I’ve owned a Range Rover velar for the last seven years , ok not a sport , but it’s honestly the best car I’ve ever owned, been all over the U.K. with it , never had an issue , treated with respect, serviced regularly they are fantastic machines.
Finally a positive comment
I work with a chap who had Velar 2*0 diesel for four years, the only problem he had was the Apple car play sometimes took 10 mins to connect. Swapped for an F Pace just for a change and it’s been equally reliable.
Problem with Range Rovers is people buy them who really can’t afford them. Then run them into the ground on a shoe string budget with Asda own brand oil and cheap tyres. They then complain about how ‘unreliable’ they are! They’re easy to spot as they’ve either been diy blacked out or covered in extra chrome! 😂
I do the opposite.
I have a 2004 Fiesta and service it with fully synth engine oil and have a new set of Uniroyal all-season tyres on it (I couldn't really justify a set of Contis, it's only a 1.2 petrol, not an ST)
@@lewis72yeh that’s not a Range Rover with Range Rover cost of running.
Exactly, the amount you see for sale with Linglongs or Accelera “all seasons” on them is worrying.
@
No but my M5 isn't cheap to run and as I don't live in a field, I don't need a Range Rover.
That said, it's proving to be quite relaible (it's not the V10 one but the earlier E39).
@@lewis72 owns an M5 but couldn’t justify Continental tyres on his Fiesta…riiiiiigggght.
Haha, I had to laugh. I had a Discovery 3, which snapped its crankshaft. So, just as you quipped, I swapped it for a nice, sensible XC90-which, just last week, decided to eat its own auxiliary belt, throwing the timing out and grenading the engine.
I’m just going to buy a horse next!
I was looking at XC90's. I might just become humble & get a Toyota or Lexus
Get the Horse “ sport”!!
Slightly smaller , but will do a few laps of Aintree, when required!! 😂
Did you have full service history on the XC90 though?
1 horse power…
That will only go in the fetlock
I bought a 2017 Range Rover Sport HSE with the 3.0l supercharged V6. After 8 years and about 75,000 miles, i have had zero mechanical issues, though it had a transmission fault once which disappeared upon restart. I also had a couple of check engine lights, which again disappeared after a day. The current issue it has is a coolant leak from the y pipe underneath the supercharger, pretty common for the 5.0l too. Honestly it is an awesome car, and after looking at it for 8 years in my garage, it looks like it's brand new even today.
@shahzain3508 My friend did say the 3.0 super charged petrol was the best choice. He also said it's best to replace the plastic coolant pipes with after market metal ones.
Been driving my 2014 5.0 SC now for 3 years, and 50 000km, best car owned to date, and i've owned the L322 SC , Discovery 3 V8, Defender 2.2, Defender V8, and my other daily is a 1978 Series 3, 109. All been great cars .
You say that because you never owned a reliable car lol
@@fifossucrilhos Classic, I was thinking exactly the same thing. 😆
@@fifossucrilhos Exactly. More money than sense. Fair play to those who can afford to buy and run them properly I guess.
@@MuscleBandityour comment doesn’t make sense.
It’s a luxury car so of course it will take money to keep running properly.
Whether cheap or expensive, a car will have its faults.
@ on the contrary , previous cars included VW Golf, VW Polo ( hijacked), BMW E46 328, BMW E46 325, BMW E53 x5 3.0d ( hijacked), and BMW E53 x5 3.0d again, BMW e90 320d, Defender 90 TDI. Also running a few Nissan hardbodys and Mahindra pickups for business. So theres that.
The range rover is a huge part of my childhood. Guy my uncle worked for had a large farm, restaraunt, o2 shop and vintage tractors. He always drove a range rover and I always knew it was him with the R9 CGH reg plate. Rich people sometimes aren't pleasant but he was the nicest happiest chap who will always help you out and always gave a wave. I was in his range rover 2011, not sure the spec but we collected a car in Belfast, and it was such a lovely pleasure to be in. Such an iconic unit. Last year before he passed, he got his lasy new range rover sport in black, just to get that last new thrill. Rest in piece Cyril, I'm sure the man above gave you a new range rover!
No, you shouldn't

Yup. Not for me. I’d have a nice Guilia saloon. With any engine. Lovely Matt does like them. Though. A bum for every seat.
Buy one for £12k, keep £12k aside for repairs.
Then sell it for 6k once the 12k is spent on repairs.

