Awesome video, thanks for it! I was at the store checking the H1, and searched some review where I got you! This will be my next on location way to record my audio for my tutorials! Greetings for Japan!
As a new UA-camr, I Picked up the SmartLav+ today. I love that it's compatible with the Zoom H1 if I want to go that route too. Hats off to iPhone's sound quality, it's actually not horrible and it's even reasonably good at isolating voice over ambient noise... BUT, it cannot compete with the SmartLav+ especially at an $80 investment which is reasonable for a semi-professional piece of equipment. Thanks CURTIS!
***** There's another dude who has done comparisons and they are both very close but honestly the edge went to the Smartlav+ especially outdoors if I remember correctly.
I've just recently bought a SmartLav+. In order to get it to work with the Zoom H6, I also needed the Rode SC3 cable (TRRS to TRS). Plug the Lav+ into the grey TRRS end of the SC3 cable, plug the black TRS end into the port on the side of the XY mic on the H6, and turn on Plugin Power within the "Input/Output" mic menu. Works like a charm. The XY mic doesn't work, however I wanted to use the main XLR/TRS inputs on the H6, but this doesn't work - Lav+ into SC3 into TRS 3.5mm-to-1/4" converter). I think it has something to do with inline versus phantom power. Curtis Judd Thanks for the videos, they're rather informative, well shot, great audio, and great presentation too. Subscribed.
"RODE smartLav+ and Zoom H1" by Curtis Judd. Very nice review Curtis ! One question: 2:47 quieter regarding the input-signal or the noise-floor ? best regards from cologne, andy
Thank you , i try to find many way to conect my condenser mic clip [ like yours] with the Zoom H1 and my CANON T5i. Then i just see your VDO. Useful for me and i say thank you for share. Have a good day.
Curtis, Thank you for the video. Lead me to purchase the Zoom H-1 and the rode adapter. I am using it on a non-rode lavalier mic. It works and works well. A rode microphone may be my next audio purchase, but for now your advice still did wonders. Thank You.
Hi Saiman, yes. On iOS this microphone becomes the default and records with any camera app. On Android, the app needs to be able to select the external mic, usually in the settings.
curtis your the man bro! Its nice to see someone who actually knows what they are talking about. I need a little help from one youtuber to another. Can I email you with a question?
It seems that every time I research microphones online, in the end, I get the answers I need from your videos :) Nice! One questions though (and it's a general one): Say you have a Lav mic - is it better to connect it to a recorder over a smartphone? Do recorders generally make the sound any better? Or do smartphones make the quality somehow worse?
Thanks George. It is sort of a toss-up in my experience. The thing which seems to make a bigger difference in audio quality are the microphone and where you place it.
I'm shooting tomorrow and want to buy three units of this mic tonight to use in my Zoom H6 XLR ports. If I just plug it into my Rode 3.5mm to XLR adapter, will that work? Or do I need the SC3 adapter as well? Thanks and fantastic review!
Hey Jared, no, unfortunately I don't think the smartLav+ will adapt to XLR because it uses plugin power (3-5 volts) instead of phantom power like xlr mics (48 volts in most cases). If you're recording multiple lav mics into a Zoom H6, you'll need XLR based mics. The two XLR based lavaliers I am familiar with are the Audio Technica AT899 (amzn.to/1t5UPPF) and the HMNSound Microlav (but you cannot get that quickly as it ships from Thailand). I have also heard good things about the RODE Lavalier (amzn.to/1wgcjrB). There are lots of other options but those are the XLR based lavaliers with which I have experience and own and like.
The function of the Zoom H1 and the Iphone is not only record but operate as a preamp? What is the advantage of using a preamp? What else do you recommend? You are my sound Gurú!!! Awsome!!!
Hi Jorge, Yes, they both act as a preamp and an analogue to digital converter as well. This also applies to cameras with microphone inputs (also preamp and analogue to digital converter). The advantage of using a dedicated audio recorder over a camera is that an audio recorder typically has a higher quality preamplifier and analogue to digital converter. I hope that helps!
Cool!!! The key is 2 elements that are inside the device: the preamplifier and the analog to digital converter with better quality. Excellent!!!! It would be great if you made a video showing with a same microphone with different preamp, for example, a RODE Videomic Pro mirrophone with preamplifiers like zoom h1, Saramonic Smart Rig +, Zoom H4n Pro, etc. I'll continue to watch your videos and share them with friends who shoot. Thank you very much for all the help!!!!
Awesome!!!! It will be very useful for many beginners as I understand the importance of a very good recorder as well as a very good microphone. Many Thanks my Guru Sound!!!!
I know it's an old video, but I saw someone do some extensive testing on a number of similar recorders including the H1. If I remember correctly they established that there seems to be a break point on the H1, around an input level of 42 - 41 , meaning if you set your level to 41 the noise floor is significantly lower than that set at 42. I don't recall the numbers though.
@@curtisjudd It wasn't actually and interesting that you noted someone else had said 37. Now I'm questioning my memory as to whether it was 41 was the maximum before a step rise in noise at 42.
Thanks! Here's a tutorial on how I got this look. It is a physical background and in post I do a quick adjustment to finish the look: ua-cam.com/video/cyGfd_AhofU/v-deo.html I hope that helps!
Hi Humanfactor, with the H1, there are actually a few better options. My favorite sounding, affordable lavalier mic is the Aputure A.Lav (not to be confused with the A.Lav EZ): ua-cam.com/video/tQe9YrwV1BI/v-deo.html And here's another piece where we compare 6 (some are for phones, some would work with the H1): ua-cam.com/video/CZKs1U1GA84/v-deo.html
i can’t decide if i should get this (but with zoom h1n) or get the tascam dr-10l. i really like everything about the tascam like its lock features and double recording, but this is more versatile with the zoom h1n.
hey great video! i have been watching all of your videos before i go and spend some money on buying a couple of lavaliers. i am already an audio engineer so my question to you is a shoot out: does the rhode lavalier compare equally to the rhode smartlav +? do you have a video or audio sample demonstrating the audio technica art-3350 after post production? it is a $40 difference per unit that would save me money on this start up project but if the quality is going to be sacrificed that much i know the investment will be worth it. it will be for a youtube mini series. Thank you! Again love how informative you are.
