Modding a console is certainly giving a "dead" console a new breath of life. Also Wii sold so much you can get them for cheap so not modding it is a waste I think
I personally think the wii is a great investment if you homebrew it. I can download any gamecube game I want onto my usb stick and play it on my wii with a gamecube controller or a classic controller. Also its amazing how much classic titles you can get on your wii via emulating or injecting it into a wiiware title. Mario kart wii modded is free online play. And the best reason to buy a wii is Project M and Project M ex mods. People are still coming out with original movesets or porting characters over from the new smash games. Modding the wii for me was more than just a new breath of life it feels like an entirely different system for me now, I definitely recommend doing it.
I know a few people who bought Wiis at the time of it's prime specially to hack it, and then wound up also buying games because well why not that already have the Wii.
They did port a lot of Virtual Console games to the Wii U eShop, and if you have a Wii Shop account with those games already purchased on the vWii, they'll offer you a huge discount. It's actually really nice, you can get Mario 64 playable on the Gamepad for just $2 instead of $10 like normal. Not sure if this'll continue after the Wii Shop closes, however.
@@bugnug5593 That's like saying that the NeoGeo games on the Virtual Console weren't NeoGeo games because you were playing them on the Wii. Or, perhaps more relevantly, that DSi games played on the 3DS aren't DSi games. Games exclusive to the service can kind of be considered to belong to their own platform.
@@FollowMe4REP No, thats not what I'm saying. Virtual console means that you can play a games from an older system on a newer one. If your playing NeoGeo games on the wii there still NeoGeo games but its also a virtual console game because you are playing it on a new system. Ware means exclusive, so wii ware means games exclusive to the wii. The Wii is still a super strong, versatile yet cheap machine that keeps on giving. Virtual Console and 240p Component output makes it really good for retro gaming and even has a lot of input options.

