  • This is just a quick demo showing you how to draw trees with graphite powder and graphite pencils, plus a little chat about the drawing materials I use, the demo is only a rough sketch as it can take me 5-8 hours (sometimes longer) to do a full landscape drawing, I hope you find it helpful .

    I'm having fun & I'm so excited I clicked on your video! I'm very new to drawing & UA-cam videos have taught me everything I've learned. I've been practicing drawing trees....I LOVE YOUR TECHNIQUE of using the graphite AND the fact I can do it by scraping my pencils is not only ingenious it's really fun! Thank you for caring enough about us newbies that you took the time to make this & many more great videos! GOD BLESS!

    Terrific video.....Just a tip that may help some people...I use my blue tack to clean my erasure pencils (both regular and retractable)...just poke the tip into the blue tack..give it a spin and it comes out clean....Thanks for this video Smoothie.

There are many great artist on youtube that give their time and knowledge for free, its a great place to learn new techniques an ideas.Have you got any art work online to see?, I sometimes work in charcoal too. thanks for taking the time to view and comment.

      Try carbon pencils. Question for smoothie: on one of your video's you said that mixing clay into pencils makes them darker..... is there such thing as a 100% clay pencil or a clayless pencil?

    • @smoothie77drawingpainting
      @smoothie77drawingpainting  8 років тому +1

      Mixing clay with graphite makes the graphite lighter and harder, I have got some carbon pencils, they are ok but I like graphite better. don't know about a 100% clayless pencil? doubt it. it would break too easily

    Smoothie, do you have to sharpen the graphite sticks in a sharpener to get the lacquer off, or do you scrape it off along with the graphite when you apply it to the paper? I wouldn't think you'd want lacquer in the mix, right?

    • @smoothie77drawingpainting
      @smoothie77drawingpainting  7 років тому

      I try to avoid scraping any lacquer on to the paper if possible, it does happen occasionally, doesn't cause too much of a problem, but normally I will sharpen the graphite stick back to expose more graphite if its getting short and closer to the lacquer, I do this by either using a regular pencil sharpener or just scraping some lacquer of with the craft knife.

    I really like the look of the graphite powder. Ive been trying to do some landscapes in graphite powder but for some odd reason i doesnt look right when i do it i have the derwent pencil eraser and it doesnt seem to pick up the graphite not sure if its the vrand of paper i use or the brand of graphite.

      Could be a number of things Kyle, most common one being the eraser tip is coated with too much graphite, its best to give it wipe every few seconds to keep it clean when your using it, and yes the paper and graphite will make a difference, what are you using ?

      For paper i have three Strathmore Bristol smooth and vellum 100lb. 270g/m2,Strathmore drawing 70lb 114g/m2, Canson 50lb,74g. Strathmore 64lb,104g/m.
      For graphite i have generals graphite sticks. Daler rowney woodless graphite pencils 2b 4b and 8b. And for pencils i use generals,Daler rowney, and Royal Langnickel

      Shouldn't be a problem with the paper your using, I haven't used Generals or Daler Rowney woodless pencls before so I don't know if they have a high carbon content or not? which as you may know...carbon in pencils doesn't erase well, I use Koh-i-noor, haven't had any problems with them.

      I'll try that out. There's one art store in my city and they mostly sell generals and Daler Rowney. I like the daler Rowney more then generals mostly because generals feels brittle and the tips break really easy. Generals has a better charcoal pencil then graphite.

      Hi Ian, I use the woodless graphite pencils for both drawing and scraping, the grade I used here was an HB.

    You may want to kick up the volume in your videos cause it's sometimes hard to hear, especially if you're listening to your video and it's raining outside.

      @@smoothie77drawingpainting Ty, I will continue to work on it. I do have a question concerning this particular video...., " how do you know exactly where to make darker spots? People are going to think this may be a little crazy but it almost looks like a piece of broccoli. A beautiful piece of broccoli for sure. Without a reference do you think a piece of broccoli would work? Shining a light source from one side and just draw what you see, chunk by chunk. I don't eat it much but I'd start buying if you thought it would help??? Ty

    Am I the only one who simply cannot hear the near-whisper of this narration (and some others of smoothie77's)? Even the low susurrus of the air conditioner when it kicks on provides enough low-level background noise to make the narration inaudible for understanding. It's not my machine-I have a Dell 17 7779 with MaxxAudio Pro, and it *cranks* on anything else, including other UA-cam videos (even some of smoothie77's), but some of them, like this one, might as well be muted. I love your instructional videos, and your techniques, but please, please review your audio levels before you publish. Any good video editor should allow you to boost your audio levels in post-production. Thank You! ;-)

      This video was made in 2015, i did have an audio issue back then, although most people say the volume is fine,it does seem to be very low for some people too, I'm sure you wont have this problem with the newer videos as i have had new recording equipment for the last year.
