My mate fitted a RB head on to a 2J block and fitted it in his civic. Now his VTEC kicks in at 11000rpm. He told me the other night in the pub. I was well impressed
4 turbos and 2 superchargers
No joke, have you seen SupraSport's custom billet JZ head that utilizes dual VVT-i from the beams motor and Vtec solenoids for variable lift?
Yeah thats some crazy shit... Haven't seen one installed just the front cut out
@@BUZDRIFT Same here. I hope someone test it out. I remember their pricing was on part with a fully built head so it wasn't like it wasn't over priced.
Is this the same one that has the Lamborghini exhaust?
2JZ - Goku
RB - Vegeta
This is the truth - but I respect them both.
Barra - Beerus
Billet Block - Zeno
Yet I still love the RB and Vegeta more even though they're weaker.
Awesome analogy 😂😂so true
Goku has better oiling
So Jesse was right, the 2JZ does decimate all! 🍻
apart from they started with an 2jge haha
ahahahahahahah
Yes, but only after you put 15 grand of overnight parts from Japan in it.
Not really, considering the term 'decimation' is to destroy 1 in 10 as the prefix of the word suggests. The 2JZ doesn't decimate the competion, it 'annihilates' them. This is why Jessie didn't make it into MiT, lol
It can handle more pressure than Lebron James.
Another great video:) Even as an RB fan, its no question after seeing this that the 2JZ block is far better engineered and superior in almost all areas. Both thicker in the important areas and 23% lighter. Hats off to the Toyota engineers from the 80/90s.
Но рб перегреть тяжело, а джей легко
@@Paci_Fist not true at all. Rbs have all types of oiling issues among many others. Never had a jz overheat on me even in the dead of traffic on kill or on one of my chill tunes. I've been building them and around those and 7ms for the better part of 27 years

@matt rardin no shit
I mean Hector's running spoon engines so...
Ya i could spend $100,000 for it lol
If and only if you also throw about 10 grand at it too.
Hey guys we can put it on the tab at Harry's
2jz is quite genius, having bores Siamese makes the block shorter, stronger, lighter, which makes the crank shorter and less prone to flex. 2jz is a little tank.
T1000AX proper engineering mate!
not really,
older engines already had that especially i6 and V12
Don't chevy engines have the same thing?
@@SoulTouchMusic93 In small block I think yes
@@mikamika9781 yea the 400 cubic inch/ 6.5L small block chevy back in the 70's had a siamese bores(it got a bad name because morons were bolting the wrong head on them without steam ports so they would overheat) but with the right heads dirt track guys were building those engine to 700hp at 8,500rpm and screaming them for the entire race.

Barra and BMW I6 would be awesome. Please consider keeping this video series going. Very cool.

What about Mercedes m104

Totally agree this w ou ud be a friggin amazing series! Great video
Very informative, thankyou for putting this together - you learn something new every day!
2:33 FYI, the flow rate of tubes does not double with a doubled diameter; it's related to cross sectional area, which is way more than 2x.
Cross sectional area:
RB = 3.14*[(7.97mm/2)^2] = 50mm^2
2J = 3.14*[(15.5mm/2)^2)] = 189mm^2
Thanks again for another great video. Unbelievable the quality and by far my favorite information channel
I love these videos, good to see facts used to bolster the argument. As much as I'm a Nissan fan, I have to admit the 2JZ is better made product.

Kyle Cameron one is extra cheese and the other is supreme
Well damn I really wanted to be on the side of the RB but the 2j's got it beat in every way.

RBs are just older. They're even based on the old L series from the 240z.

