Clifton Rainey Insane how good he was. That play with him and John Taylor made me emotional how Jerry Rice is the best there ever will be and the hardest working man in show bizz/WORK.
Nice spot, JR sped in front of Taylor, blocked for 70 yards at full speed, then threw his body into the legs of the pursuer. This film should be shown in college football locker rooms.
I know you got to draw in the younger audience by name checking Montana but this is better known to those in the know as the John Taylor game as he had 11 catches for 286 yards and two touchdowns.
I remember watching this as a kid, John Taylor never got the attention he deserved but in this game he sure as hell did. Them Jerry Rice blocks too! Helluva combo Montana was graced with.
J. T. was great just happened to be on a team with one of the greatest Football players to ever lace them up Jerry Rice . Love how on the first 90+ reception John weaved in and out following his blocking with Taylor's signature spike between his legs .
One of my favorite memories of all time was watching this game live. Montana will always be the best of all time. Not a fan of the crowd noise, but thank you for posting!!
Agreed...Sorry but don't compare Pretty Boy Shady Brady to the Legend and to me Still the Best QB Ever to take a Snap..4-0 Along with Terry Bradshaw same 4-0 Is Probably #2. Well when you have the Greatest Runjing Back in Crsig and Wide Recievers in Rice/Taylor and of Course one of the all time Best Centers on Randy Cross...Well You Don't Lose Superbowls Period..To Me the '85/'89/'89 Niners Team was the Best..They were Great in every Area and had it All🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈👏👏👏
One of the best games ever! Some people called it the John Taylor Memorial 10k Run. Rams were playing great and Montana was intercepted twice. Somehow they had Rice well covered but John Taylor had the night of his life. I was in a Bay Area sports bar and never heard a louder noise than when JT made that second 90+ yard run!
Ah, the good ol' days of the 49ers, Rams, Falcons and Saints in the NFC West. I know the current division of 49ers, Rams, Seahawks and Cardinals is more geographically accurate, but it just doesn't feel the same anymore.
@@connormccann4860 Yes I remember that too. The Panthers joined the NFC West in '95 as an expansion team. They did pretty well in their first season as I recall, 7-9. Anyway I only mentioned the four teams as that is the division Joe Montana would have been familiar with at the time. He never met the Panthers, even with his brief stay in Kansas City.
Tubeite yeah, Montana might have played them had he stuck around for just one more year but it would have depended on the weird schedule system they had back then
Just look @ those beautiful LA Rams uniforms. I remember watching this game like it was yesterday, total heartbreaker for me....actually I'm still not over it!!
For an insanely classic Montana 4th quarter comeback, do you have Niners at Philly from earlier this season? Through three quarters, Veteran's Stadium was a madhouse. By the time Montana was through in the 4th, it sounded like a graveyard.
I made that request too, so I second your motion. I did not catch that one live, and I have NEVER seen a replay or video of it. Hopefully someday before I die . . .
I remember this amazing game like it was yesterday. On of Montana's great comeback's and also a career night for John Taylor with a 92 and a 95 yard touchdown catches. Also two interceptions for Montana (although one was a tipped pass), rather high for him, but notably on booth plays he stopped the interceptor with a "take out his legs" tackle and pushing him out of bounds. Just a great, great game. Sure miss that 49er team.
I was a huge 49ers fan during the 80s and 90s...hope they get back to consistently winning. I also loved the Rams classic blue and gold uniforms. Their new uniforms are ridiculous.
Doesn't matter , guys not human , Falcon SB sealed his place in history , incredible comeback , just the way it is , sorry . Joe is no longer the best and I'm in very good company
@@spirg Montana is UNDEFEATED in his Super bowls. He has no idea what losing a SB feels like. If he wants to know, he should ask Tom " I barely won my super bowls" Brady. Pats never won by more than a field goal. Joe is the GOAT!
I was a young man fan without a team in '89, but after watching THIS game with my Dad and Uncle (big niner fans from their dad and uncles) I was then and forever a 49er fan for life.
