Het mooiste van alles is Amsterdam is a mostly unknown Dutch folk song from the early 20th century. In the video you will be able to see some old images and paintings to represent Amsterdam throughout it's history. Allthough Amsterdam is the biggest city of the Netherlands and one of it's capitals, it is not the oldest. People have been living in the reagion for over 4000 years, but people started living sedentairy in the exact spot around the year 1000. The region where Amsterdam was settled, was named the "Aemestelle". Aemestelle was known for it's vast swamplands, wich were first drained before the sellement was created. The first settlers named their new town "Amstel" referring to the Aemestelle region and the river that went through it wich was also called Amstel. Later when Amstel had to be protected from frequent floods, multiple dams were added to secure the town from the sea, hence the "dam" part in the name "Amsterdam", or the "dam around Amstel".
