Lovely phalanopsis I do prefer to repot right away also sometimes the buds do make it in my environment. Your lacca set up seems to work very well for you thanks for sharing
I think you're right in that nurseries can get away with the tight moss because they don't water very often. I don't think I've ever seen soaking wet moss at a nursery.
The fact that you get orchids in these tight sleeves packed with moss and they have *really* good roots says alot! If they were watered like how we (or I at least) water they'd probably all be dead.... I've never actually visited a nursery, would love to one day to see how they manage the set up!
@@o_o8203 The tricky part is we only have one nursery in the UK and they mainly sell cool growing orchids and dendrobiums... Maybe I'll get to do a trip to a European nursery one day 😁
So, I work (well, more like “help”) at a private small orchid nursery in USA. The owner does prefer sphagnum moss also. I can’t say for all the nurseries but for her greenhouse, rather you would be shocked how wet she would like me to water but also how dry she would leave all the orchids till next watering, and yet, her personal collections has no problems blooming! 🤔 but anyway, you have all the right to be upset about your reviews... Not all the experience should be positive and happy plants, you know? Then, it should be their job to respond to you and keep you (as in customers) happy! So my friend/boss at the nursery, she wants nothing but providing happiness to the customers... Even thought this video doesn’t really do much for me since I m in USA but I like the fact that not all the reviews should be happy one. But I know you would bring back those plants to happier states.
you probably dont care but if you're stoned like me during the covid times you can stream all the latest series on Instaflixxer. I've been watching with my girlfriend for the last couple of months :)
I am sure that when nurseries water their plants, the PH is not so low, balancing out the degrading moss PH. Not saying I’m a fan when I received my summer blooming phals, but I think the water PH cancels out what’s going on in the pot
Hi, I completely agree with what you're saying, otherwise surely the phals wouldn't be thriving as the moss was definitely past it's best! I don't have a problem with the nurseries keeping them like this, it works for them 😄 when I'm getting to the time when repttoing is needed I also buffer my pH up as the moss starts to acidify to control this, so it definitely works. Just for phals I prefer to use inorganic media in my environment 😄
The Orchid Room fully agree 😃 was pleasantly surprised to see your set up resembles mine in so many ways... with the exception that my dining room turns into my grow room in winter when they all come back inside. Only ‘chids to get fed in the dining room are my orchids 😅
Just done the same with a Phal Sweet Memory just arrived. Trying semi hydro with Lecca for the first time. Do you just top up the reservoir weekly? How do you ‘flush’ ? Hope you don’t mind me picking your brains!
No of course not! I hope your sweet memory does well! I just top the reservoir up weekly and then if I notice the start of any white salt deposits on top of the LECA I either flush the top with my pump sprayer, or take to the sink and flush through with a heavy stream of warm water from the tap until the salts have gone. I don't tend to find I get much build up while the plant is growing and using all the fertiliser, but if it's not doing much then you may get that build up starting to appear, luckily you can actually see it with LECA! 😄
I dont understand how they grow in moss like that either. They dont last a week in my environment. If its moss like that I have to repot straight away!
It wasn't working for me semi hydro, put them all back in bark. I live in the Netherlands and in winter they all begin to rot. Now they are doing fine, lost a few of them.
That's a shame! Clay media will keep the root zone cooler than the ambient temp, so if it only happened in winter it could be the colder temperatures around the root zone coupled with the moist environment? I keep mine above 18C in winter and if they look like theyre struggling in any way they go onto a heat mat, which always speeds up new growth 😀 Mine have been in SH for several years and it works well for me, but I've heard others say as you do it doesn't work in their environment. I'm glad yours are doing better in bark now!
@@TheOrchidRoom I've just watch the video of miss orchid girl and i think she is also switching back to bark, why is the reason of this, she is living in a warm inviroment.
@@marjandijkkamp5243 there can be many reasons, I was just curious as to the reason it didn't work for you. I saw a video recently where I believe missorchidgirl said she found pHing the LECA alot of hassle and was switching back to organic media for this reason as organic has a naturally acidic pH. I did a video on Semi hydro with LECA recently where I showed my LECA doesn't affect pH too much, and I pH down anyway and don't find this to be hassle at all... different leca affects pH to different extents. I can't comment for MOG, only what she has said recently in the video I saw 😄. There are probably a number of contributing reasons for the switch back, but SH with LECA has worked very well for me for several years for some types of orchids😄. But I discuss the limitations in my SH video 😄 If you go to the original source of SH with orchids, Ray Barkalow and his forum, you will find many people using SH successfully for many years. Hi, yes I grow many phals in constantly wet systems and they do very well. The thing I can't understand about these very tightly packed sleeves is the lack of airflow when sphagnum is compacted. I didn't say it was bad, I said it didn't work for me.
Hi, you can see one from this order in my what's in bloom video for this month : ua-cam.com/video/LjEGcjwPG7g/v-deo.html .Fragrance will depend on the parentage of each, the name Zheng Min seems to be the originator who produces a diverse range of crosses, some more fragrant than others.
With phals I've never experienced this, all the root tips have just kept growing 😄 Since they were already adjusted to very tightly packed sphagnum, which was staying very wet, I think the change wasn't enough to cause root loss. None of the buds have blasted yet either 😄