Thank you NFL throwback we're bringing some really good memorial games I am a 49er diehard fan and a huge fan of the NFL in general. But watching these games life was it my favorite part the reasons why I keep some games in memory my heart not because of the game or how good it was was because the time I spent with my family. My brothers and my cousins watching games like this together with our uncle that's the main reason why am football fan now that we are grilling up in the NFL it's self is a different game plus with the politics involved now. And with social media it's really a different experience from back in the day until now. I remember every Sunday morning or Monday night we go over to my cousins house and we stay up and watch the entire game because we know later we can't re-watch it because at the time and it wasn't so big and you didn't have iPhones so watching the game live meant something back then watching with your friends or your family was really huge because if you lost with the heart breaking game your family and your friends are with you take care of the paint and when you have great games especially in the playoffs what better way to celebrate with your fellow fans or better your family and your friends. No you don't have to watch a game you can just keep it updated and the way the NFL is now yes I do you love NFL but not as much if I miss a game like just record it and that's it especially when the politics again involved and I just turn off automatically I am not saying politics is not Important. It is very important and we should take it very seriously that's why we deal with it almost every single day and that's why we need a break from me the average three hours a week for 6 to 9 months well I'll depends if your team does the playoffs I really do miss watching it with my brothersAnd my cousins are bonded was so strong back because we couldn't wait until we see each other the following Sunday so thank you again Ana for throwback for taking us back in time just for a few minutes thank you so much
This game proves what I always knew about John Taylor: he was a genuine superstar. I have no doubt he would have been the number one receiver and first ballot HOFer had he played on any other team during the era he played. That he had to share catching the ball (and the limelight) with not just any receiver but the GOAT himself, is the reason why my nickname for #82 was "The Shadow".
I was at this game. Probably THE most painful loss I've experienced as a lifelong die-hard Rams fan, including Super Bowl losses. After Montana's first INT, I thought the rout was on.
So many hits that would be illegal today. Lott wrapping up around the head, defensive backs diving on a downed receiver on the ground, late high hits, etc... amazing how much has changed in that regard.
This is way it was ALWAYS played...and should still always be played. Not this " oooo you can't touch the quarterback...HELL you can't even BREATHE on the quarterback!"
Sorry for those who missed watching Montana live. I watched him since 1980 until he retired with four superbowl ring. Never lost one. His greatest comeback was in SB 20, against Bengals. Took the 49ers from the 6th yard to TD in about two minutes when the game time ran out. They were behind by 3 & won by 4.
I was at this game. One of John Taylor's long TDs came straight toward my end zone seat. I remember thinking the Niners were really having a mulligan of a game, but then Joe rallied the troops to come back.
Remember this game well. It was like John Taylor was a track meet. Niners such a fun team to watch growing up in the Bay Area. Montana, Rice, Taylor, Lott...and all the rest. Now I barely care about football or sports in general but watching this takes me back to those good times.
I remember this game. A good friend of mine was a huge Rams fan and he was going bananas the whole game until those back to back turnovers. Then he cried again during the NFC championship game. I'm still amazed at John Taylor's performance. Also digging the Tecmo Bowl crowd noise sound effects!!!
I saw that game at the Peppermill Restaurant and Lounge with my buddies in Santa Clara. I was a Rams fan back then as I was a new Bay Area resident from SoCal. Now I'm a Niners fan. Slowly became a Niner fan when the Rams moved to St. Louis. Good to see the Niners are doing good again.
Did Rice's name get called at all before or after out that other than for that SPECTACULAR block? They kept him shutdown, ultimately paving the for Taylor's night
Thanks! I was at this game and remember JT going wild. Somehow a planned trip to the game from SF got cancelled so the tickets were sold by the travel agency I believe in San Bruno. This meant that 95% of the section we were in was all 49er fans. Awesome experience.
I remember going to the supermarket with my dad after the game and shaking my head and saying "I can't believe we just saw that" over and over. The Rams uniforms looked good when they had sleeves.