Dean Romo The RODE Lavalier is much more sensitive than the smartLav+ and is less about convenience (recording to a phone) and more about audio quality. The Lavalier has a much richer bass response. Here is a sample of the ATR-3350 after post processing: ua-cam.com/video/BDUwJ-Edd80/v-deo.html The ATR-3350 is cheaply built, definitely not in the same league as the RODE mikes. If you go that route, plan to replace them. The cables are particularly thin and long (people tend to trip on them). Thanks!
Thanks for the work. Just clarifying, I reecord direclty from a smartLav+ to my Canon camera with longer cables. What would the H1 bring extra? Just controlling the db level?
+Johnny TSC You can plug it into your phone and record the movie and mic together with the phone's built-in video cam app. Here's an example: ua-cam.com/video/Q0dRVx_BmtQ/v-deo.html
Hi Curtis, great video - I've subscribed! Quick question, I'm shooting interviews next month for a short film and am going crazy on research into getting the best sound. I have a Rode VideoMic Pro and was planning on purchasing a Zoom H1 and Lavalier to go along with it. Do you think these three items are sufficient for good quality audio on a budget? I would be grateful for any advice!
I would just use the lavalier as a backup or when moving while interviewing. Number one thing I would do is boom that VideoMic Pro over the person being interviewed: ua-cam.com/video/TUEmQBZKoBs/v-deo.html
Great explanation, Can you please tell me connect to connect ZoomH1n and Boya BY M1 lav mic to my smart phone so that I can record Audio and Video in together.
Hi Sudhir, it would probably be easier to just connect your microphone to your phone. You will just need a TRS to TRRS adapter if your microphone has a TRS connector.
Hi Curtis, Is there a huge difference in sound quality using the phone as a recorder over the H1? My H1 is broken, and I am going to grab couple Smart Lav + to do interviews. Zoom said they would replace the H1 for $55, but if the phone is just as good I will forget it.
Thanks. I have two copies of the Sanken COS-11D. It is a great sounding mic although it is a little larger than some of the newer professional level microphones on the market (larger head, larger diameter cable). Nevertheless, it is durable and sounds great.
Curtis, hi! Great video, as usual... Curtis I have to carefully use my budget and I believe that sound is too important even for small projects... so can you please tell me, can this combo be used in such a way, that a talent can walk, talk and sound to be useable? And if I invest on an expensive lavalier (like sanken cos11d) but keep the zoom for recording will the sound be better or the receiver should also be expensive (like Sennheiser etc.)? Thank you for your time.
Hi BELTENGROSGR, Yes, this combination will work for "walk and talk" scenarios. As for wireless, that is a very large topic as wireless is far more complex than a simple recorder. But from a practical point of view, yes, I use the Sennheiser EW112p G3 wireless lavalier system with good results. That being said, from an audio quality point of view, you may or may not hear a difference. But the G3 system may hold up better over time and it also has features like a locking plug so that the mic doesn't pop out of the jack during a shoot. But you can get very good results with an H1 and a lavalier. You might find this comparison useful: ua-cam.com/video/CZKs1U1GA84/v-deo.html
Thank you Curtis, you are a gentleman, your answer is a big help, I' ll go for Rode SmartLav+ and the adapter for now and hopefully later upgrade to Sennheiser.
love your reviews! i was thinking to this setup for using it on my shortfilms when booming gets difficult, do you think the sound quality? i own the sennheiser mke600
Thanks! Yes, you can get pretty decent results with the H1/smartLav+. It is a little bulky and the cable can pull out, but other than that, pretty good. Good luck!
Hey Curtis, is this smartlav+sc3 lavalier mic considered the best for the ZoomH1? Or this review was just an optional alternative? I really need to shop and buy a high quality lavalier mic for my ZoomH1. Any suggestions? Thanks
Hi Curtis, thanks for your video always top... I want to improve the sound of my videos then I using my rode smartlav+. Do you prefer? Zoom h1 or sound card? thanks.. Alberto
Hi Curtis, 2 questions.... 1. Does this lavalier compete with the more expensive Rode Lavalier ? 2. It looks like you positioned the lavalier downwards on your shirt, is there a reason why you did this? Kind regards, Michael
Hi Michael, no, this isn't really in the same league as the RODE Lavalier in my experience. That mic produces a stronger signal and sounds fuller. You have a sharp eye! Yes, I aimed it downward to reduce the amount of sibilance it captures in my voice. Sibilance is the annoying sizzling sound you get when saying the letters S or Z. My voice has a tendency to produce a lot of that. Aiming the mic downwards helps a little bit.
Hi Curtis, I purchased a J044 earlier this year through your link because of your great review. I didn't know whether it'd be more helpful to post my question here or on the 2 Mics, 1 Phone video, but here it is: Is there a way to hookup 2 lav mics such as the j044 to the zoom H1 so that I can record 2 people into the same file? Thanks!
+Evan Brand Hi Evan, good question. Yes, it should technically be possible with the right kind of adapter but all of the "splitters" I've seen out there are wired for headphones (so that two people can listen to the same output). That might work as well, but it would probably record both microphones to both channels so you wouldn't have isolated tracks (left for mic 1, right for mic 2). Does anybody out there know (short of wiring and soldering your own cable)?
That makes sense. I was thinking maybe there was something like the SR6 connector that you made the video on for 2 mics on 1 phone, but that could be plugged into the H1 instead. Thanks for your reply!
Could you do a video on the Rode smartLav+, zoom H1 vs the phone quality. And would you recommend getting a zoom H1 when on a budget. Thank You very much
The quality is about the same when comparing to an iPhone 5S and up. The Zoom H1 can be a useful option if you're shooting a wedding, for example, and you need to put a lav mic on the groom. Most people are more comfortable giving an H1 to someone to wear vs. their phone.
Thanks for the good review. I recently bought a Smartlav+ and an SC3 adaptor cable. The mic works well with my smartphone and with the computer through the adaptor cable. But with the ZoomH1+Smartlav+SC3 combo do not work...do you have any idea why not?
Hmm, no, that combination worked here. Usually when you plug in the microphone on the H1, the screen on the H1 will display a message indicating that it sees the external mic. Do you get that when you plug in the SC3?
Hi Curtis, I tried to connect the smartlav+ using the RODE SC3 to my TASCAM DR100MKii (LINE2 IN) recorder, but it doesnt work. I dont know why. Would you give me some advice please? Thanks.
