      Hi, glad you liked it & you're welcome 👍 Yep I like window seats, it seems that 'back in the day' they appreciated these deep window bays too because there's quite often window seats in them & I'm always drawn to them 🧐👍 Best of luck with your build, I'm sure the Scotch will help 😁👍

    Great workmanship mate, I’m a joiner and work for a firm. I get a lot of people asking for work to be done but tbh I struggle with pricing jobs up as things never are straight forward and time is hard to estimate . any tips please ?? You’ve got your self a new subscriber ✅

    • @Gidjoiner

      Hi Danny, No it's not easy, I've been a joiner 36yrs, working for myself 20yrs but i still can't work it out exactly, onsite there's people cleaning up or labourers just doing other stuff, there's a gaffer who's responsible for the decisions n working with the other trades, none of that when your working for yourself, At first i wasn't charging enough, All my work comes word of mouth & i stick to the orig quoted price providing they don't change anything, people like to know what the final bill will be, it means i can have a cuppa whenever ii want without them looking at me thinking 'am i paying him to sit on his arse' 😂 The jobs are discussed with the clients reg all different designs & different options of materials but in the end it's their decision/choice, I have to get these jobs done within time n budget so things aren't always perfect but i don't rush a job n bodge it just to get the job done, I have a mortgage but don't have family to feed n i'm not greedy, so i work on 'can i do that for the quoted amount'? , sometimes i take on jobs where i want to build it even tho i'll prob only just make ends meet, some jobs i do ok, normally the smaller jobs that are easier to estimate time but some jobs are 'bespoke' n they're hard to estimate, The smaller jobs tho sometimes take 3 days instead of 2 for whatever reason, weather, lack of materials or i just underestimated the time it would take but as i say i stick to my price so if i have 2 jobs like this in one wk where i work Sat i only get paid for 4 days, but bigger jobs where i'm getting paid for a full 2 or 3 wks i can do alright n get the job done in time, but bigger jobs can easily over run by up to a wk n same again i'm sticking to my price so only get paid the quoted amount, Some jobs just aren't worth what it would take to make them, you might as well buy one but i do it because i want to & can make it, Swings n Roundabouts, Try this -whatever you are getting paid from the site/firm double it & give that price as a quote, prices will vary depending where you are in the country, I'm in Leeds but i know the price down south would be double my price, If you're sill working for firms & these are one-off occasional jobs you'll have to decide how much your day is worth but if you get repeated work from these people & plan on quitting the firms to work for yourself full time they'll expect a similar price next time, People know i've done this a long time, can do a good job & i'm not greedy so people wait for me, their options of other workmen isn't huge, once they've had stuff done by you n they're happy they'll keep coming back, I think a reg client base & steady work is better than trying for the money n run option but ever hearing from those people again, Sorry if this isn't too much help but don't charge too little (but don't charge too much 🤷‍♂️🙃) , you can't live off nothing, you're not a charity so start off n if it isn't enough slowly increase it, , 👍😊

      Gid Joiner thanks for taking the time to reply. Very interesting and helpful tips there. I must admit I have learnt that time is so important especially when working at weekends for mates etc and they want mates rates. In theory I think I should be charging at least time and half what I earn on an hourly rate . I do love joiner but working for peanuts 🥜 at the weekend is crazy, you need to chill out sometimes. I think people can take the pee out of trades people when they know you.
      I know Leeds great city 👍🏻. We have some friends in Case Vegas . I’m based in between Cambridge and Peterbrough. Seriously thinking of setting up on my own but joiner machinery is pretty expensive, I have a fair amount of tools , but no planner thicknesser, dimension saw, etc. Still have high mortgage payments , been doing joiner for 15 years now. Watched your video on the staircase great job!

    How much is a 18mm sheet of marine ply?

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner  5 років тому

      Sorry don't know, this is WBP Ply, slightly better quality than the off the shelf Chinese ply £33+vat.

      Hi, yep i remember mentioning I worked on the Theatre bar & one up the road that was called Pharaohs in Barnsley in the 90's 😉, Malayan ply is WBP ply, a slightly better quality than the Chinese off the shelf crap. £38+vat it says on my spreadsheet, it's a fairly new quote that but prices vary often

    the problem with your window seat is there's no through ventilation below and behind the seat.
    esp. in a bay - there will be mould and eventually rot.
    its the same for most unventilated built-ins against outside walls.

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner  4 роки тому

      Bollocks!! I was going to write Complete bollocks but if this wall had no cavity or a damp issue then yeah you'd be right, & as far as "its the same for most unventilated built-ins against outside walls." that is complete bollocks, I've been an on-site joiner for 35yrs & i rarely pull a fixture that's mouldy or rotten behind.

    Hi Gid I’m planning on building a wardrobe at home. Just want to know your recommendation on materials. I’m building a floor to ceiling double wardrobe with concealed hinges. Want just plain MDF doors. Just deciding on the carcass and weather 18mm MDF would be strong enough to support the doors and how many hinges I would need

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner  5 років тому

      Hi, I always give my customers the option between ply n MDF, 18mm, I only use Medite MR MDF, slightly denser with a better quality surface, better for me spraying & because it's moisture resistant i hope it will resistant deterioration due to the elements, humidity.. I advise to use ply for the carcass, if the surface doesn't have to be perfectly flat, some of the grain of ply will show through, then ply is more stable & you'll get a stronger fixing into it for things like drawer runners n hanging rails, the edges have to be covered in some way though,
      There's a few pics on my Facebook page showing the construction of wardrobes among other work photos
      facebook.com/gid.joiner/photos_albums

    • @robertward8330
      @robertward8330 5 років тому

      Yeah I just purchased the MR MDF. As it’s so confusing all the different types of ply. Someone recommended marine or birch ply but they’re 50-80£ a sheet!!
      Anyway thanks for the help, going to check out your Facebook profile now 👍🏻