The 2JZ might beat the RB in all these tests and comparisons... but in context and all things considered, the RB is still an incredible, world class engine design. Two fantastic Inline 6s that are only seperated at the very top where peeps are pushing silly HP figures.
I can't thank you enough for making this type of videos, it's awesome!
Great analytical approach, it's always great to see guys in their field. Respectively being objective about their test and letting the info speak for itself. Now we know.
Thank you for the extremely informative videos recently. Not only this one but previous videos as well. Now the nerds and engineers like me understand the why of the 2JZ being so much stronger other than just its namesake.
2JZ is indeed an over engineered engine, stock was around 300hp yet it can stand a 1000hp or more, RBs are are still awesome but what make it shine is the platform Nissan made for it
Fantastic, literally what the video just explained
Absolute fact. I’m a Toyota guy (ST-205 GT4 and SW20 Turbo) but the R32-34 are objectively better sports cars than MKIII-MKIV Supras.
CockYaLegS
I fucking love mine. It has WRC electronics and turbo (with factory water/meth and anti-lag).
GTRs just handle so much better than Supras but if you’re trying to go fast and relatively straight, there is no substitute for a MKIV TT 6spd
@@negativeindustrial It's true the R32-34 chassis are true sports cars, the Supra is more of a grand tourer / street cruiser than the angry animal that is the GTR. The Supra in the JGTC series didn't even run a 2JZ because it was too heavy, they ran a 4-cyl turbo, their WRC engine (4T-GTE), so basically it just looked like the Supra you'd see on a street since race cars are completely gutted, these "Supras" won some championships, but the Skylines dominated the whole decade without being too different from the street versions.
The A80 Supra has its niche though being as wide as an SUV (seriously) an engine capable of 800hp+ w/ stock internals to go really fast in a straight line. Plus can't beat rear wheel drive. I can confirm the A80 doesn't really handle well by today's standard (feels like a boat) as I daily one, its pleasant to drive w/ power on tap if you need it. I can't see myself daily driving a R32-34 w/o going to jail, I would be doing time attacks to the grocery store and to work.
@@p4yat0t
The JGTC Supras used Toyota’s 503e engine which is a race version of the 3S-GTE used in the Celica GT4 and MR2 Turbo. But, yeah, totally agree.
Really enjoying these in depth vids mate. I'm an old school muscle car fan, enjoy building my own engines from dinosaur blocks that finished production almost 4 decades ago so this definitely tickles my horsepower bone. Keep up the great work :-D

Best comparison video to date, guys. Well done.
One quick note/question. You said almost double the flow when comparing the RB 7.97mm oil return holes to the JZ 15.5mm returns.
Circular surface area goes up exponentially as you know, so the surface area of the RB holes is 49.89mm² each vs 188.7mm² for the JZ.
So each hole actually has 3.78 times as much surface area, meaning that same factor of flow, unless I'm missing something.
That would also mean RB total return area is 249.45mm² vs 2075.7mm² total for the 2JZ, 8.32 times as much return flow.
Also makes sense if the 2JZ oil feed hole is about twice as large as the RB, which would provide about 4 times as much area.
Pretty staggering difference if my numbers are correct. I'm sure that oiling capability really matters when getting into high HP.
Even more pronounced if you use Poiseuille equation and assume that flow rates are proportional to the radius to the power of 4 (rather than 2)
@@sweetburlap I'll have to look into that!
Depends on the pump, he's probably quoting figures based on stock pressure
@@rip.tear. Oil return holes see zero pressure though.
Which is one of the rbs biggest issues
This is the reason why toyota will always be my first choice in lines of vehicles and engines because trust me with periodic maintenance these vehicles and engines will literally run forever
I wish someone in the states would do stuff like this with the GM Gen III/IV small blocks or even just comparing different engines in a factual, scientific manner. Keep up the great work!
Real data and real videos. Thank you for sharing!
A comparison of 1jz gte vs 1jzvvti vs 2jz gte vs 2jz vvti vs 2jz ge would be awesome, please!
Yes we need more information on the jz blocks.
I dare say at a guess that the 1jz blocks would be the same since all vvt is handled in the head. Likewise the 2jzs vvt or not would have the same block also.
@@liamcooper5202 as far as i can remember from the Jz forums the only real 2j block difference was some small things on the Ge block, but still takes Gte internals
@@TheJay_Vee yeah the case might look different but the hardness and bore will 99.99% be the same
I think the blocks are the same. Maybe test the strength of the heads. VVTi vs a non VVTi.
Mind blowing good info, very well done. Next one you should get Herman to discuss what the RB boys are going to reduce the issues. Drilling out oil returns to 10mm and adding head drain, oil feed holes bigger, annular oil groves to run 26 bearings, grout to support cylinder walls and his braces.
so much to do Peter, so little time!
Absolutely killer video, Well done PRP

Suddenly people have a new respect for Rb owners knowing all the faults they face when building a fast Rb
But RB was use since r32 considered an old engine compare to 2JZ. Both engine are legend but 2JZ is a masterpiece of engineering
Were can you buy a rebuild engine.
Vijeybareth Vijayan RB30 where produced since 1985... before the R32
RB30 was in the R31 and a turbo charged version was in an Australian car, called Holden. Nissan helped them develop an engine due to emission laws.
I guess 2JZ vs RB26DETT a much more fair comparison.
@@Vegun92already compared and the jz is the better engine. The rb30 has thr same bore and stroke also and is much stronger than an rb26 with less issues and the jz is still better in almost every single way hence this comparison. The 2jz didn't come out until 92 with the aristo so it's newer. Nissan had more time to perfect the rb motor in general than Toyota had with a jz. The qjz came first in the earlier part of the 90s 90 and 91
The 2jz came out in 92 it's younger than the rb30...thr rb30 is stronger than an rb26 you do the math

Having owned and built quite a few RB30's and 2JZ's I can agree entirely with what they say, However, as one of my first cars was an RB30 powered R31 I do tend to have a wee bit of bias towards the dirty-30 :P

