In this episode, I introduce my 1986 TRX 250r Show bike, I attempt to bring it back from the dead with a new top end rebuild using wiseco piston and rings, with a little luck I may be able to ride it and make plenty of smoke.

We have to get more subs this man deserves it
I like the way you think!, thank you seriously.
Honda piston rings and cage bearing is always the best choice the reason why they're the most money
That piston and cylinder looked like a textbook cold seizure
Could be David, i think the carb is way off, its jetted fat but running lean.
Great run through on bore and ring tolerance! Thank you!
Your welcome. Thanks for watching
I've never used a vernier caliper and a telescoping bore gauge to check a bore, and was going to go that route, and got a little scared that my measurments wouldn't be accurate, so instead I ended up going to Napa Auto Parts and bought a dial indiator bore gauge kit to check Top, Mid, and Bottom of the cylinder. I think you did a fine job of explaining the tolerances and where they should be, I couldn't have done it any better myself. By the looks of it, that piston rod looks like a Vesrah Rod made in Japan, thats the Name brand I put in my 87 250 BR. As far as oil/gas ratio goes, I know on my old 1955 evinrude Fastwin 15, I like 16:1 even though it smokes, I know i'm getting oil to the bearings, and was wondering if that's what caused that 250R to over heat and cause that light scuffing on the cylinder and piston, unless the jetting was to lean. I really enjoy waching your videos, I'm always learning something different, and it makes me look at things from a different perspective when working on these bikes 👍
Hi CJ, There are many ways of doing a job, this is a simple and somewhat accurate way of doing it. If the cylinder came up 67mm, 68mm or larger I would have known something was wrong. So far so good, I am still playing with the jetting on this carb. I think the idle jet is to small, for now all is good, the machine starts and runs out good once warmed up. I think there is more in it, but taking it slow. Really Just happy to have it in the collection. A lot of people over look is letting a 2 stroke warm up before you rip on it. As for oil/fuel mix, I like 40:1 using Motul 710 2 stoke oil.
Thats a nice quad. The cylinder loooks to be 87-89 .Also as mentioned check the exhaust bridge releaf before you ride it.Did you check piston to cylinder gap.
I really appreciate and enjoy the level of detail you put into videos. There's lots of info a guy might need that gets overlooked but not here.
I appreciate that! I try not to be long winded, but want to educate those that might not know without boring those that do.
Good to see the beast alive again! Never hurts to double check stuff. Good video.
Thanks Pat 👍, Threading lightly on this one. I don't want to repeat previous owners mistakes.
Nice work! Can't wait to see the first ride on your track.
Thank you sir.
To be continued what the ! That is wrong brother. Good job.
Thanks Cain
Great job buddy!! She sounds real good. It's nice to see a classic bike moving on her own power. 👍👍
It sure is, always puts a smile on my face, thanks for watching.
Good looking '87, I want my '86 back, but it's too far gone from the current owner. Thanks for saving another one.
Great video. The R is coming along nicely. If you end up having to go into that clutch, you may as well pull the clutch basket off and replace that crankshaft seal. Those are known to fail especially on machines that have been sitting for a while. You will know if it is leaking because the exhaust will smell like gear oil with a sulfur-ish smell. Also, it will foul spark plugs routinely.
Thanks for the tip. So far so good, still tuning, the clutch is acting up, that will be next. Thanks for watching.
Looking good but I recommend that you watch some of Abom79 videos where he using telescoping guages with micrometers to measure it, he is a very maticeoulous machinist and he will show you his method of doing that, good luck
Thanks Dave, never to old to learn a new shop trick. thanks for watching

Thank you sir
Can’t wait for a video rippin that R around 🤙🏻
Thanks Alex
The smile says it all, congrats.
Thank you Sir.
I love your channel, thanks dude
Thanks for watching Creek
Great video! I would truly enjoy hanging out with you in your shop. I'll buy lunch!
Sounds like a good time Jeff.
First kick ok congrats 👏
Like the color scheme. Give some serious seat time with that twist throttle, might find you like more that you thought. I have an '85 200X that I bought new in December '84, rode it a couple months, could not get used to the thumb throttle. Really tried but I grew up on dirt bikes. It works for me. Current setup is a Domino throttle housing with an ODI billet throttle tube, rides on bearings inside the handlebars, smooth as glass.
Hey dirty Bob, I also grew up on motorcycles, but I will say turning right on this quad makes me throttle up. Its not awful just different. Thanks for watching!
