@mbox314 true! And it will go back up, it is only temporary until the lens room is restored from all the rust and masonry failure.

Actually all the iron is so rusted and cracked the whole lens room needs to be removed and metal recast before it can be reassembled and replaced back in the tower. It would be irresponsible to leave the lens up there until the room is fixed!

That is a shame, those lenses belong in the lighthouse and not in some visitor center on the ground.

They finally plan to return it up to the lighthouse lens room this year! $18 million to restore the lighthouse and allow the public back in! :D

Chance Brothers based in Smethwick in the Uk Manufactured Fresnel lenses around the world. They rolled the glass for the Crystal Palace in London the houses of Parliament and the Whitehouse. They were best known for lighthouse lens manufacturing...

So, why was the lens removed in the first place? What replaced it?

    • @SeaSurfnBird

It was removed in 2011 to protect it from the failing tower should anything happen to it. Also it was partially restored by professional lighthouse lens crew. They also wanted to keep it on site but allow the public to see it and raise money for the tower restoration. Now $18 million is earmarked for the tower restoration and returning the lens back to the lens room. :D

I'm not sure what you mean by chance? It is a First Order Fresnel Lens built in Paris France.

+Wizzle. Thanks so much for replying. So, there's a Brass plate on this thing?...I have to be sure. It's proving difficult to find them. There's lots of tv shows on the BBC that show lighthouses...but do they ever state where they were manufactured ?NOOOO! I get excited... then crestfallen. I'm waiting to get into the Archives to do some research so I can pinpoint every lighthouse lens made by Chance Brothers. We want to pair lighthouses from around the world with Schools in the area from where they were manufactured in the UK and share their stories. Stories from the coast shared with stories from the manufacturer. It's a beautiful thing! ;)

Uh-oh Darlin, I wasn't confirming that this lens was infact made by Chance Bros... I honesty don't know. I was replying to someone who was questioning your initial question. I don't think the other person understood that you were asking about the manufacturer. Very very cool that you are interested and I wish I could help. I'll see if I can't find out anything and comment back!!!
