    Stoked for Baldur's Gate 3, the cinematic trailer re-enthused my love for githyanki and mindflayers. And played a role in how my current table ended up in a mindflayer den and now onto a nautiloid.
    I was reading through some old spell jammer stuff and trying to do some research when I found this. You do a good job on your videos and do a real service to DMs and d&d fans in general!

    For the sake of brevity, most folks refer to the area between spheres as The Phlo.
    The politics in Spelljammer tend towards the more fluid, so working with Illithids, a lawful race, can actually be profitable. For a fun and tough adventure that shows this off, I suggest SJA4 Under the Dark Fist. No spoilers, but it shows off the potential Spelljammer had. If you are a fan of Farscape, Under the Dark Fist has a bit of a Farscape feel to it.

    There are some "rules" for spelljammer helms at the near-end of Dungeon of the Mad Mage.
    If I remember correctly, it is stated that you can maintain a speed of 10ft. x your highest unspent spell slot while attuned to the helm (as a magic item), without having to actually spend the slot.

    There are somewhat made rules for a spelljamming helm in 5e with the Helm of the Traveler within Dungeon of the Mad Mage, which is like a weaker minor helm given how slow it moves (still relatively fast compared to a lot of dnd travel), but it doesn't actively burn spell slots to use.

It crashed into a bell tower ffs 🤦‍♀️ then when it warped, I don’t think they knew where we would end up because they were immediately surrounded by githyanki dragon riders, then we had to warp again after falling into hell on the next jump. It seems totally random where we would end up next and I don’t think they have a clue what they’re doing yet with that technology

    • @PaleWhiteShadow
      @PaleWhiteShadow 11 місяців тому

      Big Spelljammer fan here, can't help but explain since the game certainly never did. A spelljammer, especially a Nautiloid with a Pool Helm, cannot be operated by a singular illithid effectively. They made the game long before the 5e Spelljammer supplements came out, and the AD&D rules state that Nautiloids require 10 crew minimum, illithids and the Elder Brain working together to control the ship. In the cutscene we can see the rest of the crew dead. For that mind flayer, it's the equivalent of trying to row a boat with only one oar. Not so much not knowing what they're doing, because Realmspace (the rest of the solar system in the Forgotten Realms) has a pretty big illithid presence throughout the Crystal Sphere, but more not being able to maneuver effectively. Also the planet Glyth, the sixth planet in the system, is dominated by a mind flayer empire that have enslaved all the humanoid races there and is probably where the nautiloid from the opening came. The elder brain on the ship was probably in panic mode and descended on the most populated area it could find for a literal smash and grab. Trying to get at least nine more illithids ready to go.
      As for the warping, that is actually not a thing present in Spelljammer rules so it must be something Larion came up with themselves. Personally, I think it is a neat concept. I am chalking it up to mind flayer psionics, the Elder Brain being able to plane-shift the entire ship. But as for how they were being followed, I think that the ship was being tracked somehow, or the gith'yanki were tracking their own already present in the ship like Lae'zel. They specialize in hunting illithids and are extraplanar beings themselves. And the random jumps may have been just trying to buy time for the tadpoles to get deeper. But when the dragon's breath hit the Pool Helm while the ship shifted again, I think something like a critical failure happened and the ship ended up teleporting into a random location. Just happened to be Avernus.