Hi, I am not an english speaking guy, Plz what is your summary about that , would you recommend me to use the smartlav+ with iphone or with the zoom H1 ? I know you have explained that in the episode but I need your personal preference .. thanks and I have subscribed your channel already
Thanks for reply, in fact I have Zoom H1 right now, but I have read in some articles which review the smartlav+ and it come to an end that says this mic is designed for phones devices not for recording devices, so , my question is, what is the really best lav mic for Zoom h1 even if it is very expensive .??? Please let me know , thanks
Oh, in that case, I like the following lavalier mics: Countryman B6: ua-cam.com/video/Lh1qVoBieVI/v-deo.html Sanken COS-11D: bhpho.to/2mdJ1xG DPA 4061: bhpho.to/2piBgHW
There aren't any reviews that compare the Rode SmartLav+ with iPhone versus the Zoom H1 with a regular lav (e.g. MicJ 044). I need to record professional quality audio (for a documentary film) so the difference in price ($79 vs $130) isn't that crucial. I would greatly appreciate your expertise and recommendations - thank you!
Hi Rachel, that's a bit of a toss up in terms of the resulting audio quality. I'm not sure how many people you will need to mic, but going with the smartLav+ you could potentially add additional mics for less cost if you need to (assuming talent have iPhones you can record to). I hope that helps and best wishes on your film!
Hey Curtis, I have an H1, and I'm finding that when I bring the .wav files into FCPX the levels are quite low, even with the Zoom's levels set at 50, 60, and even 75. When I click the Auto-Enhance button in FCPX it turns on the loudness setting and puts the level quite high. In one case the loudness was set at 92%. Is that normal? Thanks for such a great channel. I really appreciate how understated you are -- too many UA-camrs talk like a late-night DJ from a classic rock station.
Hi Daniel, that is normal. I usually like to leave a bit more headroom while recording to prevent clipping. I'm not sure where your peaks are hitting, but you might be able to increase the input level a bit if they're only hitting around -20dB. I'd feel pretty comfortable increasing the input level until the peaks hit -12dB. Then in post, I loudness normalize like this: ua-cam.com/video/OKSWPrT5upo/v-deo.html
Great video, Curtis. Thank you. I recently started doing videos for my financial services practice. I have an intro lighting kit (Amazon) and shoot the video using an iPhone 6s which is ok. I own a Zoom H1 but I've actually been recording directly into the iPhone with a Giant Squid Lav. Been thinking about getting the Rode VideoMic but I'm learning that audio is as much about the device used to record the audio as it is the microphone. I plan on subscribing to your channel but I wonder if you can offer any tips on recording better quality audio if I were to keep using my iPhone for video. I have a ton of other questions but I'll leave it at that for now. Great channel!
Hi Michael, for talking head video, booming a microphone above the talent (40-60 cm from the talents mouth) is my favorite way to mic for audio quality. In the next few weeks we'll have a piece comparing three different shotgun mics from RODE, Saramonic, and Azden. I hope that helps!
+Curtis Judd Thanks for the reply. I just watched the shotgun comparison video and it helps a lot. Thanks. As a follow up, would it be appropriate for me to mic two or three people from above using the same shotgun mic? I'd like to mount it on a c-stand and I'm hoping I don't need to buy 3 mic setups. $$$
+Michael Macco Hi again Michael, that can be tough unless the three are sitting very close to each other. The shotgun microphones produce better quality because they have narrow pick-up patterns that reject most ambient noise and pick up more of the sound that they're pointed at. The trick with using one mic for 3 people is that the pickup pattern is so narrow that it won't usually pick up all three people unless you have someone moving a boom pole so that the mic is pointed at the person talking. You can move them farther away from the three people so that you can pick up all three, but then it will also pick up a lot more room noise. So it is a tradeoff. If I were filming three people sitting at a table, all on the same side of the table, and was ok with the mic showing in frame, I would use a cardioid large diaphragm condenser mic. The problem with this type of mic is that you'd need to connect it to a computer (for USB models) or to a proper audio recorder or audio interface (for XLR based models). So I suppose first job is to decide how much money you can budget to solve your audio problems, then we can look at options.
Two questions :) 1) What wave settings do you recommand using on the H1 with a smartlav+ plugged into? 2) Does normalizing the wave files create more noise than leveling it right straight a head? (The problem behind it: I have some talents, who have a big "dynamic" range of loudness. I dont want to clip, but I neither want to have a noticable noise floor. If it wouldnt differ to much, Id like to record with level 40-50 on the H1 and normalize the quite parts.) Question again, but other articulation: What creates a more noticable noisefloor: Level 80 with a quite speaker which is very close to peaking or level 40, but normalized in post? Thanks a lot in advance :)
+Fionn-Gorilla Hi Fionn: 1) I usually record with the H1 set to wav, 24-bit, 48kHz when I'm using it to record sound for video. 2) I have not issues recording with the H1 as low as 40/100, but don't go below that. At about 38, it applies digital attenuation which will still clip. 40 has produced some surprisingly clean recordings with the right microphone. Usually I don't need to go that low for the smartLav+.
Have you tried their Adaptor SC6 on an Android smartphone ? Can you listen to the sound as it is being recorded ? I have a Fiio E07K Andes DAC for the headphones. I thought I could come out of the Rode SC6 --> through my Fiio --> into my headphones. Do you think this is possible ? It would be so the sound engineer could monitor the recording .
Hi Curtis, thanks for this video. I am getting kit for a podcast which is mostly interviews. Can I use two RODE smartLav+ with my Zoom H1? I have been recommended to get ATR-3350's for this. But I already have the smart lav and they are better right?
Hi Amisha, I prefer the smartLav+ over the ATR3350. You will need some sort of splitter to get both of them into the H1. I have done that when recording two smartLavs to a phone but not to the H1 so I don't have a specific recommendation on a splitter to use. But definitely give it a try! Best wishes!
I would like to know, if you could connect the rode SC6 with the Zoom H1 and record two smartLavs(+) into the Zoom. It would be great if you could test that.
LRebelS Just tested it here: Yes, but you will also need a TRRS to TRS adapter like the RODE SC3. So you would have two smartLav+s into the RODE SC6 adapter and then the SC6 adapter into the RODE SC3 which then plugs into the Zoom H1. It's a lot of adapting but it works. I hope that helps!
