    The idea that creating things (whether or not they are any good) is the way to build your creativity skills is spot on. Which is why no amount of information in your head does you any good without action applying that knowledge. Hence the expression "Just get out there and do something." Great video! I definitely have gained tips for improving my creative process.

    • @stevenbridges
      @stevenbridges  6 років тому

      Really glad it helped! Totally. The information HELPS but it's not the whole picture. Creativity itself takes practice, it's a skill that needs to be developed.

    Hey Steven. What's the difference between a pizza and a magician?
    A pizza can feed a family of four!
    but seriously, all jokes aside, you are one of my biggest inspirations for becomeing a magician, and I hope you keep on making these quality videos for years to come. Cheers!

    +StevenBridges, excellent little video. :-) Are you familiar with Claudia Altucher's book _"Become an Idea Machine"_ ? In it, she has 356 days of "think of ten things" prompts, like "List 10 TEDx talks you could give" or "List 10 ways you could improve your life this month."
    In the introduction she has a killer suggestion to folks who say, "I can't think of ten ideas." Her response? "Then come up with 20 ideas!" I love that concept, because it cuts to the heart of why most people say they're not creative. The ideas are there but they get killed off as soon as they're formed, because "they're not good enough."
    So the concept of coming up with 20 ideas when you can't think of ten is kind of like your paperclip magic process, and like the dirty tapwater example. :-) Keep up the good work, mate!

    • @stevenbridges
      @stevenbridges  6 років тому +1

      No but I like that idea! Seems like great practice. I love the whole 'come up with 20 ideas!' thing. Great thinking.

    Damn, words of wisdom from Ed Sheeran!
    I completely agree with what you say and I know in the world of creative writing, budding authors like myself are often told to keep on writing knowing that your initial stuff will be rubbish, because the creative process will improve over time, as you say, and better ideas will come.
    I think creativity, motivation and inspiration are all three separate things and there’s a process of sorts to it. You seek the desire to want to create (and this can come from inspiration) and then, prolonged effort must come before creativity happens.
    Interesting video, Steven! I think it’s even given me some inspiration to get some work done now. HUZZAH!
    I have a talk to write!
    (P.S. Love the chatty style of this video too!)

    Totally true. I don’t feel like I’m creative and went I start a project it is so hard to come up with good ideas but the more I dig in and work on it and familiarize myself with it the more ideas start to happen. In a bit of a drought now so this was some good motivation to just start.

    I think it's true, like if I have nothing to do and no ideas, I can just go down to my workshop and I'll do something, carve some wood, hammer on some pieces of metal, solder some wires together and see if I can get electrons to do stuff, or at the very least I'll get out the water stones and sharpen some tools so they're ready to use when that feeling hits.

    • @stevenbridges
      @stevenbridges  6 років тому

  • @DuncanEllis

    good style of video. Very relatable. "These are my paperclips."
    Also enjoyed the subject matter. As a creative person (who also struggles with not feeling creative) it can be hard to start and to make things that do not suck. But you just have to keep at it, adding more and more layers onto a piece until it has the depth you are looking for. It's a bit like varnishing something - the first layer looks bad, but the second and the third improve the finish and the depth of shine.
    Anyway. Can you do any autumnal magic with leaves?

    Interesting thoughts about creativity. While that word is on my CV, I sometimes doubt it should be there, in favour of words such as logic, rationality, multitasking, being organised etc.
    I'm getting to the point where creativity just comes from playing around with things and see what comes out of it. On and off UA-cam [and its algorithm], things tend to be about quantity and stuff, meaning it'd be best to make a video every day. Whereas I'd prefer to take my time somewhat and 'create' something I like without being too perfectionist.
    Just a ramble, enjoyed this magical video Steven.

