Fun fact: When Dan Jones mentions that Henry has been on crusade, he is not talking about the crusades in the Holy Land, which by this time were over. He is referring to the Northern Crusades in which the Teutonic knights fought the pagan Lithuanians. Henry fought alongside the Teutonic knights in these campaigns, particularly the Siege of Vilnius.
Lithuania was already a Christian country by that time - however the Teutons took their supposed "paganity" as an excuse to plunder the local population and expand their wealth & territories. Most of the Granduchy's lands were Greek-Orthodox, while only the Lithuanian "heartlands" remained pagan, but by that time, they already got baptized, with ONE exception - Samogitia - and Samogitia was strategically important for the Teutons. Samogitia would get baptized later on - by 1413 - and not BY THE SWORD which was the usual "teutonic" way of doing things (SLAUGHTERING the local population and taking over their lands, while inviting pesant farmers usually from the Germanic lands & cities, i.e. GERMANIZATION of the locals) but "BY THE BOOK" - i.e. through baptism and evangelisation of the country.

If anyone has just watched this series let me tell you: The Plantangents by Dan Jones is awesome and worth a read, it covers them all, not just the Kings here.

It's kinda amusing to watch Richard II threaten Henry Bolingbroke only to be confused by the fact that Henry isn't afraid of him anymore.
Henry was a battle hardened warrior. I would not be surprised if he truly wasn't afraid of his cousin in any way.

This series is riveting and educational.
Each program moved along they neither bogged down nor slowed to a snail’s pace that would have caused the viewer to lose interest.
Dan Jones is superb in his presentation.
This is how history should be taught. The re-enactments were brilliant, especially the French dialogue .
Just to note, when Arundel showed up late at Anne's funeral, he not only didn't apologize, he told the king that he had to leave early because he had something 'important' (implying _more_ important) to attend to. Arundel had been a constant irritation for some time, but this insult was too much. He richly deserved the decking he got.

For anyone interested I'd recommend Dan Jones' books wholeheartedly. Both Wars of the Roses and The Plantagenets are cracking good reads.
His book about The Templars is pretty good as well.
I just purchased 3 of his books and can't wait to read them.

I am Czech, just as Richard II's wife Anne of Bohemia (Anna Česká) was. I do not know why, but it is indeed intriguing to realise that there once lived a woman of my nationality who became Queen of England.

If George RR Martin did model Joffery Baratheon in part on Richard II it was a brilliant decision, I see a lot of Richard in Joffery.
Marcus Drake I also see Edward of Westminster in him. His father was King Henry the sixth and during Edwards life his father was stuck in the English civil war known as the Wars of the Roses. Edward had ordered two knights heads be cut off and his mother Margret of Anjou reminds me of Cersei Lannister.

That scene with Anne's funeral always gets me. She was a sweet girl and was a good influence, but maybe her death was a mercy, she never had to watch her husband become a tyrant...
"Anyone with a drop of royal blood..." Bolingbroke had the exact same level of royal blood as Richard II. They were both sons of sons of Edward III. It wasn't a distantly related upstart who usurped the throne. The precedent Bolingbroke started was that closely-related cousins, patrilineally descended from Edward III, could vie for the throne. When the Yorkists threw out the Lancastrians, they were also direct patrilineal (and matrilineal) descendants of Edward III.
Bolingbroke wasn't the heir apparent. He was the son of the 3rd son of Edward III. There was a young boy who was the grandson of Edward III's 2nd son who was the true heir.
Bolingbroke was the Son of John of Gaunt.

Never said that Bolingbroke was or wasn't the heir apparent. I'm merely pointing out that Bolingbroke had exactly the same degree of royal descent, birth order aside, that Richard II did. This video's dodgy script gives the impression that Bolingbroke came out of nowhere and barely had any claim. That's just not so. Bolingbroke had zero legitimate claim - but in terms of royal descent, he was at least qualified to be in the running for throneship.
As a grown man i now love history, but i think school ruined my own history for me (english history) all i remember is tudors and the war of the roses etc. and in very little detail. Even now i love history it has taken me years to even give english history a chance, which i did with this doc. Its done so bloody well its got me into it now, so thanks timeline, you are awesome.

