Re: finding golf friends: In the US, there is a company called Spark Golf. Spark organizes 9 hole golf outings on weekday evenings after work. You can bring a partner or they will partner you up with someone of similar handicap. I played last summer and met two new friends who I still play with outside of the Spark league.

The clubs that you want are too expensive, just like that Jag or Maclaren that is out of your price range. Too many people want the best of the best when in reality, a few years old clubs or knock down clubs from those same manufacturers would be more suited to them

@@ForzaOwnz that’s where you’re wrong. I’m not interested in overpriced clubs. I’ll be getting a DTC brand instead of inflated clubs from a premier manufacturer. I could afford expensive clubs, but the price is absurd.

Furthermore clubs that are 4-5 years old the technology difference is like nonexistent. Save yourself 75% and buy clubs from 4-5 don’t be too proud to use used clubs and more importantly too entitled to think you deserve brand new clubs.

I still want to know why golf clubs (take callaway Rogue for example) cost exactly the same, no matter where you buy them....Brick and mortar or online. It's always the same price at a given point in time. I was told by a retailer that if callaway (for example) found out that a store was discounting their clubs, callaway would not allow their clubs to be sold in those stores. How is that not price fixing or even legal?

Yes golf clubs are expensive IF you want the top of line with all the bells and whistles but... I recently started playing (thanks to Rick for all the tips) and I bought a full set of Taylor made burner irons, titleist 915 d2 driver, a putter and a bag the only thing I'm missing really is a wedge and I got it all for £400 2nd hand. Golf doesn't have to be mega expensive if you don't want it to be

Great show per usual. On the topic of golfing with folks when you are not a member of a club. Every Tuesday on my way home from work I play at a local muni. Sometimes my girlfriend joins me but mostly I go out alone. I always reach out to the starter and let them know I am willing to join anyone. There are times they send me out alone but often times I pair up and from that there have been several occasions the group I pair up with have a great time and end up swapping numbers for future golf dates. Put your foot forward and you never know when you will find a new friend to golf with.

I've just recently bought the Callaway Edge set. I couldn't afford a high end set. I was playing with my original 20yr old PGF set. I was going to upgrade the driver fairly soon but I'm actually hitting straighter and its fixed my slice. I think that top clubs are expensive but there are plenty of options out there. If they bring the price down a little will they sell more? Would people turn over their sets more frequently? Would you want a new top driver if it was super cheap? It's all too hard to say.

    • @leftlifegolfsaga9105
      @leftlifegolfsaga9105 2 роки тому

It’s not that hard to say. You are spot on, but in a narrow minded way. Unfortunately there are more factors to consider.
Firstly - revenue. As Rick mentions they need to pay sponsorships and advertising as well as employ people to continually develop their products. The brand leaders are proactively employing new tech to make the drivers either perform better, or to become more coveted and desirable. Listen to how companies make use of trending buzz words and incorporate aspects of trending tech to sell a club. The ‘lesser’ brands can be reactive, which involves tweaking the tech just released by the premium brands. This costs much less.
Secondly, brand image and perception. If your flagship driver is 25% lower than a competitors, people will inadvertently decide it’s somehow a lesser product. Furthermore, having an almost unobtainable high price tag makes people want it more, and it remains exclusive. Taylormade have addressed this by rereleasing drivers at a lower price. This keeps their flagships desirable, while still making the flagships of a couple of years ago now attainable. This makes their market penetration much more lucrative, without diluting their image.
      I hope that helps 👍

In response to meeting new people. The best solution I've ever known for this is very simple. Twilight golf. Not sure how prominent it is in the UK, but in the states many public courses offer discounted "twilight golf" after a certain time in the night (4-5pm or so). Show up and play twilight and start as a solo, but any time you come up on a group that isn't full and they go to let you play through, ask if they want to play up together. If they say no, they say no. This is where 2/3 of my golfing partners have come from in the last 5 years, pairing up with random strangers. If you have fun, exchange info. Golf is as expensive as you want it to be..
You can get into golf for £180 for the Sports Direct Slazenger package set. Wilson do package sets for £300.
Nobody is making you buy a Stealth driver and chances are if you can barely drive the ball 220yds then you don't need the Stealth. That package set driver in light/regular flex is probably perfect for you as it is. If you want a new driver then look at the PXG 0211 which is still £205 for a new driver in any spec you want.
Saying that - there's absolutely NO reason why the Taylormade P790's (as an example) need to be £1000 for a set when something like the Takomo 101/PXG 0211 are not even half that price. There's a LOT of brand snobbery in golf. Don't let yourself get sucked in by it.
I started with one of those Wilson package sets because I figured new grooves are more important than buying Mizuno irons and a TM driver.

