    THE SAFETY VALVE is a derivative of the VALVECASTER a guitar pedal project by Matsumin. Optimised for modular synths! NO HIGH VOLTAGES FOR SUPER SAFETY :).

    Jam session starts at 6:12. Hendrix died just as synths were taking off, depressing to think we'll never hear what he would have sounded like with this stuff. But props to Sam for an excellent build video and of course tweaking some outrageous sounds out of his crazy devices.

    LOOK-MUM, can you make a demo video of this module with a slight distortion (or overdrive or fuzz?). Here the levels are too much (even for me) :) Maybe some famous solos of Depeche Mode, Red Snapper, Amon Tobin, Moloko, Portishead, Bjork... etc. - just the examples :D Covers are the great things to get some hype, BTW!

    Would likely require a lot of tweaking, but I know that there are vacuum fluorescent display preamps, like the Korg NuTube that operate on a similar principal to a normal vacuum tube. Is there a way to wire up just a traditional fluorescent light tube that you can just grab at the hardware store into a useable distortion preamp?

    The best thing about a valve is that if he ever blows for any reason you can just unplug it and plug and new one in with a transistor if it's directly solder to a PCB you have the ball ache of taking the unit out of its casing desoldering it and soldering a new one in

    Hi!
    Any chance someone could explain me how to power this module as I don't have eurorack type of power (+12 -12 and ground) but normal dc power (+12 ground)?
    Maybe this is a really stupid question but I would really appreciate help :)

    • @illnessofjeez
      @illnessofjeez 5 років тому

      2 -12VDC supplies, just tie them together opposite polarity so you get +12, 0V, AND -12 as reference points, it'll do in a inch but maybe be noisey or unstable/regulated like your after. but its been done.

    Hi Sam, I've e built this four times now and eve time the 27ohm resistor heats up real HOT 🔥
    Switched it to a 10watt 27r still pretty hot.
    Not sure where I'm going wrong, using a 15V
    Supply instead of 12V could that be it? Cheers thanks for the electric lessons !

    • @craigbrown7929
      @craigbrown7929 2 роки тому

      Based on the schematic, the tube is wired for series heater. 12.6volts across pins 4&5. This will pull 150 Milliamperes of current. If your supply is 15volts you need to calculate the correct size resistor.
      In reality the resistor is not needed if the supply is only 12volts. To calculate the size resistor need with a 15volt supply you need to drop 2.4volts / by 150mA to give you the resistance. To calculate the wattage rating- 2.4V x .15amps (150mA)= Watts.

    So, how difficult would it be to start making some DIY projects like this? I've been researching for this type of modular synths and found out mainly two things... Those are freaking amazing, and you need lots of money if you don't go the DIY path (which I'm willing to).

    i dont know much about much - but i pretty well put this thing together on a breadboard. and to test it I was just going to get 12V DC wall wart that I have already chopped.
    On the schematic it says it requires +12v, -12v and Ground. Can i do this with just a 12v DC wall wart? it only has 2 connections - 12v+ and GND.
    i think im missing something fundamental in my understanding of electronics here...

    • @LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER
      @LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah you need a -12v too but if you listen to this circuit hefore the opamp you'll hear sound without a bipolar supply

    • @nyrbsamoht
      @nyrbsamoht 3 роки тому

      @@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER i just tried it with an old computer powersupply and used the -12v rail from that - but it didnt quite work lol.
      The output was very very quiet .
      Im gonna double check things first and ill try taking the audio from before the opamp thanks so much for the project info and the suggestions!
      ive had so much fun getting all the parts and putting this thing together over the past couple days :) thanks again

    the original schematics have 12AU7 (ECC82), NOT 12AX7 (ECC83), the reason being AU has less gain than AX, it works obviously, but for a guitar AX tube sound is too harsh in this circuit