    So if I understood you correctly, you created the paper clip magic!? You didn’t research how to do it? If so, that’s super amazing! Even if you didn’t create them those magicianations were greatly executed. ~ Fall is a lot subtler here in Southern California. The next three days will be around 100f., 38c., and bright blue skies. I like this walking style. What happened to the Casual Steven channel? I love your accent, I think that it is interesting that people define being creative in different ways but I think that what you do not who you are is what makes someone creative. With the creating until the water's clear analogy, I think it is quite true but quite difficult to be motivated unless you have something to work towards. Also, if you are creating and you keep working on things, if I create something that isn't great, I'm never sure whether to use it or just get rid of it and whether I want to go for quantity or quality because for example with my UA-cam channel, I don't want to bore people with rubbish content but also, if I have a break, I lose my subscribers and my audience. Do you prefer quality or quantity? I agree with your opinion and it was very well described and very flowy. Thank you, I really enjoy all your videos.

    • @stevenbridges
      @stevenbridges  6 років тому

      I really want to upload on Casual Steven. The thing is I knew that if I split my focus on two channels (at the time) I wouldn't get much done on either. So I wanted to try phasing Casual Steven type content onto my main channel and see how people found it. I may start that channel up again if that's not a success on the main.
      The quantity/quality debate is a difficult one! I can't really give an answer because it's different for everyone. However, I do find that HAVING to upload means I make a lot more GOOD content, but maybe less GREAT content. Having to upload videos motivates me to work on new magic but then sometimes that time pressure means it's not as polished as it could be. It's a balance. Upload videos you feel are good, doesn't always matter if they're perfect. Good is still good. :)

  • @gsoffice6402
    @gsoffice6402 6 років тому

    Don't know why but I was finding it easier to follow your thought process while 'we' were walking verses you sitting in front of camera. But if you were chilling and chatting with a small group on a subject (magic/creativity/busking) that would be good. Maybe it seems where YOU are most comfortable chatting would be best. I'll have to google this 'cause I'm sure someone has been paid to study that process. ;-)

    • @stevenbridges
      @stevenbridges  6 років тому +1

      Ooooh let me know what you find! Yeah there's something about walking and talking that just forces me to be more casual. Where as when I'm talking directly TO the camera I feel like I need to be more selective about what I say

    • @gsoffice6402
      @gsoffice6402 6 років тому

      I asked around office and early this year one had already checked out a couple of things on these subjects for our office projects (speaking before a camera) and walking's effect on creativity. LOL, their post-it read "OMG SODIT" which is our internal slang for OMG So-Over-Data Tears.
      Tons of [UA-cam] videos on the speaking before a camera. Sam Hook (Graduate of Psychology from Warwick Uni) had some nice tips (www.replayscience.com/blog/7-tips-for-speaking-well-on-camera) as well as other topics.
      We use to worry when our supervisor here would say "Come on, let's walk.", but turns out not to let someone go but to discuss projects, realizing that walking stimulates creativity and clarity in thinking. Maria in our office mentioned this article (www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-athletes-way/201404/why-does-walking-stimulate-creative-thinking) on a Stanford University study.
      Knowing that walking may not be conducive to all situations, it's still nice to see in your videos be it with a guest or just with your camera person. Then there's the interview you did with Keith Barry last year - we though it was excellent - then yesterday we discussed (argued!) would it have been different if y'all had been out for a stroll discussing the topics ... would the 'flow' of walking change a speakers' points of interest?
      Geez I hope my boss misses this comment least I get assigned to another project study!

    I like this video format style, and good topic! I agree that creativity is a skill one can build up through practice. Some people naturally think of original ideas without effort, but far more people do have to work at it, and that's normal.
    I had a creative magic-type idea the other day (solution to a trick I saw), but I doubt it's an original idea. I'm sure some magician has already thought of my solution long ago and invented the prop to make it work. I think that this sort of doubt about being original is what stops a lot of people from pursuing good ideas they have. They figure it's already been done before, so why bother? Creativity comes more from being willing to reinvent the wheel in the pursuit of creating something new and different, and sometimes the things that seem "obvious" to us are actually new ideas that should have been obvious, but no one ever bothered to do it. Does that make sense?
    Another way to say it is I think being willing to walk a well-trod path will eventually get you to the end of the road where you can step out onto new ground and make your own way. Loved the video, Steven! :)

      Totally makes sense. But I also think if you create something that has already been done but you don't realise that, it's still cool you've ALSO had that creative idea.
