Well glad you finally did it. Always a sense of accomplishment when we do things we've wanted to try for a while. Not your best work you say... but still pretty damn cool. Can't wait for the next build and tunes to show the performance.
I like the pencil guitar, it may have just been that the weight or the sturdiness of the body gave you the confidence to hit the strings harder and better.

Styrofoam has grat tone propertie there is video on yt where a guy builds panel speakers out of styrofoam and several different wood kinds and styrofoam was quiet sucefull at the test its not the best but thera are worse wood kinds out there

I like them all. The foam has a soft reverberation. The regular guitar has the sharp warm, but clear sound. The pencil has a nice sharp, but dense feeling to it. I'm not a musician. That's just how it sounds to me.
I was going to post exactly this! I am listening on Yamaha HS8s and you can absolutely tell that the styrofoam guitar has a LOT more low end. Yes, please try making a styrobass!

Yes, and the painted styrofoam rocks on the 60s Star Trek show looked like real rocks. It's not suprising to the rest of us that can't see through paint.
I was surprised with how smooth and soft the foam guitar was. It is my favorite of the 3. It sounds so soft and delicate. Like floating on a cloud. I would definitely buy one at a reasonable price! Great job bro!

well the mex sounded best in my opinion. the thing i thought about is the characteristic attack from the bridge tele pickup, which i couldn't hear at all, they both just kinda sounded like the softer neck pickup. it did however work quite well for that John Mayer neon bit you played in the end.
Maybe make the wood that the neck bolts to a bit longer going down the back and run the strings up through that one peice. Might the the string tension preasure out of the foam... I dunno... Still cool idea.. Rock on!
This was classic! I could hear all 3, unique tones & I actually prefer the insulation foam tone due to the low mids. This knocks the 'mahogany' foam & the 'maple' foam right into the water!

The material you use to make a guitar makes a big difference. Maybe not noticed right away by ear, but there is a difference. Wood tonality matters on electric guitars.
I listened without watching (reading the comments) and I could not hear when he switched over. Then again I'm not using monitor headphones or anything. But it is definitely alright and passable.

All three guitars sound different, I prefer the sound of the pencil body but, the foam does sound good.
The foam sounds "soft", the telecaster is a bit "punchier" and the pencil body is the punchier!! Nothing bad in all 3 bodies :) just different tones

Not by any means cheap. The 6 foot length of foam costs around $150 and fiberglass and the resign are expensive too. Wood would be cheaper

Yep. The foam is more warm and bassy. But the mid to high frequencies kinda get lost.

Yep. That the true key to making a decent electric, as per Les Paul. Need that solid piece to anchor the strings to.

Tarsious Munalem - early Teles were made of pine. It dents easily so they switched to alder or ash.
