Today, I learnt that the voice actor of Flamme and many more classic characters has passed away. 🥲 I really liked her voice and think how much she added to those characters. Truly RIP 🙏🙏🙏
Just an incredible generational talent; Flamme was my favourite character in my favourite anime, Rose was my favourite character in The wrong way to use healing magic she was also in cowboy bebop, railgun, fate, lupin, gintama, naruto and so much more. Thanks for posting I don't think I would have known otherwise.
If it feels like there isn't a set direction yet, it's because the A Plot doesn't get introduced till episode 4. The first 4 episode were released together and meant to be watched as a mini series (tho watching separately doesn't take from it at all)

Just a note, they originally released 4 episodes as one block. They're mean to be watched all at once, it's kind of the prologue to the whole story. After those 4 episodes the direction should be pretty clear.

They should be looking at this in a more emotional aspect. The reason why Fern chose magic is because of how happy it made her and Heiter and the memories she made with that.
Agreed, I was torn when they chose such a good series that I thought wasn't conducive with their banter, I thought Shangri-La would've been a better choice, but Frieren is such a great show I can't complain
I mean don't expect this group to understand such basic things. The episode slaps you in the face with it with that quick flashback of the first spell she learned. People can't do simple 2+2 anymore when it comes to story telling, especially stories that SHOW more than they tell. If there isn't lengthy exposition saying "I chose magic because it was how Heiter and I bonded and it makes me happy" then they'll just be like "I wonder why?!"
Heiter's age? Assuming he was an adult when they left for the Demon King quest, let's say he was at least 20. Allow 10 years for the journey itself. Add another 50 years between the meteor showers. Add another 20 years since Himel died. Now add another 4 years she has been translating the book. 20 + 10 + 50 + 20 + 4 = 104 All in all, not a bad run for a corrupt priest!
Himmel was 16 at the start of their original journey, 26 when they got back and 76 when they reunited for the meteor shower and presumably when he died. I assume Heiter was either the same age as Himmel OR a 2-4 years older so when he died 24 years later he was either 100 or 104 like you said.
Watching several Frieren reactions really blew my mind, I had no idea there were so many nerdy or nerdy-adjacente people that don't know what elves are. So many people go a few episodes in wondering if Fern is an elf for example. I just assumed those things were common knowledge for people that watch anime and/or play video games, but it surprisingly isn't.
RIGHT?? I thought it's simple common sense to know who is an elf and isn't. A quick second look at their ears should be a dead giveaway. Don't get me started on the people who thought Flamme was an elf until they finally realize she isn't on Episode 10
This show gives me the same fluffy and fun emotions that I get from watching the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring when Gandalf comes to visit Hobbiton.

Its annoying since shonen runs all sorts of stories, action, sports, thriller, etc. JJK to dbz can have slow moments of reflection and character development. Frieren can have tons of battles and even has a exam arc. Overall as long as it's good that's all that matters and it's entertaining so ehh. (PS my most hated comment, HXH isn't reaaaaaalllly a shonen it's dark so it's senin...or AOT is much more complex and deep so it cant be a shonen. The show will reveal the direction it's heading in soon, around episode 4 I think. It is a slow burn, but it keeps building on itself and has a very clear direction. They are laying a lot of foundation right now like you guys said.

"So much" happening later doesn't change the fact that it takes a good amount of time before it ramps up. Also, anything being a slow burn is not a good or bad trait in, and of, itself. Frieren executes it amazingly and it works for the story it's trying to tell.

When Frieren says her and Fern are the same in that they only “somewhat” like magic but chose magic to learn anyways it’s because at the end of the day, they BOTH chose magic and study magic for other people. Fern cherished the memories of studying magic with Heiter and how whenever she accomplished a spell it would make him smile so she stuck with it. Frieren also loved making Himmel and the other happy with the spells she collected so it became her hobby. In the end they both chose magic for the sake of others not themselves and that’s why Frieren said her and Fern are alike that way.
11:57 i love coming back to episode 2 and watching frieren use the flower spell for "the first time" in the flashback and watching her companions reaction Eisen and Heiter are amazed and surprised by how beautiful it is, but Himmel... he already knows about this spell, he is not surprised but he is smiling, probably remembering the first time he saw it

the mention of oddly specific and wacky spells in this universe makes me feel like that's what it's like in LoTR and for Gandalf. When he launches fun fireworks in the Shire, its not a mix of fire and some other magic that was expertly concentrated to explode. It was just a local folk spell that he learned on his travels, like turning sweet grapes sour.
These kinds of anime hit so much different for German people by the way! Many fantasy/medieval anime just use random German words for names of towns and people and it’s hilarious! If Heiter traveled with Himmel and the others for 10 years, 50 years passed before Frieren returned, and 24 years have passed since Himmel's death, and assuming that Heiter was at least 15 years old when he began his journey to defeat the Demon King, that would make him - at minimum - 99 years old at the time of his death. Probably older.
This show is incredibly economical in it's story telling. The amount of information it gives you in a scene that's maybe ten or twenty seconds long and doesn't even have much dialogue is remarkable. Most anime will bore you with five to ten minutes of mostly nothing to try, and fail, to do the same amount of story telling.
To me, my understanding of this anime is... "What do you do after the adventure ends?" It's a beautiful concept and not always talked about in Anime or games. "You've killed the most powerful evil person in the world... What now?" And Frieren's journey throughout this is what happens. Just getting more spells. With the addition of finally understanding human perspective.
2:35 Well, lets do a little math. The journey to defeat the demon king took 10 years, then we have another 50 years before Himmel's death, followed by 20 more years before Frieren started working on the Grimoire for Heiter, and finally the 4 four years she spent here; giving us a grand total of 84 years. Heiter was likely in his early 20's at the start of his journey with Frieren and Himmel, so he's over 100 by this point; or at the very least at 100.
I'm so excited for this reaction! hope you continue this! this is one my favorite anime, it's a slow burn but believe me the writing in this show is excellent and the ost is 🔥 the first four episodes is the prologue btw.
"I wonder how old he actually is" Well he was around Himmel's age, maybe slightly older and Himmel was 16 at the start of their quest iirc so that would make him 16 + 10 (length of the quest) + 50 (Himmel's death) + 20 (when Frieren came to see Heiter) + 4 (time spent with Heiter) = 100 years old, maybe slightly more if he was older than Himmel (not by much though).
Frieren started to air with the first four episodes at once which contains just introduction of the characters, basically just the prologue. that's why it hasn't shown the direction of the story just yet since you're still watching the prologue, but at the end of episode 4 the tracks would be laid down
This is why watching episodes 1 to 4 one by one is a burnout. You will definitely feel that it has no substance as to where the plot is going, but that changes in episode 4. That's why it was recommended to watch episodes 1 to 4 in one go. Just saying.