Too bad the Retroarch guys don't really care about 240p on the Wii for their amazing emulator frontend. It's pretty much the only reason My Wii is still hooked up to my 32" CRT TV after all these years. My PC can only do HDMI and display port. Nothing beats the original Wii for authentic retro gaming experience with emulators nowadays.
Physical games are not even immune to this anymore now that they require downloads. This is one of the reasons why im going pc only from now on. Even if a digital store closes on pc at least there are multiple other stores and torrents.
That’s why at least 4/5 of the games I’ve gotten over the past two years have been digital. In most cases the disc is only used as proof that you own the game, while the game itself still sits on the storage.
“The reason Nintendo has made this change has been the push for the eshop. Which is the digital distribution service for the Nintendo switch and 3DS”. RIP Wii U
Dude why didn't you install BootMii as Boot2? It's the safer thing to do! With that, you are *almost* certainly guaranteed to be able to save your wii no matter what you do to it! But your method, I am afraid, is rather unsafe! Installing WADs is very dangerous because if the file gets corrupt or the installation phase fails, you are left with a corrupted banner that will make your Wii's system menu CRASH the very moment it tries to load. It means that your Wii will blackscreen at boot right after the safety warning. And there you go, you just bricked your Wii! Priiloader will NOT save you from that, because it loads as an IOSs that depends on the System menu, so it fails to load if the menu crashes! Remember, ALWAYS install BootMii as Boot2 if you can, and A L W A Y S make a backup before anything! If your system does not support BootMii/Boot2, NEVER install a WAD you didn't test before using, for example, an emulator like Dolphin. That is why modding a wii following a video is bad: there are a lot of quirks and stuff to know before proceeding, you HAVE to understand what you're doing and get the full picture, even if it's as simple as copying files over an SD card. If you fail to do so, you get a BRICKED Wii! Sorry man, I don't want to hate on you, it's just how this stuff is: I HIGHLY recommend reading the "official" guides: wii.guide/ arikadosblog.blogspot.com/2009/05/bootmii-understand-it-before-you.html?m=1 wiibrew.org/wiki/BootMii wiibrew.org/wiki/Brick EDIT: As already said, I in no way think that this video is bad. I in fact think this video is excellent! But I strongly advice, as someone who actually modded many many Wiis, 3DSs, PS3s etc... To read all of there is to read on the topic before proceeding, as bannerbricks, trust me if you want, are more common that one might think!
@Face in the Crowd We'll the procedure shown in the video is actually correct by itself, but before proceeding with the installation I'd suggest you to read the links I posted containing various information about what is bootmii, how could you get a brick and how to prevent them. Once you have a general idea of the working of this mod, then install the homebrew channel and bootmii. If you can't install BootMii/Boot2 because your Wii is not compatible, then install Priiloader, but beware that it will not be able to protect you against banner bricks. Always make a backup of the NAND of the wii after you completed the mod and before installing any WAD. Test the titles you intend to install using, for example, dolphin (there are various methods to test integrity of WADs before risking your actual beloved console, Google is your friend).
Installing CIOS'es is really some unintuitive way if you "just want to get it done" :p I had to read on so many guides to get it right - and accidentially thought that uninstalling CIOS'es was fine - untill I realized that I had effectively wiped the oS... XD. That was some fun stuff to explain to my tech market on why my wii did no longer boot =). Ahh... the good old Wii.
@The BoneZone "he show you the exact steps in the fucking video dumbass" That's not the fucking point of my comment, dumbass. If someone does not understand what a banner brick is, they shouldn't install WADs. If someone does not understand what is bootmii, they shouldn't install it. With these mods the user is tampering with very low level parts of the system, so if something goes wrong it does so very quickly and very badly. It's not rocket science, a quick read through a couple of pages in wiibrew.org will set you off for the mod, you just have to learn. Doing stuff blindfolded following a video and not knowing why you are doing stuff is bad. Take a look at 3DS and PS3 modding forums: the first thing they tell to newcomers is to never follow videoguides, because they quickly get out of date and don't describe the full picture. Not because video creators are bad, but because it's impossible to do in a 15 minutes video. Then again, nobody holds you back. It's your console, do whatever you feel like. This is just a piece of advice from someone that actually mods consoles as a "job"
Actually, Priiloader can grant access to Homebrew Channel and you can uninstall the corrupt WAD from it. Because the Banner Brick itself occurs when Wii Menu is loaded, and Priiloader prevents that.
@@benlinlin1 My bad, I mixed stuff up. It's not banner bricks that are bad, that was only with the beta of preloader IIRC. It's IOS bricks that could be a problem, especially if it's the Sysmenu IOS (it's the IOS 80 on 4.3 IIRC but I would need to check that up, it's been a long time since the last wii mod I made). In general everything that messes up the Sysmenu could mess up preloader, but yeah it loads before banners. Not to say that preloader is bad, obiouvsly, but bootmii is just better, and if it's possible to install it, like in this case, it's always the best thing to do.

@fripp555 As I said in my post, I understand and agree with physical over digital; but are you telling me that every indie developer should release their games in physical formats? Do you know how expensive/ resources demanding this process is? The point of the eshop and Xbox arcade was to give small developers the chance to try New things without the hassle of publishing. This is not Microsoft or Nintendo's fault , so complaining about it IS useless.

See this is why I am weary of going digital. If I buy a game digital theres no guarantee I will not be able to download again thats why I prefer physical but everyone looks at me like some old fart that hates new tech.
Ikr.. sadly now even console bundles come with download codes instead of cartridges/discs.. I have always preferred physical media to digital, and always will.
Even worse is that all digital services will eventually shut down and the new services won't have always have everything the old services had. Going back to play some old game is going to become much harder especially since there's much fewer physical copies available.
Yeah, I think it's more the people who don't understand technology as much and who don't care about holding onto it indefinitely (it's just a passing fad to them) that buy digitally.
It was a friendly, happy system that made me feel good to use it. I love the little black cat that watches the position of the pointer during load screens; it's just cute little fun. 'Hardcore' gamer types think it's corny but I don't want my gaming experience to be all about cold digital toughness, or to feel like the console itself is an adversary.