9:10 brought back memories of how outraged I was that Griffin got a PI on that play. I'm still like WTF? Anderson fell on his own! haha Great game though
I remember watching this game at my brother's house. I was standing right in front of the TV and I said, all we need now is for the Rams to fumble the ball after the kick off and BAMM that's what they did.
Oh Yeah the game that John Taylor had the 2 90+ Yd touchdowns sweet memories. When the NFL Bamboozled us ( Baltimore Colts ) I think the whole City became 49'r fan's I remember my 1st yr watching them struggle with OJ in the backfield 2-14 but they stole my Heart the only other team as bad as the Colts. Watching them build that Dynasty was a work of Art. Best Dynasty Ever.
I sure do remember that game. The Rams were my team, and I thought we had finally beaten our rival 49ers. Then John Taylor's long runs after catch broke my heart.
Remember watching this game on Monday night football on ABC back when Rams still in L.A.(Anaheim,CA.).John Taylor had a big night & a great S.F.49ERS come back behind victory,,📺😎🏈🎬🎞️🎥📽️🏆
I remember this game like it was yesterday. I was 13 and had just started being allowed to stay up and watch MNF. The Rams had beaten the 49ers earlier in the year and had a chance for a rare season sweep of the 49ers in that era. Joe Montana and John Taylor put an end to that wishful thinking with those two amazing 90+ yard TD receptions. The thing I remember as much as those TD’s was Jerry Rice’s blocking down the field on both plays! This 49er’s team was awesome however, they had no business winning this particular game. Outside of a few plays, the Ram’s totally dominated them for the majority of this game. You could never underestimate the Rams ability to snatch defeat from victory in the Jim Everett era.
I was a season ticket holder when the Rams were in Anaheim and I was at this game and games like this and there were too many during the 49ers/Montana dynasty made SB56 so satisfying.
One of the reasons Rice was great is because defenses had to respect Taylor on the other side. I’m a Niner fan. Watching them every week you would know how important Taylor was to their offense.
I remember this, "staying up late" to see it. Looks now almost like a scabby (fluke) win, with the killer Rams turnovers, though I was rooting for 49ers. And the soundtrack to this video, with false cheers the whole time, reminds me of "4th and Inches", a Commodore 64 game I used to play at around the same age/time period. Couldn't do that now, even I wanted to, due to obsolete equipment etc. Still remember it, though. I also remember the sound of Al Michaels, Dan Dierdorf & Frank Gifford commentaries.
Notable plays (in my opinion) 0:28 - Greg Bell 3 yard run 1:08 - Damone Johnson 4 yd TD pass from Jim Everett 1:28 - LeRoy Irvin intercepts Joe Montana 1:50- Mike Lansford 25 yard FG 2:25 - Mike Cofer 19 yard FG 2:50 - Alvin Wright sacks Montana 3:40 - Rams fake field goal attempt falls short 3:57 - John Taylor 92 yard TD pass from Joe Montana 5:41 - Kevin Greene sacks Montana 5:49 - Mike Cofer's field goal goes wide left 6:20 - Buford McGee 13 yard TD pass from Jim Everett 7:48 - Joe Montana throws 2nd INT to Michael Stewart 8:22 - Mike Lansford 22 yard field goal 8:45 - Mike Wilson 7 yard TD pass from Joe Montana 9:34 - Jim Everett fumbles snap, 49ers recover 9:48 - John Taylor 95 yard TD pass from Joe Montana 10:26 - Cofer misses extra point 10:37 - Ron Brown fumbles on kickoff, 49ers recover 11:19 - Roger Craig 1 yard rush 11:28 - Pierce Holt sacks Everett on 3rd down
Don't care who you are. Joe Montana is the Goat.. 450+yards In passing. Best era of football ever. When you played against that 49ers then and you see#42 warming up you know already youse getting banged up hard..
This was as much about the Rams choking it away as it was about the 49ers comeback. Even though they lost it shows you the Rams were a pretty great team from that era as well.