Curtis, I've ordered the SmartLav+ to use with my iPhone 7 Plus (I have 3.5to Lightning adapter) but would also like to use it with an SC-3 and XLR to plug into my Tascam DR-40 recorder sometimes. If I do the latter, do I need to select mic phantom power setting to power the lav mic?
hi. you have so much great mono solutions that are portable (ie lavs) what about stereo solutions that could be connected to talent, taped or otherwise? that way you could get good stereo sound of things like doors opening, footsteps, etc. without having to go back and do it again. any thoughts? what i'd like is to put a zoom h1 in talents pocket, and have a stereo mic somewhere on them as well (perhaps on outside of body would be ok too) just out of frame. basically what small but good quality stereo mics would you recommend? thanks!
Hi Rory, I don't have experience with any stereo lavaliers yet but will definitely do an episode if we work with one in the future. Your ideas sound like they'd work great.
Hello Curtis, i am having the same issue of no sound with my new Sennheiser ME 2, which requires phantom power, with my Zoom H1. As we know, H1 has already built in Plug in Power, but apparently this is not the case in my situation, as when the lav is attached, i only can hear hiss noise but nothing else. THE QUESTION: do i need to activate Plug In Power on H1 to make the mic working, or do i need to get myself this type of extension / adapter, which you showed in the clip, to have everything working as normal? Thank you so much for your time. I love your tutorials :)
+Solveiga Serova Hi! The H1 applies plug-in power automatically so no need to change any settings. The ME2 that you have, does it have a TRS plug (two black rings)?
+Curtis Judd thank you so much Curtis for getting back in touch. Yes, ME 2 has a two-ring plug. Can you think of any solution? i have also emailed to Zoom manufacturer support services, still waiting for response. I have phoned to the audio store who delivered the mic, and they said they can't think of anything that could solve the problem, but they assured me that there is very very little possibility that the mic may be faulty, it almost never happens. And unfortunately i cannot test the mic, because i don't have any other recording device. Unless sticking it to my iMac :)
+Solveiga Serova If there's a music instrument store (Guitar Center here in the US), they often have demo recorders on hand and they may be willing to let you plug in your mic there to see if it works. Then at least you'll know whether it is your mic or the Zoom H1.
+Duarte Dellarole You'll have a little more gain to work with on an audio recorder so when working with people with quiet voices that can be helpful. It try with your phone first and then if you're not satisfied, upgrade to a recorder.
Thanks Curtis and thanks for the videos! Will probably buy this mic since the price in my country is the same as fi I order the Giant Squid Audio Lab online. The rode should be better I guess
Hi Curtis, I plan on using my Panasonic GH3 and a lavalier mic, into a Zoom H1 to make some talking real estate videos for UA-cam. Currently, I am using the newest Giant Squid lav mic. with my H1 with fair to good audio results. Do you think I will get better sound with my Zoom H1 if I invest in the Rode smartlav+ and the adapter? In other words, is it the right time now to stop using the Giant Squid lav mic. in favor of the smartlav+ with adapter?
Hi Robert, No I think the Giant Squid and Zoom H1 are nicely matched and produce good results. If someone were in the market for their first lavalier mic today, the RODE might be a better choice if they don't have a Zoom H1, but I think you have a winning combination already.

@@curtisjudd I managed to make a test with the following setup: - Zoom h1n - Behringer XM 8500 - XLR to 3.5 mm cable I set the gain knob at 10, and made a test. I got the following results wit the ACX check: - Peak: -6 dB - RMS: -28 dB - Noise: -70 dB Then I set the gain knob to 7, and recorded with its own microphone capsules. The result were: - Peak: -9.3 dB - RMS: -30.6 dB - Noise: -68.4 dB I really liked the results with the cheap Behringer XM8500 attached. The only question is, whether this dynamic microphone can do harm to the zoom h1n preamp.
hi i have both smartlav+ & zoom h1 & they work well for recording but can you guide how to record on desktop with it or take audio input from smartlav to desktop for live streaming using encoder like OBS. ?
Hello! You pretty much just need to plug in the microphone and start recording. :) Is there a specific issue you're experiencing in attempts to record to OBS?
***** Yes, or you can just do this (while it is demonstrated in Audition, you can also do it in the free Audacity app): ua-cam.com/video/BKepIceNf1M/v-deo.html
I have a H4N1 and an iPhone 5 that I want to use together as recording devices in a scene. What lav's would you recommend? I was thinking the rode and one other but not sure as two rodes is expensive.
how is the stereo recording of zoom h1 or h1n in comparison to new iPhone xs max i mean for recording sound effects and ambient sounds? since the new iPhone has a lot better microphones and also stereo recording,,,,
Hi Curtis, i have an h1n and i want to connect two smartlav+ to it for an interview. Is it possible? Would you recommend that for a low budget interview setup?
You probably could with a splitter, yes, but it doesn't work well if one person's voice is louder than the other (since you only have one input level). You might look at recording to a phone with this instead: ua-cam.com/video/pzYEJijREJ8/v-deo.html
Hi Curtís thanks for the response! I Have that adapter, is the same un the vídeo, right or is another one? I tried using it, but I dont get it to work nor signal or anything. I evento used the VXLR rode adapter al nothing. It just works with my zoom H1. Pleade help me with this.
+Kenedy Torcatt On the Zoom H6, you need to use the 3.5mm microphone input, not the XLR inputs. Also, in the menu, be sure that the plugin power option is turned on (not phantom power). Good luck!
+Curtis Judd thanks curtiss! I will do that! great. by the way I just ordered the rode link and I want to know if it will Have the same problem for the receiver. thanks a lot!
Hi, I have a query. My tascam DR-40 does not have a tabs. and my tie in TRS, therefore I can not get it to work, will it be canceled because it is TRS? Converting it from TRS to TS with an adapter can I fix it? Thank you.
Hi Centro Familiar Cristiano de Martinez, I'm afraid that I do not understand the question. Perhaps post it in your native language and I will try to translate it?
Curtis this is helpful. Can you help me with a question? I bought the zoom h1 to record spoken audio whilst I am out on my motorbike. I am, currently using a boya Lavalier mic (located inside my helmet) but I get very bad distortion. I set Input to 10 and it's as if the confined space of the helmet is capturing the sound twice. Any idea of a mic to use I side my helmet?
