Honestly with the amount of cards and explanation going on, I was kinda expecting for dairy cow and dairy cow farmer to show up after a while.

Let's be honest, they belong in any video.
I thought the same thing. Place an ember moorble into Volcar.
I always love board games that are more 3 Dimensional 😁👌
This game sadly is only pretend 3D (board is 3D but most of the game actions are in 2D) but it's still nice to have a big prop
@@sinom well, you roll marbles down a slope, that's the main mechanic of the game. Good luck doing that in 2D.
any other 3d board game suggestion for like, one player? (cuz I got no friend LOL)
It’s too bad they didn’t send any expansions, those would have probably made it better for you, they add swarms of tiny bee marbles you pour everywhere and snake marbles and a tiger you launch at people from the table and a whole other island with a sunken ship that has more treasure but also a crow’s nest with cannonballs that spill everywhere. It’s definitely more chaotic when you add some of that stuff!
that sounds really fun, but i bet adding all those expansions with the game would cost like 200$
@@adamolij7444 PRETTY MUCH! board games are a financial struggle.
well board games should stand on their own. Expansions are just that - an expansion of the base game.
Does sound fun to roll a bunch of bees though.
@@adamtuck ikr, plus they require people to play with. This is why I stick to video games lol.
I like this idea. Kickstarter no doubt would like to sell you your own dead god's machines to make it for you.

I have a friend who owns a copy of the original Fireball Island, and I've played it a few times relatively recently, so I'm in a decent position to compare Curse of Vul-Kar with the original _without_ Nostalgia Goggles or ancient marketing hype. The original was _also_ somewhat cheaply made - the Island was vacuum-molded from fairly thin plastic - so this version actually looks equivalent in manufacturing quality, if not _very slightly_ better. Gameplay-wise, this looks like an improvement in nearly every aspect - the original has its moments of tension and backstabbing treachery, but was _mostly_ a linear dice-rolling race with a few strategic decisions to make along the way, and the occasional loop of multiple players being repeatedly knocked back to the same location. CoVK seems _much_ more open-ended, with more branching paths and tactical decisions. Vul-Kar seems less threatening, I agree, being rotated only through card-play rather than at-whim and with the Fireballs being semi-randomized to three paths, leading to "Fireballs that roll and do nothing". On the other hand, being able to flick the Embers in _any_ direction (not just along predefined paths) makes them more interesting as threats. The Scar end-game counter seems like a nice PvE mechanic, to keep an open-ended game like this from dragging on indefinitely, and adding another risk-reward element to spending too many turns wandering after treasures and snapshots. All together, this seems like a game with "simple rules", but with potentially deeper gameplay than its predecessor.
ahh shit, I remember seeing this years ago on avgn's channel and was kinda sad you couldn't get it anymore, glad people have remade it
Board James was a weird show
It's not the same game though, sadly.
I remember when James Rolfe played with this thing
Me too
Me 2
you mean board james
I like how that series went from a 20 something bored guy having a nostalgia trip to a serial killer torturing the two men who ratted him out by trapping them in various pocket dimensions.
That makes me wish he'd review Key to the Kingdom
I feel like Board Jams reviewed this... now I’m getting flashbacks lmao
He did! The original board though
Yes, _Board Jams_ did an episode of the original.
HOLY SHIT I FORGOT ABOUT BOARD JAMES
Holy shit I remember
Can we all just appreciate the Mario party 2 pirate map music and how perfectly it fits here?
So like Mario party without minigames
This came out in 1986, so which is like which? (:
But yeah, the 80s and 90s kids toy board games (like this, Mouse Trap, etc) are pretty boring and Mario Party's mini games were needed to make things interesting.
Congratulations you’ve discovered what a board game is.

Had this game as a kid. I don't remember ever actually playing it. I do remember setting it up and making up adventures in my head with other action figures. It was pretty good for that.
Completely agree with your conclusion at 15:38 , I hope they learn from this for future remakes.
I’m really glad I watched this before picking up the game. I’ve been looking at it for months at my local hobby shop and will likely still get it, but I’ll have better expectations now. Thanks, ProZD
OMG! I had the original MB game back in the day! Wow! Man--I don't remember it being this complicated. LOL
What if the board game reviewed you
@@theg-man4474 ...
It would say i suck as a player and as a person
I find the game is made more interesting when you get more souvenir cards. We house-ruled that players are initially dealt three souvenirs. We also play with all the expansion.
there is 5 expansions, and painted miniatures for players. I heard that you could use a cheap plastic fishing tackle box to contain all the little bits.
@@scottdoesntmatter4409 yes, I have them all.
I threw in on this kickstarter. Still need to play it and like 4 other games I backed. Now we need a 13 Deadend Drive remake.
I'm digging the Mario Party background music 😁😁
Right?!?! He always has such fitting background music, from so many amazing classics
Isn't that Donkey Kong Country music?

