Wow this explains a lot. My teacher kept telling me to open my mouth wider, but that was actually creating MORE tension for me. I think it's the space in the throat that we need to be more worried about, not the size of the mouth opening. Thanks for addressing these misconceptions!
It's good to see that finally someone mentions that wide open jaw doesn't mean huge sound. What's more it's easier to get more twang and volume if there's less space in the mouth. Great explanation and tips as always. I'm waiting for 'belting tips' video :)
Thankyou! I was just thinking about this the other day when I was opening my mouth wider to get the high notes in a warmup and noticed that my throat seemed more constricted in doing so. Yet choir conductors are still telling kids to open their mouths wider to get more volume.
Absolutely loved it, I have a terrible tension problem in my neck and jaw (it might have to do with an anatomical problem either way) so this was tremendously helpful (:
So we keep the jaw very similar to resting mouth position. Thank you so much for this video. My voice sounds way better now and that's important to me because I will be a worship leader soon. God bless you Dr. Dan.
Dr Dan! you are Amazing! thank you so much! Every one of your videos that I have watched thus far, have helped me so much!As I mentioned before, singing is my passion! you have helped me more than you could ever know!
This clears up soooo much. Ive struggled struggled struggled to sing with an open throat and wide mouth- all while attempting to alleviate my jaw tension. My natural tendency is to have tightness in the throat and jaw which means I have no forward placement and I sound constricted. The more Ive focused on this the worse it has gotten. I have been looking for an exercise that helps this and the pinky thing just may be my ticket. Thank you!
Today i had my very first test-lesson with an vocal Coach (here in switzerland). She told me to drop my jaw and making an O-shape mouth for an AH- Vowel (usualy i did the "biting a small apple" thing). I had a lot of Tension in my cheeks doing that. I always trying to place my tongue low and pressing it slightly to my lower front teeth (nice roundish shape). But she told me to make some sort of an L-Shape, so that the tongue totaly lies in the bottom of my mouth, but i get the Feeling im joking the Sound in the back of my throat... even she was very Kind, i don`t think i`m going to her again :-/
Why do we need to drop out jaws a little more when singing higher notes, even though the lower the jaw, the narrower the space in the back of the mouth?
Sir my jaw automatically shake when i smile now problm is big my mouth is close then also my jaw shake iam very nervese any solution? My selh happy singh plss tell me
Widening the mouth horizontally makes your larynx rise, doesn't it? Every classical teacher I've met advocates a relaxed jaw, dropped vertically, and every singer I've seen that opens the mouth horizontally, as though smiling, sound and look tense and especially their higher register becomes rather sharp and unpleasant.
+Dr Dan's Voice Essentials i never widen my mouth unless I need to but always drop my jaw. It’s annoying because it sounds better like that. Just aches.

How do some singers open their mouth efficiently then?
One question: what is better, Jaw retracted back in or pushed out? Usualy i retracted my jaw slightly. But the Coach told me to push it out...?
I think neutral.
Dr Dan, Can a wobbly jaw( vibrato ) occur because of singing with less jaw tension
Jean - Pierre Davids, the following video about vibrato may prove helpful - ua-cam.com/video/xajZCQid-VI/v-deo.html

The acoustic values of the higher notes will often require a slight dropping of the jaw.
Thanks, i have many problem to speak, my voice is breathy and weak...this exercise may help me ...
You're welcome Miguel Martinez. Thanks for watching.
a good example singer is the vocalist from Radwimps Band.... when he sings his relaxed

My singing teacher wants me to drop my jaw really low. And the annoying thing is when I did, it worked amazingly but hurt like a bitch! Need helpppp
Talk to your teacher about this...the jay needn't be kept wide all the time.