From MySeat First we'll want to figure out what's causing that distortion. If it is wind, will want to look at relocating it to a position that isn't quite as exposed to wind. Do you have any samples posted I could listen to?
Curtis thanks for coming back to me. I went into town and bought the audio technica art 3350 lavalier mic. It has a small watch battery, and all seems to be well. Just weird why my boya mic won't work.
Hi... great review.. :-) been looking at this mic for some time,,and i was wondering. i have a question about the Smartlav+ im driving a lot' and i was thinking' would i be able to use the lav+ for a phone call ? i mean if ill plug it in with a Y split connector to my phone (for the mic and headphones ) ' would it function the same ? im asking as for the noise reduction quality as well ? would it lower the driving surround sound as well during a phone call ? so my set up would be the smartlav+ for my voice during the call, and i would be able to hear the other person in the headphones . would love to hear your thoughts on this . thanks in advance for your help. ELI
Hi Eli, that's a good thinking-outside-the-box idea! But I'm afraid it wouldn't quite achieve what you're hoping for. The splitter would not disable the mic on the headphones if it has a mic so you'd need earbuds without a mic. But most importantly, the smartLav+ doesn't have a noise cancelling feature so it wouldn't reduce road noise. You'd probably be better off with a good set of earbuds with a noise cancelling mic. Best wishes!
wow...thanks for the quick reply Curtis. i was like you with a regular headphones with no mic on them as well. i like stereo headsets' but sadly , i didnt find any in-ear headphones with noise canceling mic on then. thats why i was thinking about sort of making something like that/ do you know any headphoneslike that ? or do you have any lav mic with noise canceling feature that you can recommend for my use ? its been an issue for me for a long time..getting on my nerves / thanks for your help
+Eli Hi Eli, I think your best bet is some of the premium bluetooth headsets like the Jawbone Era: amzn.to/1NUAykB I'm not an expert in this area but that's where I'd start based on conversations I've had with others.
Good morning from Australia Curtis! Trying to order my thoughts, as wondering if you can help. So I want some great quality lav mic audio, without resorting to wireless. I have a zoom H1N, and have been looking at tascsm dr10’s. I was hoping for a small form factor for walking interviews/ weddings, so initially I thought a dr10cs with a new Sanken with sennheiser connection would be the best, albeit most expensive, choice. With the sennheiser adapter I can pair it with my other Sanken for wired interviews, and I can record from Sennheiser wireless packs with the tascam if I need. Great. However, now I’m wondering about power requirements for the Sanken. Will the tascam dr10cs/l struggle with its 2v phantom power? I could get the tascam dr10x and use the battery power from my wired Sanken, for slightly larger form factor and maybe much better sound? I would think so but people rave about the dr10l Sanken combo. Thanks for any wisdom you can impart on the subject!
Thanks so much for the video. I have a little question about recording singing. If I plug this, or any other similar lav mic into my zoom H1, will I receive input from both the lav mic and the onboard zoom H1 mics? I film music and I use the zoom H1 to get a good and balanced recording of the instruments and would love to have an additional lav mic set up to catch the singing. My only concern is if, once plugging in the lav mic, it completely replaces the zoom mics. If so, is there something you could recommend to accomplish recording musical instruments with my zoom H1 and then recording vocals with some kind of lav mic? Thank you so much for all of this information!
Hi Brad, thanks! Yes, unfortunately, once you plug an external microphone into the H1, the internal mics are disabled. You might try connecting a lav mic to your camera and use the H1 for your instrument? The trick will be to mix them together which can be tricky since one mic will be much closer to you than the other which can result in phase issues. Ideally you could use a separate dynamic microphone for your vocals and a condenser mic for your instrument both feeding into a recorder with two inputs.
Thanks so much for getting back to me! Ok, that's all good to know. You say that it might be tricky to match the audio from the lav(if i have it going through my phone for example) with the audio from my zoom because of phase issues. Phase is something you can remove in final cut pro? Because I think for now, if I buy one of your recommended lav mics that can go into phones, then combined with my zoom I'll have a decent temporary solution for filming in my apartment. Thanks again!
Phase is more complex than using a plugin to remove it (unfortunately not so simple). The zoom and lav will work. You might get lucky and have no issues at all. Or you may find that the phase interference results in some unpleasantness. In this case it'll come down to luck and how picky you are about sound quality. :)
I have have just bought the exact set up you have in the video but i am not getting any pick up when the mic is plugged in... any trouble shooting thoughts?
I would first confirm that the smartLav+ works with a phone. Then you know that the mic is good. Then if possible, I'd confirm that the mic input jack on the H1 is working with another microphone. And if those are both good, then you know the issue is the adapter.
Curtis, I am a bit confused. I have iphone I use with a dji gimbal. I have a rode lav and H1. Do i plug in lav into input on zoom. Then output goes into iphone?. If so, does zoom become the audio automatically. And again if so, is there a major difference in quality by just plugging lav mic directly into iphone
Awesome video, thanks for it! I was at the store checking the H1, and searched some review where I got you! This will be my next on location way to record my audio for my tutorials! Greetings for Japan!
That is great, best wishes on your tutorials and may your sound be awesome!
Thanks Drew.
***** There's another dude who has done comparisons and they are both very close but honestly the edge went to the Smartlav+ especially outdoors if I remember correctly.
+Austin Sykes I agree with +drewmorgan on the RODE smartLav+
Thanks for the great video. Looks like I need to get the SC3 adaptor next. I like the way you compare the audio samples on the computer screen.
The XY mic doesn't work, however
I wanted to use the main XLR/TRS inputs on the H6, but this doesn't work - Lav+ into SC3 into TRS 3.5mm-to-1/4" converter). I think it has something to do with inline versus phantom power.
Curtis Judd Thanks for the videos, they're rather informative, well shot, great audio, and great presentation too. Subscribed.
No, it needs plugin power so you'll need to turn on plugin power to get sound out of it.
this video was exactly what I was looking for :) thank you!
+Tiskwan You're welcome!
best channel about sound, period! i always find myself in your videos finding the answer that i'm searching for
Thanks an alien undercover!
"RODE smartLav+ and Zoom H1" by Curtis Judd.