R.I.P. Wii
Given the last things they did before then was the Sega CD, the 32X, Saturn and the Dreamcast, it would have sucked. Nintendo was always far more on the cutting edge of what consumers want than Sega ever was. Sonic was great for a while, but it was the only thing Sega ever cared about and Sonic was already on his way out by the time their stupid decisions doomed them. Sega had no idea what they were doing and their company was churning out duds on a regular basis without Sonic around to save them anymore, and then Sonic just got worse and worse after Sega epically failed with knowing how to produce and market consoles.
@@the-NightStar Thankfully, everyone but the Sonic team actually had their butts in gear with series like Yakuza, Bayonetta, and Persona, to name a few.
"Won" what? You say this as though there was some kind of competition. Nintendo never "competed" with anyone, they just did their own thing regardless of what others did. Whether or not any other video game makers succeeded or failed was due entirely to their own merits or faults. In fact I'd say Sega failed strictly because they were to busy trying to "compete" rather than just focus on themselves and putting out high quality products.
Wish I had found this before I'd made it through part of the process. No brick, but i kept finding tutorials that had directions off just a bit. I still got some steps I shoukd take that I havent done yet. Thank you.
I would get a switch for your son because Wii’s are getting older and they are starting to work poorly. If you buy a resaled one it will probably only last for 2 years but for a switch, theres a lot more content and it’s not going anywhere for a while! If you want, a Wii is still a great option!
OcfromCooki the Wii U is beast it just had awful marketing people need to learn to stop bumping this console just because youtubers talk about the bad marketing
@@jessescollection485 the Wii U is not a beast at all, it was underpowered from the start and didn't offer anything exciting over its competition. Its CPU is based on the PowerPC 750CL, the same CPU the Wii used which itself was evolved from the GameCube's CPU, but this time with three cores hacked together (I say "hacked together" because they are - this is evident by the fact they don't support proper multicore operation) and the console's graphics are based on the Radeon HD 4000 architecture, which was already 4 years out of date when the Wii U launched. The system has an abymsal 2GB of DDR3 RAM, of which only 1GB is actually available to games (The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has to get around this by unloading the Wii U Menu). The Wii U's failure was not just because of poor marketing - though that was definitely a factor - it's because the console offered nothing new and was underpowered despite Nintendo stating it was designed to "bring back core gamers". The Wii U had some great games developed for it, but that doesn't make the console itself good or "a beast".
Nintendo's amazing at many things, but I never buy anything from their online digital services if I can help it. This is an old issue with them, you pretty much have to accept that anything you buy for a platform from their online store is not forever and won't be automatically usable on their next platforms. It's good to know that fans have found a way around the issue, but the trouble needed to make it happen (not to mention Nintendo's own particular position on the issue), just makes it unpalatable. I don't understand how they think they win with this strategy. I bought about 200 dollars in Super Famicom games a few months ago to play old games, I wouldn't think of buying them on their digital distribution. Nintendo doesn't gain a thing from the second hand market.
That's not exclusive to Nintendo. All digital services end eventually. Some last longer but once they're down, you lose everything you paid for if you don't already it downloaded.
While I do prefer physical copies as well theres nothing wrong with digital if its done right as in being drm-free, with drm-free games you can just back them up to as many storage devices as you want which is actually safer than having a single copy on a disc or cartridge (unless you got digital backups of those of course which you should do as well))
It's sad that to play WiiWare games nowadays you are basically forced to pirate them. I really don't like to pirate games and never do in general, but when there is literally no other way to play them due to the storefront being no longer available and said games not being rereleased on other systems, I have to just sit back and say "Well no-one's making any money from these anymore and it's the publisher's fault that they are not on other systems when there is still a market for them, so I'm afraid you have left me with no choice". It's sad but true, man I hope that one day some of these exclusives get rereleased, would buy them in a heartbeat...
well the last we'll see it running from official servers, the hacking and modding community has already figured out how to revive it after the plug is pulled from the official servers. it'll be back online sometime.
Wii owners had no choice, but to buy WiiWare games digitally. Video games that were exclusive to WiiWare were never sold on physical discs like regular Wii games. They were only available for purchase as digital downloads through the Wii Shop Channel. Now that the Wii Shop Channel is being discontinued, there will be no legal way to purchase those WiiWare-exclusive games for use on a Wii. So if there are any WiiWare-Exclusive games that you'd like to play and you haven't already purchased them through the Wii Shop Channel, the only way you'll be able to play them is if you download pirated copies of those games from the Web and install them on your Wii.

