I might have never known of Tengri if he had not done that amazing song with Dimash, "Swan Goose". He is just wonderful! His interpretation of songs and his (usually) gentle voice are such a great combination. I had never heard Mongolian throat singing before, though I had heard overtone singing. I thought they were the same until I was educated by Tengri fans. Thank you for doing this one!

Thank you Caleb for your reaction. Tengger is from Inner Mongolia and the two guys throat singing is correct, they are playing horse hair fiddles, which were traditionally made from Horse bone and the two strings made from horse hair. This song was written about the destruction of his homeland, maybe dedicated to his daughter, who died after this song was composed. He also did a concert in New York in 2001 and dedicated it to the victims of 9/11 attacks. He also plants 100 trees each year in Inner Mongolia, the last part of the song was in Mongolian where he refers to leaving nature to take its course. You will find earlier version of him singing this song, where he has long hair after his daughters death it turned white so he shaved it off. The man with the silver hair is getting upset because he is also Mongolian.

All my life (63 now), I've only listened to French and English songs, because they are my native tongues. Dimash has changed all that for me. This is the first time I hear Tengri (will have to look up Swan Goose) and I like him. I feel like I've been missing out on a lot in my life. I am opening up to new sounds, new music, amazing. Thanks Caleb.

You're right. It's Mongolian throat singing and it's done through different ways, using/manipulating the palate, throat, lips, tongue, stomach and chest to produce different sounds. Tengri has tremendous volume control (ebbing and swelling) and conveys his longing for his hometown in the song. I cried the first time I heard it (like that guy on the video wiping his eyes). I have been to Mongolia and I could picture what he was missing. Thank you for your analysis of Tengri and exposing us to different singers besides Dimash. I love Dimash dearly but there are other great singers out there whose talents need to be recognized as well. I appreciate your sensitivity to great music.

FYI, Caleb, the silver haired gentleman in the back room who gets so emotional is part of the Singer show as a Music partner. He is also from Mongolia like Tengri, probably why the song hit him so hard. This Singer year was when Dimash did the guest performance of Hello and the next thing we know he and Tengri are doing a fantastic duet....Swan Goose! Check it out if you get time. Some one has commented that Tengri does more of the old style Chinese singing, kind of folk style. Great reaction as always! ❤️ from California,🇺🇸

Thanks for another great reaction. I had the chance to see Tengri live when I lived in China a number of years ago and it was an amazing experience. I’m so glad he is preserving his Mongolian heritage and traditional singing styles. Thank you for mentioning them. This was a performance of his own composition. The pain and the emotion come from how the Mongolian highlands described in the song have been decimated by war and occupation. The heavy distortion is on the word “love” when he sings “I love you my homelands.” All of his music proceeds give something back for their restoration. Thanks again for your vocal insights and analysis.

this performance reduces me to tears every time. can't believe i just openly cried like a baby.
it's just the combination of his presence; warm, inviting, comforting, in conjunction with his insanely good volume control & technique, as well as the obvious passion with which he sings.
    truly an epic singer.

  • @paulopinto9951

That was actrually throat singing! I believe the older guy was using vocal fry while the younger was manipulating overtones. The distortion and volume control of Tengger are crazy, and he is able to do that at 60 years old, which is incerdible if you ask me! This song was composed by him for his hometown and deceased daughter. Speaking of Hua Chenyu, he made his own version of this song, please react to it ua-cam.com/video/VrJGgiVPEBE/v-deo.html