Excellent job guys!
Before I even watch this I'm 99% sure that the 2JZ is a better engine. Only the Skyline is a better platform.
Actually it's not the biggest advantage the A80 has over the R34 is the chassis itself it's more refined and aerodynamic. When you're in a A80 things dont feel cheap either like the R34 the biggest problem is the BNR34 was made based off an economy car counterpart and that absolutely sucks. The GT-R has a better weight distribution but the Supra is more solid especially at high speeds on a road course. Also at high speeds you dont hear creaks and rattles like you do with a R34 chassis. The ATTESA gives way better traction and it can ALOT easier to drive than the Supra depending upon which tires you run. In modern day AWD can be irrelevant based on that because I've chased down Evolutions and Imprezas with ease on the touge. I've even had an Evo VI understeer into the grass in front of me on a road course.

JZ all day everyday, there is a reason JZ engines break world records. It is not an exaggeration to say it is probably one of if not the greatest engines ever created, to think such a simple design can go such a long way. That said, even as a 2JZ fanboy, I would never swap out an RB from a skyline GTR. They're still a great engines, that work incredibly well with the GTR chassis.
Wind of change 2jz are breaking records due to the Barra being rare in the States.

I agree all three are great engines and the later 4G63’s addressed this issue but you and I both know the 90’s engines had SERIOUS crankwalk issues the second anyone attempted to run higher than stock boost. The 3S-GTE has always been a tank of an engine, especially from ‘94 on when Toyota switched to a MHG as stock.
No offense, but the 3S was just a way more reliable engine from ‘88-2000 than the 4G for tuners as one would expect from Toyota/Yamaha.

Thank you, excellent comments. The bore pitch of the JZ is 92mm, of the RB 96.5mm. I've calculated the actual journal overlap (the enclosed area of the intersecting lens) of the 2JZ (stroke 86mm, rod 52mm, main 62mm) at 5.53 square inches, and that of the RB30 (stroke 85mm, rod 50mm, main 55mm) at 3.25 square inches, a huge difference. Zed. Other than that great video. Professional, factual, unbiased. So much better than the Haltech video that was done recently
It actually makes sense for the RB26 to have thinner castings to save weight, after all it was built for the R32 to compete in Group A. The engine would not see extremes of power that would endanger it's integrity as it would be running restrictors and any extra material in the block would be dead weight. The design probably just got carried over to the R33 and R34 where it would not need more strength as only the R33 raced in Le Mans (again with restrictors), and all racing in the Japan GT circuit was limited to 500hp.
The 2JZ on the other hand was built as a reliable, strong unit for a heavy street only GT ( Supra, Soarer and Lexus SC300) and was not constrained by weight limitations. The Supras that did race in the japanese GT championship did not use the 2JZ but the (racing only) 4 cylinder, 2.1 liter 503e.
Be interested to see a comparison between the old 2JZ and the BMW B58 in the new Supra. BMW makes fine engines for sure but it has a lot to live up to!!

It's pretty conclusive I guess. The Toyota block is designed and built better. The GTR is a better car though and if it can handle 500-600hp reliably then who cares about more than that.
All the people pushing them double that.
You're right! After all the r34 especially was an overall technologically super equipped track/circuit assassin, purpose built not as a highway pull beast or dyno desyroyer.. The rb is surely still very functional in the package for its intended use, with many cool features and a race bred pedigree.. But on the other hand the 2jz is unquestionably capable to fulfill the power hunger and the number chase of our days. Don't get me wrong I love em both, it's just that the 2jz is so overbuilt and overengineered that it's insane! But you can't compare or diss either one, as much as you can't diss the Supra over the r34 and vice versa they're both great cars at what they do! But on the street/drag scene the 2jz is always gonna be the top dog for it can meet the obscene expectations and abuse of the particular application!
john maselli 👍👍👍👍👍
Of course man!!! Nothing comes close to those two!! They are beyond cars, they have reached legend status! They were made to be legends and in our minds they've become entities of the car culture!
john maselli oh and the nsx I might add as well, not so much on the raw performance aspect but it's one of the Kings you know, and a beautiful car too!!
I just love the sound when someone measures in metric
Fantastic video guys. Very informative and interesting

I think every enthusiast knows the 2JZ is better.
should be known by now lol
@Assman Kramer Im pretty sure you get higher rigidity with a V. Also, better mass centralization.
@Assman Kramer american market...........
Assman Kramer toyota made the same thing abandoning JZ over a shitty GR series i think thats what they called
@Assman Kramer A V layout construction actually is better for a lot of reasons. Ever wondered why formula 1, gran tourismo and time attack cars have V engines?
RB in my heart! Great information, thank you from Kazahstan! But you forgot tell about better colling system on rb blocks.
Im really enjoying this
