  • After going through the process to scalp my bermuda lawn the mower needed tighter clearance to cut paper. It was time to do a backlapping to bring back the sharpness and minimize metal to metal contact between the reel and the bedknife. This process uses tools that most would have at home or could easily acquire at harbor freight. The lapping compound can be found at Autozone or Advanced Auto or ordered online at Amazon.
    Just search "PerMatex Valve Grinding Compound" for an abundance of choices.
    Good luck! Hope this helps

    I'm really loving this mower this spring. Started reel mowing in the fall with a manual reel, and bought this over the winter. It's perfect for 1k sqft at half inch. Thanks for this video, looking forward to my first backlap.

      Hi Diving Adventures! Thanks for the kind words. Yes there are two allen bolts at each end of the bedknife fkr adjustment. Adjustment is required after backlapping. Please reach out if you have any additional questions 👍👍

    Thanks for making this video. I was wondering if you can back lap this thing. I unfortunately hit a small twig and it damaged the bed knife. Seems to be ok for now. Started with 80 grit and down to 120. Only issue I had was that the 3/8 socket was really hard on the little piece of metal that fit inside that catches the gear wheel (not sure what to call it). Maybe net time go through the other side.

      Hi John you are most welcome! Yes I have been also experiencing similar circumstances. I haven't filmed it because I scramble to get back up and running because here the grass is starting to grow fast and I'm cutting every other day.
      The motor is.pretty powerful and unfortunately as we have found if you hit debris it can mess up the reel and bedknife. Filling as well as straightening the reel with vice grips or channel locks could be needed. I always check the lawn around the fence and beds before mowing now. It's very important to keep the yard clean when reel mowing.
      I very much agree that opening up the drive side and removing the drive belt makes backlapping much easier so definitely so that next time 👍👍👍

    jealous of your sunjoe with the front roller mod. Ever have an issue where one of the blades just jams on the bedknife? It was only one of the blades. At first I saw a burr, tried filing it, but never got it working right again. Maybe it hit something and bent the blade. I was inside the return window so just returned it. Missing it a bunch already

      Hello Chris! Thanks for the interest. Yes I had the same issue and did a video on that issue. What happens is one of the blades gets bent. It is possible to straighten it out with some simple tools and patience.
      Hope this helps!

    This mower is sold out absolutely everywhere. I hope it’s just a supply issue and not the ‘big boys’ being pissed a company came out with a very good power reel mower for under $300.
    I plan on getting one of these when I can find one, haha.

    My 11/16 deep socket doesnt work. And its brand new! And you have a belt on yours, not mine. Hmm did sunjoe forget?

    • @jasonochoada3083
      @jasonochoada3083  3 місяці тому +1

      Maybe there is a small detail that I forgot to convey? There is a metal piece which slides through the shaft and that is what the socket grips. Maybe the design was changed so a different socket size is required. Regarding the belt it's actually better if the belt is removed because then your drill does not need to drive the motor which is hard on the belt / motor / and drill. If you didn't have a belt inside or it broke then the mower won't work, the motor can't turn the blades. If it worked fine then there is a chance you are trying to work on the non drive side.
      Hope this works!

  • @schaftastic7119

    • @BC-jd7gx
      @BC-jd7gx 3 роки тому

      The connection to the motor is within the hubs, doing it on the drive side doesn’t disengage it from the motor. I turned it on to confirm and it was still connected

    • @jasonochoada3083
      @jasonochoada3083  3 роки тому

      Hi Bryant, you are correct. It requires removal of the 4 screws and removal of the plastic cover. Then you can remove the drive belt to disconnect the motor. Check out my roller modification video as I remove the cover in that video 👍

      I would say be very careful with the pawl... I did this, and the pawl broke because that is all you are grabbing onto with the socket. Also, dot lose the pawl because your mower will not function without it.

    • @jasonochoada3083
      @jasonochoada3083  Рік тому

      Agreed always be careful but since the parts are light not much torque is needed. Always good to disconnect the belt 👍

    Did you adjust the bed knife before sharpening? Before sharpening does the bed knife need to touch the blade so that the compound can be more effective in sharpening?

    • @jasonochoada3083
      @jasonochoada3083  Рік тому

      Hi Alex, I backlapped quite often so I would leave the bed knife in place. Then after backlapping I would adjust the bedknife until it cut paper. The grit in the sharpening compound will fill any gaps so I don't think you want the bedknife too tight. Hope this helps!

    • @jasonochoada3083
      @jasonochoada3083  2 роки тому

      Hello! Thanks for the interest and comment. Unfortunately, to sharpen the reel needs to run in the opposite direction from regular operation. If it's run with abrasive as normal it would dull the reel instead of sharpening it.👍

      Hi Matt,. Thanks for the question. In short yes, I still like this mower a lot. I still think it's a good value as it's really the only mower of this type meaning not fully manual. I will be using it again this season again just be aware that it's fragile in regards to sticks and debris in the yard. I may purchase a backup this season in case I bend the reel. Then I don't have to be in a rush to get it back up and running.

    • @jasonochoada3083
      @jasonochoada3083  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Catching up with Chubs! Couple of thoughts. Are you able to rotate the reel by hand forward or backwards? Maybe the bedknife is too tight against the reel or maybe they reassembled the drive gearing incorrectly when they put it back together.

    • @catchingupwithchubs9561
      @catchingupwithchubs9561 3 роки тому +1

      @@jasonochoada3083 So I think the problem was the bedknife was too tight... I watched your video and I loosened it ever so slightly and it appears to be rolling better. I have another question if you don't mind. I've had my sun Joe reel mower since May and it's been great. I've been cutting it at 1 inch and it has looked good. We got a lot of rain about a month ago and II wasn't able to cut my grass for about a week. The grass got well above an inch and I decided I wanted to do a summer scalp to reset the height of cut. Well, lets say that was not my brightest idea. My grass is so thick that the sun Joe really struggled to cut the grass down to .6 (the lowest setting). It took me a couple of days, but I finally got down to the last bit of grass to scalp and catastophry.. all of a sudden, the blade stopped engaging. The motor was still running, bu the blade was cutting in and out. I took the wheel off and to my surprise, the belt was hanging on by a thread. Half of the grooves were gone. One side had groves, the other side was smooth and it had turned it into dust and was in a pile under the wheel. I'm new to reel mowing and I'm not a mechanic. I'm guessing that's why the reel kept dis-engaging? Once I'm able to replace the belt, will that fix the problem?

    • @jasonochoada3083
      @jasonochoada3083  3 роки тому

      Hello! Glad backing off the bedknife worked and the video was a bit of help. Regarding second question yes it appears that the belt has stripped. The good news is SunJoe has a great customer service group the bad news is your mower will be down for a while. A suggestion for next time and what I do is to take my regular rotary mower and Cut it in stages down to as low as it will go. Then use the SunJoe to bring it down to the final level and a nice clean cut 👍