All the characters, almost all of them ig, have names that mean something in german and they all make sense in some sense! Even the names of places in this anime! So maybe if any of you know some german, you might get deeper insides on their characters! Or maybe some comments on your videos will tell you. Have fun watching! :)

I think ep 3 will sell these guys if ep 1 doesnt get people hooked 3 often does it at least did for me when I first watched ep 1 and 2 i was like its good but im kinda bored but episode 3 came sold me and my enjoyment of this show never faltered after that.
Buckle up Chris, this show starts out extremely slow and will grow on you. It's not a let's kill the demon lord anime, they already did that. This is not about the journey, but literally about the friends we made on the way. For a more plot driven anime you should watch Solo Leveling.

As a german it always amuses me seeing these tries to translate the names directly into english ... in most cases you simply can't. Ppl should just take the names for what they are, just names.

@@johnnykotletti4614 Yes, surely the JAPANESE author chose some totally random GERMAN words to name pretty much every character and location in their manga and they only happen to be thematically fitting for ALL of them on accident. Surely "Sprechende Namen" aren't a thing. Claiming that names are just names in a story that is clearly written with a very high degree of care and craftsmanship is honestly kinda insane to me. The sheer degree of media illiteracy is really wild.
Also: listing the google search resutls for 'eternal synonyms' and then claiming deeper understanding because of "being german" is really not making your case. You really aren't the only german on the internet. Additionally nobody ever claimed this was a perfect and all encompassing try at a translation. It's merely a "nice to know/fun fact" for those who want to appreciate the show and its themes a little more.

If Heiter traveled with Himmel and the others for 10 years, 50 years passed before Frieren returned, and 24 years have passed since Himmel's death, and assuming that Heiter was at least 15 years old when he began his journey to defeat the Demon King, that would make him - at minimum - 99 years old at the time of his death. Probably older.
Guys be patient, this is the BEST ANIME OF ALL TIME!
This show is incredibly economical in it's story telling. The amount of information it gives you in a scene that's maybe ten or twenty seconds long and doesn't even have much dialogue is remarkable. Most anime will bore you with five to ten minutes of mostly nothing to try, and fail, to do the same amount of story telling.
To me, my understanding of this anime is... "What do you do after the adventure ends?"
It's a beautiful concept and not always talked about in Anime or games.
"You've killed the most powerful evil person in the world... What now?"
And Frieren's journey throughout this is what happens.

The journey to defeat the demon king took 10 years, then we have another 50 years before Himmel's death, followed by 20 more years before Frieren started working on the Grimoire for Heiter, and finally the 4 four years she spent here; giving us a grand total of 84 years.
Heiter was likely in his early 20's at the start of his journey with Frieren and Himmel, so he's over 100 by this point; or at the very least at 100.
I'm so excited for this reaction! hope you continue this! this is one my favorite anime, it's a slow burn but believe me the writing in this show is excellent and the ost is 🔥

Well he was around Himmel's age, maybe slightly older and Himmel was 16 at the start of their quest iirc so that would make him 16 + 10 (length of the quest) + 50 (Himmel's death) + 20 (when Frieren came to see Heiter) + 4 (time spent with Heiter) = 100 years old, maybe slightly more if he was older than Himmel (not by much though).

Frieren started to air with the first four episodes at once which contains just introduction of the characters, basically just the prologue. that's why it hasn't shown the direction of the story just yet since you're still watching the prologue, but at the end of episode 4 the tracks would be laid down
don't worry, the arcs are great in this and get hyper and hyper. Holy shit the last arc is AMAZING

First 4 episodes sets the goal and tone for rest of the series. It's mostly 2-4 episode arcs with side quests then next arc
This is why watching episodes 1 to 4 one by one is a burnout. You will definitely feel that it has no substance as to where the plot is going, but that changes in episode 4. That's why it was recommended to watch episodes 1 to 4 in one go. Just saying.

All the characters, almost all of them ig, have names that mean something in german and they all make sense in some sense! Even the names of places in this anime! I think ep 3 will sell these guys if ep 1 doesnt get people hooked 3 often does it at least did for me when I first watched ep 1 and 2 i was like its good but im kinda bored but episode 3 came sold me and my enjoyment of this show never faltered after that.

Buckle up Chris, this show starts out extremely slow and will grow on you. It's not a let's kill the demon lord anime, they already did that. This is not about the journey, but literally about the friends we made on the way. For a more plot driven anime you should watch Solo Leveling.