My friend is a Land Rover specialist, what he doesn't know about them isn't worth knowing. He absolutely loves them. I told him I was thinking of buying a Range Rover sport, he told me in no uncertain terms that I was wrong in the head.
Truly the Yoda of LR specialists
@cupidstunt22 If Yoda was 6ft 2" you wouldn't be able to tell them apart.

So what did he recommend???
@scottyfive4319 He told me to keep my Lexus.
Had my 2017 494l,hse 3.0 d for 5 years, I pull a large fully laden caravan, last year the rear window winder motor needed replacing, as well as the air conditioner radiator, apart from those issues zero problems, the gearbox is fantastic, I've had shoguns, bmw x5 's, this car has been superb, I can drive from east Anglia to cornwall regularly always arrive fresh, oh, fitted a ghost 2 from new, for peace of mind.
Exchanged this from an evoque 5 years again, last year of ownership I needed the Halden pump replaced, without any and I mean truthfully, without any other issues, had the gearbox flushed and cam belt changed along with a full service and mot for under £900, Range Rover specialist, My money is hard earned, and I take care of my cars servicing wise, inside can look like a tip, ! Always have oil changes under 8000 miles

Matt, what a timely choice of subject for a video- I’m just about to close a deal on a 2016 RRS Autobiography with 70k on the clock for ~£20k. All of the points you’ve highlighted such as service history, LR specialists and rainy day fund are all things I’ve considered and have in place so I do feel comfortable about my impending purchase 👍👍
I have a 5.0 v8 autobiography 52k miles full RR service history 2015 for £20k.
When my "Plants" begin to flower, Ill probably be able to own and run one
TBF it's a great dealers car, just make sure you black out the windows and put some KHAN badges on it and your golden mate.
I bought a RRS 2019 with 34k on the clock owned for 18 months fantastic car and with LR warranty extended every year. Love it.
same year as mine which has just passed 60k miles. It's been faultless and is maintained still with JLR only 👍
Absolutely NOT 😮 it’s a money pit
Been waiting for this video Matt. Mine back in New Zealand was superb. Ultra reliable for me. I looked after it as I do all my cars.
Yes Matt bro legend been waiting for this
As a 2011, 4.4, L322 Autobiography owner I can whole heartedly recommend A1 British in Bury. Andy is an absolute gent and they really know their stuff. I should know I’ve spent thousands with him this year. 😂
Second recommendation for A1 in Bury, I've used them too, they are excellent.
The diesel models around 2014 catch fire, my daughters caught fire with my granddaughter in the car and a horse box on the back. Luckily we managed to get all out safely. Car was burnt to a crisp. Same year and model caused the fire at Luton airport, and seen a clip of another going up in smoke in a retail car park in Wales. JLR are in denial there’s a real problem. Buyer beware.
Love mine! Autobiography with the 4.4 litre V8 diesel. 41 mpg on a run!
Do you drive at 30 mph? Never seen 41 mpg unless it’s on the instantaneous mpg at next to no throttle. Certainly not long term on a long run.
Stay clear especially the 2.0 Ingenium engine
During Covid I helped a friend with building a RRC 3.9 automatic. Rebuild the engine according to factory spec and mechanically it was fully sorted and all the welding was done properly. Nice solid car. BUT that Lucas injection system was just awfull. When it ran it ran nice, but when it was not it backfired a lot. The guy who eventually bought it put a nice aftermarket injection system plus LPG injection on it and now it's his daily driver. In some areas it's a great car, but the electronics were bad.
Soft close mechanism has a tendency to fail which will freeze the door . It cannot be opened from inside or out. Only way is to be destructive and open door by either breaking the latch or removing the soft close mechanism wire from lock module.
For all the years Landrover have been making 4wd vehicles they should be bulletproof, sadly they are not, if you want a bank drainer go for it, it’s your money.
They have been making luxury cars and I'm sorry but any complicated luxury cars have issues be in audi Mercedes or BMW.
Nice to hear some very positive comments. Bought 2021 RRS D300 HSE Dynamic just before Xmas from JLR dealer. They also had a special offer on and bought a 3yr warranty for extra piece of mind. I absolutely love the drive but obviously aware of the issues. Hope i don't live to regret it 🤞
If you see maintence like love, this is a car to be infatuated with.
The Meridian sound system fitted in these is amazingly good
Had a Discovery 4 prior, actually two. Both ran more or less faultlessly. Then opted for a L494 Autobiography with all the toys and an engine with warranty because it had snapped on the previous owner. And the brand new engine snapped on me after 12000km (I had even done an oil change at 8000). Got it replaced under warranty again. But all possible other things started going wrong. The L494 was so bad that it almost broke me out from my JLR addiction, but now I am really happy with the L663 :)
Thank you for doing this video. Haven’t watched it yet but I am planning on purchasing one in August
I wish you'd talk about the infotainment systems more in these "should you buy" videos and whether they have Apple Carplay/Android Auto. For me personally that's a deal breaker with cars, and 2016/2017 is when cars started having them. Love the vids!
I don’t need to watch this video to know it’ll include the mention of a rainy day find and Matt loves them
Noticed when you gave a shot of the dash, the engine light was on ! Surely not, on a Range Rover ! 😂
Timing belt is 7 years or 96k. £1400 at LR.
So don't get it done there
Harsh truth-if you’re not making crazy money, this is a financial nightmare. Maintenance is insanely expensive, and defects are common. Air suspension will fail, timing chains on some engines are a ticking time bomb, and the electronics love to glitch. Expect oil leaks, cooling issues, and brakes/tires that wear fast. Unless you have at least €5K sitting for surprise repairs, financing one on a tight budget is a mistake. Get something reliable first-then maybe play with a Range Rover when you can actually afford the headaches.