On second thought let's not do that. I'd like to keep my lunch today.
I would like to point out a glaring rules mistake, concerning how each character plays. They are NOT the same. After watching Shut Up and Sit Down play Fireball Island, I could only conclude that the Green character is Oddjob levels of extreme overpoweredness. His lower center of gravity gives him a hidden perk of a 5% chance of surviving being hit by a marble.
I am developing a variant to fix this. Players will first draft their character pieces, and then they will receive X dollars, and then they will auction the character piece they chose to the other players. The auction will be an innovative mix of Modern Art, Twilight Imperium, and Redneck Life. To compensate for turn order, I am also adding rules for controlling the Hello Copter by a player, by adding an 18XX style stock market shares system to control different Hello Copter companies. I believe these fixes will make the game extremely balanced, and worthy of constant tournament play.
An interesting thing you could do is permanent damage - any part of the island that gets knocked over or displaced doesn't get fixed.
Would make more sense too lol. Does Vul-Kar have a repair crew on standby or something?
Would also be nice to have more unstable spaces - seems there's only 3, and 2 of them are rather close to each other.
Wait..wait!??!? This was remade!?!?! FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!!
I can hear Board James screaming for joy in the distance
When i was little i used to play this board game called "Billy Bones" alot. Dont remember alot except Nice visuals, batteries and stealing coins or something. Im sure my nostalgia is making it better in my head
Wasn’t expecting this art
...why not?
My father left me the original Fireball Island, with all parts and in its original box. It's very competitive and much darker than this new one, but I can appreciate Restoration Games for redesigning one of my childhood favorites
One of the board games I find particularly interesting in of itself
This was almost indistinguishable from your spoof games. Wonderful!
Me: it's time to go to bed
UA-cam: *random boardgame review*
Me: ok
Very on point review, Fireball Island is def more of a toy than a modern board game, but not toy enough for it to feel fun.
I played the original fireball island when I was a kid. I played the new version recently with my adult friends. My assessment is the new version is not for kids under 12 years old. The new version is really for adults. The original is easy to play, simple to understand and the gameplay is linear. The new version has to many rules to remember, a nonlinear map, new components and a point system to win. As an adult, we still got confused with some of the rules so we played using a simplified house rules, which made it more fun to play.