Caleb, glad to hear you are feeling better!👍
Amazing isn't he? Happy you have finally gotten around to hearing this. It's so hauntingly beautiful and diverse. I cried the first time I heard this and even though I did not understand the words, his emoting style of singing did what music should do, which is to "draw you in and make the listener feel the colors and not just see them."
I discovered both Dimash & Tengri at the same time performing a song together and although admittedly I got sucked into the "Black Hole of the Dimash Universe!"💥 I have never forgotten this particular performance. Both Dimash & Tengri have a way of transporting you to another place and time. (Not trying to sound like a "Nutter" but figuratively speaking!)🙃 But unlike Dimash who is described as singing like an "Alien" from out of this world", Tengri has been described as being very connected and grounded to this world while singing in such a way as to give the planet a voice if it only had one. An example of this is his use of Tuvan / Mongolian style of throat singing in the Intro that emoted very primal "of the earth" images through sound. And then throughout the song using both the "ebb & flow" of his phrasing & tone. Through his unique vocal styling he tells a story describing "Heaven on Earth" with no need to look anywhere else to find his bliss because if not now then eventually he will have it all again someday. ('Just let nature take its course and all will be just as it was".) His "Love", his "Home, his "Homeland. #ForLoveOfCountry #Patriotism Truly Unique, Beautifully Heartfelt & Sublime! 🤗 Hear both Dimash & Tengri perform "Swan Goose" here: ua-cam.com/video/8LEXQctl0Q0/v-deo.html Enjoy!
I apologize for the long comment but it seems that once I get going I kind of get "lost in the sauce!"🤔 Thank you so much for your continued insightful critiques and comments. Looking forward to hear what's next. Til then be well. - J💕

Tengri sings from his soul. This song is one he originally wrote and performed decades ago- it made him famous in mainstream China. The sounds are coming from such a visceral place. Combined with the lyrics of loving and wanting to preserve his homeland of Inner Mongolia, it becomes such an artful, powerful performance.

The version of Hua Chenyo is much softer and maybe that's why he is so impressed by Tangri's version. Hua had to sing this song in a show called Next where the singer is challenged to sing a song (usually old or weird songs) having only 24hs to prepare it. His version is so different, but also beautiful.

Hello!! What a beautiful reaction! The truth is that I do not listen to many songs of Tengri, but this song in particular from the first day I heard it, it reached my heart. His way of singing and the strength of his voice, continue to move me, every time I hear the song again. I live in a culture very different from that of Tengri and in fact I don't know much about it, but this music takes me on a trip through those places and it is a beautiful sensation. It's funny but at some point I feel like it's a song that expresses a noble struggle.

Tengri is 58 years old well known singer in China. He is Mongol from inner Mongolia of China. He wrote this song in 1997 to express how much he miss and love his home town. His daughter passed away at a very young age due to illness so this song is for her as well. In the beginning there was traditional Mongolian throat singing. Some traditional Mongolian instrument was used in this performance like horsehead fiddle

I'm happy to see you react to this. It's more than a little outside of the mainstream of Western style music and approach to singing that takes advantage of other aspects of human anatomy to great effect. This, and another of his songs that he sang with Dimash, are very much my favorite of his. In any event, in all his performances you hear a fully mature musical artist.

Although the lyrics is talking about love of homeland, you can feel his pain in the song. In Tengri's memory there is a view of scenic hometown grassland, which however has gone forever. When he perform this in 2018 again, the style changed. And there seems 2nd level of pain. I think it is the pain of lost her loved daughter few years ago. Thanks for your reaction. Love that this show brings in different traditional cultural singers. This was a joy to see this type of vocal singing. This show has few more singers that you get to hear traditional Chinese operatic styles of singing. As for Hua, you can bet he jumped at the chance of learningTenger's technique. He said he was there to learn from other singers. Tenger taught him the fluting technique and used it in one of his songs during the show, per Hua's interview. Both showed admiration for their artistry to each other. Tenger sings a cool rock version in another performance during this show. Hua also covered his song Heaven on the Next show, where the challenger picked this song for Hua to rearrange in 24 hours.

It was the big shock during the Singer 2018. Thank you so much for this reaction !
Tengri, national treasure in China, was a former rocker. Today 60 years old, he is, with Liu Huan (winner of Singer 2019), one of the great pioneers of modern music in China.

In this song, of which he is the author, he evokes his beloved country, Inner Mongolia, today ravaged by industrialization. This is a matter of great emotion for Mongolians and Chinese who fear ecological disasters.

Hua Chenyu also sang this song, in her own way. Angela Chang and Huo Zun too. It's a classic.
Other Mongolian singers also amazed us :

It's the best song of Tengri. The others are not bad, but "more poppy". Also nothing against "pop and folclore mix". Tengri is still awesome and all his music is very beautiful!! But "Heaven" has more of those unusual traditional parties than other songs of him.