As one of those people on a budget who would love RR (not for street cred but for comfort and luxury} I hate to have to agree with your comment. That's why I drive a 2009 2.0 MX5. IT's annual service and MOT just cost me £180 on Monday.
As an ex employee pre JLR i would go no where near any model. I remember Matt saying he got rid of the white Sport he had briefly as it was too Chavy. By any chance is this car for sale at High peak no doubt it is m

The best car I’ve ever owned, had one for only 4 months and was in the garage for 4 weeks, amazing example however had an incurable issue.
Previous car was a disco 4 and put miles on it. and easily put a more car like luxury good on fuel economical 4x4
Insurance is a joke if you are 21 however compared to a disco 4
Would recommend one to anyone, got 44 mpg Tdv6.
Would have one again as soon as I can insure one
have 5 range rovers. love them wouldnt have any other 4x4.
The ms loves it and she’s a keeper so why not😂😂❤️😊
I had a 2011 model. Superbly comfortable and great motorway car. Downsides are tax and insurance. It's not a DIY friendly vehicle apart from routine work. Fuel economy is not bad..did over 40 on a run. Mine had the active suspension which had started to leak oil and the roll bars are £1500 each to change and it's a garage job so you need to add labour.
They are not as roomy as they could be, you feel a little bit cramped in the front, but it is comfortable and the boot is on the small side...the newer ones might be better. I'd love another one, but I can't really justify the cost of tax and insurance.
Repairs can't have cost that much then, even with labour if tax and insurance are what's putting you off!
Currently got a Velar and looking to possibly get a Range Rover Sport next, probably about a 19 to 21 reg but not wanting anything with more than 30k miles.
Thanks, I drove Range Rovers for about 15 years, but no more, too expensive to buy and run, insurance is high because they get nicked so often, and of course the imminent threat of a huge breakdown. It is the reliability that stops me buying another.
Love reading the comments from all the experts who've never owned a range rover. My brother has had 2 of these since 2016 & has had zero issues. Ive had an fpace with the JLR 3.0 v6 and had zero issues. The haters should continue to drive their vauxhall insignias and comment on the latest ford kuga 👍
@@me-us1lw heroes aren’t they . It’s actually laughable , would love too know out of all these hate and negative comments, how many have actually owned a Range Rover and how many are wannnabe owners ??
Constant criticism & mocking with there Nissan dukes sat on the driveway 🤷🏽♂️
I love reading Aftermarket Warranty Reliability Studies. Land Rover consistently comes out stirring the bottom of the barrel with it's wooden spoon. They are time and tested proven troublesome. Yes, there are clueless keyboard haters who just bleat the narrative and an equal amount of owners who live in denial and do not want to admit to themselves they are in love with a less that stellar example of vehicle production, aka Fanboys. Simple fact of the matter is the cold hard facts of insurance claims not only back up the haters but expose the awful truth. I love Range Rovers, they are special but also have special needs. Same goes for Touareg, Cayenne, X5.. the list goes on.
Very good advice! You want luxury, make sure you can afford to fix it. Simple!
Luxury usually buys a semblance of quality.
My last one was a 2014 3.0 diesel and I regularly got 40mpg from it. I now have a 2020 P400e. I dont do the mileage I used to and now average 52mpg. Great cars, and as you say, just look after them. All premium cars are expensive to repair. I previously had a BMW 735i which had 50k miles and a full dealer history. It blew the head gasket 2 weeks out of warranty and cost a small fortune to fix.
Why would anyone who can afford a P400e be in any way concerned about MPG?
Talking about MPG is such a British thing like mentioning the weather for no reason.
They are great cars, I’ve owned from new, a L405 autobiography 2020, it does 5k a year, I get it serviced every year and it hasn’t missed a beat. What I would say is that the German alternatives that I have also owned were far less reliable. As Matt said , these are luxury cars, keep a few thousand in the bank as a backup, you would be a fool if you thought you could run one of these on a budget.
