Brooklyn IRT Subway-Elevated Sept 2001

- As part of my celebration of 10 years of releasing railfan videos on this channel, here is the first installment.
In this video we see the Brooklyn IRT as it was in 2001. There are redbirds, 9 car R-62a* and towards the end we see some BMT action at Atlantic Ave plus the corridors of the Atlantic Center station complex in early to middle stages of renovation.
Opening music is Grand sabbat luciférien (Régime des arches) - Igor Wakhévitch
Opening voice over by Charlie Pellet, who I met after he entered my car and announced himself on the first NB Second Ave Q train out of Coney Island at 42nd Street.
* The Feb 2003 ERA Bulletin erausa.org states that the #3 went to 10 cars in Sept 2001.
In the June Bulletin it is explained: In the early phase of the R-142/142A acquisition,
3
was to have been the third and final assignment for the
Bombardier-built portion. By mid-2002, however, these
plans were changed and
3
will receive what has his-
torically been the system’s most reliable equipment, the
315 Kawasaki-built R-62s. This is significant in that the
R-62s have been used on
4
for their entire service
lives. As they were revenue tested back in 1983-84 they
did see use on
2
and
7
as well as
4
, but other than
that have been the hallmark of
4
, and teamed with the
Redbirds to form the backbone of Lexington Avenue
operations for nearly two decades.
This shift has been made possible by the extension of
3
trains from 9 to 10 cars, which had been planned as
part of the changeover process but was unfortunately
accelerated by the World Trade Center attack of Sep-
tember 11, 2001. With access to South Ferry cut off,
NYCT was forced to extend
1
to Brooklyn for one year
and operate
2
as a local. This left a truncated
3
ser-
vice as the sole express train on the Seventh Avenue
side, and created a slight surplus of equipment with
which to extend
3
trains to 10 cars in length. The main
operational consideration of this action was an inability
to use certain storage tracks at Lenox Yard that cannot
berth full-length consists, which was mitigated by trans-
ferring this function to the underground storage facility
at 137
th
Street on the Broadway (
1
/
9
) Line.
There's something inexplicably powerful about this film.
Damn. This was 6 days BEFORE 9/11. There was still some innocence left in the world.
US innocence died on Nov 22, 1963.
@@trainluvr That's when president John F. Kennedy was killed in Texas.
@@trainluvr nope 9/11 actually was we through nothing bad could happen to inncost epople anywhere until the towers were attacked presidents are diffarent
@@NickyD thought* innocent people* different*
The system was in better shape then than it is now. Throughout the 90's the system was making good progress. Ironically, 9/11 was a large part of the reason improving the transit system became a low priority issue resulting in what's happening now.
How?
@@anindrapratama You know the answer to that.
@Avatar Lloyd That is very true. I think I remember that the (1) and (9) train was also affected by the collapse the twin towers.
Hotters 7060 Yes, which is the why the 1 went to New Lots Av for a year and the 3 terminated at 14th St
@@anindrapratamamore emphasis on safety so cuts had to be made
This is a pure gemstone! As an avid Brooklyn IRT rider, the changes the system have gone through are clear as day. This is amazing.
Agreed
6:58/ #trainluvr - Thanks for reminding me about the Subway Series Special decals that use to cover the MTA logos on the 4 and 7 Trains! You can even spot them on the Redbirds whizzing by Peter Parker in the 2002 SPIDERMAN film... 🇵🇷🇺🇸😎
I'm 5 years late, but what remarkable footage 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
See the description for detailed explanation of the changeover from 9 car trains in the video to 10 car trains just weeks after the video was shot.
I was 13 when you made this video. I never forget the Redbirds rip and the 3 train had nine cars back then
Fantastic, just an awesome video! It's so nice seeing the Redbirds on the IRT, R40 Slants on the , and the R68s on the (Q). And this was just six days away from 9/11... wow. Videos like these are one of the reasons to why I subscribed in the first place. These vintage old videos are just great!
Thanks and welcome to my channel.
trainluvr No problem! But I've actually been on your channel for a while now. Lol
Which of my videos is your favorite?
trainluvr Well for starters, this newest one ("Brooklyn IRT Subway-Elevated Sept 2001) as well as the "NYC Transit Museum Parade of Trains 2016", then "Roosevelt Jackson and Victor Moore Arcade in 2000", "Slow Movements at Corona Yard on 5-19-16", "1994-95 New Year Subway Rides and wandering", "Winter is Coming - W.P. Road Redbirds", one of my favorites "LIRR at Forest Park and Richmond Hill 1997", "Canal and Times Sq Stations 1994", and many others...
dude, I remember living in Brooklyn back in late 60's POP would take me and sis to coney island we go to this station.
