The Mind Flayer Nautiloid (Spelljammer Lore)

- The Nautiloid is a bio-organic and telepathically controlled vessel from the Dungeons and Dragons setting, mostly appearing in Spelljammer and a ship that sails the Astral Sea under the control of the Mind Flayers, the Illithid. It is one of my favourite ship designs from a more fantasy setting, but still has that science fiction twist to it.

This Video is for critical purposes with commentary by Mind Flayers who secretly control everything.
It's always fun when you're reminded that the Illithid are a sci-fi race that time traveled back to a fantasy era.
If you do do another Spelljammer craft, I'd like to see one of the Dwarven Space Mountains.
Spelljammer is _great_
Ahh yes dwarven ships, powered by space Calvinism (or at least they were in classic SJ)
Frankly i find the mind flayers lore and technology fascinating
The capturing process may not be a feature, but a spell channeled through it by its crew. Most teleportation spells are contact-based, meaning you need to actively touch a target to teleport them. However, there are ways to cast spells through bonded creatures, like a Wizard's familiar. Considering their strong telepathy it stands to reason that they can share a similar connection with the ship.
Love your vids! The hive ships of stargate’s Wraith come to mind
Stargate Atlantis is currently on Prime, I've been going through it for the first time in a while. I'd forgotten how much fun the series was.
You're right, the parallels go deeper than just the fact that both of them are FTL-capable bioships crewed by monsters. They're both dependent on a crew with a particular mental connection to the ship itself, and are built around the concept of harvesting a local population for sustenance and genetic material via teleportation.
Honestly, the biggest difference is that the Wraith tend to care less about whether the target population knows they're coming. Hive ships and Wraith cruisers have a lot more kick-in-the-door punch, where a Nautiloid sounds like it's built more for scouting and infiltration. If the Mind Flayers built warships, or the Wraith built recon platforms, the two groups would probably cross over even more.
DnD. Good.
Spelljammer. Good.
Ship lore. Very good.
More Spelljammer lore please.
holy hell man, I didn't know how much I needed this video from you! plz plz plz do more Spelljammer stuff!!
Have you covered moya from farscape? There's a cool biomechanical ship for ya
As memory serves, _Spelljammer_ lore was inconsistent on whether all _helms_ could use psychics as power sources or not. Mostly because different sources seemed to be unsure whether any illithid could power a spelljammer, because they had spell-like abilities, or if only actual wizards could do it, because psychic is different than magic.
Also worth noting that the ship has artificial gravity (according to _Spelljammer,_ a ship is big enough to create a normal gravity field because magic physics) and an atmosphere bubble (the bubble is another thing that any sufficiently large object has, but it takes a working _spelljammer helm_ to keep the air fresh, IIRC). The gravity thing only matters because ships don't have to agree with each other on 'down...' although you can get weird gravity shifts when ships ram.
When I was younger back in the early 90s this was my all time favourite spelljamer ship! By far. Thanks.
Unexpected but very welcome 👍🏻
I'd love to see more D&D stuff on the channel! Pleasssssee
You should look at Traveller, lot of cool ship designs there.
Sometimes when I look at star trek ships, I wonder what they'd look like if they were more organic, and I usually think of something like a squid, but this is a more reasonable thing; a large shell with tentacles. 😭
Spell Jamming across the universe! If anyone remembers that 80's song Star Trekkin. Well whenever it came on the radio or TV my brother would sing spelljamming! Funny as f... it was.
Excellent video, nice to see you expand your subject offerings!
Love it when you go "off book". Cheers.
Ah, the mind flayers.
Fan 1: "You got your horror sci-fi in my fantasy!"
Fan 2: "You got your fantasy in my horror sci-fi!"
Announcer: It's _~both!~_
Thank you Rick
Fantastic video! Do you think you could do a culture index on the neogi from spelljammer? Anyway keep up the excellent work!👌
I'm glad to see you're doing some of the stuff from spell jammer But no one in my gaming group cared for I love buying the books and just reading and reading all the gaming books and all the novels it was like 6 of them I hope you do some more these spell jammer ships I've always been interested in learning more about ships like the hammerhead the squid ship and the elven armada and the elven man'owar
Dice Funk season 5 has Mind Flayers and Nautaloids.
something different but still good!
Pathfinder also has its own unique SciFantasy setting - Starfinder. Mindflayers do not make an appearance here because they are one of the D&D exclusive races though.
Dude awesome!!!!
Nice to take a break now and then from a lot of the usual Star Trek videos.
I'd totally watch more dnd content from you!
I love this!
In Dungeon magazine #92 there are some more Illithid ships and some varient background.
Loved it
The pool actually isn't the most common helm. The technology is very rare and very new. It is more common for the illithid to use series helms which is multiple helms connected together.
I think you mean technorganic either that or organic since biorganic is basically redundant since biological & organic virtually mean the same thing.
I'd name mine..."Bob"
Good enough for a Planet, good enough for a semi-sentient mind-graper ship. 😉👍
Are you locked inside your room with no way to get out? give your doorknob a little tickle and see what happens
Knob lol
yes, tentacle space empire
Thank you for your Videos. Appreciate your hard work. 👍 I just wish SpellJammer took off.
Something Something CyberPunk. I know but.......
P.s. shouldn't Alien's and WH40k be sued or something.....lol
It's always quite funny seeing a species build space ships that look like themselves. Like if humanity used ape like mechs for space travel.
We certainly need more high fantasy space travel. Why should sci-fi get to have all the fun?
I💚Ric😎
Anyone know where the cinematics of the nautiloid were from? im curious
The game Baulders gate 3 It's available on steam
what about nautiloid battleship or nautiloid carrier that use bio ship fighters come out of the sides of the vessel to attack ground targets with acid rockets and poison spine bullets that fire out like machine gun bio weapons like the zerg
its going to be sliced up by phasers
Are these movie clips in this video?
Please could you talk about Warhammer 40k thank you and live and prosper
I'm skeert😮
Same bro
Why shoot back when you can Just Not Be There
Ven. Is. Neks. Star Trek. Online.
if you are doing RPGs why not Traveller tons of space ships with tons of art to use

WTF is all this guff from? I've got the Spelljammer boxed set right in front of me. Their ships are just ships in the same way all the "looks like sea life" designs are, not organic beings, and their "tentacles" are just a fancy ram prow. This some idiotic 5e retcon?
God I hate Startrek Discovery!!!, how and the hell is this cannon? 😡😡😡😤