Bloody hell Matt, great comment in birth control 😂😂😂🎉
My current L494 has 197k on the clock. 2nd owner was well looked after, I kept up in oil changes with approved oil and genuine filters. I do nearly 30k miles a year and my car gets 3-4 services a year.
Never let me down and it’s the early 2014 model with 3.0 diesel aswell.
It tows well and goes pretty much anywhere off road. These cars meant to be driven and not do 5k miles a year.
Buy a lottery ticket.
Yes. Just don’t scrimp on servicing. You will love it. I do.
Oil and filters do not make inherent design flaws go away.

This video came at the right time i am considering buying a RR sport and import it to Zimbabwe 🇿🇼
Import from where?
Nah, don't think so. Doesn't help that yours is a white body on black wheels - looks like a Saturday night out in Newcastle.
Now I'm thinking of buying one this weekend so this will be interesting..
Our neighbour who is a well known celeb had his stolen outside his house. Then he bought another one and we presume the same gang tried to steal that one but unfortunately for the two lads trying to steal it got covered in blue smart water and me and the neighbour caught them and asked them "nicely" not to do it. It was all done by a laptop in the car they rucked up in (stolen and on cloned plates). I think if you do have one, have a "Ghost" alarm fitted and a massive fire siren fitted inside the car under the seats. I got him one from my nightclub as you have to hear the fire alarm over the music so it's loud to the point of it will stun you!
That are not that unreliable and he takes his off road proper and it was bashed about a bit but it never broke down. It like the old adage; "Put nuts in, get nuts out"" so why do people skimp of cars like this are just wasting their time.
Most of the time around where I live in London it's wannabe gangsters with wafts of drugs coming out of the blacked out windows or yummy mummies with horrible kids in tow bumping up the kerbs at the local Waitrose.
They're a far cry from the Snatch, Wolf and D90's I was used to!
Jamie fyd just bought one, £20K 115K & nothing but problems! Overfinch autobiography I believe. On a 64 plate. Shocking. I’d love one, I can afford one, but couldn’t afford the repair bill, I could afford a Nissan GTR R35, I’d love one of them, can’t afford to run or repair one of them! As this video has confirmed I’ll more than likely never own one. An SVR would be preferably (not the new one) that was a hesitant… yes. The overall cost of ownership would put me off.
A very pertinent warning about the engines given that the engine warning light is on.
When the ignition is on all the lights illuminate before the engine is running as in all cars. 😴
I'm originally from Manchester and moved to Canada in 2008. Currently back in England visiting and can't believe how cheap used RR are! But you'll deep pockets I am guessing
Matt you should review a Velar, I searched if you had one while I was shopping for one and couldn’t find one. If you’re looking at a used sport you should also consider a used velar (at least R-Dynamic SE specced with air suspension). I spent over a month trying to source a good sport with a budget of 30k in the end opted to go down the approved used route for better peace of mind and even then due to ridiculous insurance quotes on the sport even though I don’t live in London I went for the velar which was 2k cheaper to insure than a sport of the same price. You get a much more modern interior and exterior much closer to the later models. With air suspension you still get excellent off road capabilities more than enough for most drivers (really quite impressive haven’t seen one fail at anything thrown at it check youtube videos). Negatives are slightly smaller size (less leg room in rear) and less commanding driving position (but it’s still high up and offer excellent views all round, land rover call it the ‘command sport’ position). You do get an even sportier drive than the sport though especially in sport and dynamic mode when the suspension stiffens. I’m loving my choice so far.
Keep producing this kind of work, do!