This was actually a great tutorial, now I can play older games on my Wii. The setup took basically an entire evening, but it was worth it.
Modding a console is certainly giving a "dead" console a new breath of life.
Also Wii sold so much you can get them for cheap so not modding it is a waste I think
At the local goodwill, ps2 & Wii systems are $19.99, psx/ps1 are $29.99
@@RetroGamerBB but the wii can play ps1 games so just buy a wii
@@RetroGamerBB i bought my wii brick only for $6.99 lol and i found another for $9.99 snagged that up as well
I personally think the wii is a great investment if you homebrew it.

But still! Goodbye childhood memories of not going to the Wii Shop.
Only time I used it was when I was doing a system transfer to the WiiU because my Wii’s disk drive was screwed up.
This all could've been avoided if they just ported all of the WiiWare to the eShop.
That would imply some effort, or not trying to nickle and dime you for 20+-year-old games for the fifth time.
Yes true, but they wouldn’t really be wiiware anymore because they would be on another console,
@@bugnug5593 That's like saying that the NeoGeo games on the Virtual Console weren't NeoGeo games because you were playing them on the Wii.
If they were ported to the Wii U they would still be wii ware games but they wouldn't really be Ware anymore because the games are on more than just the wii. If your playing DSI ware games on the 3ds, there still DSI ware games but don't deserve to be called ware. If you go to the eshop on your 3ds you will see the section is called DSI ware, not just DSI. Anyways thanks for replying.

Nothing beats the original Wii for authentic retro gaming experience with emulators nowadays.
Physical games are not even immune to this anymore now that they require downloads. This is one of the reasons why im going pc only from now on. Even if a digital store closes on pc at least there are multiple other stores and torrents.

Sorry man, I don't want to hate on you, it's just how this stuff is: I HIGHLY recommend reading the "official" guides:
wii.guide/
arikadosblog.blogspot.com/2009/05/bootmii-understand-it-before-you.html?m=1
wiibrew.org/wiki/BootMii
wiibrew.org/wiki/Brick
EDIT: As already said, I in no way think that this video is bad.
@The BoneZone "he show you the exact steps in the fucking video dumbass"
That's not the fucking point of my comment, dumbass.

Last night i moved all of my wii shop itens to wii u thank god
You can hack the Wii u Wii mode the same way
Did the same, actually bought a used Wii U just for this lol. Ended up really enjoying Wii U.
You don’t lose games, you just can’t download anymore.
@@odaddy47 yes i know i redownloaded them
I have some vc games on my wii