Very nice review Curtis ! One question:
2:47 quieter regarding the input-signal or the noise-floor ?
best regards from cologne, andy
Hi Andy, quieter noise floor. Thanks!
Thank you , i try to find many way to conect my condenser mic clip [ like yours] with the Zoom H1 and my CANON T5i.
Then i just see your VDO. Useful for me and i say thank you for share.
Have a good day.
Cheers Curtis, that was a very helpful review - clear and concise.
Curtis, Thank you for the video. Lead me to purchase the Zoom H-1 and the rode adapter. I am using it on a non-rode lavalier mic. It works and works well. A rode microphone may be my next audio purchase, but for now your advice still did wonders.
Thank You.
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback!
Can I use this directly while recording video on my phone? I dont want to use an audio recording app.
Hi Saiman, yes. On iOS this microphone becomes the default and records with any camera app. On Android, the app needs to be able to select the external mic, usually in the settings.
@@curtisjudd Okay, thanks!
Very useful video. I read some of the questions in the comments and you've answered a lot of my queries. Thank you
Thanks!
Exactly what I needed, I was trying to figure out why my lav mic wouldn't work with the zoom and you solved my issue immediately. Thanks!
👍
Thank you, this was very helpful and clear :)
Thanks Anton.
This combination works quite well. I use it as a backup audio while doing interviews.
Thanks Rivius, good to hear your experience.
curtis your the man bro! Its nice to see someone who actually knows what they are talking about. I need a little help from one youtuber to another. Can I email you with a question?
Sure, my email address is a available on my UA-cam channel on the about tab.
Curtis, Awesome Video and First name. LOL! I just ordered the adapter. Really like your videos. Thanks again for the help!
Thanks Curtis and good to meet another with the same name! I hope the adapter works well for you!
It seems that every time I research microphones online, in the end, I get the answers I need from your videos :) Nice!
One questions though (and it's a general one):
Say you have a Lav mic - is it better to connect it to a recorder over a smartphone?
They just make the coolest adapters. Like Apple. I just love it.
Thanks Jorge! Glad it helped.I'll look at making such a video in the future.
Was it perhaps this one: ua-cam.com/video/cKB1WoPlgqg/v-deo.html
@@curtisjudd It wasn't actually and interesting that you noted someone else had said 37. Now I'm questioning my memory as to whether it was 41 was the maximum before a step rise in noise at 42.
hey. very good quality video! how did you get that nice black background? is it physical background or did you add this in postproduction?
Thanks! Here's a tutorial on how I got this look. It is a physical background and in post I do a quick adjustment to finish the look: ua-cam.com/video/cyGfd_AhofU/v-deo.html I hope that helps!
Thanks Curtis. Would you say this mic is the best value for money with h1 use?
Thanks for the review Curtis. Is the Rode smartlav+ the best mic to pair with the Zoom H1 or would you recommend something else (at a similar cost)?
Hi Humanfactor, with the H1, there are actually a few better options. My favorite sounding, affordable lavalier mic is the Aputure A.Lav (not to be confused with the A.Lav EZ): ua-cam.com/video/tQe9YrwV1BI/v-deo.html
And here's another piece where we compare 6 (some are for phones, some would work with the H1): ua-cam.com/video/CZKs1U1GA84/v-deo.html
Thank you Curtis, you are a good man to reply. :)
i can’t decide if i should get this (but with zoom h1n) or get the tascam dr-10l. i really like everything about the tascam like its lock features and double recording, but this is more versatile with the zoom h1n.
It is a tough call. The Tascam is more focused. The H1n more general purpose.
Hey curtis, is there a real difference between recording with smartlav + zoom H1 and smartlav+ + random phone ?
Depends on the phone but most modern phones should do fine.
hey great video! i have been watching all of your videos before i go and spend some money on buying a couple of lavaliers. i am already an audio engineer so my question to you is a shoot out: does the rhode lavalier compare equally to the rhode smartlav +? do you have a video or audio sample demonstrating the audio technica art-3350 after post production? it is a $40 difference per unit that would save me money on this start up project but if the quality is going to be sacrificed that much i know the investment will be worth it. it will be for a youtube mini series. Thank you! Again love how informative you are.
Dean Romo The RODE Lavalier is much more sensitive than the smartLav+ and is less about convenience (recording to a phone) and more about audio quality. The Lavalier has a much richer bass response. Here is a sample of the ATR-3350 after post processing: ua-cam.com/video/BDUwJ-Edd80/v-deo.html
The ATR-3350 is cheaply built, definitely not in the same league as the RODE mikes. If you go that route, plan to replace them. The cables are particularly thin and long (people tend to trip on them).
Thanks!
Thank you - Greetings from Germany!
+Ralf BDieter You're welcome and greetings from the Rocky Mountains in the USA!
thanks so much. I spent hours on youtube to figure out. my video has gotten so much better but I really need good audio.
Thanks for the work. Just clarifying, I reecord direclty from a smartLav+ to my Canon camera with longer cables. What would the H1 bring extra? Just controlling the db level?
Possibly the tiniest bit of improved audio quality, but probably not noticeable in most cases.
great video... do I need a special app to use this mic? or can I just plug it in and record movies directly ?
+Johnny TSC You can plug it into your phone and record the movie and mic together with the phone's built-in video cam app. Here's an example: ua-cam.com/video/Q0dRVx_BmtQ/v-deo.html
Thanks, exactly what I needed.
👍
good info, still sounds good in 2018
Thanks!
Network Unplugged : yea audio quality doesn’t change much throughout the years, especially compared to cameras and how much better they get every year
Great video! Really helped us choose. Thanks!
+Team HETS 👍
Amazing, thanks for the advice Curtis. I will duly follow! Have a great day.
Hi Curtis,
Is there a huge difference in sound quality using the phone as a recorder over the H1? My H1 is broken, and I am going to grab couple Smart Lav + to do interviews. Zoom said they would replace the H1 for $55, but if the phone is just as good I will forget it.
Hi Rachel, not a huge difference bet a little less noise on the H1. But if this sounded good enough, smartLav+ should work great!
Thanks! Totally useful. If I need to use my smartlav+ direct in my smartphone, which app I can use?
+Izo Medeiros on iPhone I use RODERec or ShurePlus Motiv.
