budget lighting. But you can take the advice with a grain of salt because you do better work than I do! lol
DIY scrim video would be great, but holy cow! I want a BTS on your light set up for this dialogue section. Gray curtains and ND film to cut the window light I assume? What did you use for the soft lighting across your face.
Your video was very informative and straight forward... Also, your choice of music was calming and NOT distracting, like so many other youtube videos. Thank you!
I have always struggled with hard shadows in the sun!! Hahaaaa!! I guess now I definitely have to hit the DIY store soon!! Not even a week watching your videos and I have learnt a tonne!! Thanks a lot for the work you're doing man!! It is much appreciated!!!!
LOL @ 0:59 - Great video! I think people get too caught up in thinking they NEED lighting in a situation like this to overpower the sun. While it may be easier in a sense, it's not on the wallet! The frames where you're simply bouncing light on the white side toward her looks so clean!
Thanks for making this video. As someone just starting I don't have stands or scrims, I just have one of those 5 in 1 reflector/diffusor items. One of my biggest questions is how to film someone outdoors using shade to keep direct sun off without making the background look very bright and washed out. I've been waiting for cloudy days to do my outdoor filming to avoid this.
The easiest way to pull this off is to just simply have a grip hold the bounce and walk with the talent keeping it in relatively the same place. Usually works well enough for something like the second setup with the sun at the rear.
This video is filled with so much information that i can't even express my gratitude. I would love a video on a diy scrim and also would you recommend buying a small 5 in one reflector like 24in or should i buy the tradiotional 43 inches.
That means so much! Thank you so so much! I will definitely work on that video and I would recommend no SMALLER than 43 inches. Often times I feel like that just barely gets by when lighting models and actors. Unless you’re doing small product stuff don’t get 24. It’s important to keep in mind that it not only needs to cover the subject you’re shooting but the area in frame around it to make it look unnoticeable
@@BradyBessette hhmm okk 43 it is. I am looking to step my lightning game up a little, i use a led light with a 45in umbrella and it workes beautiful but don't have a rim light or fill light. The 5 in one reflector would be a good thing to put in my kit right.
amazing video brady, i will like to see something about different type of diffusion, am struggling with that right now, or meavy how to make a box light like a chimera light, keep doing great videos :D
In my opinion, for the thumbnail I personally like the before photo.
5 figure debt for film school, or watch Brady's videos. You pick.
you know, I got so excited to repost this to my story that I forgot to comment it! thank you!

Early or later in the day for a lower sun. Backlight.

Wow, That`s Amazing 😍😍
If you have a car dashboard UV reflector, you can use it to reflect light. I've done it with some buildable rack poles I had lying around at home 😂