Imagine a world where SEGA won...
Imagine a world where both Nintendo and SEGA kicked Sony out of competition and those instead teamed up with Microsoft.
@@hobojoe9337 You were mad when you wrote that, and I didn't read it.
IDK what to say. *Awkward*
Doin' the lords work bro...
Wish I had found this before I'd made it through part of the process. No brick, but i kept finding tutorials that had directions off just a bit. I still got some steps I shoukd take that I havent done yet. Thank you.
THX BRO... I WAS PLANNING TO BUY A WII FOR MY SON
THX
I would get a switch for your son because Wii’s are getting older and they are starting to work poorly. If you buy a resaled one it will probably only last for 2 years but for a switch, theres a lot more content and it’s not going anywhere for a while! If you want, a Wii is still a great option!
“eShop on Switch and 3DS”...the Wii U has the eShop too haha
We don't like the Wii U u know
OcfromCooki the Wii U is beast it just had awful marketing people need to learn to stop bumping this console just because youtubers talk about the bad marketing
@@jessescollection485 I actually like the Wii U. But it's not my favorite console
OcfromCooki same here I went to the launch party over here in aussie land, but the 64 and wii will always be my favourite consoles
I remember back when you needed a copy of Lego Indiana Jones in order to install homebrew onto my Wii lmao. Those were the days.
I hear it on my dsi
Although that got shut down...
Sad times.. same with mkwii online
just use wiimmfi on your wii and ds, search up wiimmfi on UA-cam there are lots of tutorials
@@ian47vr they took it down, apparently
@@RebelTrooperChris Wiimmfi is still around. wii.guide has the most solid instructions on how to get the Wii working with RiiConnect24 and Wiimmfi.
Rebel Trooper Chris it’s still available, mrbean35000vr has a tutorial how to acess it
Wiimmfi is different than Nintendo wfc and I was on it yesterday so there should be no problem.
For me personally, the best Wiiware games are:
- Gradius ReBIRTH
- Lost Wind
- Onslaught
-Bomberman Blast
- Excitebike: World Rally
Admit it, Pokemon Rumble is on that list too.
just bought a used wii...this is the most understandable tuts for softmodding the wii
has it still worked?
@@balintkatay yes,its easy
I assumed the wiishop closed a long time ago
It’s closing in January 30
Me too, I thought it had been closed last year.
i swear i tried connecting ine a few years ago and it said the store was already closed... in the uk
I thought it closed when Nintendo closed the DS online servers. Lol...
0:31 Look here.
The wii shop music is in smash ultimate music
James William no joke, it’s one of my most played tracks
They didn't call it ultimate for nothin
Super Smash Bros. Brawl also had that theme (for the Pictochat stage).
DaFro3713 same
@@shuntarofurukawa5577 Dammit, all I can hear is Danny Trejo saying that line.
Thanks Homebrew, i still can download and install wii shop software from free e shops^^
Dude I remember kicking back in 2010 playing smash on the wii:(
Those Northeast Kansas house prices are savage. Thanks for helping us here in the middle lands.
While I do prefer physical copies as well theres nothing wrong with digital if its done right as in being drm-free, with drm-free games you can just back them up to as many storage devices as you want which is actually safer than having a single copy on a disc or cartridge (unless you got digital backups of those of course which you should do as well))
your channel is so good man i love it i have subscribed
i also subscribed the wii was always one of my fave consoles

Can we download new Wiiware for our region for free?
@@seymourkrelborn4780 I don't know, they may use it for homebrew only and not use it for piracy.

whop ya wad! whop ya wad! whop ya wad on the counter!
This is a journey into money....Loadsamoney!
what’s that spell? Loadsamoney! Prob’ly.
That's why you don't buy digital games
It's a terrible injustice.
No, this is why you don't sell them. The issue here us the fact you can't buy them.
To be fair, your existing games will continue to function.
Unless they somehow get deleted. Then you're screwed.
Thank You! Just finished soft-modding my Red Wii and got it running WiiWares perfectly.
"Please hack me .com" doesn't sound too promising lol

Love this video ! Thanks for the update.
It would be awesome to find a update video on backing up your own GC games on a modded Wii.
One word: Nintendont
Hey, I know this might sound stupid but,
I watch you for few months now, your videos are really enteraining and fun to watch, if you're running out of ideas about Wii Modding, you can also do a video about WiiConnect24 replacement service and Nintendo WFC replacement - RiiConnect24 and Wiimmfi.
Also, there is a Wii Shop Channel replacement called Open Shop Channel, while it won't be able to distribute games because well, copyright - it will be able to install homebrew games/software on your SD Card and a forwarder on your Wii for it. It's still in developement.
Cheers,
KcrPL - RiiConnect24 and Open Shop Channel dev ;)
