It looks like common sense doesn't exist with "experts" anymore. Who could allow upgrading to an LED that produces a slim beam of light with output of a pocket flashlight. The original light lens produced a large surface area of light that was much more obvious and distinct. This LED is dangerously unnoticeable.
Mew island lighthouse off the county down coast had the biggest fresnal lens on the world it has recently been taken out and placed in a horrible metal structure to display it in Belfast while the lighthouse has changed to much weaker led light and is being allowed to decay .
@ralphlewis1 I know what you mean. What i also really like about your video is how you've shown the difference between the two lights. It's a shame the fresnel lens is no longer in operation (Although is isn't the original one, which was much much bigger) but i guess throughout history, lighthouses have always been developing. Different fuel sources, going from coal to various oils, gasses and then electricity, with automation too. I suppose this change is just another advancement in technology.
LED is not as elegant as a 35 watt incandescent and the rotating lens, sure, but a lot less maintenance. I imagine the naysayers were there when it went from whale oil to electric. Diesel trains are not as elegant as steam but a lot easier to work with. Time moves on but it looks like they kept the structure.
@@ralphlewis1 well the people making the choices could have just replaced the light to led abd kept the lense turning and kept the lighthouse going now its like a marker boy up on a piller
They call it progress, but in my view it's one giant leap backwards.

It seems kind of sad to reduce such a hustoric building with gorgeous lenses to an led flasher.
@WorldWideLighthouses Thank you. it is always rewarding to receive a favourable comment..
Changeover to LED, this is effectively saying - ruining the lighthouse.

You could have put an LED inside that lens and kept some amount of integrity, this is just a shame.
Yes just swop to led
you would still have to maintain the rotational drivers that can fail and a lot of other old equipament thats going to fail soon.
thanks for the 'enlightening' video on the procedure. well documented! =)
That's a beautiful site
Just 35W Metal halide? Thats just about car headlights!
Strange color temperature for metal halide

Its a shame that beautiful light got decommissioned. Could have been retrofitted with cheaper components.
Very informative video.
Great Video!
As usual it’s money before lives in this world we live , and it’s just getting worse
Why not just swop the halogen to led
Trinity House controls and specifies everything.

Fresnel Lens Lighthouse 😭😭😭😭
The Vanishing brought me here. #AmazonVideo

Congratulations. Now you have turned your lighthouse into garbage.
Sad...