A lot of Game of Thrones is a based on real medieval history, except real medieval history is infinitely more complex and interesting tbh. The throne in GoT technically never even leaves the same family in the entire series, while in real life, the throne of England changed hands between at least 4 families (cadet branches) in the 14th and 15th centuries.
These 4 documentarys were the greatest, I learned so much about the history of England....I hope they make more like this with the same host!

middle ages was a savage time and for the most part this was it with a lid on it since religion meant there were certain ways of doing things and the law of the land helped but take all that away and it would be this over and over again

GOT is loosely based on The War Of The Roses. It's a small part of this series. The same channel has a documentary on that period that's as good as this one.

No, the Middle Ages were not a “savage time.” That has been thoroughly debunked by now. It is no more violent than any other century other than the Pax Americana and Pax Britannica.
I thought this version explained in more detail how events transpired over the later videos done.The way it’s choreographed with a French to English translation really depicts how it must’ve been.
One of my favorite dynasties. Right up there with the Habsburgs, Tudors, Stuarts, Bourbons, Medicis, and Borgias. Love these documentaries, by the way. Excellent.

No, Joffrey was worse. At least Richard had a soft spot at times.
There's no shortage of tyrannical rulers throughout history, Joffrey is probably a mix of several of them.

İt's strange how John of Gaunt just gets a simple passing mention in all this when in retrospect he is one of the most important figures in English history.
I totally agree and they dont even mention Edmund Langley (John of Gaunts other younger brother but who was older then Gloucester and he was the Duke of York) and what makes it a shame is Richard II when he left the country, he left his Uncle Edmund of Langley in charge of the country while he was away, so that is who Henry Bolingbroke/Henry IV had to face when he decided to go for the crown when he invaded. I think Edmund let his nephew Henry Bolingbroke just take the throne with very little convincing but it still would be interesting to get yo know how that conversation and discussion went.
From the rise of Henry II to the end of the Wars of the Roses, the Plantagenet line had 17 separate coronoations, though two of those- Henry VI and Edward IV- were crowned twice. 17 (or 15) kings in 300 years means a new ruler roughly every 20 years.
I feel the line ended with Richard II.
While Bolingbroke had the Plantagenet blood, he was still Gaunt's (and not the Black Prince's) son and therefore a new line has started.
Even Henry ViiI has Plantagenet blood going back to three of Edward II's sons (Lionel of Antwerp, John of Gaunt and Edmund of Langley), so a line has to be drawn somewhere.
I've really enjoyed watching this 4 part series. Very ell done, settings, the gorgeous castles, even the narrator is engaging. Thank you Timeline WHD!

Why did this series skip most of the good kings of the dynasty? I mean it's fun watching a documentary on the terrible ones, but my favorite episode of the series is the first one, which focused on one of the best English monarchs, Henry II.

I wondered why they didn't include Richard I, John (especially considering John was the reason Magna Carta came about) , Edward I, Edward III.
Well Richard I was hardly in England during his ten year reign but the most probable reason is Richard I, John, Edward longshanks, Edward III are covered so extensively in the media that they don't need to be covered here.
Title is Britain's bloodiest dynasty. So it's kinda expected that they skip the un-"bloodiest" dynasts.

Amazing how two people can read the same history and come up with such different perspectives. Richard II was a tragedy, not a monstrosity. At least by the standards of the time.
Shakespeare's Richard II is a tragedy, the real Richard of Bordeaux was actually a spoiled brat with no brakes. Nobody told him at a critical age how to take counsel and compromise. And that went of the rails at later age.

Rachael Williams the war of the roses was a part of the Plantagenet history. Richard the third who was killed at Bosworth field was the last of the Plantagenet monarchs

john lewis -- Like it or not, Richard II is usually considered as the last of the Plantagenet kings. Considering that the Lancastrians and Yorks were such a sharp break from the previous monarchs, especially from the genealogical standpoint, it makes sense.
I loved this documentary! I don't know enough about our history and get mixed up with who ruled when. Will keep watching these! Excellent presenter/narrator

I love how they used some of the same actors and tried to disguise them as different characters. For examples: in this episode the priest praying behind Richard is Henry I from the first part. Isabella`s brother in the 3rd part is also a french noble in an earlier part. And King John in the first part is shown as Henry III`s Lusignan whisperer. An amazing documentary overall and very very well narated. Bravo!

