Unstad: A Tidal Valley

Up in the Lofoten Islands, in one of the most northern parts of Norway, Unstad lays in a valley. Home to 12 people and two businesses, this little town has become a magnet for surfers over the decades. In the summertime, tourists swarm the town, attracted to the dramatic landscape and the strength of the waves. Although summer is peak season, wintertime is bringing in more and more people as well for the year-round sport.
Locals have been affected in different ways due to the tourist boom, most apparent in the visible challenges related to a lack of infrastructure.
Recently, Norwegian and international media have reported on the challenges that the town has been facing because of the uptick in tourism. Afterwards, the municipality of Vestvågøy reacted to this outcry, but they were temporary solutions, according not just to the locals but also to the mayor.
So how is this rapid growth affecting those who remain?