I enjoy your video .Your thoughts on the Sanken COS 11 Lav Mic
Good luck!
@@curtisjudd thanks Curtis, love the reviews, very helpfull
I notice that you and a few others wear the lav upside down (or at least what I have assumed is upside down). What is the purpose of doing that?
In theory, that can cut down on harsh sibilance - the sizzling noise when pronouncing S or C.
Hey Curtis, is this smartlav+sc3 lavalier mic considered the best for the ZoomH1? Or this review was just an optional alternative? I really need to shop and buy a high quality lavalier mic for my ZoomH1. Any suggestions? Thanks
Hi great vids, is the Rode smartlav plus mono? or did you convert to stereo in post?
It is mono. I leave it as mono and it just comes out the same on both speakers which is technically dual-mono.
Curtis Judd
Thank you. Just one more thing, will a cheap jack fit or will I need the Rode S Jack? Thanks in advance.
TigerDan925 I'm sure there are other adapters that will fit though I haven't tested any of them.
Hi Curtis,
thanks for your video always top... I want to improve the sound of my videos then I using my rode smartlav+. Do you prefer? Zoom h1 or sound card? thanks.. Alberto
+Alberto Consoli Hi Alberto, with this microphone, I prefer the H1.
+Curtis Judd Thanks Curtis :-)
Hi Curtis,
2 questions....
1. Does this lavalier compete with the more expensive Rode Lavalier ?
2. It looks like you positioned the lavalier downwards on your shirt, is there a reason why you did this?
Kind regards,
Michael
Hi Michael, no, this isn't really in the same league as the RODE Lavalier in my experience. That mic produces a stronger signal and sounds fuller. You have a sharp eye! Yes, I aimed it downward to reduce the amount of sibilance it captures in my voice. Sibilance is the annoying sizzling sound you get when saying the letters S or Z. My voice has a tendency to produce a lot of that. Aiming the mic downwards helps a little bit.
Thanks Curtis! I want to upgrade my lavalier, so i will have a look at the RODE Lavalier.
To add, the "point it down" tip is printed in the Quickstart Guide included with the microphone.
Thanks! I noticed that, after i purchased the SmartLav+ ;) ....
Dutchground Media could you share your views on the Rode Lavalier compared to the Rode SmartLav+?
Hi Curtis,
I purchased a J044 earlier this year through your link because of your great review.
I didn't know whether it'd be more helpful to post my question here or on the 2 Mics, 1 Phone video, but here it is:
Is there a way to hookup 2 lav mics such as the j044 to the zoom H1 so that I can record 2 people into the same file?
Shoot! I had no idea that not all Jacks are equal. Now I have to buy the adapter, which is half the price of the microphone, so not that cheap.
👍
okay thank you very much for the help! love your videos
Most people are more comfortable giving an H1 to someone to wear vs. their phone.
thanks for all your replys
Hi, If you already have the H1, then yes, I would use that. If not, I would use your phone. The difference is not that big.
Oh, in that case, I like the following lavalier mics:
Countryman B6: ua-cam.com/video/Lh1qVoBieVI/v-deo.html
Sanken COS-11D: bhpho.to/2mdJ1xG
DPA 4061: bhpho.to/2piBgHW
thank you a lot
Awesome quick video!
+Dave Katz thanks!
Very helpful vid, thanks !
Thanks for the feedback!
So I suppose first job is to decide how much money you can budget to solve your audio problems, then we can look at options.
just use H1 for 3 ppl
you are so helpful person:) i watched lot of your video. thank you for your great job:)
Hey Curtis, is there any way to ensure the adapter doesn't come out. Would you recommend a sort of tape or maybe glue? Thanks!
gaffer tape should do the job. :)
Two questions :)
1) What wave settings do you recommand using on the H1 with a smartlav+ plugged into?
2) Does normalizing the wave files create more noise than leveling it right straight a head?
(The problem behind it: I have some talents, who have a big "dynamic" range of loudness. I dont want to clip, but I neither want to have a noticable noise floor. If it wouldnt differ to much, Id like to record with level 40-50 on the H1 and normalize the quite parts.) Question again, but other articulation: What creates a more noticable noisefloor: Level 80 with a quite speaker which is very close to peaking or level 40, but normalized in post?
Thanks a lot in advance :)
+Fionn-Gorilla Hi Fionn:
1) I usually record with the H1 set to wav, 24-bit, 48kHz when I'm using it to record sound for video.
2) I have not issues recording with the H1 as low as 40/100, but don't go below that. At about 38, it applies digital attenuation which will still clip. 40 has produced some surprisingly clean recordings with the right microphone. Usually I don't need to go that low for the smartLav+.
+Curtis Judd thanks a lot!
Best wishes!
very helpful thank u !
You're welcome! Thanks for the feedback!
Now, Rode SmartLav+ vs JK MicJ-044... Which one sounds better? Which one do you prefer?
One is for phones, the other for cameras or audio recorders so they're different from that standpoint. But I prefer the sound of the RODE.
+Curtis Judd Thanks!
Great review. Thank you. Would you by chance know if the smartlav+ with a RC3 adapter will work with a Olypmus WS-822? Thanks for your time.
Drawn In Media® LLC I haven't tested that combination but based on specs, it should work.
Thank you for the quick reply, Curtis. I just order it and I'll let you know when I get it.
Very nice video 👌
Thanks 👍
Ahh, my very first audio recording setup! Rode + Zoom is great for the starving film school student.
Agreed!
What do you prefer now?
Curtis, I've ordered the SmartLav+ to use with my iPhone 7 Plus (I have 3.5to Lightning adapter) but would also like to use it with an SC-3 and XLR to plug into my Tascam DR-40 recorder sometimes. If I do the latter, do I need to select mic phantom power setting to power the lav mic?
Hi Bill, unfortunately unless you find an XLZR adapter which also transforms phantom power (+48V) to plugin power (3-10V), this won't work.
hi. you have so much great mono solutions that are portable (ie lavs) what about stereo solutions that could be connected to talent, taped or otherwise? that way you could get good stereo sound of things like doors opening, footsteps, etc. without having to go back and do it again. any thoughts? what i'd like is to put a zoom h1 in talents pocket, and have a stereo mic somewhere on them as well (perhaps on outside of body would be ok too) just out of frame. basically what small but good quality stereo mics would you recommend?