"Look ma, no one on the platform is looking at their phones!"- oh it was 2001- simpler times.
nice job I was born on February 2001! this is my favorite video man I wish I was older to see and ride all the Redbirds and R40'S R44 and ECT... ahh good times man good times
tubblescousine2 Cool, I was born November 2000
Michael Morales I was born in January 2001.
Karen Evans nice LoL I was almost born in 2001 but in February tho
tubblescousine2 Did the 2 and 5 run some r62s/r62as back then?
I believe so yes they did but I think it was so.super Rare/breif tho
I used t oride the #3 from New Lots Ave to Manhattan in the early 1970s .and YEP I am still alive. If you had taped it back in 1972 all you would have seen out the window were burned out buildings till you got about 10 stops up the line.
Love looking at historic NYC, especially the subway. Thank you for posting this, and the other videos on your channel.
Glorious days
We didn't have to wear masks fumble with phones dozens of times a day - but I did not feel the times were glorious.
great video this bring back memories wow a 9 car 3 train man times changed
In addition to this being great footage, I can’t help but notice the date. It’s odd, and kind of eerie, seeing people just going about their lives, completely unaware of the horrors that were about to take place. But New Yorkers are resilient and they keep the city moving no matter what, still to this day. Thanks for sharing.
I've been looking at your videos like crack lately but I was taking the train home from school today when I found myself wondering what it was like on the (3) 20 or so years ago. I've seen the Bronx (5) and the Queens (7) on your channel but I didn't think you would've taped the New Lots Avenue line given the location is relatively uninteresting... and I was wrong! You're amazing!!!
Thank you boi
*sigh* That (Q) Diamond. Memories... Pure Park Slope memories...
I like the R62A 3 Train with the blue & yellow stripes.
Wow I'm crying. I didn't know there was a video of the New lots ave line where I live 15 years in brownville and the stations are different that time
would have loved some 2001 Brighton beach videos
(3) train! Yes! My favorite train to my home stop (Pennsylvania Avenue). And what a cool video
atlantic avenue sure has improved
Look at em REDBIRDS 😍😍
We love u dawg
This takes me back to high school days
Although I've never lived in Brooklyn but as a former Bronx resident who was born in 84, I mised the Godly Redbird trains on the 4 and the RTS buses. I love this video. Ironically 9/11 happened a week after
Great video, just subscribed.
Sept. 19, 2001 was the exact day #3 Trains were lengthened from 9 cars to 10 cars (2 weeks after this video was shot).
Do you know what else happened the week prior
@@tristanexists1806 everyone knows what happened the week prior. what an random reply
@@robroy6374he also knows that everyone knows, he’s just trying to be edgy by bringing up a horrible event
Am I the only one surprised that you got Charlie Pellett to congratulate you on your 10 year anniversary?
He was at some big event like the 115th subway day and was taking requests.
That's actually pretty cool
This was before Twin Towers came down
respect
Amazing a few weeks before the United states terror attacks. But prior their was al ot of goodies of the old relics of subway cars running. at that time. Excellent footage.👍✅
I Remeber When The 1 Was Extended To New Lots After 9/11..It Was Crazy To See That
It was neat to see the ex Westchester cars on the 3 in this video before they ended up on the 1 line not too long after this.
4:09 roll sign 2001 was when they normally ran R62A 3 trains until they were moved to the 7.
16:30 W! Train bullet on the sign,but it’s old w train 2001-2010.
Did I just hear Charlie Pellett in that video?

Looks like Wacky Sacky at 17:38. He used to work with my uncle. Still speak to Ronald. Good guy.
Those really old R33s comparing to the R62s... Man.
Pennsylvania. My old hood. 🔥 Video
It’s insane to think these people had witnessed/experienced 9/11 only 6 days later..
This was recorded 6 days before 911...
Wow i rember when atlantic avenue was getting rehabilitated
i also remembered when the the w train used to go to coney island for the replacement of the d train and the f train terminates at avenue x and the q train terminates at brighton beach and n train terminates at 86 st and the b and d trains terminate at 34 st harold square
Azem64 well well well look who I found! I found you
I still remember when the 4 train would do the AM rush hour run using the Redbirds.
I also remember the 1 going to New Lots Ave due to 9/11, and the 3 terminating at 14th St
Azem64 u mean, Herald Square.
