I grew up in a small town in Oregon in the 80's. we called this trick a "seattle flip". but then I moved to seattle and no one seemed to have any idea what I was talking about..
As someone who's been skating since the late 80's, heelflips were always around for my era. Once you learned kickflips, heelflips were next. Just because they weren't that doccumented in videos doesn't mean they weren't prevelant in the streets. Also, I had to chuckle at you never hearing of Armando Barajas and Pat Brennan, but I guess they were before your time. They were both way ahead of their time, but Armando Barajas hands down had the best part in 1281. He was also doing nollie backfoot impossibles in that one, which was so far ahead of it's time it was other wordly. He did one down some stairs in a line at that. That guy is seriously a slept on GOAT.
the last clip in the montage is so funny, bens looking glorious but then there’s just a dude that can’t pop the board into his hand as well as someone sending themselves down a set
As soon as switch fs heels were mentioned I had Pat Chanita in mind only to be confirmed in a few seconds. Neen is a honorable mention for bringing simple heelflips to a new level.
I've always been a heel flipper. Though now in my ripe age of 32 I actually land them! Thanks for the inspiration these past few years. Wishing you a thorough recovery!
Ben I really appreciate the time you put in to create these skate history videos. Your passion really shows through and it really warms me right in the stoke brother.
...but I wanna do awesome things all the time Daaaad! 🤣 Looks like heelflips started coming in right as I stopped skating in my late teens, sadly. Great video Ben, thanks for the history!
Personally I find heel flips come easier at my old age of 46. I lost my kick flips in the 90s. Great content as usual Ben.👊🏼 Ps I see Pat at my skatepark sometimes and I'm going to mention this shout out to him when I see him!
Please keep doing the history videos, I love them and Rad Rat has pretty much stopped doing them. I had Celebrity Tropical Fish on VHS when it came out and Pat Brennan was clearly ahead of many other skaters of the time, his part was rewound over and over. I wonder what happened to him, I don't remember seeing him in anything else, he kind of disappeared. Also good to see Ray Barbee was on the cutting edge, and stayed there with his later parts.
You see this is one of the things that makes this channel awesome. A huge portion of skaters probably don't care where heelflips came from, just that neen Williams does them and that their switch is likely better than their regular. Chanita was Neen Williams of the 90s. As a really good regular heelflipper, being good at them doesn't mean regular frontside ones are easier. They still suck
Pat Brennen (RIP) was awesome. People should check out his part in Celebrity Tropical Fish if they get a moment, I used to watch it daily back in the day. Have a look at the Adam McNatt and Curtis McCann sections in that video too, they're really good. Great history lesson Ben, hope you do more of these.
I've spent most of the Saturday refreshing or looking for this video. Erm, no idea who you watched but there is an effortless Fs flip in a pool that is sick. Tom Penny, Indy mids.
Oddly I had heard of Pat Brennan as his slick bottomed deck was one of my favourite boards that I had back then . I think around 1992. Heel flips were certainly a thing in the UK in the very early 90s as I did them rather than kickflips as I found them easier.
Jason lees part in video days is epic. Not to mention guy and mark! I absolutely love these trips down memory lane. Seeing some of the tech being done in the very early 90s is so rad. It blew my mind when things were going bigger and bigger that guys were doing such tech stuff way before the huge gaps/stairs/rails. Man Rick just makes me tingle. Haha. His style and skill are timeless and his enthusiasm is contagious. Definitely canadian. I heard Carroll say in an interview that he was trying noseslide maybe nollie heel out, but it kept just doing that weird heel flip out of a noseslide haha so he let it do it’s thing. I wonder if anyone else has done that? Friend of mine accidentally nollie flipped out of a Nose grind once. Board just went off the ledge and flipped haha. Got my first session in last week and snapped a nose haha. When you guys getting more boards!?
Dude, I can't do 'em but I remember my friend Bryan could do 'em back in '87, I was happy for him, but it wasn't that unusual, a lot of people could do 'em back then.
I did my first heelflip around 2002, never really mastered them though. I had nollie heels back then too, weirdly they were easier to wrap my head around.
Could you maybe think about doing a review on lower price setup like best 100 buck complete or something I am getting the boy a new board and am not sure what to get any advice is appreciated. Thanks
I see Ben you're skating the new skate classics old skools, can we expect a video coming out on those shoes whether you like them or not, and your comparison to the old skool pros?
U ever dig into “late kickflips” or “late heelflips”? (Back foot kickflips). That could get weird. There was a brief era in the early 90s when dudes like Willy Santos were getting weird with that shit. U could throw late shuv its in there too.... that might’ve been the Big Pants Small Wheels era. It got ridiculous with like half pressure flip late flips.... but Sean Sheffey late shuv it’s are worth a look.
The only FS 180 Kflip worth mentioning are from Mike Carroll, period. .. Funny, that im actually familiar with all those "unknown" 1st heel flippers (Armando Barbaras, Pat Brennen, Pat Chanita). I guess I'm that old...
Ben, watch the Natas interview he and the gonz say they got their flip tricks from watching Rodney at contest and tried it on street so Rodney had to have been the first because even Mark Gonzales says he took what Rodney did and practiced it until he could do it. It's like people thinking Jason Lee did the first 360 flip
Heelflip!🙏🏻 love them. Good history! 👌🏻 for wathever reason a lot of people got them better in switch. Mike Carrol i think got the ultimate Frontside flip from are generation! That’s my choice!
The day Ben ends up doing a Nine Club interview is the day I'll finally be happy.
We want Ben on The Bunt
@@WillCPunk ohhhhhhh my gooooood....drop that biiitch 🦻
The Bunt FTWq
Would love to hear a convo between Ben and Chris.
Ben as a guest on the 9 Club Experience would be pretty sick, with Roger subbing in for someone. Epic skate-nerdery!
My brief history of heelflips is that I landed one once.
I grew up in a small town in Oregon in the 80's. we called this trick a "seattle flip". but then I moved to seattle and no one seemed to have any idea what I was talking about..
😆
We used to called it flap 😂😂😂
I was doing heel flips in 1994 maybe even in 1992 they were easier than kick flips at the time for me anyway. And the answer is Tom Penny!
Mike Carroll in Goldfish! One of my favorite parts too!

