I’ve always loved Julie Andrew's portrayal of all the characters she's played. She's an excellent, inspiring actress, with unparalleled ability and sensitivity.
Don't believe the Saving Mr Banks film. As stated here, in reality she liked "Feed the Birds" and also "Stay Awake". There are tape recordings of her discussing Feed the Birds with the writers on youtube. The Saving Mr Banks film changed the supposed preference to "Let's go fly a kite" for some reason.

No, she wasn’t. She was a horrible woman. She destroyed peoples lives. She adopted only one twin because she didn’t want two babies and destroyed both of their lives. Her own granddaughter said she died, loving no one, and no one loving her. She was self-centered and arrogant, and all they cared for herself.
The stage musical was staged after she died. How could we say that she preferred it to the film version? It would have been more correct to say that she hoped it would be more true to her original stories.
If it makes you feel any better, she was a horrible woman. She adopted one twin and refused to adopt the other, destroying both of their lives. I believe she also sent her sent to boarding school because she didn’t wanna deal with him. Her granddaughter brought of her after she died that she died, loving no one, and no one loving her. She’s not the person they tried to portray her to be. She was selfish and arrogant, and quite frankly she got what she deserved when it comes to the movie. Disney was a far by the person that she was.
I haven't read the original books and didn't even know there was such story behind. So I am kind of surprised. Since I don't know about the books, I can't speak of how I like them to the film. I love the film, because I have seen it. And the songs are amazing, catchy, phenomenal, and they go straight to the heart and brings light to the dark, hard life.
As a Songwriter myself, never underestimate the power of a good and memorable song. Even Dick Van Dyke said it was the Songs and Music that made Mary Poppins Special. The Sherman Brothers.
Can't believe the writers of this piece missed her Broadway musical "Victor Victoria" it actually based on her 1982 movie with the same title. Also directed by her late husband Blake Edwards.
PL Travers really had no problem with Julie Andrews (that she considered her very pretty, doesn't mean she didn't like her), she liked music too. What she hated was cartoons. That's why she cried at the premiere, because of the cartoons (and she didn't like Dick Van Dyck either) but she never said she didn't like Julie. I think she would have been happy with Julie, the music, without Dick and without animations.
1:15 - How does anyone know that her mother went out to try to kill herself? Is it just that she'd been horribly depressed and had no other clear reason for going out in the storm? Did she tell Aunt Ellie, "I'm going out to kill myself; don't try to stop me, just take care of the children"? Did she go out with no explanation and later come back and say, "I was planning to kill myself but I realized how wrong that was" or what?
I would hazard a guess her mum probably broke down crying and told her aunt what she did because holding something like that in eats away at you so much that at some point it has to come out. Maybe PL Travers overheard that conversation or maybe her aunt told her years later or from looking back through her memories she probably realised how close to the edge her mother was it's not hard to work out. They went from a comfortable life to a life of poverty because her father was an alcoholic who couldn't hold down a job. Her mum had to raise her and her siblings on hardly any money, manage the house and keep the family together as best she could since her husband was no use and on top of that look after him whilst watching him destroy himself. Then she was widowed and left a single mother with no means to support herself. That's enough to drive anyone over the edge especially when you can't see a way out.Back in that era there was hardly any help available for anyone who was poor never mind those with mental health issues because it was very hushed up and a shameful secret. People who had mental health problems were locked up in asylum's and forgotten about they were real pariahs back then because people assumed they were crazy lunatics not people in pain. Psychology was in the very early stages of development. It's only the last say 15 years that it's become acceptable to talk about it and medication treatment wasn't available in those days that's a fairly recent thing just like different forms of therapy that didn't take off until about 30 years later after the era PL Travers grew up and even then it was still a new development. Psychology really took off later on when different experiments of different types of therapy for patients was conducted and developed from the results. Psychologists back then had difficult jobs to do indeed there was no foundation to build from they basically went in blind and used their intelligence and creativity to develop all the psychological treatments we have today
Julie Andrews has a naturally sweet face, she can't do anything about it (even Blake Edwards said she could play a murderer, but sweet). It's not that her acting wasn't strict. The character would not have been so loved, if it had been too sour. It was precisely that duality in Julie that made the character so endearing. For example, the new MP may look stricter (helped by her not sweet face), but, although successful (in terms of recovering the investment), it did not go from being just another movie and it will hardly become more than it was. .
Another book inspired Mary Poppins called The Weird Mrs. Pickett..It came out before Mary Poppins. I've read both books. The characters are almost identical. Mrs. Pickett is more dominating and magical.
You forgot to mention how Julie Andrews was snubbed in favour of Audrey Hepburn for the lead role in My Fair Lady. And you forgot to mention the movie SOB, the one in which she appeared topless.
I loved Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins. PL Travers has said Julie was too pretty for the role. I think Mary Wickes might have been more what she had in mind. But Ms Wickes was in her early 50s in 1964 so may have been too old. Perhaps she could have been used with Marni Nixon doing the singing voice.
She looked very pretty to her, but she "had a nose", didn't she? A 50 year old MP!!!, really? And with a doubled voice!!!, really? Leave me with my "too pretty" MP, talented and with an unsurpassed voice.
@joyk2327 As I understand, Mary Poppins was based on her aunt who told her stories as a child, so making her seem older might make sense if that's how old her aunt was when she started visiting her. And given how often we discuss representation in media, how often do middle-aged women get a turn in the spotlight?
Helen Christina Morehead, PL Travers great aunt, was born in 1846 and passed in 1937 at age 91. She was 60/61 in 1907 when she came to help the Goff family at Travers death. Mary Wickes would've been more age appropriate for the role but Julie Andrews was 'practically perfect in every way'!
What an amazing story and what an amazing person Aunt Ellie was
