The capacitive rubber domes are subject to failure due to the ingress of debris under normal operation, ingressed debris can short the capacitive connection causing erratic performance, after 3 years of continuous usage I cleaned mine and broke the coaxial cable connecting the board, the coaxial cable is marked up 100x relative to the domestic market, these failures have culminated in numerous complaints of quality control issues on forums dedicated to keyboards such as this. the number one reason for capacitive keyboards is N-key rollover which isn't as important these days, glad to see an offering from them that involves modern switching technology that doesn't require dismantling the keyboard

Why mechanical switches? I don't understand. the electro capacitive topre switches are one of the reason HHKB was loved, and one of the reason why I loved them.

    Dear HHKB
There have been users who repeatedly experienced situations where the keyboard would 'freeze' temporarily.
Playing around with the Studio (firmware B0.06), here are a couple things I've noticed:
There are four distinctive categories of action - trackpoint, keypress alphas, keypress mods, and gestures.
Trackpoint (including the mouse buttons) works with both keypresses and gestures. The trackpoint should basically always work.
Keypresses are 6KRO + mods, same as Pro HHKBs.
Keypress alpha and Gestures do not work simultaneously.
Different gestures do not work simultaneously.
If you're actively typing (such that there a minimal delay between each keypress), gestures will not activate.
If you're using gestures, it will lock out the alphas and other gestures, but you can still use mods.
What does this mean? It is possible that the "freezing" people are experiencing are the lockouts between gestures and alpha keypresses. This would make it more of a "design flaw", as oppose to a defect.
I have found that a couple of times, if I'm lazing about, I might be resting my hands on the edges of the HHKB, it triggers the lockout. It's rare, but it does happen for me.
Also, when I use the Studio with my wristrest, or if I'm typing seriously with my hands hovering, it has never happened. In fact, I've dailyed the Studio for over 6 weeks without issues, but I recently took away my wristrest which altered my typing style. This is when I noticed this issue. As another note, I only use my Studio wired.
I'm sure there are a lot more complex scenerios - for example, it's easy to imagine that if you're using wireless, an interruption in the signal during these lockout periods might cause the OS or firmware to behave unpredictably.
Anyways, if you're experiencing random freezing, take a moment to consider the position of your hand at that moment. You might be lightly touching / resting on the keyboard and activating a gesture and locking out the alphas. Maybe this is the issue you're experiencing, as opposed something being defective.
Not super sure what the solution would be honestly. I personally think the sensitivity and delay is a bit on the low and slow side. Touch-based input is always a bit...touchy.

Pretty dissapointed in the lack of topre.... But at least with the hotswap I can swap out to good switches if I dont like these. I like the trackpoint feature, could be really useful..
But without the topre it better be less expensive than the lowest cost of the current line

Japanese companies occasionally create groundbreaking products, but they also sometimes come up with baffling ones. This is clearly the latter. They added the black version of the ThinkPad's TrackPoint to avoid moving your hand to use the mouse, but then why would you need to move your hand away from the keys to touch the gesture area on the side of the keyboard?

Got one, it is quite nice, they really got the feel of those linear switches right for Topre users. I always loved trackpoints, so having that with mechanical mouse buttons is great too, too bad you cannot seem to use the tackpoint as a button too though, I miss the ThinkPad one still.. I disabled bottom gesture pads as they activate from the palm interaction too easily, but side ones are useful-ish. I also got the blank key caps, and those feel very nice too. I think I am going to sell my HHKB Hybrid, I barely use it after getting this bad boy.

    • @chkhd
      @chkhd 26 днів тому

Correction, the trackpoint can be set to act as a button from the HHKB Keymap Tool, so all good on that front. Two remaining issues with it: 1. How to wake it up without togglign the flimsy power switch after it turns of from idling, and 2. how to make it switch to USB automatically when it is off from idling and cable gets connected (like Pro 2 Hybrid does).

If now HHKB could make a keyboard where all the keys from the left of the Q staggered column and the right side of the P staggered column would be two staggered columns between the T and Y staggered columns, in combination with a 4-split space bar, and separate keys for the ? and /, as well as for the : and ; and also for + and =. That would be ideal.

This is such a bad product, they dont even know their target audience at all. Topre and quality was the main selling point of the HHKB. Many users, like myself would have liked to see 2u supported keys and the slider stems changed to cherry mx for keycap compatability. Its just an effort to cut costs using mechanical switches, hotswap pcbs are poor quality. Way to let a a new PM ruin a product which has be right for so many years.
