- Doing a quick before and after on this Volkswagen Passat CKRA TDI with a MR Tuning "Stage 2" tune. Includes downloading the tune to the powergate V3 flasher, a stock vs tuned 0-100km (0-61mph) run as well as stock vs tuned fuel mileage on a short run.
Fantastic video! I am in the market for a second vehicle and TDI is high on the list. This will be the third time in the market with intentions on trying to find a TDI, hopefully this third time works out.
Best of luck!
Did you get one? I was trying for years to get the right common rail after previously owning a mk4 jetta diesel. Ended up with a passat TDI
@@DarkAttack14 Not yet. Sister came to visit so I took an unpaid week off to visit with her and travel around and then wife needed a surgery. After this, I switched jobs. We do need a second vehicle by summer this year but we're well on the way to having the cash for either a new(er) car as a family or I will start looking for a TDI/Element/Wrangler/New Edge Mustang. Thos are on my list right now.
@@27Zangle I feel that, I was originally going to get a motorcycle until my mk4 jetta diesel bit the dust.. That was years ago and I still haven't caught up! It took me so long to find the right passat. Good luck I hope you find something worthwhile soon!
How much hp and torque. Did you add or remove parts
Supposed to be 50 or 55 hp, requires a “high flow” downpipe
Awesome breakdown on the payback mileage. Really interesting.
It’s something to consider since most people buy these for the longevity and mileage. Fuel prices dropped significantly after I did this but they’re starting to creep back up again.
Great video, how is the diesel fume smell in car and outside of car while car is running?
Only time you smell it inside is in a drive thru with the wind going the wrong way. Outside it can be a bit more aggressive then the older TDI’s
Cool! Great video.
Freedom units 😆
👍
I did the apr ecu & tcu tune a week ago and its nicer to drive but I wish it was a bit faster. Stock it was 10.5 sec 0-60 and 9.7 sec with the tune. The traction control kicked in a lot more after the tune so it's probably 1 sec faster 0-60
I hear the tcu tune makes a big difference in drive ability though ?
What sensors did you install back into your new exhaust…. I have the same tune and he said I wouldn’t need sensors but car won’t go over 3k rpm
O2 sensor is the only one, any codes present?
A summery at beginning would be helpful, thank you.
Great video with the data!
With the stage 2 mrtune do you have the different tune in sports mode or it just changes the shift points
To get the 2 different tunes in sport vs drive you need dsg tune as well. This one just got stage 2 tune no dsg
Cjaa is faster?
Coming back to a 2015 passat tdi after selling my original to VW during dieselgate. Put on 200,000 on a wk2 ecodiesel and trying to wind it back a little and get a passat as a daily driver. I havent done a tune on these before. Mr tuner site is a little confusing. Do you have all of the emissions crap up north that we do in the states? Can you go to a stage 2 without any physical mods (is that what you did)? Looking more to jack up fuel economy than power but would take both and trying to figure out the best option to go with?
It doesn’t help it’s originally a French website as well. EOC Performance parts sells the kit as well and is a little more friendly website to use. We have all the same stuff up here, they offer an “intact” tune or the “light weight” tune with physical modifications. I did the second option as it had a nox sensor failure and def temperature sensor failure resulting in no start.
Both Malone and MR Tuning offer both versions whereas Kerma only offers intact tuning. If your in a county/state that is lenient on testing I would get a Malone or Mr tuning intact tune and upgrade to the off-road file down the road if you have issues.
Question for you. On the mrtuning website it states that for stage 2 they recommend running a 3" exhaust line from the turbo-back. Are they talking about an actual turbo back delete kit and exhaust system or something else? And if so, did you do an exhaust kit and what are you running with the tune
Yes if you email them they have a kit, 2.5” stainless turbo back to stock muffler along with the tuning and powergate (was about $1400).
I believe they also do tuning to keep the “factory downpipe”.
Josh, can you tell me how to plug in the Bosch 4 bar map sensor into my factory 2014 Passat wiring harness. I bought the one that every Diesel shop in Canada says that fits this. But my wiring harness will not plug into it. Any advice would be great . Didn’t know if you knew of an adapter or something like that . They’re both four pin. But one is spaced out for other than the other. Then I had to buy the pipe to bolt the one down where the other one was in the plastic tube. thanks my friend. Love your videos.
What’s the part numbers? I know the 4 sensors I have here for mk4 are D shaped plug and larger whereas the ckra is small and circular.
Do you recommend the DSG tune with the MR Tuning Stage 2 or is it okay to run it without it? Also when i buy the power gate 4 and tune does he send the tune through email immediately or do i have to send them info from my stock car? Thanks!
According to MR Tuning its fine without DSG tuning, i did notice it seemed to stay in high gears longer resulting in flywheel shudder. He will send the powergate which required you to read your stock ecu, although since this video he now has an "insta-tune" where itll send the file back in a half hour or so. Either way flash the file on first before removing any components
I have the data uploaded to the tune now how do I send it back to him to modify it?
He now has an instant tune program, if you look at the bottom of the tune page there should be some links to 1) download the powergate software to pull the tune off of it, and then login in and send it to him
I have been talking to you on here about my 2012 Passat. My question is after removing the DPF and the EGR do I need to block anything off with blocker plates and will it run fine without doing any tuning since its supposed to dose with def fluid?
No. It will go into limp mode.
On the Passats, the 1.8 TSI makes the TDI obsolete. The 1.8t gets the same fuel economy, less maintenance, and has much more power. My best friend has a 2014 Passat 1.8t and he gets 5.7l/100km on the highway. Sometimes he gets into the 4's.