I read in a comment on another video that the land in Inner Mongolia where Tengri (aka Tengger) lived as a boy has now been destroyed by "development" and that he has spent recent years on a project planting trees in the hope that it will be replenished. This could explain the intense emotion he expresses here. Plus, someone else mentioned the song is basically an invitation to his deceased daughter to join him in his version of Heaven - the land he knew as a boy.
I also love this performance ua-cam.com/video/p3a85ABpjJo/v-deo.html - Tengri reunited his old band for this one - there's a bit of an explanation at the beginning with old photos of him and the band. I believe the song is "Start Over", but I couldn't find any accurate lyrics I was sure of so I'm not sure what it's about, but it's a lot of fun to watch.

Though you might find it interesting too.^^ It's so different to what we're used to hear in the "west". Like you said, it's like a mix between modern and Mongolian trad singing and I had heard Mongolian / Tibetan throat singing before, but never in this way. I like how much dynamics he has!^^
I didn't know there were different "schools" of throat singing! I'm going to check that out! Thanks for the info and for this video :D

Isn't easy for us in the West to discount remarkable singers just because they don't fit our "mold?" That's what I love about the Singer Series! It brought us -- particularly me -- new artists from around the world that we would never have otherwise known about! And I can only tell you now -- a year removed -- that my life has been changed by the likes of Hua Chenyu, Terry Lin, Dimash, and Jason, etc. Again my life has never been the same! Thank you Caleb for reaching out of your personal comfort zone and taking on these Reactions! You rock, brother! Even if it's from Down Under! Ha!

Wow. Great song by Tengri. You will be amazed if you react to the Hu band, which is a new rock band of Mongolia. The band just successfully finished its tour in Europe and soon will start touring in the USA by mid September of this year. I can't wait to see your another good reaction to the Hu band. Please first react to Wolf Totem. Thank you :-)

Whoomei the Mongolia sing style, make me feel like when people is dying, an old shaman use this voice to call your soul back, and say farewell to those people who love you. A music professor said that it's not everyone can sing whoomei. The sound of whoomei is pronounced by a voice lower than low C. I'm not a professional musician, just heard it from a TV show. Great reaction video btw.

Tengri is from Inner Mongolia (CN) and I'm glad you reacted to him. He has beautiful performances at the Singer 2018 and became great friend of Hua.
Because of Tengri I discovered a Mongolian Hard Folk Rock , The Hu, presentaly they are on tour through Europe and being very successful. With them you can hear that full throat singing technique, for now they have 2 MV and as I like hard rock (AC/DC, Metallica and , and 😂😂) I sure like them . Lovely reaction 💞💞

Mongolians still speak sky as "Tenger" just in all day normal speeches, Tengri is an old mongolian writing pronounciation. Respect our great singer, inner mongolian. Beginning shows, the traditional mongolian khuumii and horse fiddles.

I love how he combines various styles of traditional Chinese singing techniques. He really goes hardcore on the yin yang philosophy of Chinese musicality. I love the finesse he has with combining so many different techniques and overlapping them. Just the way he weaves the crescendo and diminuendo together between phrases sounds like a gigantic vibrato with the vibrato he has as he sings. It's really something amazing.
It's awesome how he sings just like they'd play an ancient string instrument, and in those few instances of sounding like a wind instrument.

This song is basically a plea to let his homeland of Inner Mongolia to recover from the industrialism which has ruined it. Hua Chenyu has previously done a cover of this song and said that he thought that Tengri should have won that week. I think at the beginning one person was doing throat singing, and the other was doing harmonic overtone singing done by manipulating the tongue and mouth cavity. There is a European woman on UA-cam who has demonstrations and lessons."Polyphonic Overtone Singing - Anna-Maria Hefele" (I'll give the link separately)

    • @CalebColesMusic

Ugh, this song makes me tear up every time. Try reacting to The Hu's Yuve Yuve Yu or Wolf Totem. It's Mongolian throat singing + folk instruments + metal. Like Heaven, their songs express love for homeland, but in more metal style. Weirdly addictive, even if you're not into metal. Their videos have subtitles btw.
