Awesome video! I'll never forget my summer trip to NYC in 1991. It was even before the Giuliani era! He didn't take office until 1994. NY was so different them. Very grimy and dirty, but I still loved it. I had so many chances to visit the twin towers but never did so. What an idiot I was.
I went to New York City back in the late eighties, and got to go to the top of the Empire State Building and the South Tower of the World Trade Center. It's turned into a gentrified pile of shit. They've destroyed so much of the city's history. The Freedom Tower? 432 Park Avenue? Are you fucking kidding me.

I rode the R62 cars on the (4) during those years, they were NEW to the (4) and officially made the (4) line a 100% graffiti free line.
If you're in the NYC area or plan to visit, just contact the subway division of the MTA and ask a rep when will the next run of the "Train of Many Colors" occur. It runs several times a year. I'm hoping to be able to ride it in the future.
Since I visited Moscow subway in 1971 can tell you it was spectacular. Moscow subway has new stations and they are spectacular and can be explored on internet.
I was 20 years old and living on Long Island. We used to go into the city a lot, then I moved there in my late 20s. Although I wish I knew it was going to change so much.
Worked for NYC transit for only a few weeks in about 1985. Was station agent on F line underground in Brooklyn. Hours were from about 10:30 pm to about 6:30 am. At same time had a part time position in Manhattan with parking violations which started in am. Couldn't work that second shift without rest. A few months afterwards took a full time position with DMV and retired in May 2020. Always thought about being train operator.

Definitely when I started commuting to school, the subways were still full of it, the cleanup must have been underway by '91, but I'm not sure if it was all gone yet then.
they started cleaning up the city by 1984. they removed all the rubble from the bronx and demolished damaged buildings. they left vacant lots filled with grass and they painted the ugly walls of those tenements standing around alone. arson stopped cause they changed some laws i think. and they locked away the subway cars at night so they could clean the trains and keep them clean because no one was covering them in graffiti at night. but the crime became worse and the city clean up only started with giuliani in like 1994/95.