I still prefer Petrol don't want to deal with stupid DPF cleaning.
Nope, Love Matt’s videos and advice, apart from when it’s regarding Range Rovers, he definitely has rose tinted glasses
He's a self admitted fanboy so there's that and he can afford those glasses.
My wife has had 2017 RRS for about 6 years and is now on 110,000 miles, it has been no more expensive or less reliable than the Touaregs or X5s we have owned. It has never broken down unlike one of the Touaregs and one of our X5s. Think the crank breaking was Discovery and early RRS see LR Time who talks about it and how they developed and improved it. RRS are nicer places to be than the other large SUVs, have just bought myself one, as once you have one nothing else seems as good an all rounder. Not sure what experiences others have had, the comments dont seem to say why they advise against ownership, but complex large cars will not be kept on the road without some maintenance and costs. We previously had a petrol P38 for 15 years that was very tough and outlasted both Touaregs on our smallholding. The RRS accepts abuse in muddy conditions, towing large trailers and muddy large dogs etc without getting wrecked better than any other large SUV. Then with quick clean up is nice for holiday trip giving you lots of comfort and chill out vibes. Ours also manage between 36.5 min and 41.5 mpg max depending on amount of motorway miles, speed and tyres, although we dont drive aggresively.
The RRS isn't up against stiff competition. Touareg is notorious. X5 not much better.
Only if you want to spend more time in garage than on the road
Great video as always - makes it really tempting when you lay it out like that! Wondered why when people list 'luxury SUVs' and the costs/problems with running them how comes the Lexus RX (or NX) never seems to come up - it is typically reliable, well-made and put together - they just seem to be such a left-field choice, no-one ever really mentions them?
Great video Matt. Any thoughts on the 2 litre hybrid?
So all the engines are crap but its a nice car to be in whilst waiting for the AA to come tp your rescue,no thanks.
Been there before 😂 and no I wouldn’t !
I will keep my Cayenne thank you .
I currently drive a C63 AMG - would love to have a RRS but the insurance is so much more! :o
As I can afford the car and love them but I'm too tight to pay the inevitable repair and maintenance bills it's a resounding no. 😂
Last year after using her dad's for a highland road trip I tried to convince my wife to get a Rangey sport and based on two of her friends getting then and our next door neighbor buying a velar despite her concerns over things she heard ref reliability... Within 12 months all were either broken or had been sold as they had problems! Then her dad's went too... Kind of a hard sell after that! 😂
Range Rover have earned their reputation.
Only if you are either certifiable, or on first name terms with the Land Rover service manager. Or both.
Last year, after 30 years of Land Rover ownership, I moved away from them to a Mazda CX 60 3.3 diesel. I miss the badge but the new car is far better for me.....PS is you want to do a review on the Mazda CX60 diesel no problem...I'm only around the corner from you.

