    My name is David and I am a former Golf course Superintendent. I have a few tips to give you. You need to backlap for about 15 min or more to get the best effect. Site One Landscaping formerly Lesco sells a backlapping machine. There also are two faces to the bed knife. Back lapping levels the top face and resharpens the reel surface. You also need to run a file across the front face of the bed knife. This is hard to describe but you might find something on youtube. Backlapping is a seasonal task but facing the bedknife can be done weekly depending on your paper cut quality. You are using a high tech mower and it will need a keen eye and some high maintenance. Good luck and contact me if you have any question.

    • @bmvj0213
      @bmvj0213 6 років тому +1

      David Weger is right. Taking the burr off the face makes a difference in quality of cut. I don’t do it often enough, but can’t tell a huge difference when I do. There’s a video out there of a guy teaching how to do it with a hand file while on the mower. I’ve done it both ways... with very good leather gloves on.

    • @TLF-ABC123

      Facing the bedknife is one thing most overlooked maintenance requirements from a DIY standpoint Glad to see you here David! If your interested in spreading more knowledge www.thelawnforum.com has been an amazing resource for crazy lawn people.

      Thanks for the advise. I realized a few things after doing this. I am new and it was my first time doing this. I realized like you said that I needed to run it for several more minutes. I did run it for about 5 minutes. I also should have rinsed the reel after the coarser grit compound. I would love to have that back lapping machine. All good things come in time and with more money. I do have a bed knife buddy that is designed to file the bedknife but I was not seeing success with that OR i was doing it wrong. It did not feel right. I prefer to have my reel ground with the pro grinder that also give the relief cut. I will for sure take your suggestions and use them the next time that I try this. Thanks for your comment.

    • @JeffSmith-eq3kc
      @JeffSmith-eq3kc 2 роки тому

      Interesting. I tend to go by sound. Can hear when the grit is done cutting. Might be in that time frame but I've never timed it. My country club doesn't backlap at all. They grind very often and don't backlap whatsoever. On my own green I have found backlapping does improve the cut to a degree but I've been better off having the reel sharpened rather than lapping it.

    • @David-oe1xj
      @David-oe1xj 2 роки тому

      @@JeffSmith-eq3kc to finish the back-lapping process take a hose and rinse the lapping compound as the last step. Rinse lightly and repeat. Removal of all lapping compound with water and some agitation. The country club might have committed to a new train of thought which (sorry I forget the process name) surgically grinds the reel and bed-knife too precise tolerances. It's a British school of thought. Reach out if I can help, David

I like synthetics in spring and fall, but don’t like it for pushing growth in July/Aug when it’s hot and dry.. tried ferrous sulphate this summer to get the green without the fert. Worked pretty good.. thanks for the advice on the urea.. just don’t want to ruin years of work...

    I recently bought a 1990 Greensmaster 1000 (model# 04050). It’s a similar design to yours. The main difference [that drives my nuts] is the reel-to-bedknife adjustment uses a jam-nut / adjustment-screw design, as opposed to the click adjuster. Anyways, the reel’s pretty sharp already but I’m gonna back lap before I put her to the test. Main question: do I have to remove the belt or is it ok as long as I disengage the reel? Sorry for the long winded comment. Thanks.

    I cut at .150" on my bent grass putting green at home. I have a guy at my club that actually grinds my reel twice a year but back lapping really helps keep up a clean precise cut. I start at 80 and finish at 120 these days. At one point I went higher but I found it's the lower grit that really does the work. Don't need to get too tight but I tend to do two clicks on 80 and 1 on 129. Takes maybe 10 minutes. One word of advice to people is RINSE! When you're done rinsing, rinse again, and again, and again. You DO NOT want that compound on your reels as they're spinning forward.

    Connor question what’s your recommendation on number of blades? I bought a john Deere 220a and it looks like I have the lowest number of blades available for this machine which is 11. Plane is to mow at just above 5/8 of an inch maybe 6/8. Do you think any think higher or at that height will be to long for this reel?

      @@AndrewMiguelez they still lay indentations on the lawn especially if it's too wet on a sand below the grass. I also failed to mention that he is matting his grass down. Following the same path. I've been doing lawn care for 15 years and worked on a golf course for 2 years. Mowing bent grass which needs alot more care

      James. I figured that was going on. I just did mow in the opposite direction. I planned to mow on the diagonal next.

      @@lawnrebel that's cool, sir Connor. I always mowed my greens in an 8 figure pattern. I guarantee you'll have a healthier lawn. Another thing to note when sharpening, you wanna hear that smooth quiet sound.

      Thanks James. Like I said... I am new to lapping. Never done it before. I normally have my guy grind my reel and do a relief cut. I guess the lap is good for a mid season sharpen. Thanks for your input. Comments like this are very helpful.

    Connor! That’s the wrong way. The reel should go backwards. Not the drill.

      Backwards setting on the drill turns the reel backwards

      Oh crap. And you used the grit in the wrong order. 180 is finer than 120.

      I used the 120 first then the 180. I should have rinsed between

      You want the reel running backwards. R search it. Ask ware or greendoc.

      Drill and reel spin and were spinning in reverse.

    How would you handle high spots rather than low? I kind of have this hump that I can live with but was curious how you handle that without a complete reno. Low spots just take time to fill in.

      Tom S I have the same dilemma I was thinking maybe aerating and removing the plugs and the area will slowly go down.

      I’ve seen people use a pressure washer to break up and blow out the soil