But irons in general is too expensiv, if you don´t need a set from 4 or 5 iron down to P. New drivers are, in my opinion a joke in prize. This from a seniors perspektiv,

(RE: Miguel Angel Jimenez's penchant for hole-in-ones) My only hole-in-one occurred the first time I played golf, when I was 9-years-old! I hit a worm burner on a par 3 golf course in Phoenix, AZ (so I'm sure it was hard pan). My father had taken me to the driving-range multiple times before that day to "groove my swing"!🤣 I've played over a thousand rounds since and haven't repeated the feat.
And with regard to irons with graphite shafts, I've always felt they wouldn't last as long and fear them breaking due to them having more contact with ground... although I recently was given a set of used irons (Tour Edge) with graphite shafts (stiff, which is what I play) that I can't wait to try (as soon as the snow melts here in Minnesota)!

I n regards to clubs being too expensive I think the car comparison is great. Cars have a range of prices and features and you don’t have to spend top dollar to get 90-95% of what the top brands offer. If you think of Callaway, Taylormade, Cobra as your luxury brands, (Mercedes, BMW, Audi) for the most part your paying for the name. You can find the mid tier cars/ clubs with almost all the features of the luxury cars you just don’t get the fame for having the luxury brand name. Either way your still driving on the road/ playing golf and it isn’t necessary to spend top dollar.

Are golf clubs too expensive? Yes AND No. Buying the brand new clubs at the beginning of the season is on the same level as these people who just have to buy the new iPhone when it releases at the ridiculous pricing Apple charges... However, wait until that season is coming to an end if you feel you need a proper fitting on the club, and try to see if that's on sale. If you don't care about fitting, wait until the next year. The cost will be about 50% of the original price. I bought 2017 Taylormade M2 irons for $500 in 2018 (4-PW). I bought a Callaway Rogue (not the ST) original price was like $400+, I paid $275. The only club I bought that doesn't fit that mold? A Scotty Cameron Newport III for $160 because I had a friend in the Cameron Collectors Club who did me a big solid... do the math on that. ALL brand new in the plastic clubs of a high quality and we're talking under $1,000 for the whole bag... If that's too much, then buy used. Plenty of GREAT used clubs on the market at a fair price that will get you playing. The only problem you'll have is your own ability. End of story.
To further prove this point, within the last two weeks I just purchased a Cobra Speedzone 5 wood. Not the RadSpeed, the prior model. Brand new club, still in the plastic, with the cobra connect Arccos sensor in the grip for $169. That club was originally $229. Here's the kicker, when you buy that club, you get a full set of Arccos sensors for your whole bag sent to you FOR FREE. That's a $150 set of sensors. It's 12 bucks a month for the app...

Regarding individual sports vs team sports, I think it is very dependent on the person how they react to their performance. Your team may crush the opponent, yet an individual on the winning team may still be very disappointed in how they personally played. While others might just rejoice in the win by the team even if their personal effort wasn’t that great. With individual sports, a player normally puts more pressure on themselves to perform, but some can handle situations better than others. Either way, staying positive, but realistic, is probably more healthy for individuals, especially right after the event or circumstance. Then while practicing later, one can work on improving a skill or even how to handle difficult situations.

Last year i would just pay per round, if i was with a member (which i am mostly) it was $50 including cart, cart costs $15 a round even if ur a member. The coarse will be open from like early may to November 1st. And i get probably 5 free rounds a year there by playing with an employee or a member which gets 2 free rds to pass out a yr so Im not even sure the $900 is worth it but i would certainly play way more. What should i say to the Pro about the odd pricing for 40 yr olds?

Are golf clubs too expensive? They don't have to be if you're not trying to buy a game! There's loads of good stuff out there at good, or even great prices. One of the main reasons why the upper echelon brands 'get away' with charging the prices they do, most people confusing needing a new club with wanting a new club. Yes, there have been advances over the years, but not so much to justify 5%, 10% price rises year on year.