I love the way heelflips feel when you land them.
Feels like doing an actual offensive kick, too.
Heelflip is one of those tricks that you love and hate simultaneously
That's so awesome you mentioned Pat Channita. He was one of my favorite skaters and I loved his heels
As soon as switch fs heels were mentioned I had Pat Chanita in mind only to be confirmed in a few seconds. Neen is a honorable mention for bringing simple heelflips to a new level.
7:03 this is an amazing clip, there is so much happening all at once and I love it
I've always been a heel flipper. Though now in my ripe age of 32 I actually land them! Thanks for the inspiration these past few years. Wishing you a thorough recovery!
Ben I really appreciate the time you put in to create these skate history videos. Your passion really shows through and it really warms me right in the stoke brother.
Jeremy Wray frontside flip inspiration! Especially the frontside flip down the Carlsbad gap! Front foot almost looks like he's going to heelflip!
I always used to do my heel flips super high, cause i had such a slow heel flick. Would always land primo and die...
Love heelflips and variations!! Thanks Ben!
Mike Carroll you said it in your frontside flip toutorial
That backside 180 magic flip was sick, dude. Thanks for your content.
Awesome vid! Great way to learn history of this awesome trick!!!
I landed my first heel flip a week ago and trying to get it rolling right now.
They're way harder rolling
Dude I landed my first one today and it was rolling, imo it flows wayy better moving
@@turboblitz6958 it depends on how you kick it, your foot placement as well but sometimes going fast makes it a lot easier than stationary ones
Hoe are your heel flips now?
...but I wanna do awesome things all the time Daaaad! 🤣
Looks like heelflips started coming in right as I stopped skating in my late teens, sadly.
Great video Ben, thanks for the history!
"That's life kids". Awesome video dude!
Niceee🔥 this is awesome dude🤟🏽 keep it up you’re killing it🤙🏽
I remember how exciting it was to land a new trick. Boy that was one of the best things ever 💕👍
This format makes me miss Jeff Grosso's love letters. Good stuff man, keep at it
Good one brings back memories for sure!!

I love these history videos
Great research job! Awesome
The moral to the story, Heelflips are RAD! 🤙
Please keep doing the history videos, I love them and Rad Rat has pretty much stopped doing them. I remember just a little Pat Channita, but you give me the interest to look at is video parts!!
Oh shit Muay thai !! Cayne Gayle is a figther too and Jason Ellis!
I'm guessing tom penny for the frontside flips. Would love the Venture 5.6 hollows if I win!

I like these vids
Landed my first heelflip today and I’m soo hyped
Good video picture quality
Still love that Jason Lee was in My Name is Earl
6:55 soooo clean ben!
Man, showing my age. Knew all of those old dudes from back in the day. John "The Man" Reeves.
I'm with you, man! BTW, Pat Brennan had such a sweet front foot impossible too! Dude was way ahead of his time! RIP Pat!
Lmfaoo when I first started skating John Ran the skatepark i used to go to every week
You really know everything
👍🏼 More history lessons from Ben, please.
Also heelflips > kickflips. Change my mind.
Prod switch fs heel in bloom on that gap is my fav ever
I've spent most of the Saturday refreshing or looking for this video.

Flippin heck!! 😄 🙏❤
I like to sharpie "Ben Degros Pro Model " on all my blank decks
Yoo I looked away for a sec and I thought Ben called out my name and I got scared 😂😂 “Armando”

Celebrity tropical fish was a great video. I think it came out the same year as video days so it got overlooked by a lot of people.

Heelflips saved my soul🙏🛹

I’ve heard this a lot actually
Nollie heels are def more automatic. But i cant pop them for shit. Always do the weird logroll
Finally a new video 😩

I love heelflips
John Reeves did an Indy grab one in Shackle me not

Crazy I got heelflips in 1987

Heelflips are just so much better than a kickflip
I would love any pair of those trucks! Preferably 8" size
I love these this type of video can you please do more
Probably not. Nobodies watching it and it took hours and hours😂😭
@@bendegros that sucks these videos seem so interesting and inspiring but anyways have a good rest of the day ben
Thanks :)
I'm waiting for the 97a spitfire review
In that Carroll part when you say noseslides, it looks weird front foot flipping with other foot off.
Ben I was wondering If you had any old footage of you skating back in the day? I would to see it. Thank you
I did my first Nollie heel today lol
great topic. now do caspers!
I'm 48 and remember Pat Bremen well even remember his graphic.
Mike carrol in Virtual Reality. I watch your fs flip tutorial everyday man, but I still can't seem to do them.
Can you do a rewiew on the new vans skate hi white:)