The Rode PinMic also works great with the Zoom H1.
starmedicine Good to know--thanks!
Will I get better sound with the rode smartlav+ if I record it to a audio recorder like the Tascam DR-22WL than if I record it on a iPhone?
+Duarte Dellarole You'll have a little more gain to work with on an audio recorder so when working with people with quiet voices that can be helpful. It try with your phone first and then if you're not satisfied, upgrade to a recorder.
Thanks Curtis and thanks for the videos! Will probably buy this mic since the price in my country is the same as fi I order the Giant Squid Audio Lab online. The rode should be better I guess
Hi Curtis,
I plan on using my Panasonic GH3 and a lavalier mic, into a Zoom H1 to make some talking real estate videos for UA-cam.

Is it possible to attach a dynamic microphone to Zoom H1n using an XLR to jack cable?
Not recommended. The preamp just cannot provide enough clean gain for dynamic mics.
@@curtisjudd Thanks a lot!
@@curtisjudd I managed to make a test with the following setup:
- Zoom h1n
- Behringer XM 8500
- XLR to 3.5 mm cable
I set the gain knob at 10, and made a test. I got the following results wit the ACX check:
- Peak: -6 dB
- RMS: -28 dB
- Noise: -70 dB
Then I set the gain knob to 7, and recorded with its own microphone capsules. The result were:
- Peak: -9.3 dB
- RMS: -30.6 dB
- Noise: -68.4 dB
I really liked the results with the cheap Behringer XM8500 attached.
The only question is, whether this dynamic microphone can do harm to the zoom h1n preamp.
Hey nice video, can you tell me what's the diference between sc3 and sc4? Will Smartlav work with Zoom H1 on sc4 adaptor?
They each convert the opposite direction. SC4 = TRS to TRRS. SC3 = TRRS to TRS. For the RODE smartLav and Zoom H1, you'll want the SC3.
@@curtisjudd Thank you soo much, you just saved me 10€.
hi i have both smartlav+ & zoom h1 & they work well for recording but can you guide how to record on desktop with it or take audio input from smartlav to desktop for live streaming using encoder like OBS. ?
Hello! You pretty much just need to plug in the microphone and start recording. :) Is there a specific issue you're experiencing in attempts to record to OBS?
would you test Sony ECMAW4 Wireless Microphone
+Keetong Champha I will attempt to borrow one. thanks for the recommendation.
hi judd it is possible if connect rode video mic go directly to zoom h1?or i have to pick up the adapters that you mention?
+Mohammad Ridwan yes, you can connect VM Go directly
Can you use the rode smartlav MK1
fabss7 I'll give that a try.
Hello, I bought the Zoom H1 and an Audio Technica Lavallier mic. It writes as mono only. Can I buy Stereo microphone and use it with Zoom H1?
***** Yes, or you can just do this (while it is demonstrated in Audition, you can also do it in the free Audacity app): ua-cam.com/video/BKepIceNf1M/v-deo.html
I have a H4N1 and an iPhone 5 that I want to use together as recording devices in a scene. What lav's would you recommend? I was thinking the rode and one other but not sure as two rodes is expensive.
Here are some affordable options worth considering: ua-cam.com/video/CZKs1U1GA84/v-deo.html
Thanks Curtis you're star.
how is the stereo recording of zoom h1 or h1n in comparison to new iPhone xs max i mean for recording sound effects and ambient sounds? since the new iPhone has a lot better microphones and also stereo recording,,,,
Good question, I didn’t know that the Xs Max has stereo mics. I’ll have to try that out!
Hi curtiss! Can the smart LAV+ be used with the zoom H6 as well?
+Kenedy Torcatt It can with this adapter: amzn.to/1VqbsDX
Hi Curtís thanks for the response! I Have that adapter, is the same un the vídeo, right or is another one? I tried using it, but I dont get it to work nor signal or anything. I evento used the VXLR rode adapter al nothing. It just works with my zoom H1. Pleade help me with this.
Curtis Judd I even used both adapters. I am worried about it.
Will the sc3 work to connect the SmartLav+ to a Tascam DR-05?
Yes!
Which one is best for zoom h1?
1. jk mic-j 044 or 2.RODE smartLav +
thank you.
I prefer the sound of the mic-j 044 but it does require some work in post to make it sound great (it's output signal is pretty weak).
thank you
Hi, I have a query.
Strange indeed! Glad that the AT works. Just don't let that cable get wrapped around your bike's axle! :)
Hi...
great review.. :-)
been looking at this mic for some time,,and i was wondering.
i have a question about the Smartlav+
im driving a lot' and i was thinking' would i be able to use the lav+ for a phone call ?
i mean if ill plug it in with a Y split connector to my phone (for the mic and headphones ) ' would it function the same ?
im asking as for the noise reduction quality as well ?
would it lower the driving surround sound as well during a phone call ?
so my set up would be the smartlav+ for my voice during the call, and i would be able to hear the other person in the headphones .
would love to hear your thoughts on this .
thanks in advance for your help.
Best wishes!
wow...thanks for the quick reply Curtis.
i was like you with a regular headphones with no mic on them as well.
i like stereo headsets' but sadly , i didnt find any in-ear headphones with noise canceling mic on then. thats why i was thinking about sort of making something like that/
do you know any headphoneslike that ?
or do you have any lav mic with noise canceling feature that you can recommend for my use ?
its been an issue for me for a long time..getting on my nerves /
thanks for your help
+Eli Hi Eli, I think your best bet is some of the premium bluetooth headsets like the Jawbone Era: amzn.to/1NUAykB I'm not an expert in this area but that's where I'd start based on conversations I've had with others.
Thanks !!!!
👍
Hi Andrew, I found good results with the Sanken COS-11D and DR-10L. I can definitely recommend that. Best wishes!
Thank you Curtis. Much appreciated. Thank you.
Thanks a lot! You have such a great channel and I'm gonna look into a lav mic to try out this possibility.
Hi Marc, no, there’s no need for an H1 if you record directly into your phone. I’d skip the H1 in that case.
can you mount this on a camera hotshoe?
You can mount the Zoom H1 into a hotshoe using an adapter like this: amzn.to/2cnZrM4
Will the recording be better quality with the Zoom compared to an iPhone?
Just a tiny bit maybe, difficult to hear the difference.