Do not confuse nice new shiny golf clubs and a solid repeatable swing. One is very important, the other is not.

Great podcast, you make a great point regarding the club manufacturers having to pay the players, but the clubs are by and large, made a n China. Made for pennies on the dollar.

Finding Golf Friends. It may be possible to achieve this by using the “Nextdoor “ App. You can set up a Group and describe the purpose for the Group and maybe others will join. I have set one up Golfers United in my area and managed to get one person to join so far, but imagine how successful it could be if it was led or backed by Rick Shiels.

Just wish It was easier to buy last years range. From one year to the next (or even 5 years) technology barely moves.. When ping g425 came out it was hard to get 410/400. What happens to all that stock?

My closest to a hole in one was a thinned 8 iron from 151 yards that never got 10 feet off the ground. It skipped and rolled towards the cup and bounces off the pin and I’m yelling “don’t go in!” Because I didn’t want it to be my first hole in one!

An answer to the title question is absolutely yes. What's even more than clubs all being too expensive is the obvious collusion in pricing between brands and the atrocious delivery time.

the question isn't are golf clubs too expensive, its why are we paying full retail for drivers that don't offer much over a 5 year old used driver?

At my golf club we had a titleist day and i was getting fitted for a tsi3 driver if i bought it all brand new with a tensei orange av raw it would of come to £550 so I bought a immaculate condition head for £275 on eBay and bought that tensei orange av raw shaft of my coach for £100 in total I saved £175 I think going second hand golf gear in good condition is defo better

I think people just have to accept that for the most part, new clubs or brand new clubs are not necessary. Highly recommend second hand clubs for anyone who wants to try something new. But you definitely don’t need the most current clubs to improve or to find more distance. Anything that has come out within the last 10 years will still get the job done.

I think any clubs in the past 40yrs will be fine. Long as they aren't too worn or rusty. If you have some lightly used irons from 1990 they will work fine. Just buy a few grips and you're good to go.

Best hours entertainment for ages, a few observations on some of the content, The Open partnership for it's 150, Tiger and Pat Reed paired up, both cheaters in different ways, and Lads check out Nice 'n spicy Nik Naks, as far a overpriced kit, if you get a second hand Ping G10 driver you won't be far off what the newer clubs are doing.

    Have not started the video.
Yes golf clubs are far too expensive. I am going to start going a DTC route with my future clubs.
    Takomo irons
Haywood Wedges (seem to have the most DTC options)
    Costco Putter
Even PXG has gotten cheaper than large brands now.
    After listening to Rick's take.
Let's say you're a new player, you don't know a ton about golf clubs, so you don't know what to look for second hand and want to get into golf. A new full set of clubs is about 3500 dollars, then you need clothes, 50 for a shirt, 80 for pants, 150 for shoes, 10 for gloves, 50 for balls, 10 for tees, another 350 dollars there.
I'm not a fan of Rick's take here. No other sport has this "elitist" barrier of entry for new equipment. Just because pricing has always been high doesn't mean it's okay or isn't too expensive. The Ferrari comparison isn't appropriate here for a couple of reasons. All new golf clubs aren't Ferrari's. Muira is a Ferrari, Honma is a Ferrari. Ping, Callaway, Taylormade, Cobra those are Toyota, Chevy, Ford, Dodge etc.
It's very obvious golf clubs are too expensive, as there are many quality DTC companies out there undercutting large brands 50%-60%-70%. Meaning the cost of making clubs and still making a profit is nowhere near as high as the mainstream manufacturers are charging. Just look at Takomo for example, a full set 4-PW of 101 irons is $480, extremely similar to Ping i500/i525 in design and numbers. Yet Ping charges like 1300 for a set of Ping i525s. So almost 3x as expensive.
As Rick said, you can always buy used, but the high price of new clubs trickles down to the used club market, 2nd swing for example sells i500 sets for about $800.. still almost double what Takomo's DTC offering is.

Private courses with their expensive memberships presents an optic in which the average person thinks this is only a game for the rich..It's not really true but I understand the thought. If these private courses would open golf up to one round a year for people who aren't members maybe that perception would change a little.