The answer to this question is always, NO.
Good video with a healthy dollop of common sense & logic, just like the Full fat, gorgeous cars that want looking after to a higher level than a Honda civic… pretty obvious 😊
Nobody has accused Matt of logic before.
Several issues 1) being it will like a cat just one day decide to disappear on its own , 2) to get insurance in London you’ll need a good mortgage advisor 3) Road tax isn’t cheap , 4) most of these cars are going to break down with something that’s not cheap to repair and most importantly if you brought a 2016 Porsche Cayenne s E hydrid , you get a better brand on the drive , far better performance at 450 bhp, road tax is FREE, it’s more reliable when well serviced and most importantly vrs the LR Sport - the Porsche won’t get Stolen . Hence why I brought a Porsche approved Cayenne S E hybrid .
Hi Matt is that 3 litre diesel you referred to that snaps its crankshafts the same engine that is used in the Jaguar XJ, cheers Matt keep the great vids coming.
Would love to hear your thoughts on the Velar. Just bought a 2020 petrol one today as my first car.
Just sold my 2017 model sport loved car but never have another one that’s for sure
If I look into local car listings, and remove new RR from the warranty, there are already a lot of listings that mention that the engine is dead. This is extreme.
Quick answer should you buy a range Rover sport? As long as you can have £5000 sat in the bank account and never touch it and literally have it for the car when it goes wrong and then be prepared to put another five grand back in there pretty much straight away for the next time it goes wrong if you can’t do that stay well clear and just in case you think I’m scaremongering I work for a farming company which had range rovers as company pool cars. We had six of these in the pool for people to go out to where they need to go so they didn’t have to use their own cars and one time there was always one back Jaguar range Rover under warranty and a lot of the time there was even two back at Jaguar Land Rover Being fixed and anybody who knows what Jaguar Land Rover dealerships are like when are they being fixed? I mean they had the car. It didn’t necessarily come back that quick because they are useless as dealerships the majority of the time, especially with warranty work
You better go around the world in that money, for what it takes to maintain Range rover for next upcoming years I think..
Good luck trying to insure it for sensible money
2k for any rr, sad coz i love them, but can’t justify paying double the insurance cost
Where does sensible come into buying a Land Rover all of a sudden?
@@SoWereDoingWhatNow Not getting bent over at every turn during ownership.
@@wasitacatisaw83 You do realise there are certain people out there who pay to be owned, wear a nappy and be spanked on purpose right?

Door Locks, Parking brake, Central locking actuators, Virtual display blackouts, Window faults, Remote locking, Door mirror adjustment, Non-functioning airbags and front seatbelt pretensioners.... the list goes on.
But as Matt said, ".. just overlook all these 'minor inconveniences', keep a 'rainy day money pot' for repairs, find a good specialist, keep spending money on it because cars break.." Yes Matt you are more than a little naive and optimistic. 🤣
He's not at all naïve. He's owned loads of these and bought, fixed and sold on loads more. The difference is he can afford to take these gambles for fun as this channel and his other businesses easily cover the costs involved. That, coupled with the prices he gets all the work done for from his regular specialists means that he can act naïve knowing it will create this comments which will help grow his channel, make him more money and so it goes on....That's the smart way to enjoy these cars.

I think a major issue is most owners are people who cant actually afford to run it so they have a shoe string budget and it ends up not getting serviced, and eventually run into the ground therefore making it “unreliable”
Exacerbating the major issues LR have built in from the factory turning unreliable into undrivable.
Its not for me but what a good review, Nice one
The 3.0.petrol is also supercharged
I will stick with my old Defender. It’s terrible, but lovely in equal measure.
Thank you for your videos! They are always so high quality and interesting. I can see that you are professionals.🌶✈️🦊
If you enjoy walking to your destination and donating huge chunks of your cash to repair shops, go ahead! You might be lucky, though, and get one of the three cars that actually worked properly….