@@mrcbuilds Everything's cool, just what you get used to. Most important thing is just have fun and enjoy the ride! That's the motto I live by: enjoy the ride!
Wouldn't happen to have any headlights from an '85 ATC250R laying around would ya? My 200X headlight got busted up years ago and I got a Maier 250R shell but the 200X headlight is too large for it.
@@DirtyBob200X sorry, no i don't
@@mrcbuilds That's cool, thanks anyway.
Quick question, around 27 minutes into your video you talk about resetting the kicker a few teeth to get more travel out of it. I have an 86 250r (had to put a new kicksart return spring on it a year ago) and i have to kick quite a bit too get it to start....can you elaborate a bit on how you did this? Maybe a quick video or just a detailed explaination on how to do this? Id love to get rid of some excess kicker travel and have it hit quicker! Thanks and love your channel!
Hi todd all i did was reset the kicker itself. It was hitting the foot peg and did not have a lot of engauged travel. So i remover the kicker and index it a few spline teeth counter clockwise. This gave me more engauged travel and now doesnt slam the foot peg.
@@mrcbuilds ok I gotcha I really appreciate you getting back to me so quickly! I love my 250R, spent a good 15 years trying to find one that wasn't beat and abused. I'm having intermittent issues with my CDI box...might need your help finding one! Maybe we can exchange email addresses and I can send some pics of my bike and CDI box and you might be able to help me track one down
You should do a old school orange and blue color scheme on this. Just like the 1985/1986 honda CR colors..
That's a good idea Ronald, thanks
@@mrcbuilds Tammy at cosmic quads can do the seat for you. She does all my seats. She is awesome. All kinds of cool retro stuff for new quads. She made me an 88 fourtrax seat for my 450r. She is making me a blue seat with white letters in the 1986 "ATC" font for my 400ex.
Cosmic Quads has a great reputation I will consider it. thanks@@ronaldtartaglia4459
i noticed you didnt drill releif holes in the piston for the bridge port******😮😮😮😮😮 not 100 percent it needs it but im pretty sure thats standard to do for a steel sleeve bore😅
The piston already had the 2 small holes in the side of the skirt
Time stamp 11:07 you will see the holes come from wiseco predrilled. I have not modified the bridge port, but I am considering it. thanks for watching
Mrc , I can appreciate your happiness because as you know I just picked up an 86 cr250 (bucket list bike). I took a rip yesterday and today and have not gotten past half throttle yet either,, she's a scary bitch! Hey man I'm loving the channel, be safe and enjoy
Thanks john, i have ridden some but not much, the PO put in all new bushings, its tight I like it.
I can find one its just they want 8 grand for it and it has ugly plastics but its like perfect everything else but yours is sweet af nice top end
Thank you Michael, this one was not 8k, not even close. thanks for watching.
That's very awesome brother
Thanks 👍
Hey man I still want to see a ride video of the 200x that you made electric start semi auto??
That is coming up. Thats the Van Halen trike. Thanks for watching
Yes that machine, would love to see the ride, rip, romp, roll, smiles
I wish I had a trx
Its worth it finding one, i have ridden some pretty spicy 4 strokes, nothing compares to this.
Where you been buddy
Working, just working...
Very nice to have in the collection I've had the 250R 3-wheeler but I ain't found a 250R 4-wheeler around me very sweet
Same here until now. Cant wait to put it on the track!
What's going on with the quadracer?
coming up next, I found the drain plug was stripped, I had to order a metric tap, no one in my 2 red light town had one. lol
What I do see tho.. I don't think the exhaust bridge was relieved... That'll cause problems. It needs to be relieved .015
I have been reading up on that, thanks
@@mrcbuilds I do spy some lt250r cases on the bench 😎👍. By the way how's that 86 ATC 250R doing 🙂
@@mariomessinese5287 Hi Mario, good eye! yes, I'm fighting several stripped bolts on that case. should be soon. The 86 250r is a beast of a machine, it hits so hard. Once the TRX is up and ready for the track we will have a shootout between them. Thanks for watching.
@@mrcbuilds 🤘
Vertex is good stuff made in Italy
Thanks Ben. good to know
Yeah, vertex makes good kits.
is it possible someone ran it with not enough oil in the gas?
I am thinking that too
Got anything you need for one
Shoot me a pic and price on FB for a airbox lid for my 86 trx250r. Thanks
@@mrcbuilds I will when I get in this coming weekend I’m out of state working
