    The way you handle problems and setbacks is something to look up to, remaining collected while your project hits yet another bump in the road is key. great work man!

    Yeah, great to see you back on the Tacoma! It's always the little things that hold you back on completing a project. Glad you are better and getting back on your projects, curious to see how the Tacoma runs. I hope the starter gets here soon. Welcome back!

    Nice work, bummer on the starter issue. Couple pointers on seal installs and trans bolts. On seals when you have the space, I always use a short length of 2x4. Use either side large flat part or on edge. Go across the seal, it allows the seal to sit flat against the surface it’s being drive in on. Use a heavier hammer as the first tap will begin to seat the seal. A lot better than chasing the seal around the circle trying to get it to begin to seat. On trans bell housing installs, invest in a 36 inch extension. I bought one off a tool truck it’s 3/8 on the socket side and 1/2 on the ratchet side. You could go 1/2 on both ends also reduces flex in the extension. Now that you have that lift it’s easier to stand at the back of the trans and see better angles when stabbing bolts through holes. Also when removing bell housing bolts your able to use an air impact. That extension will also keep your Hands safe and away from trans and other sharp things on vehicles. That’s how we do it in the shops.

    I started watching this channel with this build, so it is awesome to see it almost running! With that said, I’ve been watching all these videos titled “diesel swap” and still did a double take when you put diesel in the tank 😂

    Good call on the GL-4. The GL-5 lube has sulfur based extreme pressure additive that actually binds to the surface of steel parts. It forms an extremely hard layer on the part to prevent them from contacting. That is great in hypoid gears, but the brass syncro rings will be eroded by the extreme pressure additive. They do not get the coating adhered to them, so on a molecular level, the lube acts as an abrasive to the soft brass. With that said, there are GL-5 lubes that do not use the sulfur based additive, and are then "yellow metal compatible". Royal Purple is one of them, and the only lube my local auto parts stores carry that is safe for the trans in my swap....
    As for the Adapter, take it to a local machine shop! Thats a 5 minute job on the lathe to cut that shoulder! I'll even do it for free if you want to ship it and the starter to utah!

      Thanks for the GL5 lesson haha i never really understood why they say no gl5 in these transmissions! They actually sent out a new adapter and starter. Check back in a bit for todays video, i found a work around in the mean time!

    Just a question! Why did you choose the VW diesel and not the GM Duramax diesel?

    Good to see you're healed up enough to get back on the project!
    One other trick I've been using to get the tranny back on my motorcycle: Get a couple bolts the same size as the tranny bolts but longer, cut the heads off and grind slots in the end so you can screw them into the engine (or adapter plate in your case). Then you can slide the tranny on those bolts and adjust angle and spline engagement independently without having to wrestle all that at the same time. Still, you got the tranny on in about 8 seconds - that's pretty good 😃.
    One question - where do you find your donor cars? I'm working on doing a similar project, and have looked at Pick-a-Part places for the engine etc. but there's too many issues there. I've looked in Flakeslist for whole cars, but well, Flakeslist - nuff said.

    How much would you have to be paid to do a 4wd swap on a 1999 4runner 2.7l w a donor car? :D

    My darn $150 1987 f150 4x4 302 manual iv been driving for 13yrs never left stranded (on gods life) has a bad rear main seal, once a yr i have to drain the transfer case due to fluid level being a lil to high! Lol.. Edit: To be honest i think its the yearly trips to Pomeroy Wa to get wood from the property.. the old Ford weights 8860lbs when crossing the Lampson Crane yrd scale in the Port of Pasco... That's 4k+ load!

    Hey man I have watched most of your videos and you have inspired me to do a swap in my 1993 4x4 toyota. however I am about ready to fire this thing up and my starter doesn't fit. The starter hits the rear outlet from the turbo manifold where the muffler is supposed to bolt up. Did you use a smaller starter? of is your turbo manifold higher up?

    • @austinniemela
      @austinniemela  3 роки тому

      Yes that is a common issue with the stock turbo. If you use a bhw manifold and turbo it puts the turbo much higher and better clearance!

      Love your attitude to setbacks! Being the ONLY person I can find who has done a VW 1.8t 20v swap, I've had a few myself (as we've spoke about).... even though I think my swap is pretty tidy, your work is another level! Oh.... and just as a side note, the VW clocks actually fit very nicely and with your skills could fit perfectly....I still did an imob delete, but we can't get hilux clocks with a tach over here so it just made sense😉

    I was kinda wondering why you went with a non US company especially when we have doomsday diesel that makes high quality stuff as well located in the US. Not that the company you went with isn't high QUALITY, just the issue of if there IS a problem, turn around especially right now is horrible.