It’s always good to take a look at how things used to be. Forgot that’s how bus stops used to look @ 3:00
I miss those Redbirds. Miss them even more when they were blue-and-silver birds.
Back when all our clothes were baggy
They still are
Isn’t Charlie the voice on the newer subways? “Stand clear of the closing doors please”
What's the4 train doing there? I thought the last stop is Utica Avenue! Took the train to New Lots Ave in grammar school, about 60 years ago!!!
I was still 17 and started my senior year in high school.
crazy how r68s are still on the q even after 30+ years
Franklin Ave more or less still looks the same 🤔
0:13 0:22 That's awesome w/ Charlie Pellett
As far as ridership goes, it's not hard to see why the 3 used 9-car trains (even now, it's by far the weakest link of the Brooklyn IRT). Still, I'm glad they run 10-car trains.
Also, damn, I'm old (and by that, I mean I literally can't remember the 3 running with only 9 cars just from my scant childhood memories, even though I _can_ remember it using R62As prior to getting the 4's hand-me-downs, and the overlap between both is a circle).
I love the Redbirds trains!
wow six days before the tragedy of 9/11
hey trainluvr, do u have any more fottage from the 1990s, I would like to see some films from the West End and Brighton Lines, because those were the best times because the B ran on West End while the D ran on Brighton Local, I would also like to see fottage from some of the IND/BMT and some IRT underground lines of how they looked like back before some were renovated, I would also love to see some late 1980s scenes
Josep Calderon he did have a Brighton video recorded in 1993 when R30 fan trip
2001. Wow, I was 8 years old
Darryl Reedy So do I.
The days when the 3 train ran 9 cars
The 3 had some R62As back then I see, also 9 cars
Yup, and then they got all the R62s from the 4
Oh wow I live on the Brighton line Ave forgot Atlantic Ave use to look like a prison lmao
Why was the 4 running to New Lots during a weekday daytime? Wow the upgrades at Atlantic av have really changed the station. It seemed awfully cramped and dingey for a major interchange.
That was Rush Hour Service
I don’t know why, but I miss the 3 train having the blue strip under the car number.
I always wondered why the q diamonds letter was always dim and not lit.
dubreil07 Because those slants were too old 😂
Express Q?
All that public housing starting at 4:41. What part of Brooklyn is this?
Brownsville
September 5, 2001
The (3) train was 9 cars long back then? What.
Was this taken during the 9/11 attacks or before 9/11 ?
Before 9/11
What in the early 2000s the a division had 9 car trains?
Only the 3 train did because the platform at 148th Street-Lenox Terminal was one car's length shorter than standard IRT platforms.
Brownsville^
Is it brownsville? I know they have that ridiculously high concentration of public housing aka THE PROJECTS.
@@ceeceetracey9839 Yup. That’s Tilden Houses in the background
@@darrylreedy5079 aww shit. Proud of myself 😁
damn just 6 days later...
yoooo i forgot the walk from the 4,5train Atlantic Ave to the Q train took like 2 weeks
I turned 21 on that day
Why did 3 trains operated as 9-car trains back then?
Lack of train cars plus some of the storage tracks at Lenox Yard couldn’t accommodate 10-car trains.
Apparently the 3 went to 10 cars right after 9/11
um, its in the description.
nice!
This was 6 days before September 11.
I didn't know that the 3 train had 9 cars lmao. Today we have 10
The Redbird tho
What does BAM stand for?

R62A 4 TRAIN FAN Yeah right😒
OMG A FEW DAYS BEFORE 9/11
That's the voice of Charlie Pellett. 0:20
Is that the A R62A 3 Train or R62 3 Train
The 3 was all R62As till around 03ish
r62a during this time and 9 cars although that r62 train at the 6:59 mark and even the redbird in beginning were both northbound 4 trains straight out the Livonia Yard
@@KINGTO101 Can I ask you why people fuss about preferring 62 vs 62A? They are identical in every way in the way they look and sound and perform. What am I missing????
@@trainluvr the sound is a little bit different...I love both of the 62 and 62a....I grew up when the 62s ran on the 4 in the 90s and all....and the rollsigns were different when they used to have like on the 62a's of the stop on top and right below it the borough it represent..now the 62a jus have similar r62 rollsigns all over....I never fussed bout either fleet..I appreciate both
Well sadly the R62A are moving to 7 line in late 2000s and moving to 6 line in 2018
uhh I'm not gonna talk about the wtc
RockTheDeveloper you just did though by bringing it up🙄
I'm guessing this was a week or two before 9/11.
6 days
And why is it 16:9? It should be 4:3!