Everyone needs to remember, as he says from the beginning, that this is history of these kings as HE sees them. There are indeed a lot of facts, but when it comes to the details and drama and reasoning, it is his opinion (And producers opinions) as to what was going on in their minds and all

After Richard Lionheart/Richard I, the 2nd Plantagent king died without any legitimate children the crown went to his youngest brother who became King John I, but they had a brother named Prince Geoffrey who was younger than King Richard I and older than King John I. Now Geoffrey died before Richard I but he had a legitimate son named Arthur and if we are gonna talk about the crown passing legitimately within the Plantagent dynasty, then after Richard I died the next King should have been his nephew Arthur and Not his younger brother John. But John seized the crown, I believe with support from his mother and then captured and had his nephew Arthur killed.
@Hornyshark I never doubted that by John taking the crown instead of Arthur that it wasnt passed down within the Plantagenet Dynasty. All I'm saying is the narrator made it seem like that Henry IV/Bolingbroke was the first one within the Plantagenet Dynasty to usurp the crown from another member in the Plantagenet Dynasty, but I think I disagree bc John usurped it from his nephew Arthur, but as u said it still was a Plantagent family member taking the crown bc the Plantagent dynasty didnt end until Richard III died in the battle of Bosworth against Henry Tudor/Henry VII.
The 14 Plantagenet rulers were:
1) Henry II - 1st Platagent King
2) Richard I/Richard Lionheart - son of Henry II
3) John I - younger brother of Richard I and youngest son of Henry II
4) Henry III - son of John I
5) Edward I/Edward Longshanks - son of Henry III
6) Edward II - son of Edward I/Edward Longshanks
7) Edward III - son of Edward II
8) Richard II - grandson of Edward III and son of Edward the Black Prince(who died before his father Edward III. And was the oldest son of Edward III to live to adulthood)
9) Henry IV/Henry Bolingbroke - usurped the crown from Richard II. Was the grandson of Edward III and was the son of John of Gaunt who was the 3rd oldest son of Edward III to live to adulthood.
10) Henry V - son of Henry IV/Henry Bolingbroke
11) Henry VI - son of Henry V
12) Edward IV - usurped the crown from Henry VI. Was a descendant from both Edward III's 2nd oldest son to live to adulthood Lionel Antwerp(descendant from the female line) and 4th oldest son to live to adulthood Edmund York (descendant from the male line)
11 again) Henry VI - supporters won him back his crown
12 again) Edward IV - won his crown back.
13) Edward V - was declared King but was never crowned King and he was the son of Edward IV
14) Richard III - younger Brother of Edward IV, usurped crown from his nephew Edward V and died in the Battle of Bosworth and was the last King of the Plantagenet dynasty.
There would have been a crisis about whether he is Arthur I or Arthur II. Kid had to go.
I thought that I really knew this history. HOLY MOLY! The details from minute mark 42:00 until the end are chilling. I now fully understand how the "Split" of the Plantagenet Dynasty occurred. I'm pretty sure that I am a descendant of these people through the Lancastrian side. I will always be fascinated these people and their lives.

Now I know why the english hate the french.
Because in many ways, the English are -or rather were- the French.
The histories and commonality between the English and French are inexpexpirably linked. In many eras there were few distinctions. Plantagenet is agnlisized Occitian French for yellow flower. And in modern times they were allies in some of the greatest conflicts in human history. This definitely should not be a hatred.

@@faro717 Not at all. The royals and the nobles yes, but the English people are English (of British and Anglo-Saxon stock).
An enjoyable documentary, but it left many details uncovered. For example, John of Gaunt's (who was Henry Bolingbroke's father) role as senior nobleman in the land was barely mentioned. I would say that Richard was the king as long as he had his uncle's support. The whole Appellant crisis started when John was out of the country, and only his return saved Dickon from deposition. Nevertheless Richard detested and feared the House of Lancaster, and this fear eventually became the reason of his fall. Stealing Henry Bolingbroke's inheritance was a very stupid thing to do.

The guy who played Richard ll, portrayed the Duke of Buckingham on Dan Jones other series, Britains Bloody Crown.

The guy who played Gloucester here played Somerset in Britain's Bloody Crown. The woman who played Eleanor of Aquitaine played Margaret Beaufort in Britain's Bloody Crown. The woman who played Isabella of France played Elizabeth Woodville in Britain's Bloody Crown. Need I go on? It's clear that the same production worked on both of these series'.