If old Hank Williams Jr could go back and do the intro song for this one again it might go something like this: It's a Monday night match up that just can't miss! Two prime time quarterbacks with Joe and Chris! And if the Rams fail to win then you can bet I'll say "Chris" again! So you better get ready and hold on tight! Cause all my rowdy friends are coming over tonight!
bro, if brady had a game like this people would be calling him lucky. montana has this game and its ovations for his greatness. two short passes gone 80 yards, everrett fumbled the exchange, a kickoff return fumble, and everett taking a bad sack and coming through in the clutch.
People forget how good John Taylor was, and how important he was to the Niners' success back then. He played next to Rice, and never sought out the spotlight. After retiring I think he went back to his hometown and coached high school football. Pretty amazing. The two long TDs here showed speed, strength, the ability to make cuts and to not outrun blockers. There have been a number of notable wide receiver pairs in NFL history (Swan/Stallworth, the Two Marks, Branch/Biletnikoff, even Solomon/Clark for the 49ers a few years earlier), but Rice/Taylor may be the best of all. Add in John Frank, Roger Craig, Tom Rathman, Montana, and a really good offensive line, and defenses had a lot to deal with.
I had forgotten that the rams were such a good team…. I particularly remember Erick Dickerson. He had a distinctive style when he ran… that made him seem like he was beyond human
Welllll ...how yawll doing? It's you ole buddy Buckk ...Buck Montana ...glad to see my ole buddy cousin Joe Montana, is doing good things with the football ...yah ...yah 🏈🏈🏈
That was a classic SF - LA rivalry. Everyone fought like hell in that game: Montana, Brent Jones, Roger Craig, JR, Lott, ... But JT! That was the night JT#82 put the team on his back. And he showed why he's the dangerous pro-bowl kick-returner. So many times Niners lucked out on their third round picks: John Taylor, Terrell Owens, NaVorro Bowman, Guy Macintyre, Bill Romanowski, Bob St.Clair, Joe Montana.
I was in 8th grade and walked home from my gf's house pissed off at 27-10, watched the rest at home, and even at a young age knew i was watching one of the Greatest (if not the greatest) team to ever play.
@@отпирайте No, that was expected. At that point, no way were they going to be stopped. But during the season, at home, Monday night, up 17-0, lead for the first 55 minutes, there was a lot of hope.
People forget about old JT but he was awesome. He also holds the NFL record for longest punt return 95 yarda. I was at the Monday night game against Washington, sitting in the opposite end zone. As he was fielding the punt I was yelling NO!NO! NO! because in was on his own 5 I went from that to GO! GO! GO! My buddy gives me shit about it to this day...What a great memory...That's why we watch sports! For the memories!!

NFL Throwback hah bruh
The crowd sounds fake. Is it?
Super fake crowd noise. Did you not have the play by play or its bc of copyright issues?
i"m curious as to why you don't have the PBP? 4-5 years ahead of you, but yeah, same sentiment.
Same here I was 14 and will never forget this game.
John Taylor is really underrated. And it was nice to see Mike Wilson score a TD too.
Look at the #1 wide receiver on the team blocking all the way down the field. That’s another reason why #80 is the GOAT!!
He’s the definition of what a hard worker is.
Jerry Rice is a great blocker 💯💯💯

John Taylor is my favorite receiver of all 49ers receivers . He was a beast .2 number 1 receiver's with rice scary good team
JT's career best game right here. A 92 and a 95 yard TD in one game.
John Taylor very under appreciated
I was born while this happened...just found that out
I was a season ticket holder when the Rams were in Anaheim and I was at this game and games like this and there were too many during the 49ers/Montana dynasty made SB56 so satisfying.
This game looked fixed to me....All of a sudden the Rams would not tackle and fumble the ball around.
One of the reasons Rice was great is because defenses had to respect Taylor on the other side. I’m a Niner fan. Watching them every week you would know how important Taylor was to their offense.
Still remember this game as a Rams Fan I’m still sick from it! 🤣
it's so weird watching game w/out a caster.
I’ll never forget this game. John Taylor was in the zone that night.
1989 49ers vs Ramsgame 1: Rams 13-12game 2: 49ers 30-27Playoffs: 49ers 30, Rams 3. The hell? Guess the Rams weren't ready for Primetime.