I’d agree on power, fuel mileage they easily get low 5’s or high 4’s no matter how you drive. I don’t think you’ll find many 1.8 TSI’s make it to the 500k mark though
@@JoshsJettas Definitely agree. His 2014 Passat has gone through an engine because it was misfiring and had low compression when he got it for a deal. The previous owner did terrible maintenance to it and I believe the oil pickup was clogged with sludge and low oil pressure destroyed it inside. It made it to 280,000kms though. But yes the 2.0L TDI will outlast it 5 times over, especially if that TDI is deleted. I just deleted my 3.0L TDI Touareg today and am so relieved I don't have to deal with stupid emissions BS anymore.
Yeah but it's not a diesel so.. No lol
Tsi fuel economy is nowhere near the tdi but okay bud
@@Papertowels68 as a current owner of both, yep the tdi still beats it but not by much. The 1.4T and 1.5 and 1.8t(which I own now) and my 2.0L TDI Jetta are within 0.3l/100km of each other during normal commuting. With the added price of DEF, more expensive servicing, and higher diesel prices etc. the TSI is cheaper to own and purchase up front by a good bit.
Hi im have a question I'm have engine cjaa 2014 jetta. And im buy a 2013 passat engine ckra. The block and the head is the same?
Head is definitely different, you might be able to mix and match the bottom end components though
@@JoshsJettas thanks.
The block is the same right?
Hey, I have a question.
I have absolutely the same Passat with 200k mileage in Canada, but my average consumption is around 9l/100 km, I drive it mostly in the city and my average speed is 21 km/hour, is that ok and if not what can be a problem and what I have to check or fix? Thank you!
Another question about EGR, should I delete it or not? Thank you!
The city is killer on the mileage, especially in winter. I live in a very rural area and its usually around 5-6l/100km. I'd imagine thats alot of stop and go traffic? I'd personally get an emissions intact tune from MR tuning or Malone, the egr will help with warm up times.
Is this with the DSG tune??? What about adding an proformance intake?
No dsg tune, MR tuning can run stage 2 without it
@@JoshsJettas thanks! I just bought a 2011 Jetta Sportwagen. It's at 72k and I want to do this project no matter what other people say. This is my first car I have ever bought and I am 28. Basically letting my 2001 Silverado 6.0 a break to rebuild her. ( Truck I have driven since highschool. 300k same everything.) I want to say from a creator myself that your videos and knowledge are fantastic. ( We do Travel not automotive.) The transparency is the best part! Keep Vdubing!!!
Did you do a straight pipe on the exhaust and whos pips did you get a rawtek.
Nope still had a muffler and flowdirekt, Profi diesel is another option
hey man just wondering why you went with a MR tune as opposed to say Stevenson or Malone. thanks !!
Price point to be honest, he had a tune/flasher and pipe combo for $1400 Canadian when I did this, I don’t think you can even get just the piping from rawtek for that. Malone tuning and home made piping was on my mind as well, I’d stay far away from Stevenson personally.
@@JoshsJettas how long did it take to receive your bundle? Still waiting on a tracking number. Paid 2 days ago.
@@carguycam_7928 I can’t remember for sure but it was a week or two I think, not sure if I even got a tracking number. There was a bit of a mis communication as I gave them a P.O. Box which the downpipe couldn’t be shipped to so that came later.
@@JoshsJettas I'm running Stevenson because they were the only company advertising emissions passing delete tunes that I've ever found, I keep seeing people say stay away from them and I'm just curious why! I've personally loved the tune on my passat so far, just the slightest smoke on full throttle that clears up with boost and it seems pretty smooth across the powerband. There's gotta be a reason people say avoid it tho
@@DarkAttack14 MR Tuning will pass as well. I have no experience with his tunes personally but have seen people report lower fuel mileage and turbo issues. That being said Passat turbos aren’t known to be robust in the first place.
Does mr tuner make a dsg tune
I believe so, best to email him through his website mrtuning.ca
Thank you for making this video.
Josh's buddy, having problems my car 2014 volkswagen passat tdi, if I bring it ur place ?. Can you quick look it or scan it, please let's me know.
Go get a $20 OBD scanner..
How is the tune as far as smokiness?
As visibly clean as stock
Did this tune also come with a DSG transmission tune?
No you can run their stage 2 without a dsg tune, although they do offer a dsg tune through the same powergate so that’s an option as well.
Are the transmissions reliable on these?
The 06+ dsg are pretty solid, just need to make sure you do the service every 40k miles. They do have a dual mass flywheel that likes to separate though.
@@JoshsJettas thanks for the response. Much appreciated.
$8.89 a gallon for diesel? Wow!
Here in Ohio it is currently $3.90. I guess I need to stop complaining eh?
I filled up just by the outer-belt of Columbus for 3.35, but it’s around 3.70 in southern Ohio
@@South_Of_Sanity Dayton, Ohio found at Speedway today for $3.80. They all have each other’s numbers here. It’s a damn conspiracy! 😂
That was an all-time high, we’re back down to 5.50 a gallon which up until the last few year would traditionally still be considered high.
@@JoshsJettas Good video! Thanks for the update👍 my son bought his first car. It’s a 2014 Passat TDI SEL. He loves it and now is talking about doing a tune on it. He’s got me thinking about gettin one for myself😂
So...I did a tune to mine after I sent my dpf for repair...I had a charger hooked up to it however I realized after it wasn't on but was plugged in. The tune seemed to go in uninterrupted but now won't start. It acts like my battery is dead. Said a stabilizer fault. Did I "brick" my ecm?
Clean the car first...