Me: Ah sh*t here we go again
(I love Prozds videos!)
This was the second board game Kickstarter that I backed and I was not disappointed. This has easily become one of my favorite board games of all times. Just simple, fast and fun. The expansions incorporate really well too. Highly recommend it!
EDIT: After watching the rest of the video, I highly recommend trying it again if you ever get to play with some or all of the expansions. They all add more chaos to the game and one adds a completely new island board to traverse. Other smaller expansions add specific powers to each player that makes each player feel a bit more different and unique. Just a heads up in case you get to play this again with some of the expansions.
Omg i use to have this game as a kid. A lot pieces missing, never knew how to play but still had fun with it
I never knew they updated it, I still have the original in my closet!
Some assembly required. I am sold. The add-on sets also are a nice touch.
You have just dug up memories of when I was a kid. I remember playing this with my grandpa and grandma at their house when I was only 8-9... Good times.
All that's left are the voiceover lines for the cards
Wow, I had the original and this is way more complex. I like it!
I really wanted that board game after seeing Board James!
Keep these videos up, man. Don't let nobody bring you down.
Just re watched Board James yesterday, interesting
The hellocopter! This game looks fun and reminds me of the old 90s kids board games.
I remember we didn't have any of the pieces except the board and a few of the original marbles; I used to just dick around for hours rolling the balls around all the cool routes, using my imagination.
God, how barbaric the world must have been before the internet.
I had the game with all the pieces, and would still end up doing what you did as well. I found the game pretty boring.
A casual fun game with more rules than Agricola
So many memories of the original game. I believe a guy brought it to Connecticonn one year and there was a line to play it. A LINE!
had that game as a kid, good fun
I remember having the original MB version as a kid. I never really played it as a game, but it was fun to play with just as a toy.
ayyyy!!!! I saw this on Board James! XD
Unrelated but I just watched the first season of Tuca and Bertie and heard you in it! Absolutely loved it!
Board James summoning circle here
Oo I was looking for that domino rally circle somewhere
Anybody remember the Board James review?
I remember this game from when I was a kid. So at least I have the nostalgia going for me.
Welp, I'm 36 and did grow up with the original and actually repurchased the original (complete) for about 200 bucks, several years ago. Also, I love that this new edition is a love letter to old school gents such as myself.
Having said all that, I agree with a lot of your review. This is in fact at its core, a kids game. Very simplistic in its way, and as a kid, this game was GOD. But to remake it for modern times, knowing a newer more sophisticated audience would be playing, maybe more was needed? The expansions perhaps address this.
Also this remake redesigns the board and introduces treasure cards, the one ladder, treasures, the helicopter, a point system, multimouth Vulkar, new cards and effects, trees, some rules, and a few other things... all which are not a part of the original. The original is much more straight forward, capture the jewel and escape the island, win. All the while you dodge cards and fireballs!
Anyway, for those with nostalgia I imagine you'll love this remake, and for those curious. But beyond that, I fear others will find the gameplay a bit too shallow.
And I agree, they sould have went all in with traps! The expansions somewhat fill this void.
Also, Forbidden Bridge, It From The Pit, and Crash Canyon are similar games in overall style. I actually use to use my Forbidden Bridge as an expansion to FI lol. Yeah, I was pretty hardcore into this scene for a minute.
Might I add, play this or the original with alcohol, everytime somebody gets fireballed, take a sip. Add island music playing in the backround and good friends in semi-beach attire and wham, good times.
not gonna lie the board looks like it would be used in a mario party map.
There’s a top game that’s similar, I remember it being more engaging though. You could hide under bridges and in caves and then trigger the tornado, its great
Any clue what the game was called?
@@nicholascagefcnicholascage8588 not off the top of my head but if I figure it out I'll let you know
*nods politely*
So essentially: you could wander around the island keep taking pictures and come out on top? That's unbalanced.
No, you can only hold one snapshot of each color. So three for the base game(yellow, red, blue) and four if you have the expansion(adds purple).
Seems worth to play it on shaky table. Just to add that effect.
bruh this game brings back nostalgia. The original I played.
I remembered this a few years ago because my dad's version is like 35 years old, this is so nastolgic.
The board reminds me of Wacky Blasters
Me and my fiancé got to go out and play the demo version of this when they were in Lexington, and he backed it on kickstarter and got all the expansions and stuff too, it's so much fun!
This looks like version of old Tornado Rex game, but it's actually got *some* strategy to it.
I actually played this with Rob Daviau at a convention. I decided I wanted it for my kids, and I suspect that's how most of the adults who grew up with it feel. They don't want the game to turn into an adult's game. They just want to share it with their kids. I think the simplicity works for that.
1:22 that yellow character's pose about to do some hip thrusts ^^
accidentally knock something over 2 minutes in: "Oh, shit"
Actually, i think that fairly sums it all up.
The mechanics on this are crazy. I want to play this.
This is the best board game ever made
Board James Minus Board James
Just don't turn into a crazed murderer and kill your friends, sending you into a strange dimension where boardgames come real, like another UA-camr who played this.
Who else is getting flashbacks of Board James playing this?
I only know this one because of board James.
I want this explicitly because it has a hellocopter.
I got to test this one before the KS wrapped up, and I was really glad I did because hoo boy did I not like it. The trays are just kind of janky and nothing had any impact.
If you want a great Restoration joint, play Downforce. Downforce is a fantastic race game that does card-based movement really well.
I wish I could remember the name of it but I swear growing up I had a game very similar to this but it was space-themed and it was all craters and asteroids and stuff.
Omega... something, right?
@@blues713317 it took some digging but I finally found it! The game I played was called Rescue from Planet Zero. I think it was basically a Fireball Island clone with some math problems thrown in haha. Was the one you were thinking of called The Omega Virus, by chance?
AVGN or I guess Board James would be proud.
I swear I played this game on my childhood friend's ps2 or something. Was like a mini game collection or something.
Loved this game as a kid. But even with the price drop I can't see my buying this with the quaily issues. Thanks for the review!
Board games for when you are board
*_yeah I love being bored by being boring_*
Or bored enough to go batshit insane and kill ur friends
god i remember having this but never actually playing it
This games more complex than I thought after watching this
This seems really, really complicated
it's a great game to play as you try to sabotage your friends while not getting screwed over yourself
Reminds me of "Tornado Rex" game I had as a kid. Just a little more complexed.
You know, there is about 3 r 4 expansions for this game that enhances the game. Adds more things. Would love to see a review made with the exceptions added.
I had the original game as a kid and it was great.
BOARD JAMES IS BACK
wait...
Me and my brother playtested the prototype with JR Honeycutt.
Imagine playing this during an earthquake
I remember this game when I was a kid. I've never played this ever. I thought all you do in this game was roll marbles on the board. I didn't know it was this complicated.
This is NOT a game made for kids. I agree that it's mostly just geared to people in my gen x/millenial range who played this as kids. It's too complex, with multiple objectives to be a kid's game. I think at best this game would be fun for player 12 and over. Whereas the original game was really fun for 7-12 year olds, with much simpler rules, more durable pieces and a clear objective for everyone to go after.
Full disclosure, I had the original game growing up and have played it a few times recently at my parents house. I was really excited for this game to come out and bought two in the kickstarter campaign. I was really excited to share this with my kids. But overall I've been very disappointed and honestly no one wants to play this game the last two years. They really missed with this game. They took the Fireball Island name and a few of the aspects of the old game, but changed almost everything else. I think they would have been better off to just try to re-create the original.
FIREBALL ISLAND ... not to be confused with FIRE ISLAND
Board James flashbacks
TBH this game looks like it would be a lot of fun to play.