Notable plays (in my opinion)
0:28 - Greg Bell 3 yard run
1:08 - Damone Johnson 4 yd TD pass from Jim Everett
1:28 - LeRoy Irvin intercepts Joe Montana
1:50- Mike Lansford 25 yard FG
2:25 - Mike Cofer 19 yard FG
2:50 - Alvin Wright sacks Montana
3:40 - Rams fake field goal attempt falls short
3:57 - John Taylor 92 yard TD pass from Joe Montana
5:41 - Kevin Greene sacks Montana
5:49 - Mike Cofer's field goal goes wide left
6:20 - Buford McGee 13 yard TD pass from Jim Everett
7:48 - Joe Montana throws 2nd INT to Michael Stewart
8:22 - Mike Lansford 22 yard field goal
8:45 - Mike Wilson 7 yard TD pass from Joe Montana
9:34 - Jim Everett fumbles snap, 49ers recover
9:48 - John Taylor 95 yard TD pass from Joe Montana
10:26 - Cofer misses extra point
10:37 - Ron Brown fumbles on kickoff, 49ers recover
11:19 - Roger Craig 1 yard rush
11:28 - Pierce Holt sacks Everett on 3rd down
ok, but what? why? Any context?
Don't care who you are. Joe Montana is the Goat.. 450+yards In passing. Best era of football ever. When you played against that 49ers then and you see#42 warming up you know already youse getting banged up hard..
This year's week 18 game reminded me of this game.
Legendary
Damn! John Taylor had a night for the ages. Also, props to Jerry Rice for his great down field blocking.
Remember this game like it was yesterday. Screaming at like midnight.
I saw this live! Unbelievable game!
This was as much about the Rams choking it away as it was about the 49ers comeback. Even though they lost it shows you the Rams were a pretty great team from that era as well.
9:27 A lot has changed NE Patriots not in playoff hunt but most the AFC still in it. 49ers traded places with Patriots hurts to say as a 49er fan lol.
Screw the Patriots
These guys knew they were going to get hit back then look at how much more padding than today's game. Just love this era. 85 to 2005
If old Hank Williams Jr could go back and do the intro song for this one again it might go something like this:
It's a Monday night match up that just can't miss!
Two prime time quarterbacks with Joe and Chris!
And if the Rams fail to win
then you can bet I'll say "Chris" again!
So you better get ready and hold on tight!
Cause all my rowdy friends are coming over tonight!
Love this..
I spoke with John Taylor the very next day as he went bowling in San Mateo. Too cool.
I used to love Rams vs. Niners in the 80s and early 90s.
yeah those late 80's rams teams were no joke.
bro, if brady had a game like this people would be calling him lucky. montana has this game and its ovations for his greatness. two short passes gone 80 yards, everrett fumbled the exchange, a kickoff return fumble, and everett taking a bad sack and coming through in the clutch.
I was at that game. Heartbreaking loss for the Rams. Made me ill all over again watching the highlights.
First game I ever cried about after.. Can’t believe this is on UA-cam and I didn’t even search for it. I remember everything about that night!
The game that broke my heart!!! And PISSED ME OFF!!!!
Taylor was maybe the best #2 wideout of all-time. He was unbelievable that night. A great receiver!
Still remember this game like it was yesterday. Still pisses me off almost 30 years later.
sub4ra you should be pissed off that rams got raped by niners in the championship
@@отпирайте No, that was expected. At that point, no way were they going to be stopped. But during the season, at home, Monday night, up 17-0, lead for the first 55 minutes, there was a lot of hope.
What an Awesome game!👏👏👏
People forget about old JT but he was awesome. He also holds the NFL record for longest punt return 95 yarda. I was at the Monday night game against Washington, sitting in the opposite end zone. As he was fielding the punt I was yelling NO!NO! NO! because in was on his own 5 I went from that to GO! GO! GO! My buddy gives me shit about it to this day...What a great memory...That's why we watch sports! For the memories!!
Montana made a nice tackle after the int.😂
Great blocking from Rice on both Taylors long touchdowns.
What a game!
