"When a man's got money in his pocket he begins to appreciate peace."
Fun Fact: This movie was shot in eight weeks.
Eye Of The Beholder Fact: Clint Eastwood's trademark squint was caused by the combination of the sun and high-wattage arc lamps on the set.
Contact Shenanigans Fact: Filmed between seasons 6 and 7 of Rawhide. Clint Eastwood's contract for Rawhide (1959) prohibited him from making movies in the United States while on break from the series. However, the contract did allow him to accept movie assignments in Europe.
Clever Camera Fact: Prior to this movie, in American movies, whenever a person was shot, one camera was focused on the shooter, who fired his weapon, and a split second later, the director quickly cut to the victim who could be seen being hit and falling to the ground or whatever. Clint Eastwood knew this had always been the way such scenes were shot in the States, but didn't bother to tell Sergio Leone. Leone shot the first scene involving any kind of major violence in this movie with the camera shooting from over Eastwood's shoulder, as though the viewer was right there watching.
The Rest Of The Story Fact: This movie is a remake of Yojimbo (1961), which itself was based on the as yet unadapted novel Red Harvest (1929) by Dashiell Hammett. In fact, this movie's U.S. release was delayed when Yojimbo screenwriters Akira Kurosawa and Ryûzô Kikushima sued the filmmakers for the breach of copyright. Kurosawa and Kikushima won, and as a result received 15% of this movie's worldwide gross and exclusive distribution rights for Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea. When Kurosawa released the film in Japan, he pointedly retitled it 'The Return of Yojimbo.' Kurosawa said he made more money off of this movie than he did on Yojimbo (1961).

      Hah!!
Had not reads the comments yet and just suggested he check out the original western, Seven Samurai, and then The Magnificent Seven, Seven Psychopaths, Hateful Eight and Ridiculous Six.
I think he'd love getting into Kurosawa but it's not exactly a viewer draw.
      😂😉🍻😎
      Great background info! 10/10😎🍻

@Mr Valentine. Terrific choice, I also recommend "The Searches with the great John Ford and John Wayne, as well as Clint and Morgan Freeman in Unforgiven, and I also really love the parrying of John Stewart an John Wayne in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (another john Ford classic) to name just a few of the classics in the Western genre. Love the score and this director, very iconic

If you're interested in other westerns my top picks are the following:
    Unforgiven (Clint Eastwood)
3:10 to Yuma (2007, Christian Bale)
    El Dorado (John Wayne)
El Diablo (Louis Gosset Junior, comedy western)

I recommend "Unforgiven," my favorite western, and "Open Range," a close second.

This first film in the trilogy is actually a remake of an Akira Kurosawa film "Yojimbo", but let us not forget the awesomely stylized Noir remake with Bruce Willis and Christopher Walken "Last Man Standing". A personal favorite.

With all the Westerns that I could suggest...True Grit (both versions), High Noon, The Magnificent Seven...the one I would suggest the most is probably Open Range, with Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner. It is a terrific movie, regardless of the fact that it is a Western, and it is a movie that not nearly enough people react to.
As for John Wayne movies...the ones I usually suggest are Hellfighters and Hatari...neither of which is a Western or a war movie, since many other people will suggest John Wayne Westerns and war movies. 😁

If you enjoyed this movie there is a remake starring Bruce Willis called "Last Man Standing." I don't think it's as good as this one, but it has it's charms and I recommend giving it a look.

For John Wayne I recommend that you start out with Eldorado. There are two other films that Star The Duke with almost the same plot but Eldorado is the best one.
Then I would recommend Red River for something completely different.
    Then True Grit.
Then The Quiet Man. This is one of his few non westerns.
    Then The Shootist.
There are other good films but if you watch these you will have a good idea of just how good The Duke was.

    Westerns?
    Cinema history maybe?
How about...... the first "western' ...actually an 'eastern'.. Seven Samurai 1954
by The Godfather of all directors, Akira Kurosawa
    Your favorite director's favorite director.
next...The American copy, The Magnificent Seven' One of the greatest westerns of all time.
with Seven Samurai credited as the basis during the opening credits.
next... The 7 Psychopaths with a list of top tier cast
next....The Hateful 8 by Quentin Tarantino
round it all off with Adam Sandler and The Ridiculous Six
If nothing else my cineophilic friend, look into who Kurosawa is and check out "Dreams" on your own
Not exactly a great crowd draw but required viewing for the pictorially precocious.
Fun fact with minor spoilers, Seven Samurai was the very first "get a team of pros together" movie.
    Slainté😁😉🍻

Eh? You haven't watched For A Few Dollars More?? Please do! I find that Fistful is alright for a western, but Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad And The Ugly are both true masterpieces, and my favourite of them two is constantly switching. 🤩
