This guy was one of the greatest role players of the 80s and 90s NBA. A quiet guy, no flash or frills, he might have made one or two All-Star appearances, can't remember. This dude just came to work and gave you a steady 15-20pts, 10 rebounds.
Otis avg 17-10-2 for 5 years straight in the playoffs combined with Houston he wasn’t some role player he was an all star. In 1990 playoffs he led the entire Houston team in points.
Thanks for shining some light on O.Thorpe. He had a perfect body for basketball. Big hands not overly muscular but well proportioned and always in shape. He and Terry Cummings were solid well built MEN.
THORPE!!!! I remember watching games as a kid asking my Dad who the guy was with the huge arms....Ever since then O.T. was an inspiration for working out.
Never got the full respect he deserved and Houston shouldn't have traded him when they did. The 2 man game with Hakeem and Otis was a thing of beauty. Nice vid 👍
Now this is the type of player that made the 90s a better era and makes all of us generation X folks talk about what we "miss" in the NBA...there were scores of players just like this... Talented super hard working no-nonsese glue guys... There is a severe lack of those in today's NBA...🤘🏽😎
OT, will always be my guy. He helped Olajuwon so much, it was good to see Hakeem finally have that help, and he filled in the blank perfectly, and I hated when they traded him, but understood after I saw it was Clyde. Thorpe will always have love in Houston. 💯. Rockets for life...m💯💯💯💯
I always remembered him for his hop step dunks. Those were the good old days when they put Rocket away games on channel 20. I slowly started tuning out after they put games behind a paywall. Houston will always have love for OT for helping to bring us our 1st major sports title.
I honestly only remember Thorpe from his time with the Rockets. He was IMPOSSIBLE TO MISS!!! Great Talent!!! Seems strange to say but he punched above his Weight Class (if that's humanly possible).
Yooo, thank you for this video! OT will always be one of my favorite Rockets of all time! Superbly solid PF and one of the many overlooked players. The Rockets wouldn't have won the ring in 94' without him! Great upload, subscribed!
Thank you for making that video on Otis Thorpe. Players like are long forgotten by most but they energized and helped grow the NBA into what it became over the 1980 - 2000.
I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American and male. I am SO glad Otis Thorpe won a ring in 1994-95. I wanted SO badly for the Sonics to trade Kendall Gill for Otis Thorpe, because that trade would have helped BOTH teams. Portland needed a talented scoring 2-guard in Kendall Gill, as they traded Clyde Drexler. Otis Thorpe would have been a GREAT backup 4 for those Sonics teams in 1995-1998. I used to be a lifeguard. When I'd teach the younger kids, and take them to the POOL basketball hoop, I'd lift them up, and let them dunk. I'd demonstrate, using a one-handed Otis Thorpe dunk! The Otis Thorpe Song: (From Heigh Ho): "That guy who plays forward for the Houston Rockets name is Thrope!" (the Heigh Ho Hum part) "Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho, Just look at Otis go! He'll work all day and hard he'll play, Heigh Ho!"
Bout time someone recognized this guy he helped the Rockets win championships. For like 2-3 years straight nobody in the NBA dunked more than this guy and he had a very good career. He averaged over 14 plus pts and 8 plus rebounds a game and decent defender and passer for his career!!! which means he was a good player that could be the goto guy when needed and he did that.
Me and my cousins once saw Otis Thorpe at a bowling alley on S. Gessner in Houston. He waved at us with one hand while palming a heavy rated bowling ball in the other. No fingers in the holes. Then OT threw it down the lane as pins crashed into the next lane. 😭 The attendant had to come out and toss the pins back in the box in his own lane. Still the craziest display of manly strength I've ever seen!
Salute OT! He's the most underrated and under appreciated player in NBA history. He balled out with the Pistons, him and Grant Hill ran an unstoppable pick & roll.
FIRST. “Ain’t nobody coming to see you OTIS” I think his career ultimately got overshadowed by his ALLTIME great teammates. He would be even greater today but even then prime Thorpe is 20 & 10
@@ivorysteelemuch better than Oakley. I grew up in NY and watched a lot of Knick games. You won't believe the amount of boneheaded plays Oakley made during that time. I wish somebody would make a " Shaqtin' A Fool" video of Oakley plays.
One of the reasons, the 3Peat Bulls had no chance against them 94 Rockets. 95?! Maybe, but that 94 roster was solid! OT, Ellie, Cassell, Herrera, a young Big Shot Horry, Jet and some dude Jordan referred to as “that African in Houston.”
Love Otis!!! A beast in the paint back then. As a fan of your work… can you please do Amari stoudemire!!!! He deserves his 🌸!!!!!! The best big man back in the 2000’s all facials no expression!!!!!!
People never really mention him when they talk about hand size. I recall Horace Grant, a then teammate of Scottie Pippin and MJ, saying that OT had some of the biggest hands in the NBA. Wonder what they measure at…
Thorpe, Terry Cummings and Buck Williams put the POWER in power forward. Solidly well built guys who went about their business quietly and were consistently giving you 15-20pts and 12 rebounds per game.
Otis Thorpe was one of my favorite players . He came along at a time when the NBA was full of talent and his greatness kind of got lost in it . I watched Otis ever since he came on the college scene with his quiet workman like demeanor and he always put of solid numbers . When he went to the NBA his game got even better and he was built like a brick wall . He could do it all rebound ob both ends of the floor, run the floor on the fast break and finish with that patented one handed dunk . He played the position they way it was supposed to be under and around the rim not how these players of today love to stand around the three point circle. Otis was one of the greats in my book . His play left a lasting impression on me .
As much as I loved Mad Max, it would've been great if Houston could've traded Mad Max and a draft pick or two for Clyde instead of OT. OT would've made Houston a more complete team. I highly doubt Chicago, even with Rodman could beat Houston with OT & Clyde
Otis was a pretty good NBA player Can u do a story on Vernon Maxwell if possible. He was a heck of a player in college & the NBA but he was a straight up hothead
We were busy looking at the All Stars and forgot to give praise to the Blue Collar workers of the team! Thorpe was built like a war tank and as smooth as silk! 17 years, solid Role player
Otis was pretty solid. He took a lot of pressure off of Hakeem and took up a good amount space on the floor defensively.
Oakley said he was slapping guys. How many times did he slap Otis? I think he knew who to mess with

EXTREMELY UNDERRATED!
One of most underrated player in the NBA.

I'm from Sacramento and I remember our announcer used to say Otis Thorpe's hands were so big that he looked like he was holding an orange.
Grant Hill and Otis Thorpe pick and rolls were deadly.
Solid for the Pistons until Doug Collins screwed it all up.
Loved watching ot he was a very handy underrated basketball 🏀 player.

"Looked like he was palming a grapefruit". Absolute magician with what he could do with the ball one-handed. Better than Dr J in that category imo
Always liked him
90’s NBA ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hakeem and Otis was a powerful combination on NBA Jams!

0:35 Horace Grant: Defense: AAA. BUT, my goodness, he got victimized by SO many three-point plays in his career!

Quite reasonable but Portland would not be insane enough to get Mad Max with Clyde gone. Think about 95 brawl with gun.
Otis Thorpe was Solid, in every since of the word! I remember he set a pick, and Reggie Miller ran into him😮! Damaged one of Reggie 's eyes.
